By the wonderful Grace Farris.
P.S. Signs of spring and things to look forward to.
I love Colorscience Sunforgettable face shield. It a lightweight, tinted mineral sunscreen SPF 50 that doesn’t leave a white cast but also doesn’t leave me looking too orange. I tried a few before I found it and I’m never straying now!
I’ve been using Origins’ vitazing spf 15 (I think) tinted moisturizer every morning for years. I love it so, so much. Not greasy, goes on smooth and feels so natural!
I love my Ilia serum also – and have noticed the same issue. My plan is to wear a mineral sunscreen under the Ilia … and double-up. I’ve used Mychelle and love it. But I’m considering trying a tube of Dr Dennis Gross All Physical Lightweight Wrinkle Defense in 30 spf.
For the body – I swear by Aussie Gold also. Their tinted face sunscreen is great in a pinch, but their body sunscreen is fab. Goes on easy, creamy, and it works.
People – SUNSCREEN! it’s the easiest wrinkle defense you can have. That and a moisturizing eye cream (doesn’t need to be expensive!) And don’t wait till you’re older. Just wear it! Now! I’ve been wearing 30 spf or more on my face and eye cream every night for the last 20 years (since my early 20’s) and it shows, in a good way. :)
Thank you as always for the wonderful and inspirational writing! I was wondering if you would ever consider making something like a “What we’re reading and watching” tab in the archives? I feel like I always mean to write down your book recommendations and then I forget – and at this point there’s probably a half dozen in the past few months I wish I had on a list. I can also see reasons why that might be complicated or hard to maintain, so no pressure. (Or now that I’m typing I’m realizing maybe I can just search via tags? Do you usually use “reading” or “books” or something standard?) Thank you again and have a lovely weekend!
My tinted mineral sunscreen recs!
Best Budget: Australian Gold Tinted SPF 50 ~$15
As good as the fancy ones. I keep one in my car for mid-day reapplication. Texture is light, almost whipped. Tons of rave reviews on Amazon.

Best Fancy: Elta MD UV Elements ~$35
This feels like makeup. I’ll be wearing this more once I’m going back to the office.

Save your money: CeraVe Hydrating 50SPF….it’s full-on mime paint. Still good for babies or pranks!
The new Supergoop Mineral Sheer Screen is so good!
I HAVE AN AMAZING MINERAL SUNSCREEN HACK I learned from NPR’s Life Kit. Warm it up by rubbing it between your fingers for about ten seconds before putting it on. I used to buy ridiculously expensive mineral sunscreens trying to avoid the white cast (and tinted ones that matched my skin tone were hard to find), but this works with every one I’ve tried –– even cheap ones! I currently use the Pipette mineral sunscreen, which is a fraction of the cost of ones from Supergoop or Drunk Elephant (both of which I love! But…you know…teacher’s salary.)
I am BEGGING for a mineral sunscreen post! I do like the Ilia SPF serums but, in warmer weather, have found it starts to melt down my face a bit ala Giuliani which is a pure tragedy. I’ve been using Saie’s Sunvisor moisturizer and so far like it (no noticeable white cast on fair skin and leaves me looking fresh dewy for zoom meetings instead of borderline shiny like Ilia), but would love to support a company that’s made one that works on all skin tones without white cast. I’ve heard good things about Venus William’s and might try when Saie runs out! x Also in search of the best mineral sunscreen for my whole body!
for Fair complexions I LOVE LOVE LOVE this, skinceuticals physical fusion w tint. I use it instead of foundation in the summers. the best.
Oh to be thought of when the tea pot whistles! What a card to get! I would love that one ??
Mineral sunscreens! Would love to see a post about the best ones—the ones that don’t leave you looking like a greasy ghost. Perhaps CoJ has already covered this topic?
Liz, it’s been my personal goal to find a good one for my face. The original Supergoop CC cream was my go-to for my face with a light tint but then they changed the formula. I also loved their non tinted Skin Soothing Mineral Sunscreen with olive polyphenols but I can’t find it this season. It didn’t leave a cast at all.
Now I’m using Iris&Romeo and it’s good but more like a light foundation. The supergoop mineral Bright eyed sunscreen cream is very nice for under eyes. MyChelle dermaceuticals sunshield is another light one with more of a matte finish.
I tried Kosas tinted face Oil (mineral) and it was too greasy for me.
I second Megs’ recommendation of SuperGoop. I’ve used a few of their products over the years; they’re all good!
My favorites are Pipette’s baby sunscreen (fragrance-free) and Beautycounter’s Countersun Daily Sheer Defense for Face. :)
Dr. Dennis Gross instant radiance is great!! It’s tinted so no white residue, and it makes your skin glowy. It’s pricey but lasts me several months. The MyChelle one has a great price point but it felt suffocating on my skin, if that makes sense- like I was wearing a mask or something. And others I have tried leave white residue when I sweat.
I tried Venus Williams’s mineral sunscreen and it is pricey but AMAZING. Doesn’t smell, doesn’t shine, doesn’t feel sticky or greasy or gloop up weird under makeup. Doesn’t run into my eyes. Doesn’t make me break out. Doesn’t give me rashes. Doesn’t give me that weird white cast that mineral sunscreens always do (ie no ghost face). DOES protect my fair, burn-prone nose and forehead from crisping. She should hire me to promote it, basically.

I would also love to see a post on this. Can you include affordable ones for those of us who don’t have a many hundreds of dollars skincare budget? I rarely click on CoJ skincare links because the price tags make me fall out of my chair. And, for tinted sunscreen (which is my preference for mineral sunscreen) there’s the frustrating reality of very limited skin tone options. Much to navigate, but I believe in you guys and can’t wait to see what you come up with!
I agree about needing a post on this! Including higher SPF options, tinted vs. non-tinted, and options for sensitive skin.
Ditto MEREDITH regarding various categories. As someone who is pale AND burns easily, I value SPF over white cast (although I don’t love looking even paler during the summer, lol). I have literally never been sunburned while wearing CeraVe’s 50 SPF mineral sunscreen. While I don’t love the feel of zinc on my face (regardless of brand), I love the protection it offers for my nose, shoulders, and feet. It doesn’t budge, either.
I agree it is a struggle and I’d love a post on this! I have oily olive skin and I’ve really enjoyed the Paula’s choice super light daily wrinkle defense (tinted) and the Elta MD UV Clear (tinted)
Acure has a zinc daily moisturizer with SPF 30 for about $15. For mineral body sunscreens I’ve been using Coppertone mineral or ThinkSport, both leave a bit of a white cast but not as bad as others that I’ve tried. We go through tons of sunblock in my house so I’m always looking for something affordable.
Hi all ~ I have super sensitive skin, and have finally (recently) found a mineral sunscreen that blends in really well and doesn’t seem to cause me to break out: Cocokind Daily SPF. I buy it at Whole Foods. Just in case that helps anyone! :-)
Yes! Would love a post on this topic. It could be cool to see opinions from both the CoJ team + readers, even. I’ve been on the hunt for a Purito replacement and have tried a few mentioned here. Nothing to rave about yet and am grateful for the ideas. Thanks, all!
