Pajamas for Vacations

Pajamas for Summer Vacations

Earlier this spring, we went to California with another couple. The first morning, I stumbled into the kitchen in a ratty T-shirt and boxers, while my friend C. was making eggs in these oversized men’s pajamas. She looked gorgeous and adorable, and I loved how her pjs were so big and comfy.

Pajamas for Summer Vacations

We’re having some houseguests and taking a couple trips this summer, and I’d love to pad around in real pajamas. (Remember how cute Mimi-Rose looked in “Girls”?) On vacation with friends, you spend so much time in PJs — especially with babies starting the morning at 5:30 a.m.; Anton, I’m looking at you — and it would be nice to feel cute and fresh instead of like you just crawled out of the dirty clothes hamper. Here are five pretty pairs: pink, hearts, striped, navy, white.

What do you wear to bed? Pajamas? A T-shirt? Nothing at all?

P.S. Initial necklaces, and the random thing to pack for vacation.

  1. I love lounging in PJs on weekends, the feeling of comfort is incomparable :)

  2. I love having nice PJs, makes going to bed seem so much more magical!!
I seriously need to invest in a pair of the JCrew ones!!

  3. Eva says...

For me, there is absolutely no point in getting dressed when going to bed, so I sleep in the nude. However, I do have a PJ consisting of shorts and a t-shirt for times that require it (like guests at the house :))

  4. CC says...

Usually just my underwear bottoms, sometimes fully naked. If I needed just one of those free tshirts I got from somewhere and silky VS pajama shorts. I hate pants though. And I never understood how people can wear pajamas with buttons. Maybe it’s because I’m a stomach sleeper.

  5. I love the Gilligan & O’Malley pjs from Target! They are so soft. My recent purchase was a geometric-print romper from Target…like you, I wanted something pretty and cute for lounging, but our apt is way too warm for full pajamas.

  6. june2 says...

Lately it’s a cotton voile sarong tied around my waist with an over-sized white cotton and eyelet top. Very comfy and I feel very stylish too : )

  7. I have cancer so I wear men’s sleeveless ribbed tees to help with night sweats. A while back, my friends asked what are some things I wanted and I said comfy pj bottoms and they did not disappoint. I have to change 1-2 times a night, but it’s all to more comfy pants!

  8. Lynn e says...

http://www.thecatspjs.com have super adoreable pajamas ~ summer and winter styles (even vintage cowboy pajamas)

  9. Cynthia says...

I wear the VS sleep tees in the summer because they are roomy and comfortable. I like their long-sleeved woven cotton sleep shirts for the fall and the flannel version for the winter. These sleep shirts look like a long pajama top. After I was married (37 years ago), I gave up pajamas.

  10. Maureen says...

Thanks, I really needed this reminder! Before kids I had Ralph Lauren pjs I loved but everything I own now is yes, my husbands undershirts with boxers, old tshirts or stuff of mine that is stretched from pregnancy and has baby spit up stains (gross!!!). I ordered 2 pairs from VS. It’s funny you sometimes stop seeing yourself after kids, but it makes a big difference in how you feel to treat yourself sometimes… :)

  11. Prudence Yeo says...

I usually go topless for bedtime but if guests are expected, a cute pair of pajamas (like the heart print one) will be ideal for me!

I’m a huge fan of PJ sets. You spend about 1/3 of your life sleeping – you gotta look cute while doing it!
I wear sets with short-sleeved collared shirts and shorts (like a few of the ones you posted) in summer and thermal ones in the winter (think henley long sleeves and long johns, but PJ style!). I have a Carole Hochman for Nordstrom set and an Old Navy set, actually, that I looove for summer. I’m 5’10 so typical PJ sets, like the one your friend wore, never work for me because the pants are never long enough and they very rarely offer “tall” options like they do for jeans. Sigh – that’s why I love the shorties and the long johns :)
As you can tell… I take my PJs seriously.

  13. DenverAimee says...

For some reason I must sleep in pants, even on the hottest days of summer and I need 100% cotton pajamas, whether they are summer light or winter flannel. This is a timely post, because my go-to pajama set from Victoria’s Secret just got a make-under and are now 60% cotton and 40% modal, but for $29, I think I will manage and then look for another store. However, they are still a good price during the semi-annual sale and super comfy. They always look great and I totally agree with the bralette or for me right now a nursing tank-top in front of company or in-laws. I love being able to drink coffee on my front porch and feel put together even though I am still in my pajamas!

