Too true. I just read The Chicken Sisters and it was all I could do for days (other than childcare, but even then I was sneaking reading time in when making snacks etc!) There’s nothing quite like a good book

I loved An American Marriage. Hoping it gets made into a movie,I was casting it the whole time I was reading it.
For the past two weeks I’ve been lugging Angela’s Ashes around in my work bag. So old, I know (it was published in 1997) but I had not read it until now. It blew me away so much that I told my 13-year-old “You have to remember to read this book when you get older”!
So on point!
Now, does anyone else has the problem that after finishing a really good book have troubles enjoying the immediate following one? I usually am really in the mood to read but I also keep thinking of the first one. What I do is try to read a not as good book after the good one, but it’s hard to know in advance and I still feel I’m not giving a fair chance to the second book. Anyone has an advice?
I’ll say plunge right into the next book without overthinking it. Of course it might not be half as good as the previous one. But then again, it might even be better. The best way to find out is by reading it.

I just finished, “Le lambeau” de Philippe Lançon, and it has impressed me. Philippe Lançon, author of three novels and one of the most respected cultural critics in France, had the lower half of his face blown away by two bullets fired from a Kalashnikov . He was shot in the newsroom of the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo in Paris. In 500 pages, this brave writer who calls things by their name has woven coincidences, terrifying experiences, consequences, reflections and lessons into a narrative that leaves the reader reeling.
I stayed up til 2:30am reading Tana French’s newest, Chimes of a Lost Cathedral. It’s the second book in her Russion Revolution trilogy and I honestly scheduled a vacation JUST so I could have time to read it. If you love historical fiction, you have to read these! The first one is called The Revolution of Marina M and you will be hooked immediately.
Wait WHAT. Is Tana French’s book out in US? I haven’t seen it!!! Help?!??

I often stay up too late reading, especially near the end of the book. I didn’t think I’d enjoy reading a book on a tablet, but I do. It also means I can check out a book anytime, anywhere.
I LOVED Good Talk, the graphic novel memoir by Mira Jacob which was recommended on here. Being in an inter-racial marriage myself this book spoke to my heart and allows me to feel like I can be real in my everyday conversations with my son about racism rather than slide it under the rug. I love how a good book makes you feel more alive than you did before you read it.
oh good to know. I’m also in an inter-racial marriage and with an 3 year old and a 9 month old, i’m already starting to think about these future conversations.

I agree. I just finished it and read it in about 2-3 days (weekdays!). I was super uncomfortable while reading it, but also could not stop.

I just finished The Overstory by Richard Powers and am totally that person who won’t stop talking about it. You guys, IT’S SO GOOD. ;)

I read last night while cooking supper and ended up over-cooking the noodles. Eh, is was worth it to get a few more pages in :) Currently reading ‘The Woman in the Window’ by AJ Finn.

I was this way about Jennifer Weiner’s “Mrs. Everything.” I actually feel as though I miss the two main characters since I finished reading! As if they became my friends. Wonderful story.

I’m in the middle of An American Marriage and it’s one of the best books i’ve read in YEARS. So compelling.
This is me right now! Reading The Goldfinch and I cherish any moment I have to keep reading it. Started reading before I saw the movie was coming out. It’s been on my list for a long time but I was intimidated by the large binding. Glad I waited though to be honest, there’s a lot of things in the book I’m not sure I would have been ready for had I been younger.

I have been looking forward to getting on the subway every day because of a book I’m reading. It is so wild and over the top (and a true story), that I’m pretty sure I have a maniacal smile when reading and scare other commuters.!

This is me with all the books lately. I’ve been reading instead of doing other important things, but after being in a terrible reading slump for a year and a half, it feels good to be plowing through books again. Considering I have 185 books on my TBR stack, it’s a really good thing the spell is broken.
I very rarely read physical books anymore since I discovered the reading apps on my phone. What a pleasure it was to be traveling in Europe with nothing extra to carry, my book already in my hand whenever I wanted it, no need to dig out my reading glasses! When I traveled in the early 90’s, OMG the endless quest for reading material in English, the extra weight in my backpack…
Last month I was waiting for my flight back to NYC at the airport in Paris, and the guy sitting next to me snarled at me, “Didja ever think about reading a novel?” Which I was in fact doing, on my Kindle app. He then proceeded to heft a ten pound James Michener novel out of his suitcase. “THIS IS A NOVEL!” he proclaimed. I think he actually felt that he was being morally superior to me by reading a physical book.
I never thought I’d enjoy reading books on a screen but it has vastly increased my book consumption. Being able to download a book whenever I’ve finished another one- and never return books late to the library! I understand the love and charm of the analog but being able to travel with one device that allows me to read all my books and draw all my pictures has made me do both so much more.
I still love reading a paper book, but after I had my son in April, I started reading books on my phone bc I was awake and reading about 20 hours a day. My husband got me a kindle paperwhite for mothers day, and I can’t believe how much I love it. I still find reading on a device to be frustrating in many ways, but it makes reading so effortless in others that it’s worth it to me. Also, I am a librarian, and hereby declare that reading is reading whether it’s audio, on paper, on a device, a graphic format, or any other way you may take in stories!
Taking train to gym with yoga class scheduled, get so invested in book on the train you cancel yoga class and instead half-ass it on the elliptical to keep reading…
If the book is great, I usuall get in bed right after my son; 8pm? I couldn’t put away “My absolute darling”, by Gabriel Tallent, one week-end. I just forgot all about my husband and child, but I’m lucky, they totally get it! It’s like diving into another world.

This was me all summer with “Fleishman is in Trouble” by Taffy Brodesser-Akner. I kept telling everyone I knew to read it so they could talk about it with me. It is definitely one of the best books I’ve read in ages, and I basically did not leave the couch for the 2ish days it took me to read it. I read it the week it came out back in June, and I still can’t stop talking about it!
Also, sitting at my desk trying to think about work but really thinking about how bad I want to read my book.
Yes, Emily! That’s the best. Plus trying to squeeze in a few pages during free moments throughout the day. There’s nothing like a good book.
