Allbirds Are The Best Shoes for Travel

This weekend, a few members of the Cup of Jo team flew to Mexico City for a quick work trip. It was our first time there, and there was so much to love — meandering streets overflowing with jacaranda trees, the warm hospitality of the people we met, and shrimp tacos so delicious we found ourselves nodding in unison. Here are a few photos of the trip (including my Allbirds, which I never took off)…

Every time I travel, the same thing always goes down: I wear my comfy airport clothes 99% of the trip. They’re always more comfortable than whatever I stuffed in my suitcase. When there’s so much to see (eat) in a new place, why would anyone reach for the fussy pieces that drive you nuts? As my parents used to say on family vacations, “We don’t have time for that.” For this trip, I lived in my Allbirds sneakers.

Allbirds has a warm-weather style called Tree Runners, which are made from naturally-derived eucalyptus tree fiber. They’re light, breathable and exactly what you want to wear with a busy day ahead of you. I know people sometimes say shoes feel like you’re walking on clouds, but these seriously feel like you’re walking on clouds. Three people actually stopped me at the airport, pointed at my shoes and gave me a thumbs up. They, too, were hooked.

Our first stop in Mexico City was El Pescadito Condesa. We ordered the shrimp tacos, cold beer and horchata.

After lunch, we spent the afternoon wandering around La Condesa, a tree-lined neighborhood with Art Deco architecture, friendly cyclists and sidewalk cafés.

We then stopped into El Moro for churros.

The churrería dishes up fresh fried dough — served still hot — and eight choices of hot chocolate. We dipped our churros into the Spanish hot chocolate, which was thick and sweet, and the Mexican hot chocolate, which was fluffy and spicy. They also sell a consuelo de chocolate, an ice cream sandwich, with coiled churros on each end. Because!!!!! The original location is open 24-hours, every day of the week.

We were lucky to be able to see a few other Mexico City highlights:

  • Cuadra San Cristobal: A modernist ranch designed in 1968 by architect Luis Barragán, who said, “I think the ideal space must contain elements of magic, serenity, sorcery and mystery.” The horse stables, gardens and pools are designed with contemporary lines and graphic colors (except green, because Barragán leaves that color to nature). It’s breathtaking.
  • Rosetta: Tucked inside a colonial townhouse with vintage floral wallpaper is chef Elena Reygadas’s Italian restaurant. We feasted on the sweet rosemary rolls, handmade pasta and cheesy breadsticks that are taller than the table.
  • Ciudadela Market: This traditional-style Mexican market is filled with artisan booths and folk art. Plus, embroidered pillows, silver jewelry and little kids playing the fiercest game of sardines in history.
  • Overall, I can’t recommend Allbirds enough for making sightseeing a pleasure. My phone says I walked over 20,000 steps each day, but I didn’t think twice about my feet. The Tree Runners that I love come in different colors, like Charcoal, Chalk, Stone and Navy, and are perfect for summer travels. They also have other styles, like the Tree Skippers and Tree Loungers.

Have you been to Mexico City, or do you live there? What would you recommend? We’d love to hear any insider tips!