  14. I so need this for my trip to Africa soon!

  15. I must admit that I’m all over the place when it comes to pjs. I have gowns for when I’m feeling extra girly and want to be free from the grips of pants, regular cotton pjs for when traveling, and just bummy old T-shirts and shorts that I’ll sleep in too. The bummy clothes are the best bc they’re so comfy and soft bc they’re old!!

  16. These looks so comfortable and classy at the same time! Will have to try a pair :)

I’m a fashion blogger in NYC. To follow my adventures featuring the best of New York’s fashion and food, check out sustenanceandstyle.com! Contact me to collaborate, I love working with new bloggers.

  17. I have two pairs of pajamas just for travels (one for winter and one for summer), as I often sleep in a big ratty t-shirt as well.
Right now I’m kind of obsessed with Claire Underwood’s white silk pajamas in Season 3 of House of Cards, but I think only the First Lady can pull those off, ha! Well, may be one day…

  18. Sarah says...

I hope even tho I’m commenting late, people read it.
I have to tell you the target pair (most of that while brand) is so soft and luxurious…it came as such a pleasabt surprise. There’s no reason not to have it (completely affordable). Almost every night I think, “I love these” as I put on my pjs.

    • Sarah –

I own Target’s Gillian O’ Malley shorts in Woodsy Green and I love them! I only meant to pop in to Target for some sunblock, but I loved the tassel detail on these shorts so I of course ended up buying them. Plus, I found a matching top all for under $25.

    • Marie says...

I’m so glad you posted this! I clicked through and loved them, ordered them, and they arrived today – they are so cute and SO comfy. The cotton is really soft, and thick enough that they aren’t at all revealing. Big fan. In case you needed a push to buy them…!

    • Thank you Joanna, it’s so sweet of you! We’ve created a coupon code for your readers, it’s CUPOFJO and it gives 15% off, works until the end of the week.

  19. I call them “company pajamas”. It is also good to keep a couple of nice pairs on hand for if you are sick or recent home from the hospital. Taking a shower and putting on fresh and pretty pajamas can go a long way toward making you feel more human and you are not so embarrassed to be seen by visitors.

  20. Lauren E. says...

This is making me giggle because one time a big group of girlfriends and I took a beach trip and one morning I walked out to the kitchen in (what I thought was) a super cute floral nightgown. A friend said, “Wow, what a cute dress!” And I said, “Actually, it’s a nightgown!” This prompted every girl in the room to burst into laughter and mock me mercilessly for the rest of the trip for wearing a nightgown like a grandma. I still haven’t lived it down.

    • My friends make fun of me for wearing nightgowns too! I love them!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      haha i love this!

    • Trish O says...

I LOVE nightgowns. I even have one that I got at the Goodwill that MAY have been on old lady house dress thing. But it is so soft and I love it.

  21. The buff is my favorite way to sleep. But it’s not great all the time–especially when company is involved. I got my first pair of fancy jams. A pair of satin shorts and a silky-feeling, jersey knit tank for the summer times.

  22. Joanna, you are always so spot on with these insights! When I take girls’ trips to the Oregon coast, we always spend half the morning sitting around sipping coffee in our PJs. I find a cute, modest pair of PJs is also critical when visiting my in-laws in England.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

totally for the in-laws! at christmas, i’m always spending all morning braless in a t-shirt and feeling super awkward.

    • Trish O says...

With the In-Laws, I also got a cute bralette (is that a thing?) to out on under jammies. I just don’t think I can do total bra-less when with the in-law folks.

  23. i find oversized clothing to sleep makes me hot and feels cumbersome, i typically wear undies and tank to bed, even in the wintertime.
however, we have nephews coming to stay with us for a week and then we’re all go together on vacation the following week with in-laws. i can’t be wearing that around.

    • june2 says...

      Maybe a light cotton robe?

  24. Love boyfriend style PJs. GAP does some pretty cute plaid ones but they are way too hot for summer. I’m looking for light cotton ones that still look cozy.

