How Are You?

Lena Corwin

We’re in California for a quick family vacation, and I’m excited to post about our trip next week. It’s beautiful but freezing here!

Meanwhile, I hope you are doing well. I would love to hear how things are going. If you’re up for it, here’s a little pop quiz:

Something delicious you ate recently:
What you’re looking forward to these days:
What’s worrying you:
A trip you’d take, if you could go anywhere:
Your childhood celebrity crush:

My friend Anna sometimes asks, “What’s your emotional temperature?” especially when someone is going through a big change. I love that expression — it reminds you that your emotions aren’t a fixed state, even about a specific decision or experience, and that you might feel differently soon. If you’re up for sharing, what’s your emotional temperature today, too?

Sending lots of love, as always! Thank you so much for being here. xoxo

P.S. How to write a condolence note, and the most beautiful thing you’ve ever read.

  1. Cat says...

What I’m worried about is requiring so much of my focus these days that it’s the only question on this list I can think about answering. So without further ado: I’m worried about the divorce I’m currently going through. I never, EVER thought my future-former spouse and I would be here. In addition to feeling the intense grief of losing my partner (it’s complicated but I feel more like he died — this is not a “congratulations you’re moving on from that terrible person you were chained to” story) I am worried sick about how this will affect my kids (four and seven) both now and going forward. I’m worried that I’m going to spend every penny and more on legal fees and be broke or in debt forever, worried that I’m going to burn myself out trying to be everything to my kids now that their dad is less involved, worried about whether he’s taking care of them when he IS involved, worried that I don’t make enough money now that more of the financial burden is on me, worried that my kids are sad, worried that my kids are mad, worried at whether I’m going to be able to handle teenagers on my own one day, worried that this situation has become a constant stress and source of sadness for my parents and sisters, worried that my friends are tired of talking about it, worried that I’m going to be alone forever, worried that I won’t be alone forever, worried, worried, worried.
I’m lucky that my parents have been married for almost 40 years and until now I had no appreciation for the emotional, logistical, and financial difficulty of divorce — but I know I’m not the only one out there. That in mind, I’ve been wondering if you all would ever do a post on divorce in your relationships series? I was thinking something like your “Raising Teenagers” format would be so amazing for this subject — just to be able to hear from people who have been through it or are going through it would be so helpful, and because the folks who comment here are so thoughtful and supportive I think there would be value for lots of people (myself included, obviously).
Just a thought – thanks for all that you all do.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

what an amazing idea, cat. that would be an incredible post and deeply resonate with so many people. i’m so sorry about all you’re going through. i’ll be holding you close in my thoughts today. xoxo

    • Cat says...

Thanks Joanna, that means a lot. xo

    • Emily says...

cat – just wanted to say i’m sorry for what your going through and sending you a warm hug. i’m not married and don’t have children, but i think this post would be very valuable, as it only enhances the empathy we all feel towards those experiencing the type of difficult situation you are doing through.
      ((((hugs to you))))

    • Cat says...

Thank you so much for your incredibly kind comment Emily — sending hugs back.

    • El says...

Cat, I’m so sorry to hear that you are going through this. I just happened to fall upon your comment after an especially trying day with my own spouse. We have been together for 16 years (since high school), married for 9, and have had many highs and lows. Divorce has crossed my mind many times, not because of any major issues (no infedelity, addictions, abuse, etc.) but just so many little ones, an endless amount of fights, and I fear an underlying incompatibility. We have two young children, 2 and 4 and I am terrified at how that would affect them and as well as list of other fears that you just stated. I’d also be interested in a post about how you know when it’s time for a divorce and alternatively how to repair a broken marriage and how to tell that it’s beyond repair. Sending hugs your way and to anyone who is entertaining or going through this heartbreaking ordeal. Xo

    • Cat says...

Thank you so much for your note El, and I’m so sorry about your day and the ongoing worry. I think your post idea is a great one — those are questions so many of us struggle with. Will be thinking of you and sending hugs.

