I feel like my husband and I are high earners- over $400k p.a. Between us – but I wouldn’t dream of spending these prices on a summer popover etc, sale notwithstanding. Who can afford these clothes?

I was truly wondering the same thing. I thought maybe Cup of Jo readers were simply very high earners who easily spent these kinds of amounts on casual, knock-around summer clothing, and maybe I was just really poor and didn’t realize it. But maybe not …?

Although I’m guessing there must be analytics that show click-throughs or buys on items in these price ranges?

Dual income tech careers in Silicon Valley will get you close to $400k. Not that dreamy though, as any house you buy (even 1600 sq ft 1970s style) will cost $2m.

I never embraced the sweats routine, have worn regular clothing all through COVID. I did that mostly to ensure I didn’t put on any weight! LOL. I’ve been interested in AGOLDE jeans for awhile, and had to chuckle when the ones you posted in the narrative were listed as low rise. A 11.5″ rise is not low rise. Cute jeans! I’m looking for a darker wash, though.
I make most of my clothing and so any tops, jackets, skirts or dresses will be coming hot off my sewing machine. Sorry Shopbop!!!

Oh CoJ <3. I absolutely adore this blog and always have, but I had to giggle at this post because this really did not live up the "finally we can move out of our sweatpants and bloom/slay"-vibe I thought we were going for. WE CAN DO BETTER! Cant we? Above are some very, very, very safe tips. We can all be a tad more ambitious. Not to be all Miranda Priestly, but.. Florals for spring? Groundbreaking.

I am craving bright colour and assymetrical pieces. I refuse to look like a "milennial that tries to look like gen-z" however I will certainly copy the weird, colored eyeliner trend that they are all doing now. Weird shapes not directly attatched to the eye line? I want to try that!!

I want to look like that friend in the group who always looks sharp because there is something funky about her look, right? I want a piece of pants that say "LaTonya Yvette would were these" and a bag similar to Haley Boyd. Yes, my references in life are only CoJ-based.

This comment feels unnecessary to me. Some of us like good basics and florals in spring! From the fashion I’ve seen on here, Joanna and the team like to stay on trend but also classic. This IS the vibe some of us want!

Am I the only one fed up with this kind of post? I get that CoJ needs revenue, and no objections to sponsored posts, but I am yet again disappointed to see a bunch of links to items with zero sustainability credentials. Isn’t there a way for you to decide on your values on which brands you will work with, and proactively go after partnerships with retailers that are doing the right thing, and respecting the environment, human rights (most garment workers are women in developing countries)? Sigh. It would set such a great example. Like, GAP were featured in your last post and are involved in child labour, underpay workers, work in war torn countries like Myanmar etc and not to mention the number of brands that are sourcing cotton from slave labour by Uyghur prisoners in China. I know not everyone can afford Babaa sweaters and price points like Gap are important to include but there are sustainable brands that do not cost the earth either. And there is a reason GAP are cheap as said. Shopbop sales are a way to promote overconsumption by a country (the US) that is responsible for most of the world’s contribution to climate change per person. You have to be asleep not to know this. There are SO many great sustainable brands that would love to be on a platform like this.

I agree; I would definitely appreciate a post featuring sustainable brands with several price point options. I make around $30, 000 / year, but I still try to make a big effort to make ethical purchases.

Yes! I am also looking forward to wearing ‘real’ clothes again my ‘uniform’ for the past year, has been my training outfit of the day.
Not that it has been ugly or anything, I just loooong for a normal outfit, just like you:-)

I buy as much second hand I can. I love poshmark and used bookshops. I’ve got a huge mend/project pile and hope to get to that project some day!

I’m planting a big garden and don’t eat meat at home.

Definitely some cute choices – the pink dress reminds me of my mother’s wedding dress in the ’70s. ? As someone who only makes a large-ish ticket style purchase maybe once or twice a year, though, I’ll always wish that my beloved COJ will feature more secondhand/vintage. Try it, you’ll like it! ?

(I’m sure mamas would agree that a lot of maternity options are generally terrible…) Or any other expecting mamas have some good options to suggest?!

Cosign this request! Maternity clothes can kind of be the worst. Kari, I’ve been mixing it up with loose-fitting non-maternity options along with some straight up maternity pants. I really like loose-fitting dresses from Old Navy and Gap – sometimes not even necessary to size up! Anthropologie and Free People generally has some more flowy options that work before, during, and after pregnancy. (I’ve got my eye on the Feeling Groovy maxi dress from FP!) For actual maternity pants, Old Navy is hit or miss but I’ve found some good ones. Same with Madewell. I’ve got one pair of full-panel maternity jeans that I like okay, but they bag out pretty quickly. Would love to hear where others have found stylish options :)

I honestly mostly wore sized up regular clothes during my pregnancy last year! Now I still get to wear them, which is great. I have a nice open cardigan I’m wearing right now, and some tunics and dresses a size up that are floaty so still fit great. Eileen Fisher, including their more affordable Renew line, is a great place to look. I then just bought a few pair of maternity pants and tights plus nursing tanks and bras.

Old navy linen blend shorts (non maternity, with a soft, wide elastic waist) are my faves, pregnant and not. Loved the Ingrid and Isabel line at Target, especially their t shirts that don’t have the elastic in the sides, form fitting dresses, and leggings. I liked experimenting with a different silhouette (more fitted) while rocking a bump! Also, keep using your usual accessories, cardigans, and blazers. Have fun!

Hi Kari! I used Rent the Runway when I was pregnant; they have maternity clothes and I could also easily size up in non-maternity clothes. I cancelled my membership a few weeks before my due date, and had zero clothes to figure out what to do with after baby was born. This was in 2019, so things are different now, but the membership allowed me to wear many different fancy/fun dresses for baby showers and vacations; I definitely was better dressed then than I am these days!

@kari, the best advice i have for fashion-interested, changing pregnant bodies is ebay/poshmark! since most people use maternity clothes for a time-limited period, they’re usually in good shape and a fraction of the price. figure out a brand you like and search away :)