  25. Lisa says...

So funny I just bought some adorable pajama pants at target for our vacation next week! We are sharing a house with another couple and baby in Long Beach Island and wanted an upgrade from my tattered t-shirts and sweats.

  26. Allison says...

I was just in Sonoma and bought a set of PJ Salvage pjs. They are so soft. This style, but mine is a Hawaiian print:

  27. Selina says...

I love men’s style pjs, in cotton or some sort of luxurious feeling material. It’s fabulous

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      that’s so interesting!

  28. I always wear knickers and an old vest, which may have looked sweet in my early 20s. Now in my 30s and with a 10 month old it always comes with spit up stains… I bought myself a Kaftan in Africa, which I LOVE. You can just throw it over and look nice instantly. I also like this pajamas : http://www.asos.de/ASOS-Pyjama-mit-unterschiedlich-gestreiftem-T-Shirt-Shorts/17feva/?iid=5023076&cid=6578&sh=0&pge=0&pgesize=36&sort=-1&clr=White&totalstyles=255&gridsize=3&mporgp=L0FTT1MvQVNPUy1NaXhlZC1CcmV0b24tU3RyaXBlLVRlZS1TaG9ydC1QeWphbWEtU2V0L1Byb2Qv

  29. Awesome PJs!!! Time to start dressing well for bed too!! ;P

  30. I typically wear a t-shirt and undies, but I love real jammies. I used to have them but I outgrew them!

  31. I just wear athletic shorts and a baggy t-shirt. Unfortunately my shorts expose much of my leg, which leaves me susceptible to mosquitoes, which I found out the hard way last night, so I’ll be looking for new pyjama bottoms, and I guess I might as well make it a set and look for a top to go with it! -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s

  32. I love the idea of cute pajamas for travel! I, like you, usually wear ratty t-shirts. I haven’t had a matching set of pajamas since I was little!! I’ll definitely be heading to the shops tomorrow to find a pair :)

  33. Kathleen Anderson says...

    Joanna,

My husband got me the Eberjey Gisele Short PJ Set for Christmas and it is a JOY to wear. So so soft and like sleeping naked, but not! I cannot recommend them highly enough. The little tap shorts give just enough coverage, but the overall look is still sexy. My dad always helped us pick out special pajamas for our mother for Christmas and I love the tradition repeating itself with my little family. xo Kathleen

  34. It is usually pretty hot here in SoCal, so sleep bra, tank top, and boxers are my go to. Also, being petite I am in the size range of “not quite a girl, not quite a woman”. Boxers from Aerie are my favorite, they are so comfortable and come in super cute patterns!

  35. I love my thrifted oversized satin button down shirts- they’re so comfortable, a little sexy, and perfect for making pancakes on weekends. I found all kinds of nice sleepwear (and I do mean sleepwear and not items for other nocturnal activities!) at thrift stores- they’re always good quality and cute retro!

You should check out LAKE’s new pima pajamas. To die for! The blue and white striped set looks like you :)

  37. all of the above, pjs, t-shirt, nothing, depending on the season and the circumstances. for old-fashioned pjs like the ones you showed, i adore my Bed Head mens style pajamas — cotton, made in usa, super comfy and sharp looking, too. :)

  38. I’m with you on this one, mens PJs all the way! They’re always so loose and comfy.

  39. Natalie says...

Love the pajamas from Plum Pretty Sugar. Gorgeous floral prints that are surprisingly sexy too.

  40. I love this…
I wear my husbands oversized shirt and undies. I really want to get a nice cotton nighty and maybe throw a sweater over it for chilly early summer mornings. You’ve just inspired me to!

  41. Normally I prefer to go to bed in the buff, but with my son turning 8, I’m thinking maybe it’s a good idea to cover up. Also we’re temporarily staying with my inlaws SO….I’ve been wearing complete outfits around the house, bra included!

  43. Emily says...

I wear a slightly oversized, soft, white, v-neck tee and some cute drawstring leggings from J. Crew. I just want a floral kimono robe for the summer and a soft and cozy robe for winter. I’ve been wanting a pair of classic pjs as well, but haven’t been able to decide on a style. Plus, I’m not petite so I always wonder if they will really look cute on me or not. I’ve also had my eye on this white and airy maxi nightgown, but I feel like I’ll just get tangled up in it!

