12 Black and White Basics

12 Black and White Basics

What have you been wearing lately? This winter, one look I’ve been loving is a black or white outfit with a deep red lip. For example, I’ve been wearing this super soft sweater (it feels like a teddy bear), paired with this lipstick in Charlotte. Here are a few more pretty pieces to wear on rotation…

Thoughts? What do you like? (This shirt is another favorite.)

P.S. A random wardrobe saver, and pretty necklaces.

Hi Jo, mind sharing the deets on the earrings? Thanks a bunch!

    • Lauren says...

Agreed! I want the deets on these earrings. Also, I totally cosign the Charlotte color of the nars lipstick. It is my go to when I want a statement lip.

i loved all the clothes . it’s so minimal and cute this is exactly my style of clothing I’m still improving it to be minimal and comfy ! keep posting these inspirinng posts

  3. K.C. says...

These are lovely pieces and I love a winter white, but I admit in February I can’t dress like this–I am all about adding bright pink or yellow to my outfits to brighten my mood on gray days. Dreaming of spring!

  4. Kate says...

I love that chenille is back. I have been looking for a vintage chenille top ever since I noticed the trend coming back and I the other day I found a beautiful little sweater with puffed sleeves that I believe is from the 70s at the thrift store for $2!! Score!

  5. Alex H. says...

Love these so much. I am obsessed with the Derek Lam 10 Crosby
Ruffle Sleeve Top, however, it is a bit out of my price range. Any suggestions for something similar?

I am in the process of interviewing for a promotion and am looking for a ‘boss lady’ outfit to boost confidence (and hide all of that silly impostor syndrome). :)

    Thanks for the help! xo

  6. Vicki says...

I always know I’ll feel good in a black top & jeans

  7. Kat says...

Loved seeing the inclusion of the plus sized dress – thanks so much, always keen to see new plus sized ranges. Would love to see a post on this too.
    xo

  8. I have always been a t-shirt kind of gal, but turning 30 and being surrounded by stylish Europeans constantly- I’ve decided to reconsider. I’m so glad I saw this post. I love the boatneck top and ruffled shirt!

  9. Sarko says...

where is the shirt the model in the first image is wearing?

  10. Louise says...

I turned 40 this year and really started to reevaluate my wardrobe. One conclusion I came to is that I’m never happy with pants that aren’t black. I’m short and pants that aren’t black tend to stumpify me, regardless of cut and length. So I have five pairs of black pants in various styles.

While I understand where a lot of readers are coming from re:
mini dress and mules (I lived in Massachusetts for a few years), I live in Florida. The temperature is going to be in the mid 80s all week. Its such a rare treat to have some style inspiration in February! ☺ I love this post!

  12. I wear black and white just about every day. It’s easy, sleek, and professional. And I don’t need to worry about things matching because everything does! (#WhiteCabanaStyle on Instagram to see my #ootd posts). Great round-up of black and white goodies here! Love ’em!

  13. I have to be honest, if I had to pick I could! I love everything, it’s so much my style! And black and white is always a good choice and super chic!

I would love a post about affordable dress pants!

  14. Katherine says...

My wardrobe has recently evolved into a collection of black, white, and grays, with navy, hunter/olive green, or pale pink/blush accents. Getting dressed is a breeze because everything matches; I can pull together an outfit quickly and man alive packing has never been easier.

    • Laura C. says...

Same here sister! But I have to say that recently I had a dream where I met a younger me, happy and wearing a hot pink or orange jumper, and I was shocked. I never wear those bright colours but I looked so happy… Now I am questioning my black and white and grey and navy wardrobe, haha.

  15. Jeannie says...

Whoever does the make-up for the models on Shopbob is doing an AWESOME job. I love the ladies’ makeup in those ads!!!! Lol

  16. The flats and silk shirt are really cute! I like these silhouettes, but unfortunately can’t pull off black or white in big amounts, especially in winter when I’m pale — I’m a “soft summer” in my coloring.

(There’s a blog post idea Joanna! Coloring by seasons! I love that stuff. :))

    • Joanna Goddard says...

what a fun idea, ann-marie!! going to look into it. xoxo

    • Katherine says...

I’m an autumn/fall girl myself! When my sister and I were in college, my mom and aunt planned a color challenge day for us, and we had a shirt or sweater in every color imaginable and we each tried them all on to help determine our season. It was so fun and memorable, and remarkable how striking the results were for us. The colors that made me look dead made my aunt come alive! Having this knowledge has made it so much easier to shop for myself and my family.

    • Kaitlin says...

Colour by the seasons and “finding your colour” is such an old school trend! My mom used to have colour swatches in her dresser drawer that she would take shopping with her and make sure they matched her wardrobe and her skin and hair tone. I remember thinking they were the oddest things, and why would anyone wear *that* shade of dusty pink!?

    • Yay! I would love that post, Joanna. I don’t think a lot of ladies these days know about it and it’s really useful!

It’s helped me a lot in realizing what colors work for me and why, and what to steer clear of. I don’t have swatches, but just keep in mind that I will always look best in slightly cool hues with a medium value and soft chroma. I love trying to guess what my friends’ seasons are. :)

I would love a seasons/colors post, just because it’s fun. I remember the hoopla about *what season* you were, from when I was a girl, couldn’t figure out my own then, and when I look at the above links, I still can’t 😂
I know what colors I look best in, but they never fit one of the categories.

  17. Hannah Joy says...

After working in service for 6 years wearing black head to toe, I made a huge shift away from black clothes for a period of time, because, BLUE! PINK! CHARTREUSE! I felt completely liberated for two years. I have slowly moved back to black because it just looks so darn chic. Though I fired myself from white clothes, due to my superpower of staining everything.

