don’t forget the one that’s hosting a bear, a hare, a mole, etc
a la Jan Brett (my 2yo’s favorite)!
I’ve had some good luck with this recently. I found a glove I dropped on a nighttime dog walk after a few days – it was on a fence around where I thought I dropped it. And about a year ago I found a mitten MONTHS after my toddler lost it! Also outside on a front yard fence :D Thank you to the kind strangers who rescued them from the sidewalk to better visibility.
My dog actually ate a lost glove last year when we were out in the park so this gives me a lot of throwback trauma! (he was fine, had to take him straight to the vet to throw it up. He’s never done it again…I think it was suede and he thought it was some sort of animal! Now I throw all the lost gloves I find in the bin which is awful but it cost me £150 which is a lot more than a lost glove…)
My favorite so far!!
With the socks. They are all having a party while their mates stay piled in a basket in the dark scary laundry room awaiting their return.
Mittens…Playing hide and seek in the vehicle seat mechanism.
Oh I love this so much! I might need a print of it to hang by our door. I imagine that they must be having a party with all the odd socks somewhere.
I lost one of a pair that was new from last winter less than two weeks ago, and I’m still holding out hope that it will show up. I know the last place saw it because it was MIA the next day. At least when I bought them last winter, I got two packs of the same thing so that I would have two or maybe three pair out of the mix, depending on if I lose another one and which one it is. But they are so expensive (the ones that keep me warm in a Québec winter), so I’m disappointed. Bat at least it is the first one I’ve lost since I can remember. (And they have wrist straps, and I still lost one!)
This reminds me of Mags Harries Glove Cycle at Porter Square on the T in Boston. https://www.magsharries.com/glove-cycle-pa Love it!
Didn’t anybody have a Gran or an Aunt who would crochet a simple chain stitch about four feet long, then attach each end to your mittens? Run it through each coat sleeve and across your shoulders, and your mittens stay tethered to the coat! My Grandma did this every year for my January birthday, when she would make the ugliest mittens you’ve ever seen (1970’s yarn–just imagine the colors). The only way I could lose them was on purpose.
Are the library books with the mittens, or is there a black hole in my house for those?
I always look for beautiful sunrises/sunsets, and i can see the sunrise from our porch. Todays extended further than usual, so I crossed the street to check it out. Upon returning, I noticed my sons glove (which must have fallen out of his pocket when returning from the park!
Use the mitten clips from years ago. If you find them, they do work. Especially for adults.
Ugh just lost my most delicious new LL bean mitten on day 1 lol. I hope she’s having a nice time wherever she is!
YESSSS! Why is it so difficult to maintain a singular pair of mittens throughout the winter season??
This inspired me to pull out our copy of Too Many Mittens by Florence and Louis Slobodkin!! It’s an oldie but goodie!
What winter/holiday books did you love as a child or love now with your people?
such a good question! our favorites are carl’s christmas (mostly just pictures, so good); the latke who couldn’t stop screaming by daniel handler/lemony snicket; santa mouse; the mitten. my husband has an old favorite called jinglebugs. we have a whole bag of holiday books we pull out ever year.
My favorite growing up was the Jolly Postman! The one where you opened envelopes and took out special letters!
i loved the postman book too! i want to order it so i can enjoy with my little boy. maybe in a few years thought so he doesn’t tear it apart and lose all the pieces haha
Jan Brett picture books :)

Oh my gosh I’m overjoyed with nostalgia about the reminder of The Jolly Postman books! Instantly adding to my list.
The Velveteen Rabbit xxoo
this might be my favorite grace farris ever.
This made me smile!
Me too!
“befriended by a Scottie dog” such a lovely thought. 🥰
This is the perfect content for a chilly day in Winnipeg. Something has shifted in me today–perhaps from starting present-wrapping last night and getting out my holiday card stash, I seem to have gotten into the Christmas spirit, despite working in the mall. Stay cozy, everyone!
Hello from a different province! We are having a chilly day in Ottawa.