  44. I love the Gilligan O’Malley sleepwear. It’s supersoft and budget friendly, plus some of the tops/nightgowns have built in shelf bras. Recently I’ve been wearing a chemise of theirs, and it helps me feel pretty and put together even first thing in the morning. One day (after grad school ends!) I’d love to upgrade to Eberjey but this works for now.

  45. Bec says...

If you’re handy with a sewing machine, I can totally recommend the Caroline Pyjamas by indie sewing designer Closet Case files. These would be perfect too!!

  46. ali says...

the eberjay pj’s are my most favorite of all time. they’re my favorite gift to give now too. sure, they’re $100, but i wear them almost every night, and because i work from home and am still nursing, sometimes half the daytime too. LOVE LOVE LOVE. for the pregnant ladies, they’re comfy when hugely pregnant and then easy to nurse from when the baby comes and drapey enough to look sexy too. yay.

  47. Oh gosh, I legitimately have more pajamas than I do actual clothes. Literally as soon as I walk in the door, I change right into PJs – my entire family is like this. Wearing regular clothes around the house is actually kind of strange for us, and we would never do that unless we have company over! I wish I could say that my pajamas were as cute as the ones you’ve listed – but they typically consist of any shirt that’s more than 2 sizes too large, and a variation of these shorts from Uniqlo:

  48. Julia says...

I often wear Lululemon yoga pants and tops to bed if I’m on vacation with a bunch of people…I feel like they’re actually some of my nicest and most flattering clothes!

    • Beth says...

Target’s Gillian O’Malley are super soft. Tanks and loose drawstring bottoms. Old Navy pjs work too. I wear a loose zip hoodie outside sometimes too for driveway school bus waiting.

  49. I can only sleep in soft loose tank tops and underwear. But I wake up super early with our dog and am always throwing on the rattiest of sweatpants to take him outside. I keep thinking I need to put more effort into what all my neighbors see me in haha. Thanks for this reminder ;)

  50. Janel says...

I prefer to sleep in the nude…but when traveling to or have guests, i like the lounge wear at Anthropologie. Their chemises are so lovely.. I wear them outside to water the garden or retrieve the mail.. The pj bottoms are winderful too. These you can make a 530am run in to grab a latte or donuts while the others are still slumbering… Just saying…

  51. Gayle says...

I am a believer in cute and totally comfy pjs. Usually I bargain hunt at The Rack. And prefer a lighter weight cotton knit. I feel cute when I sleep, and wake up, and get coffee. I like to think the hubs likes it better than an old tshirt too.

  52. Taylor says...

I have a few pairs of j crew flannel pj sets, and my husband got me a really cozy navy cotton pair from restoration hardware for Christmas that are great year round. To be honest, I sleep commando, so these are more for company, lounging and I put them on when my son wakes up while we’re getting ready in the am.

  53. Jessica says...

I just bought a set of navy blue Eberjay pajamas for a trip to Europe this summer, and I am in LOVE with them! They are the softest, lightest, prettiest nightwear I have ever owned! Plus I won’t feel embarrassed if people see me in them through the windows of our rented apartment. Happy summer travels!

  54. Nancy says...

In bed, I don’t like the feeling of rolling over on the buttons of pajama top. So I usually choose a soft T-shirt type top with some sort of loose, cotton print pant. Cute, comfy, and looks good enough to hang out on the deck drinking coffee and chatting. If I buy separates that way, I can get the right size—I size up in the top to make sure it is loose and not clingy. I also like Nordstrom brand T-shirt style short gowns, but I wouldn’t wear them around other folks on vacation.

  55. Nora says...

    Dear Joanna,

thanks for your post! Just today – I bought a new PJ thinking about what to wear in the summer holiday… And then, I read your post ;)… The PJs look so comfy and soft – fortunately, my birthday approaches…

    Love from germany, Nora

  56. Natalie says...

Love/Hate how adorable Mimi Rose looked in her pj set, but I bought nice pajamas immediately following that episode. I have to admit I’ve stolen one of her other looks too– the half up/half down bun from the art gallery opening, and it garnered me a surprising amount of compliments.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      that’s awesome! she’s gorgeous!

