I love how real this post it, and how it is okay to find beauty in sadness. The one that struck me the most was definitely “that perfect sad song”. Sometimes it is necessary to play Adele, in the rain, while taking a long drive alone somewhere every once in awhile. Although things can be viewed as ‘sad’, beauty can always be found.
I would like to add the biggest bittersweet thing happening to me – Watching my daughter grow up (She completed 6 just yesterday!). She is growing up to be a beautiful human being, inside and out, but I can still remember her looking up and smiling at me while breastfeeding, like it was yesterday :)
Yay! Another word to add to my vocabulary – Ennui.
Long distance relationships are actually happiest sadness. Nice illustrations.
The happiest sadnesses. Nailed it.
I feel this on road trips during that space when your eyelids are half closed, good music is playing, and you cross over a bridge and you realize you’re almost back home because of the familiar sound of that bridge and that crossing and you’re happy to be almost home however sad that the trip is almost over…
Everywhere else, when I see cartoons like this, they inevitably disappoint me. But I look forward to seeing what Mari Andrew has drawn every week because they hit their target every single time. They are so simple and yet so TRUE and funny. I love them. Never stop!
This is perfect.
So funny – today was all about the sweet and the bittersweet for me. We’re still unpacking from moving house in November, and I _must_ clear out the enormous collection of cards I keep. All either postcards from holidays or Christmas/ birthday and other cards from family and friends. I have so many from my wonderful not-quite-Godfather who died a few years back. But I also looked through notes and photos from college, a card from my mum when I got my first real job… a difficult but lovely afternoon.
Cass, I’m so curious as to what you decided to do with all your notes & letters. I am in the same boat & want to save, but also want to purge.
Fall is coming (yay!) but that also means hurricane season. My prayers are with Texas and Louisiana, where my parents live.
As someone in a long distance relationship with a sweet, smart, hilarious, loving man who lives almost 2,000 miles away, I really, really feel this. Thank you Mari!
The perfect sad song or sad movie on a cold and rainy afternoon can be so right! Beautiful illustrations as always.
Hey Mari, is an empty park in the rain happy/sad for you because the rainy park is so beautiful and there’s no one there to enjoy it, or because the pleasure of having the park all to yourself comes at the expense of a rainy day? I know which one I’d be :)
Your baby getting older. Yay, I’m sleeping through the night! But so sad, no more baby snuggles.
I love happy-sad. I spent some solo time overseas, and I have a specific memory of eating French toast with blueberry syrup in a tiny brunch spot in London, watching a pouring rainstorm out the open window. ‘Hallelujah’ was playing, and I was both so lonely, and so fulfilled. I’m even getting poetic about it haha – it was just such a stunning moment, because it was beautiful and also sad.
I like all of Mari’s illustrations, but I LOVE this one.
How about moving out of a cosy and lovely apartment where you made the most amazing memories into a bigger one where you don’t have any yet?
I’m packing for that move right now and it’s so hard.
How about that feeling when you finish a really amazing, life-changing book? You race to finish and then feel sad when you are done.
Yes!
Less dramatic, but I feel this after every tasty dessert I have…
And dropping your youngest off at college…..
Mari, you speak right to my heart. Thank you darling.
The perfect sad song! I’m 32, recently happily married, and yet the song “23” by The Overcoats about marrying young and having it fail brings me to tears every single time I hear it.
“Hold Me Close” by The Overcoats is one of my favorite songs right now! Their harmonies are so beautiful <3
Um, thanks for introducing me to my favorite band at the moment!!! Love this!!!!
How does she do it? Every. single. time.
