On my last trip to NYC I saw a rat on the subway track going in and out of a Nilla wafers box. That rat was living it’s best life.
Once, during a weekend trip to NYC, my friends and I were eating empanadas in a small restaurant when Queen Latifah came in…and sat right next to me!
She seemed perfectly nice and down to earth, but I had to try real hard to play it cool
I went to New York for my 21st birthday and the first night there I saw a man getting arrested at a department store while his friend broke free from the cops and took off running.
I have to say, it was fun to watch.
During my 10 years in New York I had two AMAZING (and very New York-y) celebrity-on-the-subway sightings: Tim Gunn and Chris Noth! But the most dramatic NYC moment may have been at Congee Village in the LES – I personally witnessed a girl THROW HER DRINK in her date’s face and storm off! I was like, omg, I did NOT think that ever actually happened in real life!!!
last time i was in new york (February) I was out front of my hotel drinking a cup of coffee and Christine Baranski walked right past me. with her hair in curlers. shes gorgeous. my first new york celebrity sighting was the Olsen twins outside of Supreme in 2003 haha. never seen a celebrity on the subway though, alas. nor a pizza rat. I have to have seen someone drinking a cosmo, i lived there peak SATC!
Christine Barakski was my first NYC subway celeb sighting!! I also saw Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis a couple months ago; they were sitting in seats directly perpendicular to ours. It was thrilling!
If you haven’t had a cosmo at Noodle Pudding on Henry Street in Brooklyn, are you really even living in NYC? I would argue no…
i was expecting this to be all the touristy things a new yorker hasn’t seen (i’ve never been to the top of the empire state building!) but i really connected with the lack of celebrity sightings. 4 years of working in manhattan and the only celebrity i ever saw was Willie Garson, on the set of White Collar. Apparently I just missed seeing Matt Bomer. I never just happened upon a celeb on the street or subway, and it bums me out!!
I have many NYC tales to share but, the most memorable is of John F. Kennedy Jr almost running into me while I was about to cross the street. Light turned in favor of pedestrians and he popped up out of nowhere on his bike. I presume to the offices of ‘George’. ( It was still in operation. This happened on the corner of Broadway & 51st). He definitely yelled his apologies over his shoulder with a smile and kept cycling westward. I love this town!!
Love this! interesting comments too!
I saw Robert Sean Leonard on the subway right after seeing him in a play. I thought that was pretty neat.
I lived in New York for 18yrs and worked as a bartender, I’ve met Frank sinatra, Clint Eastwood, my favourite Christopher Walkden and so many more, I love New York.
I saw Meryl Streep on the subway, which pretty much feels like winning the Academy Award of celebrity subway spotting. :)
Absolutely!
I’ve also seen a dog on a skateboard in NYC! Actually it was two dogs, a big one, and a little one standing on top, being pulled by a string tied to the front of the board. I’m delighted all over again just remembering it.
I‘ve seen all of these things! Once I was the girl fighting with another girl at a sample sale. She won. And I was on the F train with Anne Hathaway once. Every single person just kept their cool and pretended they didn’t notice. I love New York.
I’ve totally seen a rat drag a slice of pizza, but my favorite NY moment was seeing someone bang their fists on a cab in a crosswalk and scream, “I’m walkin’ here!!” Sometimes life really is like a movie scene here.
I saw Mike Meyers on the F train once :)
that’s a really good one!!!!!
I’ve seen a squirrel dragging an entire slice of pizza with its mouth down the sidewalk. Felt like this is important enough to add to this discussion. haha
I saw a squirrel carrying a slice up a tree — every bit as hilarious as it sounds.
I just last week saw a rat scurry up to a half a bagel lying in the gutter in the Village and whisk it down a storm drain. I have sat next to celebrities on the subway, most notably Fiona Shaw, who was starring in the play my friends and I were on our way to see, and Richard Thomas, who played John Boy Walton.
When I worked at Tavern on the Green in NYC, I once saw a squirrel holding an entire biscotti in his mouth…
I have totally seen people going at it at a sample sale!
Grace has a talent for stating the obvious. And making it humorous. Just love her. Thank you, Grace.
My husband is in NYC right now for the first time, and he’s been sending me texts about all the things he’s seeing: rats in the subway, Eddie Van Halen’s guitar at MOMA, Statue of Liberty, walking the Brooklyn Bridge … he’s chaperoning 38 8th-graders and it’s been a whirlwind!
Love this! I actually have seen a rat with a slice of pizza. He dragged it up half a flight of steps actually (Metropolitan G stop), and I think he gave up and started eating mid-way up. Just imagine all those folks coming down the stairs. Oddly, rat sightings like this create a bond amongst strangers.