  57. Laura C says...

I do like pajamas but I don’t wear them at home- pjs for sleeping, homewear for home-.
But I like your t-shirt and boxers too! Because, to be honest, those pjs are cute, but some of them are $100? For sleep? Better yours Joanna!
    xxx

  58. Tessa says...

I love my Gap Body pj’s. They’re super soft and wash really nice.

I’m also a fan of tighter fitting pajamas (tank-tops and tights). Mostly because I don’t like it when loose fitting tops and bottoms get scrunched up around my torso. It can feel like a straight jacket when all of that fabric gets caught up in the sheets.
Also, a cozy robe for wandering the house in the morning is a must. :)

  59. e says...

Ever since I bought men’s (actual men’s, from the men’s section) pj pants from J.Crew, I won’t go back to the women’s because a) they have POCKETS, and b) they are usually cheaper!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      great tip, thank you!

  60. Courtney says...

I have had the peach Target set for a few months now, and I was initially worried about how it would wear compared to the nicer Eberjey version. But after wearing them pretty much non-stop since the purchase, I can say that they have washed very well and really have exceeded my expectations! Go Target! Now I need another color…

  61. Leafy says...

Oh my goodness Joanna – you must check out http://www.thebrightcompany.uk! You can match your pjs with the littluns… They’re based here in the UK but I’m pretty sure they ship to the states. Their stuff is so fun!

    • Thanks so much for posting us here Leafy!
We have just seen some traffic off the back of this so had to trawl the comments to find a link! We do indeed ship to the sates xx

  62. Joanna, I love the striped ones in the second photo, but they don’t seem to match any of the linked ones. Do you know where they’re from?

I have special “in front of friends” pajamas — darker and thicker shirt, typical PJ pants. My normal attire is a little too thin and light (and ugly) for others :)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      yes! here they are: http://bit.ly/1Gq3h1M

they’re backordered for now, but you can still order them.

  63. Jaclyn says...

After 14 years of me wearing yoga pants and some old t-shirt to bed, one night out of the blue, my husband proclaimed that he “really didn’t like the outfits I wore to bed.” This is a man who never comments on what I wear, whether it’s good, bad or in between. Just simply let’s me be me. Until that one night. I asked him what I was “supposed” to wear then and he said “normal pajamas, like normal people.”

Now I ONLY wear actual pajamas to bed. I have flannel for the winter and jersey knit ones for the summer. Old Navy has some cute pajama seperates for when I don’t want to look like a little kid in a matching set.

It’s not that I feel like I need to “do as he says” but more so that I also came to realize that I looked like I had climbed out of a dirty hamper, on a nightly basis.

  64. Most nights I wear pj bottoms or shorts and a t-shirt. I do love a good set though, especially Victoria Secret ones — they’re so comfy and cute too!

    Kristi | Be Loverly

  65. that’s great! Personally I love just wearing band tops and leggings on holiday so that if anything happens in the night I can just go out in ‘normal’ clothes

  66. Sarah Beth says...

help! I need some advice on pajamas while pregnant. I’m going on vacation with my family in a few weeks, and I’ll be 7+ mo pregnant. Normally I wear cute pj sets or a nightgown to sleep in, but everything that seems ok at home right in front of my husband feels like it will be totally indecent in front of my dad and 10 year old sister. What are good, relatively modest pjs for late-in-pregnancy ladies?

    • Bethany says...

I’m 7 months pregnant and I sleep in a Gap maternity nightgown every night. So crazy comfortable- nothing tight around my belly all night! Check out their website. :)

  67. The only things I can ever wear are a super washed t (I mean washed over 500 times!) plus ultra high quality cotton draw-string athletic shorts (summer) and long wide legs ones (winter). I’ve found that Madewell has the best, most comfy, ones!! I want everything to be extremely loose and soft, yet ready to pop out of bed in the morning to make coffee and walk the dog! xo

  68. Benay says...

Cotton t shirt and panties! Although I love wearing pjs on Christmas morning and when it snows. :)

  69. Courtney says...

Thanks so much for posting this, was just looking to refresh my selection. Ordered 3 pairs of the VS style you posted, so cute. Thanks!