  2. Paige says...

Something delicious you ate recently: It sounds boring, but I made some garlic quinoa and ended up adding bell peppers, green onions, and avocado to it for lunch. It turned out pretty amazing (I’ve been sick for a week and that was the only thing my tastebuds could pick up on).
What you’re looking forward to these days: Any free moment where I can get back to my piano. I’m learning it for the first time, and it’s weirdly helping my creative writing and is keeping me calm.
What’s worrying you: Work, Dad in and out of the hospital, long distance boyfriend in and out of the hospital.
A trip you’d take, if you could go anywhere: Normally I’d probably say Greece or Iceland, but right now I’d really like to be in the Netherlands so I could dote on my boyfriend. I hate that I can’t be there for him.
Your childhood celebrity crush: Leonardo DiCaprio. I was a Titanic girl.

  3. John Marcone says...

Just started an interest in blogging during a rough patch and this inquiry is pretty interesting so, let’s!

    1. I had a provolone mozzarella sandwich yesterday, but that’s weak for me being in a very traditional Italian household, during finals week I’ve been eating a lot less, I know that’s the opposite of what I should be doing, don’t follow my lead.
    2. I’m looking forward to college after this year and visiting my schools that accepted me over spring break, I can’t wait to meet my options and future.
    3. I worry about my test scores and my relationships, they’re not as healthy as they were and I can be anxious and impatient.
    4. If I could travel anywhere I’d want to head to Santa Cruz or San Luis Obispo, the destination of my two dream schools I didn’t get into and I’m mourning it a tad.

  4. Lindsey says...

Something delicious you ate recently: I made gluten-free avocado toast topped with salted and roasted spaghetti squash seeds, a fried egg, and some crushed red pepper for breakfast at home today! Yummmm
What you’re looking forward to these days: I’m visiting Peru this summer which is exciting in and of itself, but I’ve also started hiking locally most weekends in preparation for the trip and I’m absolutely loving the combo of exercise and being out in nature.
What’s worrying you: I may travel overseas for my next work project (could be up to 6 months) and although it’s an exciting opportunity and I love to travel, it will be hard to be away from home and my husband for that long.
A trip you’d take, if you could go anywhere: New Zealand is near the top of my list, but in all honesty I could say that about so many places.

Ate: just got back from Mexico where we ate our weight in fresh shrimp and fish ceviche, guacamole and fresh mangoes!
Looking forward to: warmer weather and planting new spring flowers! also, i’m going to get a massage later today and can’t wait!
Worries: I own a small business and it’s always tough just navigating what’s next; hiring new staff, how to grow and change and keep things fresh, etc.
Trip: would love to go back to Barcelona and take my husband. I studied abroad there TEN years ago and have been aching to get back ever since!
Childhood crush: I grew up dancing and would go to dance conventions around the country where I met and subsequently fell in love with Wade Robson. He did choreography for a ton of music videos in the early 2000’s and is, allegedly, the person Britney Spears cheated on JT with. *drama* Google him and watch him dance; you’ll see why he always had screaming/crying 13 year old’s following him around at dance conventions :)

The future of the world and US is worrying me these days. Also, the complicated relationship with one of my kids, age nearly 9. Is 8 a “difficult age”? Please say it is so for others. : (

    What’s worrying you:
Whether or not my period will become regular + I’ll get pregnant now that I’m off the pill and trying. I’m trying to play it cool with my emotions and “not stress” but that’s also an annoying piece of advice. Love these posts! Look forward to reading some of the comments… Here’s mine:

Something delicious you ate recently: Elenore of Earthsprout’s Chocolate & Black Bean mud cake. Delicious! And a sneaky way to get more protein/general nutrition into our carb-loving picky eater.

What you’re looking forward to these days:
A four-night stay in the woods with my sister and her family. Classic UK break at Center Parcs.

What’s worrying you: The FREEZING weather forecast for the week ahead for our break and how we’ll get the two babies to sync their naps…. or take them at all with two crazy four-year-olds around!

A trip you’d take, if you could go anywhere: West Coast California. My husband and I did this same trip before we had kids and I’d love to do it again one day just the two of us ❤️

Your childhood celebrity crush: Jordan Catalano from My So-Called Life. I had to interview Jared Leto years later when working for a guitar magazine and I was a jibbering mess! He wasn’t wearing the plaid shirt, unfortunately (!!).

    • sasha says...

      You met Jared Leto!?!

      LUCKY!!!!!!!!!

Something delicious you ate recently: Tuna tempura at this great sushi place in Vancouver. It’s the best!
What you’re looking forward to these days: Nothing and everything.