    • Bethany says...

I feel that!!! Because, deep teal the color of the Med!

I have to stick to black on bottom, because it makes me look dead. I stain things too, but I look so fresh and alive in white it’s worth the risk!

  18. Celeste says...

OK! Chenille! I just don’t know if I can accept it back after the 90s. haha but your endorsement is maybe changing my mind?

I actually came here to say that I will vouch for that Everlane silk shirt you linked to in the parenthetical at the bottom. I have it in pale sage and wear it all the time. It’s so breezy and beautiful!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

i actually really really love the texture, haha. i’m embracing it :)

and YES! the everlane silk shirt is fantastic. the shape is so flattering. i have it in black and burgundy. now i want to try the sage!

    • Zoe says...

I have to vouch for chenille. My best friend and I both bought a black chenille sweater from Target (basically that same sweater Jo links to above but way less expensive, I don’t see it online anymore but they might have it in stores still) and both of us are surprisingly way more into it than we expected. Super soft, very comfortable, flattering and BLACK AS NIGHT. The velvety texture makes it look super dark and almost high end? Very random but I consider it a go-to. I wore it almost every single day in December.

  19. Natalie S says...

I’m not sure I can wear those mules in this winter cold! The market tote is v cute and perfect for stashing my gloves and hat xx

  20. Kaitlin says...

I love the bell sleeves – feminine but still modern. I own a big black Lab-Bernese Mountain Dog who never ceases to shed black fur. My trick has been to invest in black bottoms so the fur matches!

  21. Louisa says...

I swear I could have a wardrobe of only Everlane.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      same.

  22. Kristin says...

I’ve always been sad I didn’t get to be a teenager in the 90’s (early 00’s, oof…) but getting to be a 30-something in this 90s revival is SO. MUCH. BETTER.

  23. Lane says...

Holy cow! I had no idea Loft was carrying plus sizes now! I’ve been buying accessories there for years and mooning over the clothes that were only for skinny folks. Thanks for the heads up – that dress is gorgeous. <3

    • Joanna Goddard says...

they just launched!!!! the collection is so good.

  24. Emily says...

So funny. Today on my walk to BART I was thinking that since most of my wardrobe is black or white (or black and white), I should just convert to all black and white to make life simple.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

it would make packing easy :)

  25. Wait, winter? That’s the cold season, right? I cannot even do a 3/4 length sleeve in winter, much less a mini dress and sling-backs… how about some thermal underwear fashions to get us through February!

    • Sarah says...

Haha, I’m with you. I read this post in confusion as NONE of the pieces work for winter where I live. I guess this one was for the Floridians :)

  26. Caitlin says...

OH and another thing, that red lipstick that all the Zara models wear online…. I need info. I even messaged a Zara employee on LinkedIn (with no luck) and asked a Sephora employee for help matching (bought a makeup forever red, but it’s not quite the same color). It’s the perfect red!

    • Nicole says...

OMG I know!!! I NEED TO KNOW! I’ve been looking for at least a year…it’s the perfect burgundy red with a touch of brown?? Amazing.

  27. Caitlin says...

I just designed a capsule wardrobe of all black, white and gray clothes – I think my brain needs this right now. I am on a no-spending-February and it’s the best thing I’ve done (ok so it’s only been 12.5 days…). It has me not only evaluating my current/future spending, but wanting to totally edit down and simplify my whole wardrobe. I’ve been creating a pinterest board on stuff I get urges to buy this month and it’s helping me notice patterns on what I gravitate towards. I think I tend to randomly spend on bright colors and patterns because they make me happy but it tends to be short-lived. I think black/white/gray has more long-term quality in the wardrobe!

    • Bethany says...

That is a fantastic idea – a board of what you might buy – impulse or otherwise – to build a wardrobe first before you spend!

  28. Charu says...

The best thing about having great black and white basic pieces in your closet is it saves so much of decision fatigue. Don’t have to put to much thought into pairing them to create a great output ..it all comes together well and polished !

    • Charu says...

      Too much*

  29. Hannah says...

I’ve been loving black and white this season as well – paired with Glossiers sheer matte lipstick in Zip pulls it all together! https://www.glossier.com/products/generation-g

PS: I just love Everlane. They are hurting my bank account.

  30. Melanie says...

Over the weekend looking through my closet, I noticed that my wardrobe has slowly shifted to black, navy blue, white, and a few bright pieces. Makes life easier and it makes me feel more chic for some reason. And red lipstick always!

  31. Katie says...

Slingback flats and mules in a winter outfit wouldn’t work for me (and I suspect for you too!) but I do like the black and white!

  32. Andrea says...

I increasingly do mostly black, or black and white, for work, with the occasional bright jacket or sweater. Everything matches, relatively easy to shop for, and if I get a hot flash my bright-red face isn’t competing with a brightly colored shirt!

  33. Cheryl says...

Everything is lovely, but not for winter where I live! Short-sleeves, minis, sling-back or mule footwear? Nope, it’s boots and scarves and layers here in Ontario.

  34. Erin says...

I love some black and white. But recently I noticed when I emerge from a depressed state that my wardrobe is all neutrals, my home decor too. It’s kinda overbearing all the grim palettes in my life. So I’m currently trying to force myself into color no matter what. If I see something gray and I like it, I run away! Depression do not follow me!

  35. Lana says...

The piped shirt looks like a pajama top!

  36. Heather says...

Can we believe that chenille is back though? That straight up takes me back to 4th grade. Some of the 90s trends I just can’t handle!

    • Colleen S says...

I have a chenille sweater from Gap. I got it for a ridiculous deal at Christmas, but it sheds like crazy, and wasn’t well made. It was super comfy, but the shedding and threads coming undone is a deal-breaker.
