Are you ever scrolling through Instagram when you come across an illustration that is so true to life that you can’t help smiling and nodding? These seven women make us feel understood every time…
Nina Cosford, above.
And Saskia Wariner for Feminist Fight Club
And, of course, our girl Mari Andrew.
Any you would add?
P.S. More great Instagram accounts.
My sister Kathleen Marcotte’s Instagram account always makes me laugh. She’s an Cleveland-based illustrator, and often posts funny illustrations from her life.
Here’s my personal favorite: her self portrait as a novice skier, feeling like a frozen grape sliding down a mountain: https://www.instagram.com/p/BAz81M3oyPK/?taken-by=ktmarcotte

I love alll of these! Going to scope out some more now. I do illustration on instagram sometimes too!

I came across “jooleeloren”‘s account this year and it’s fantastic.
It’s not an illustrator account but my favourite Instagram is this one. He has amazing taste and style and also writes a fabulous blog about fashion:

The peeing in a romper made my day..
Zoe Si! She is an absolutely brilliant Instagram illustrator (and lawyer) from Vancouver, BC. https://www.instagram.com/zoesees/?hl=en
Loved the bra illustration

My favorite is @ab.bel ! https://instagram.com/p/BKLHcuDD05M/
This is exactly how I wore my hair today. Kismet!
Once, I showed up to a bikini wax in a romper! [insert one million embarrassed face emojis]
So funny! The negative comment one is SO real. I remember being told in 4th grade that I had hair in my nose and I never forgot it! And it didn’t help that he bought me a book and told me had a crush on me. I only thought about my nose hairs. Thanks Christopher. There’s a good This American Life podcast on this: https://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/545/if-you-dont-have-anything-nice-to-say-say-it-in-all-caps
The peeing in a romper one is hilarious – that face at the end! Haha!
Love all these illustrations so much!

Thanks so much for these, Joanna. Such talented ladies! My favorite Romanian illustrator and graphic novel author, with and Instagram feed that’s mostly in English: https://www.instagram.com/p/BRNqh10j9Wy/?taken-by=persoana_fizica
I loooove the Saskia Wariner one. Thanks for introducing so many great artists!

Peeing in a romper just about made me laugh out my sandwich! :) So accurate.
Hahaha, legit laughed out loud at that romper one. Too true.

Mari Andrews posted an illustration called “Autobiography” about the cities that made her who she is, and I basically teared up reading it. It just spoke to me so directly. Thank you for introducing me to her!
I moved every two years growing up and the last one is so spot on! Everything falls perfectly into place just before you go! I loved and identified with all of these, though. Not just that one!
Every time I see a roundup of illustrators on Instagram I vow to keep up with my own page. So I hereby vow (again) to post (almost) every day on ihaveawhiteboardinmyoffice. Wish me luck!
My friend @jkroik is a NYC illustrator who has a museum trolling series that seems right up your alley, Joanna– art, tech, old & new, all intersecting. She posts works in progress constantly, and her work is clever and fresh.
Thanks for sharing these!
Absolutely love this one entitled “People Who Have Seen My Boobs” by new mom Anna Denise Floor: https://www.instagram.com/p/BRMSdlPAtny/?taken-by=annadenisefloor
hahahaha love that!!
Yes, that romper and the perfect bun! Perfect! “Some loose strands in front of ears, not too greasy!” I almost laughed out loud and woke up our toddler next to me in bed.
Gemma Correll forever!
Not much of a romper wearer, but that one totally reminds me of nursing/pumping in a high-necked dress!
And, to echo others, Lucy Knisley’s illustrations of being a new mother are so, so, spot on!
These are great! The positive negative one, romper suit, and braless friday really tickled me. Lots of laughs already – thanks!
The bra one made me laugh and reminded me of an old episode of New Girl in which Zooey Deschanel describes bras as “boob jail.”
Do you know @ab.bel ? Hillarious comics on life with a baby/toddler. Reccomend!
Haha, love the feminist fight club / thank you one. Rings so true!
These are great! A really funny and on-point French illustrator is Cécile Dormeau. Check her out!
The romper one is so spot on. I’m always confused why they’re touted as so easy, when really they’re a pain in the neck. I dread having to use the bathroom. Love all of these!
That’s part of the reason I DESPISE one piece bathing suits!
@imogen.quest! She’s a friend of mine, an inspiring woman in math doing super cool research, and all around A+ person. Her comics make me LOL every time. Check her stuff out! Here’s one of my favorites: http://imogenquest.net/?p=879
Oh, and also Sarah Andersen!
So fantastic! Btw, was thinking today that I’d love to read about what a typical day or week looks like for you. Always so curious as to how all of your wonderful posts come together. I know there is a lot of hard work, creativity and planning that goes into making it look so easy.
thank you! that would be fun to share!
The bun one was spot on! Exactly what was going through my head when I put my hair up today haha
In Aus, we call this the ‘mum bun’ – the do when you can’t be bothered thinking about styling your hair (but it always looks pretty good)
These gave me a nice little laugh! Especially the messy bun chart, so true!