-Childhood celebrity crush was…wait for it…Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez from The Sandlot, NO QUESTION. Although I once wrote Josh Hartnett a fan letter where I basically told him repeatedly “you’re so hot” (never sent and found years later. still mortified for myself)

Something delicious you ate recently: Salted caramel French butter cookies

What you’re looking forward to these days: Going to Los Angeles and Palm Springs in a week!

What’s worrying you: I need to get blood work done. I’ve lost some weight recently for no reason and my doctor suspects it’s probably nothing or possibly thyroid issues, but I fear the worst. Also, the colon hydrotherapy place I went to 2 years ago was recently in the news for being shut down due to unsanitary conditions and the public health unit called all past patients. I was advised to get tested for Hepatitis A, B, C and HIV. Could you imagine??

A trip you’d take, if you could go anywhere: I really want to go back to Paris with my sister, but we were just there in September! :)

My husband went to Providence a few days ago and picked me up a traditional gyro with everything from East Side Pocket and it was incredible. Incredible!!!

I’m feeling a little curmudgeony about this cold weather and my toddler is going through a tough phase so I’m looking most forward to warm spring weather, that seems like a cure all at the moment.

My toddlers tantrums are worrying me and making me feel like I’m doing it all wrong; he’s slightly speech delayed, bangs his head when he’s frustrated, and has been waking up at 4 am for months. But when he’s happy, which is most often, he’s loving, empathic, funny, and delightful.

I’d love a trip to Cape Town with just my husband. Warm, beautiful and kind people, amazing food, need I go on?

Patrick Swayze was my dream man at way too young an age. I still swoon when I see his old films.

    • I used to live in Providence — East Side Pockets is so good, isn’t it?? :)

  54. Saz says...

    Something delicious you ate recently:
Sadly, I’m struggling to think of anything! Thing is, I love to cook, and I know the recipes for loads of delicious things… Clearly I need to get back into it!
What you’re looking forward to these days:
Longer Spring/Summer evenings. On of my favourite things to do when the evenings draw out, is to drive home, park, and then go for a walk around the neighbourhood. It takes about 30 minutes, and I love to look at the people out and about, and gaze into people’s windows.
    What’s worrying you:
Work. Kind of. I seem to get along really great for a couple of months, and then have some sort of drama! It’s tiring and frustrating. I’m in a drama phase at the moment, and when this happens I really have to put my head down and commit to it. And then I don’t have time to Human and I end up getting tired and sick.
A trip you’d take, if you could go anywhere:
A week on a sun-lounger in Cape Verde sounds perfect. I went there two summers in a row in ’15/’16 and both times it was perfect. I slept naked on my top-floor hotel room balcony, under the stars, with the noise of the ocean nearby, and I’ve never felt more… animalistic… and… part of the universe.

A trip you’d take, if you could go anywhere:
The Galapagos on the newest best Cunard ship in the best stateroom with my family. (Why I am looking forward to winning the lottery)

    Your childhood celebrity crush:
Maverick from Top Gun. Remember ?…

    • Chantal says...

If I can make a recommendation on this one – go to the Galapagos on a smaller ship!! They can get around to more places, and with only 12-16 people on the ship, you can do a lot more activities. We did a trip through the islands on a 16 passenger boat, and we got to explore most of the islands we wanted to, and always had time to stop and snorkel around at least once if not more times a day! It was glorious… It felt like a private tour!

    • Jessica says...

I second the Galapagos on a smaller ship! We went on a ~12 person ship, and it was the greatest! Also it tends to be a lot cheaper and you still have a guide on your boat (all boats are required to) so you can have frequent conversations with the guide!

What you’re looking forward to these days: A trip to Mexico City with my fiancé in two weeks!
What’s worrying you: finding a job, planning my wedding, a couple deadlines I have tomorrow (yes, three deadlines on a Saturday, #gradschoollife), whether my new anxiety meds are working (after years of ignoring mental health, I decided to try medication for 3 months and take it from there), whether the fact that I’ve gotten a headache at 9pm the last two nights is a side effect and whether that will happen again tonight.
A trip you’d take, if you could go anywhere: Uruguay. I was just talking to a friend from there this morning (he’s from there), and he was describing the food culture. It sounds amazing!
Your childhood celebrity crush: I didn’t really have any. I wasn’t really the boy-crazy type. But I would have died to be BFFs with Lindsay Lohan after the Parent Trap!