    • Misty says...

Not weird! Or at least you are not alone in your weirdness. I do the same. Can’t stand a shirt twisting up around my body during the night. I keep my pj’s on the nightstand for quick access if I need to leave the bedroom.

  70. Kate says...

When I started dating my boyfriend he thought it was nuts that I slept in pants and a shirt, while I thought he was a total weirdo for wearing nothing to bed (he also goes commando) but now I am a convert! It feels so luxurious to just slide right into crisp sheets (though I have kept the panties). We recently went to Italy with family and felt so chic and adult in our brand new J. Crew jammies purchased for the occasion. Funny how your partner influences little things like that.

  71. Darcy says...

Oh — this is so timely for me! I NEED to get some new jammies!! To say that I wear ratty old t shirts is an understatement!! I can’t wait to see what everyone else has to say — I need help! My biggest problem is that my husband is HOT (and I mean, literally, not in the EEW—TMI way!!) So even in the winter, jammies like in your photos, I can’t wear to actually sleep in ( I can wear around the house to stay cozy of course) – so what do others do — still sleep in ratty old tshirts, but walk around in the cute ones? This is a major dilemma in life!! LOL!

  72. Melanie says...

I live in a black cotton ‘dress’ that I bought from ASOS that wasn’t supposed to be pajamas. It’s t-shirt style and goes to just above my knees. Super comfy and I felt weird wearing it in public but it’s perfect in the house, and super guest appropriate since it’s not too short and no cleavage. I love jammies!

  73. Danielle says...

I have that peach set and they are sooooooo comfy. Target has great inexpensive ones and Anthropologie does some great sets-perfect if you like camisoles and shorts (hello summer in NY!)

I also think they’re one of the nicest gifts to receive. My mom asked for a bunch of soft comfy pjs when she was in the hospital for ovarian surgery- she wanted something to make her feel pretty when she felt truly awful. And all the new moms I know love button down sets for easy outfits when you don’t have the energy to put in effort.

  74. Those pictured gray and white striped PJs from J. Crew are literally the most comfortable pieces of clothing I have ever worn in my life. I got them as a Christmas present and I basically live in them. I can’t express how soft and lovely they are!

  75. Julie says...

I just bought these pin-tucked shorts from The Sleep Shirt for my sister and wishing I picked a pair up for myself too.

    http://www.thesleepshirt.com/collections/bottoms/products/pin-tuck-short-blue-oxford-stripe

To me they are perfect mix of soft/relaxed sleepwear but still feeling stylish with tea and toast in the morning. I’m reeeeally trying to wean myself off of a flannel dressing gown I stole from my dad. It is so soft and comforting but also has a severe schlump/netflix marathon kinda vibe.

  76. I had the same idea earlier this year! I bought that exact pair from Target that you linked to, but unfortunately the buttons don’t stay closed for me at all. It’s still comfy, but annoying. I’ll have to spring for a more expensive pair, I think.

  77. I actually own the pink pair with the black trim. It’s a great alternative to wearing ratty things. I feel more put together.

  78. Wendy says...

I love the JCrew men’s style pajamas. They soften as you wear them. And just like you said, I feel comfortable wearing them in the house when we’re hosting friends. Completely worth the splurge!

  79. I’ve always wanted some nice pajamas for this very reason. But when it comes time to change for bed I always grab my boyfriends boxer briefs and one of his t-shirts. I have a full drawer of pajamas I don’t wear. But I guess I should get some appropriate ones for company.

  80. Madie says...

So who makes the grey striped ones in the photo above? I like those best of all! Thanks!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

madie, yes, here they are: http://bit.ly/1Gq3h1M

they’re backordered, but it looks like you can still order them.

  81. Heather says...

I bet you were adorable in your tee and shorts, and your friend C was probably thinking: I should have worn boxers and a super-soft cozy t shirt!

    • Madie says...

      Exactly! Love this! :)

  82. I wear a T-shirt to bed, but I have several pairs of soft cotton PJs as well, similar to your picture. I love lounging in them for as long as I can get away with it. But they’re just too hot to wear to bed. (You can find some great deals in October at places like TJs.)