I love these. Especially the feminist-y one.

These are great! They all ring true, but the 2nd one really hits home!
loved these! )
‘Avoid mulletisation’ hahaha!
Too funny!! I just had this jumpsuit conversation with my friend at work. We realized we both use the most remote bathroom in the school when we wear a jumpsuit for extra privacy!

These are great! I love the “Thank You!” one. Something I really need to work on (accepting compliments & not downplaying them).
The positive/negative one reminds me of an article I read in The Atlantic today about how perhaps we’ve gone a little too far with forcing a positive mindset all the time. Sometimes it’s OK to just feel down/angry/sad/hurt/etc. Here it is: https://qz.com/924103/happiness-has-become-an-emotional-burden-says-a-danish-psychologist-svend-brinkmann/?utm_source=atlfb
yes!!! feel so strongly about this! it’s okay to feel bad, sad, mad, or just plain old normal :)
Interesting article, thanks for the link. I feel strongly about this too, especially with letting children know it’s ok to be something other than happy.
I am loving the recent focus on this. As a European prone to RBF (resting bitch face) and living in the US, I am really tired of being expected to be cheerful for no reason. It seems like there is also a gender bias about this. I feel like women are expected to be more pleasant/cheerful at work even if they are not in hospitality type jobs. I am an engineer and I have to responsibility to cheer up my peers. Tell me “smile” one more time and I’ll tell you how I really feel.
*I have /no/ responsibility
The romper!!!
These are great! I’d add Lucy Knisley!
yes!!! good call. i loved french milk.
Thanks for sharing these! The bun one made me laugh out loud. I’m finding Catana Comics really cute and funny : ) https://www.instagram.com/catanacomics/
hahaha love her style, thank you for the recommendation, val!
Lucy Knisely! I think you introduced me to her work by recommending “French Milk,” and she’s since gotten married and had a baby, all of which she illustrates in earnest and lovely comics on her insta – check her out!
You have to check out Lucy Knisley, she is a genius. Her illustrations about early motherhood are SPOT. ON. https://www.instagram.com/lucyknisley/?hl=en
I’m laughing at the bun one because my husband and I are in constant debate over my “whispies” in the back. They drive him nuts, but my hair is so fine and I can’t stand the look of a “clip” back there so they just fall down. Also- let it be known that it’s a tiny amount of hair- not a ton! Anyway. The other day he actually suggested that I just CUT THEM OFF. Umm… what?!
Must add @Jooleeloren!

Love her!!
omg YES! she is amazing!! this one made me lol: http://cupjo.co/2mh18Qu
oh yes JooLeeLoren crushes it on insta. So good.
And that’s why I don’t wear rompers. LMAO!
The “Positive/Negative” one is sadly too true! Also, I actually laughed out loud at the one dissecting the bun!! Hahaha
Me too!
Needed that one today. Thank for sharing, Joanna.