The state of our country is worrying me. My husband being a teacher and school gun violence worries me. Being able to save money for a family vacation worries me and being able to maintain being a social worker…burnt out. Sigh

Hi Ladies! I hope you’re all well. Sending you love and hugs.

The shrimp buns and Momufuku. I’m a regular at the CCDC location and every single trip requires an order of the shrimp buns.

What you’re looking forward to these days:
I start a new job that is a big promotion. I’ve been working for this moment for a long time and might I say I am really proud of myself for finally getting here.

Also looking forward to letting having one of those super emotional cries with tears of joy.

    What’s worrying you:
The prospect of introducing babies into my life. I love where I am and can’t imagine it being any other way. I have an incredible (the man is a saint) significant other who is planning to propose any day now; I suspect. We want to have kids but I am terrified I won’t be able to be a great wife, mother and professional.

A trip you’d take, if you could go anywhere:
    Mauritius

Something delicious: Vegetarian nachos and a frozen swirl at Pepe’s in Norman, Oklahoma.
Looking forward to: Getting home to my husband and baby today. It’s my first week back at work after maternity leave for my first child, and it was her first day at day care today. So many emotions.
What’s worrying you: How do you pump at work without spilling milk all over the floor and yourself? I’m staring at a pool of liquid at my feet and drips on my jeans. Seriously?! Help! And . . . how long can I take this? Will I quit my job to be a stay-at-home mom? I never anticipated that, but I also never anticipated the strong emotions and attachment, and we could make it–the finances would be so tight, but we could make it, I think . . .
A trip: The Twin Cities in the snow
Celebrity crush: The male lead on “While You Were Sleeping.” Bill Pullman?

    • Amy says...

Hang in there! That first week back is no joke. Finding a new normal takes some time. :) My #1 pump-at-work tip was to store all my pump parts in a ziplock in the fridge through the day; worked great and saved some hassle. And maybe check out a hands-free pumping bra if you don’t have one already. Good luck, mama!

    • Princess hajjar says...

Em – I’m also in Oklahoma! I have spilled milk all over myself pumping at work so many times. A few things have helped me… good pumping bra so you’re truly hands free and those pump and save bags can be great too. Good luck new mama ❤️❤️❤️

    • em says...

Thank you, Amy, and Princess Hajjar. Both of your kind advice made my week (and I read it as I spilled yet another bottle of milk all over myself at the office, so it was especially timely!). I am going to look for a hands-free pumping bra, and thank you for the ziplock bag and fridge tip.
In other news, I’m glad to bump into another Oklahoman on Cup of Jo! I really appreciate this encouraging community of women–so glad I stumbled across this site while I was pregnant. Thank you . . .

What’s worrying you: I am a resident doctor and am having a really hard time in residency. The schedule is grueling and I miss my husband and one year old so much. At times I’m wondering if this is even the right path for me. It’s tough because I am so grateful to have been able to make it to this point in my career after many hard (but enjoyable!) years of study. I know part of it is a mental game (just make it through the next couple of years and then enjoy job flexibility, etc.) but I have thoughts of wanting to quit on a daily basis and know I’ll never be able to get the time back with my baby. I just don’t feel like myself anymore.
Where you’d go on a trip: anywhere in France

    • Blandine says...

Hang in there! Sending you lots and lots of strength! It will get easier!

    Thanks for asking, Joanna! :)

Something delicious you ate recently: I’ve been eating so much crap lately. :( My body is definitely rejecting it. After watching Chef’s Table this week, I jumped up and made a bowl of random delicious things I had in my fridge! Butter leaf lettuce + blue cheese + almond slivers, turkey taco meat, sliced Italian meats + cheese squares, and red wine. :)

What you’re looking forward to these days: Ah, man. I’m looking forward to….. Better weather! It’s been down here in the Midwest and the pressure is killing my sinuses! Haven’t seen the sun in 4 days. Sad.

What’s worrying you: Hmm… My health. I’m having a real struggle getting back into a gym routine and also back to eating in a healthy way. I vacillate between feeling uncomfortable in my body and trying not to worry so much about food!

A trip you’d take, if you could go anywhere: Anywhere!! I love road trips. :) I’d love to make it out to Cali, as I’ve never been. But would also hit up Orlando and see my best friend.

