My husband has been watching TV with CC on because we always complain about the volume of the TV and he finds it very helpful when he is watching actors with heavy accents. As for me, I have been watching a lot of Korean dramas and I just got used to having the CC on.

I was once working at a music festival a few summers back when some of our high-level guests asked if we could help them get married on site that weekend. It was a super hippie fest and our team absolutely said yes. We pulled together a wedding ceremony and reception in 36 hrs – invitations printed in the admin trailer, rings and outfits purchased from an on-site vendor, one of our site ops guys happened to be an ordained minister! – and I made the bouquets from po-dunk town grocery store flowers using duct tape and a staple gun. It was some of my finest work. Never underestimate the potential of sad grocery store bouquets.

For those interested in making their own (easy!) body scrubs: mix white sugar, avocado oil, and a few drops of essential oil into a jar. Put a lid on it and it lasts forever in the shower. You can use it lightly on your lips, too!

Thank you – I now feel I’ve been given free rein to have closed captions on the TV screen! The number of times I’ve asked “what did she/he say” is embarrassing, even though it only happens with certain shows. The volume on TV shows and adverts fluctuates quite a bit too.

We also started watching TV with CC on back when our son was a baby and we were in a tiny condo. We’ve continued b/c our flat screen sound system is the worst! We should probably get a sound bar, but I’ve gotten used to it.

The closed-caption article reminded me of a class I took in college. I sat next to a hard-of-hearing person who had a stenographer with him in class. She typed the lecture word-for-word and it showed up on a little screen. I (as a non hearing impaired person) was always sneaking peeks at the screen to catch up on points I had missed. It was so helpful!! The stenographer and my fellow student definitely caught me in the act a few times but kindly said they didn’t mind.

This post is life-changing! I watch TV and movies with closed captioning and always felt a ton of embarrassment around it. I’ve had boyfriends ask me about it, and felt so weird explaining that it’s easier for me to follow along (I retain info and learn better from reading vs. listening). I even started a habit of turning them on and then turning them off so I wouldn’t have to explain it if a friend or boyfriend came over and noticed the default, lol. I thought I was all alone in this!!! Not only am I not alone (Club Captions Forever), this is making me realize I need to read Brene Brown’s The Gifts of Imperfection again. We’re so hard on ourselves sometimes, and our quirks are what make us each beloved.

Deep Eddy Pool in Austin is as unique and fabulous as Barton Springs in its own way. Also you could drive to Sweet Berry Farms in Marble Falls and pick strawberries.

My husband and I always use closed-captioning and we are not hearing impaired. He has ADD and it helps his focus and I sometimes have trouble understanding accents–it helps us pick up everything and enjoy the show more. Also, sometimes the closed-captioning is pretty funny too, especially when describing music or sounds.

Joanna! Thank you for admitting to not enjoying raunchy comedy. Most of what’s out there I find appalling (and, frankly, a little lame because it seems that being crass is substituted for authentic creativity). Given the small number of options, I often feel like I’m the only person on the planet that appreciates decorum and tastefulness in my media choices.

I grew up watching tv with closed captions because english is my parents’ second language and it helped them both understand and learn new words. I still love watch w cc and for a while it reallllly annoyed my husband, that is until we had kids. The other day he said, “we need to turn down the volume and turn on the captions.” Oh how the tables have turned.

We put the closed captions on every time we watch “Outlander.” I don’t want to miss a thing!

Also, Cave without a name & Cascade Caverns are both in my hometown! So if you end up in Boerne, TX check out Soda Pops (sweet little burger place with an ice cream shop next door) and Random (food trucks, beer and lots of room for the kids to play).

I love that hobby horse story. I think children are too often pushed to stop playing and give up toys. I like to see these girls taking it back. Childhood is too short already.
