Have you seen the trailer for Downsizing? Directed by Alexander Payne (Election, Sideways), the comedy stars Kristin Wiig and Matt Damon, who live in a world where people can shrink down to five inches tall as a solution to overpopulation. It looks hilarious and bizarre. But…
Then I read mixed reviews! And Rotten Tomatoes currently gives it a 67 percent. Yet I still want to see it, don’t you? Who knows, maybe we’ll love it?
Cup of Jo editor Megan actually avoids reviews before seeing movies. “I don’t want to have anyone else’s opinion in my mind while watching,” she told me. “I went into Lost in Translation knowing nothing other than that Bill Murray was in it. As I watched, I kept thinking, ‘I love this! This is the best movie I’ve ever seen!’ It feels so good to have those big surprises. I wonder if I would have had such a strong reaction if I had read a bunch of great reviews.” Maybe it’s worth going into the theater with fresh eyes?
Any movies you are looking forward to seeing? Stronger and Lady Bird also look great.
P.S. A new podcast, and the joy of re-watching TV shows.