Your childhood celebrity crush: So many! Christian Slater, JTT, Rider Strong…etc. etc. etc.

  84. something delicious i ate recently: hand cooked by a loved one with great care – the selection of the ingredients and the attention to the preparation, makes the food really delicious. Recently while visiting a best friend in Manhattan, she had laid out a bowl of dry delicate rice noodles prepared for me, while taking care of hyper energetic 2 year old. She had sautéed the noodles with traditional Indian spices, curry leaves, ginger, dried red pepper and the rest.. so heart filling.

I’m looking forward to: Creating opportunities for the work I’ve created, to find a home in the culture and lives of the human beings, meant for it.
What you’re looking forward to these days..

I worry – about failing inadvertently any one of my creations – relationships and work projects…

A trip I’d take: quiet meaningful sanctuaries that are local or far away, that give my relationships more meaning and perspective…

A childhood celebrity crush: Jane Austen’s Men (Knightley & Darcy)!! and Ralph Fiennes…

  85. Sharon in Scotland says...

I took inspiration from 3 different chicken recipes and made chicken braised in a spice paste/coconut milk/loads of sweet pots……………it was lovely.
I’m looking forward to having my week in a cottage by the sea in Berriedale, (Caithness, far north of Scotland) in March, no phone signal, apart from a sweet spot on the gravel path, usually when it is chucking a gale, no wifi or T.V. just DVD’s, radio, naps, food, red wine and views.
I work with a paediatrician in a neurodevelopmental assessment clinic, helping to diagnose, (or not) autism……………still worried about getting it right and being able finesse my skills……………..I want to be able to see everything and interpret it correctly.
If I could go anywhere, it would be the Shetlands, ideally to live and work.
I didn’t really have crushes when I was a child. I do remember being completely obsessed with Gerald Depardieu, (before he got bloated and deeply creepy) I went to see Cyrano De Bergerac and had it on DVD, wept like a baby every time, especially at the end.

  86. Something delicious you ate recently: lobster at home on Valentines Night ?
What you’re looking forward to these days: a 4 day family holiday in April & my Aunt arriving from NZ for a month ?
What’s worrying you: missing my Dad & my recently widowed Mum’s well-being
A trip you’d take, if you could go anywhere: slowly through NZ & Australia seeing the beauty, introducing our kids to a slower life & seeing my family & friends in both those countries
Your childhood celebrity crush: John Travolta ?

    • Ellie E says...

Sending a virtual hug to you. Your note about missing your dad and your widowed mum’s well being touched a chord with me. I share both sentiments. My dad passsd away 8 months ago, and well, I just feel extra for any others in similar circumstances.

    • Emily says...

I’m in the same boat. Lost my dad and miss him terribly. One book that’s really helped me: “Dead mom’s club” – a memoir that nails the experience of grieving a parent and how to cope.

  87. Nicola says...

    Something delicious you ate recently:
The chocolate orange birthday cake that my mum baked for my son’s 15th birthday. Basically an orange sponge with orange flavoured chocolate flaked through the mix. Chocolate orange buttercream filling and topped with Terrys Chocolate orange pieces. Divine!

What you’re looking forward to these days:
Spring, sunshine, being able to dry clothes outside, colour in the garden.

    What’s worrying you:
My dad has recently been diagnosed with Parkinsons and isn’t coping well. This worries me a lot.

A trip you’d take, if you could go anywhere:
I would go back to the Fall River in Estes Park, Colorado. My husband’s family is from Colorado and we have travelled from Ireland twice for summer holidays. We just loved Estes, the mountains, the cherry pie, the people, the wildlife, all of it.

    Your childhood celebrity crush:
Jason Bateman, and George Michael, and Morten Harket from Aha!

  88. EE says...

What you’re looking forward to these days:
The Alameda Flea, good friends’ weddings

    What’s worrying you:
I love him, am I in love with him? I live with him, when the lease is up do I move out? Do certain parts of our relationship outweigh other parts that feel like deal breakers? Is there someone more suited for me out there?
    fuck.

A trip you’d take, if you could go anywhere:
    I don’t know anymore…

    Your childhood celebrity crush:
    Paul McCartney

    Emotional Temperature:
    numb : /

    • Andrea says...

