I ADORE this! My only nephew (no nieces) is now 15 !, lives hours away, my brother is divorced from his mother & I don’t get to see him very often. I am in holiday aunt mode every time I do see him though! I also send cards, texts, & care packages. I won’t see him for Christmas this year so I’m sending a special trivia (?) gift. He’s studying French & going to France on a school trip this summer, so I sent a french flag door sign plus some Euros & he has to answer 2 questions in french before can open each box ;) He’ll get his driver’s permit soon too, so I sent a little box with a (hopefully) funny saying and some gas money. Maybe I’ll add a driving trivia question too. I tried to go traditional card & money only for his last birthday (thinking he’d feel too old for my shenanigans )& he said “Where’s my creative auntie gift ? I love those!” Oh my heart, that boy! Aunties (& uncles) are the best!
You sound like an amazing aunt!
Holiday Aunt Hill! That’s my name. This year handmade snow globes from jelly jars, ornaments, crushed rice and sparkles. And the annual flannel blanket tents we snuggle under to watch March of the Wooden Soldiers.
A friend’s daughter (3ish) was telling a group of adults what she wants for Christmas…. there were unicorns and ballet slippers and a puppy. I said I hoped she gets a puppy – all the adults laughed at me in a disapproving way, like I shouldn’t have said that. But why? who doesn’t want a puppy? I hope she gets a puppy and a mini donkey!
Holiday Aunt should always bring a Bop It.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA YES!!
do you know there is a new one with six options of things to twist/pull/bop?
As an Auntie of 11, from 18 yrs to 8 mos old, this made me smile!!
lol the unhinged toy!!! An auntie gifted one of these flying orbs that I was sure was going to slice off a finger but is actually a lot of fun with no major injuries to report

One of my kids was also gifted that by an aunt! hahaha! I similarly thought it would be a disaster, but it was quite fun.
It made our dog go *wild*, though. So best to keep for a dog-free house, maybe? Or maybe our dog is just odd? (which he is, lol)
This holiday auntie showed up at Thanksgiving with a pumpkin roll and chocolate advent calendars. “Are you too old for an Advent calendar?” “Maybe, but I’m not too old for chocolate!”
Niece’s birthday in November: My brother and sil said in front of their kids, “Hope it’s not a book or clothes—so boring.” It was something else (I gave books to resounding boos last Christmas) but the kid just rolled her eyes and tossed it aside. Needless to say, they are raising charming children.
Wow, so rude. I’m sorry.
And maybe illiterate ones…. Boo to their rudeness! We would have welcomed books 💙
Oh no…keep giving books, one day they will start reading and be thankful :)
That would be the last time I get them anything….
Happy holidays to all the fellow aunties who love “their” little ones to the moon and back ❤️
Awww, my sister in law is visiting RIGHT NOW and she brought two board/card games (which are between toys and books, philosophically), and is currently playing badminton with her nieces/my daughters. We’ve been drinking a lot of tea and coffee and having a great time.
“between toys and books, philosophically” – genius!
Holiday Aunt is Chaotic Good, that’s canon
Yes! This. This is 100% my goal
The Hoover Board XD … I get to be a holiday aunt this Christmas to my 6yo nephew, I can’t wait to feed him full of sugar and let him loose with a kazoo
I just found out (within two days of each announcement!) that my brother and my husband’s brother are having babies with their partners this summer!! First nieces or nephews (nibblings!) and I AM SO EXCITED! I love being a mom but now I finally get to be the chill cool aunt too!
Love this–so sweet!
Wait, this is me!
I also come with crafting ideas, small daily surprises, and lots of hugs!
Me me me, heavy on the books!
OMG I AM HOLIDAY AUNTIE!!! XD
I am the aunt who gave the kids a steel drum!
Holiday Aunts should also have little geegaws to hide in stockings for later discovery.
geegaw (noun): showy trifle : bauble, trinket. Adding this to my lexicon. I tip my SLP hat to you for this one.
Will be spending the holidays with my niece (9) and nephew (6)!!! We live in different countries so I’m very excited. Huge marshmallows sound like a great idea —thank you!
Holiday Aunt sent a Playdoh Pasta set WITH A MINI GRATER. Honest mistake – holiday Aunt couldn’t conceive of the possible mess shredding playdoh. Much like first time parents, first-time Aunties have a bit to learn but we love her.
I resemble this auntie!!
Holiday Aunt definitely allows full gingerbread house decorating freedom.
Holiday Aunt may bring unhinged toys, but she knows better than to bring slime.
Haha – I love gifting noise machines. Parents hate it. Kids love it. Totally unhinged.
Holiday Aunt should be advised that any noise machines that she wants the niblings to continue using need to reside permanently at Auntie’s house.
That’s because Holiday Mom has figured out how to cut wires, remove batteries and sometimes just MAGICALLY VANISH noisy things left in her own home. POUF! Mwa ha ha!
I only come with books and quiet toys 😆
Can’t wait until my teenie weenies are big enough to do some silly crafting and field tripping
Oh she’s definitely bringing an unhinged toy!
It takes a village. Love you, aunties and uncles.

When I saw this Atlantic article, I did a double take...
"My two-year-old took this photo, and I love that I look kind."
This salad appears on my dinner table nine times out of ten.