FWIW, when I met my husband, I had an overwhelming sense of wanting him in my life forever. I really knew that he was the person for me, his and my shortcomings notwithstanding. It was that singular a sensation–he was different than anyone I had ever been in a relationship with and I couldn’t walk away from that feeling.

    • Ashley says...

I’m sorry about your worry, dear. It is my worry, too.
Sometimes it can feel like the rest of my life is waiting behind two curtains. Behind one curtain is a life full of warmth, bliss and all things good, while behind the other continues the road of uncertainty, and you don’t know what’s behind each curtain.
I try to remember that life will always have beauty and pain despite any of our choices. I’ve placed so much pressure on my heart to feel a certainty that isn’t there. Be gentle on yourself and trust that you’ll be okay no matter the outcome. The light you’re looking for may be faint but hidden by clouds of fear.
Wishing you the best. You’re not alone. xox

  89. Annie says...

I love these comments. I’m sharing mine, because I’ve been meaning to write you an email thanking Lucy for her Ted Talk. See below:

Something delicious you ate recently: I’ve been doing so much emotional eating lately, and I both crave it and hate it. Super thin pancakes are high on the list though.

What you’re looking forward to these days: Decorating our home. We need furniture, but first we need to see what our taxes hold for us. Patience is not my key.

What’s worrying you: My best friend is dying from brain cancer. I’m thankful I got to spend a lot of time with her recently. I had been sticking my head in the sand, but Lucy’s Ted Talk about death made me step up my game and go over there consistently, even if it was awkward or emotionally draining for me. My friend is also 38.

A trip you’d take, if you could go anywhere: Well, I’d wanted to take bff on a trip to Europe, but we ran out of time. I’ve been fortunate to go to a lot of pretty cool places, but I’m more focused on home now.

Your childhood celebrity crush: JTT, for->!

  90. jac says...

Something delicious you ate recently: I made yellow curry in my crockpot.
What you’re looking forward to these days: A trip with my niece.
What’s worrying you: Getting the job I want. (cross your fingies)
A trip you’d take, if you could go anywhere: Florence or Stockholm
Your childhood celebrity crush: JTT (duh.)

When are you guys going to give in and move to California?

  91. Mia says...

I miss You when u r Not there, Joanna.

  92. Recently, my husband made a mac and cheese with 4 amazing cheeses. We had extra melty cheese, so when the pasta was baking, we dunked crusty bread (which he also made – yes, I won the jackpot!) into it. Cheese on cheese on cheese forever.

Looking forward to: watching 2 of my best friends become mamas in the next few months and holding their babies; visiting a new chocolatier down the street; a business collaboration with a dear friend; a day trip with my husband and daughter; the future in general.

I’m really trying, lately, to trust in the universe and not worry. I recently read You Are a Badass, and one of the main takeaways: Your faith in the unknown must be greater than your fear. That said, I had such intense anxiety after Parkland. But then we rallied at our state capitol, and after witnessing the energy there and the amazing youth response, my trust has returned.

I don’t know where I’d go – I want to go everywhere! I’d love to take my daughter on a mother-daughter trip to a place of her choosing. And to travel Italy as a family.

Childhood celeb crush: Aaron Carter. (I cried myself to sleep the night that I saw him kiss Hilary Duff on Lizzie McGuire!)

  93. 1. My husband recently made sage and butternut squash ravioli from scratch. We have no reason to eat out ever again.

    2. Spring. And buying rubber boots. (Anyone else’s feet grow in pregnancy? I have to replace ALL my footwear.)

    3. I took time off from a freelance-writing career to have two kids, with no real career/childcare/financial plan. And while I regret NONE of this, now my worries revolve around finding creative/personal fulfilment while the little ones still need me.

    4. New Zealand. On the coast somewhere. Or Paris. With money to burn and no rush to return home.

    5. Freddie Prinze Jr. But I refused to put his poster on my wall…just in case he came to visit. I needed to look cool.

    • Emily says...

I did the same in terms of career – trying to stay upbeat about the freedom to choose.

  94. Schylar says...

Something delicious you ate recently: Bailey’s Chocolate Chip Cheesecake (I live in Dublin, so many desserts are Bailey’s-related)
What you’re looking forward to these days: 2.5 month trip to the Dolomites, Tuscany, Croatia, Hungary, and Austria!
What’s worrying you: What direction I want to head career-wise upon returning to the States next year. Not sure how to find “my passion” and stick to it.
A trip you’d take, if you could go anywhere: Besides the one I’m planning, I’d love to go Buenos Aires and Patagonia
Your childhood celebrity crush: Dev Patel (though that wasn’t so long ago and I still crush on him)

  95. Caitlin says...

An icebreaker I learned at a past job was to ask the question, “What’s your internal weather report?”
It’s such a cool way to think about and share how we’re feeling. It works for adults and kiddos!

  96. Sarah says...

Something delicious you ate recently: Buttery pasta with heaps of cheese and pepper, alongside a glass of shiraz.
What you’re looking forward to these days: Warmer temperatures, a spring break trip to Puerto Rico and finishing the romance novel I’m writing.
What’s worrying you: Why my 18 month old crawled out of the crib last night. My relationship. Also, Donald Trump – every day.
A trip you’d take, if you could go anywhere: Thailand.
Your childhood celebrity crush: Heath Ledger in A Knight’s Tale

    • Ann-Marie says...

Oh Heath was so good in that! And 10 Things I Hate About You around that time, too. <3

  97. —Last night I made the veggie burritos with black bean hummus that you posted the other day. OMG they were fabulous. Smokey, sweet, and salty. Perfection. I can’t wait to put them in my rotation. I loved it enough to it write down and put it in my recipe box. That’s how you know I actually loved it.
—I’m moving to NYC for three months this spring while my husband finishes up a work project there, and I’m sooo excited. When I’m in NYC I feel like a more authentic and vibrant version of myself. Everyone puts thenselves on display in the most inspiring ways. It makes me feel so free. I’ll be living in Harlem. Does anyone have tips on where I should spend my time while I’m there?
—Moving to NYC for three months! I’m a therapist, so leaving my clients for that amount of time feels hard. Also, I don’t know many people in the city, so I wonder if I’m going to be able to make friends and if I’m going to feel lonely while my husband is working long hours.
—Hands down, Orcas Island. I’ve been there a dozen times already, but I never get sick of it. There is something so magical and spiritual about that little island. I would rent a cabin by the ocean and read and cook fabulous meals for myself.
—Anton Apollo Ono, the American speed skater ??‍♀️

  98. Liz says...

    Something delicious you ate recently:
Last night I made a variation of this chicken–https://foolproofliving.com/mediterranean-lemon-chicken/ — and it was sooo salty and good!

What you’re looking forward to these days:
I just signed up for a CorePower membership, so I’m excited to start yoga sculpt-ing every week!

    What’s worrying you:
I am an event planner and have a big wedding tomorrow for a finicky client. I know everything will go well but I still have the pre-event butterflies.

A trip you’d take, if you could go anywhere:
I have been dying to go to Tulum and Banff for the last year or so– totally different places but both so cool! I am hoping to get to one or the other for a birthday trip this year :)

    Your childhood celebrity crush:
OMG so many. Have always been in love with Leo DiCaprio (still am) and had a MASSIVE crush on one of the Hanson brothers, but I can’t remember which now!

  99. joanna says...

    1. Green Bean Casserole: You know like the down home, trash recipe, Thanksgiving version, full of sodium and canned mushroom soup. Don’t judge, I was craving it and it was a warm hug in a bowl. Extra fried onions and absolutely zero regret.
    2. A weekend of NO plans! First time in forever with absolutely nothing on the agenda.
    3. Worried about so many things but mostly am I too old to become a mom. I am 37 and feel the pressure. I buried my own mom in August and I’m not ready. She died so young, at 65. Everyone else certainly is ready for me too and its all making me sweat. I think people think it will “help” me but I cant imagine becoming a mother while grieving my own. Who will I call in the middle of the night. My father passed when I was young as well. I have a solid partner, but were not even married, were interracial and all of the sudden my catholic family no longer cares about any of that and would just like me pregnant. I also feel like I’m running out of time – this one keeps me up at night.
    4. Fiji – if only I could teleport. Its a 16 hour flight and from what I understand its worth it. That or the Azore Islands in Portugal. I would love to see my roots.
    5. Joey from NKOTB. I had the posters, the TShirts, the bedding, and the $800 phone bill from calling a 900 number just to listen to his voice over and over and over. I didn’t know there was a charge! I got busted for that one, but man what a good laugh now!

Side note: I’m obsessed with this group of lady bosses. You all rock and restore my faith in humanity.

    • Lana says...

Portugal is my favorite European country. The people, food, terrain and history are fantabulous! Go, ASAP! Kids are the best thing on the planet. Make sure you have a solid partnership. Hugs

    • Emily says...

I am so sorry for your loss. It’s true that there will be lots of times you’ll miss your mom as you hold a new baby… but don’t let that hold you back. I lost my dad this past year and I have to tell myself – he would want me to go on. If you can connect with another pregnant mom, or a mom who has been there, you can text them in the middle of the night, when you’re worried or just wondering – that meant the world to me with my baby. You can build your mom tribe!! Go for it – you’ll have 10 months to mentally prepare.

    • joanna says...

Thank you Lana and Emily. I love that you can send a message to a total stranger and all of the sudden, I feel a little less alone.

Thank you for the words Emily. Your so right and I think that’s why God gives you ten months! Thank you so much!! I’m sorry to hear about your dad too. Hugs to you!!!!

Looking forward to warmer, rainless days.
Where I’d go: a cruise of the Mediterranean
Worrying over multiple things as usual: money, family, etc.
Childhood celeb crush: Burt Ward, who was Robin/Dick Grayson on the original Batman TV series. And Paul McCartney, of course.

    • MB says...

I just learned about Raising Cane! I live in Charlottesville and apparently we have one here! I’ll have to check it out!

  101. Alexandra says...

Actually, it was veggie lasagna the recipe of which I took from your site. It was really delicious. But my husbans still thinks it would be better with beef:)
Now I’m taking driving lessons, so I’m looking forward the time I could drive easily with no stress at all. It seems impossible for now.
I’m worried if I’m capable of driving a car:)
I have an idea for a long time after I heard the song Mekong River Delta to have a trip to that place. It seems very calm to me.
My crush was Matthew Perry from Friends. I still think he’s adorable.

  102. Cas says...

Something delicious you ate recently: I drank a yummy locally brewed IPA from my home state of Maine, which was a special treat as a newer mama whose appetite for alcohol has been nil
What you’re looking forward to these days: summer! As a teacher, sometimes students don’t recognize we love summer just as much as they do (maybe more!)
What’s worrying you: My grandmother’s health. She was hospitalized this week with pneumonia and our extended family, all of whom live out of state, are scrambling to make travel plans to see her in the near future.
A trip you’d take, if you could go anywhere: Somewhere that I could be with my family and my daughter, and have an extra pair of hands to play with her when my husband and I needed an hour to be just us
Your childhood celebrity crush: the least beloved New Kids on the Block member, Jonathan, who I thought was my best chance since everyone seemed to love Joey or Donnie… ahh the logic of a 7 year old!

  103. Robin says...

    1. Classic empty fridge spaghetti. Made a white sauce with leftover whipping cream, cream cheese, and parmesan. Added very wilted kale, garlic, ancient shallots, and freezer burned MAPLE breakfast sausage. The skimpy ingredients transformed into decadent comfort food.
    2. I’m looking forward to Spring. The cherry blossom trees were just starting to bloom and then we got a dump of snow. So close, yet so far.
    3. Work is worrying me, and my place at work. Should I stick it out at this company a little longer? Should I jump ship? Do I deserve the praise and acknowledgement that I crave, or am I being entitled?
    4. I’m torn between a ski holiday and a sunny holiday. White snow, or white sand? The eternal dilemma.
    5. Does an animated character count? If yes, then I crushed hard on Aladdin.

    • gracesface says...

“3. Work is worrying me, and my place at work. Should I stick it out at this company a little longer? Should I jump ship? Do I deserve the praise and acknowledgement that I crave, or am I being entitled?”

I feel the EXACT same way. Constantly debating an exit date…:/ Really don’t know what to do.

Your childhood celebrity crush: Aladdin. Don’t fight me on this.

  106. Laura says...

Delicious food: Dutch baby pancake with real maple syrup
    Excitement: baby #2 due soon!
Worry: just found out yesterday baby isn’t growing as well as they should, so worried that the placenta will stop working and baby will either need to be induced early or will have some other serious problem.
Travel: I would love to sit on a beach somewhere for a week. Maybe in Costa Rica, where my husband and I had a wonderful vacation some years ago.
Crush: JTT from ToolTime. Man that feels like a lifetime ago.
