P.S. The people worth impressing, and nightly thoughts.
For me, it was when I noticed the university students my city is teeming with looked so very, very young…all of them, all the time, not just the occasional young-looking one at the bus stop. The shoe dropped the fifth time I said ‘They look so young’ aloud….ah. THEY’VE GOTTEN YOUNGER!
No, no. I aged. I actually pulled ahead out of that university herd, without ever realizing it. I see the tender vulnerability and optimism and sullenness in them and am touched by how very young they are, I was, we were. I am.
For me, having a child was what put the look of an adult in my eyes; that drawn strain from living daily knowing if anything ever happens to the currently wailing child hanging off my leg, I will never be whole again. When I see those young students, that is what they have I lost – ignorance of the vulnerability of life, and love. They don’t know yet, the broken heartedness of true love, it’s all still ahead. I could be 16 or 23 or 43, but deep love is what changed how I look from light youth to…sober?
Haha!!!! Yes! LOL
Sooo true. And weird. I was talking to my husband recently and we were trying to figure out who one of the non-regular teachers at my kids’ school is based on a name.
Me: “she’s older, small frame, . . .”
My husband: “If it’s who I’m thinking of, she’s about the same age as you.” Me: “Oh yeah, she’s probably younger than me.”
(I’m 33. I would definitely call myself old if I was not me and describing myself.)
Oh god this is so true, the age old ‘what am I doing with my life’ question…!
I’m 38 and a doctor, and I LOVE that this is part of the stereotype for doctors now – “My doctor is a young (ish!) woman, the same age as I am!” With the intensive training programs all doctors complete (7-11 years AFTER college), the youngest board-certified doctor you’ll ever see will be 29 or 30. It’s so exciting to be part of a generation realizing, “Oh, of course, THIS is what a doctor looks like.”
My oldest brother has commented on this before, usually while watching sports. It’s one of the reasons he rooted for the Pats to win the Super Bowl this year, since Tom Brady is “old” like him but still in great shape! He’s also talked to me before about an article he read that said men, no matter their age, always say that their perception of Batman is that the comic book hero is always perceived as older than the man surveyed. Age is so weird.
This is so spot on! Love it.
I’m only 25 (and a mom of three), but I’m starting to get glimpses of this on a smaller scale. Like a few people have said, I think the weirdest is realizing people you admire are younger than you (like all the Olympic gymnasts!). At the same time, I’ve always wanted to be around people older than me, and here in NYC I’m obviously a very young mom and the majority of my friends at mom’s group and in my neighborhood are 10-15 years older than me. It feels normal though, and I don’t feel any younger until references to years or pop culture come up. All of this has made me a TERRIBLE judge of ages….’they’re my best friend, so how could they be almost 40?!’ But they are, and it’s fine.
So true!
I’m 33 and now my knees hurt a bit after playing tennis… it makes me feel so old! Ah well, at least we learn how to relax a little more as we get older.
Ahahahaha I’m going through this on the regular.
Ha! Yes! Or younger!
This genuinely happened with my doctor today at my annual physical! New town, new doc, but she’s awesome.
Ugh. Since turning 30 I notice this constantly. The other day I watched an episode of Friends and realised I’m 4 years older than Monica in season one. Say what?1
If you want to feel extra inadequate ;-) http://supbowie.com/
Oh man or when you see people who are still in high school/university and sooo successful with genius business ideas, on instagram, or Olympians.. and I feel like I’m just herp derping around heeheh
What a perfect picture to show that we all see it differently! I find it hard and try to practice staying in the moment as it all changes so fast. Having your doc be younger then you must be a crazy experience. I also remember giving social worker advice to clients at the age of 25.
Haha! YES!
Actually what’s weird is when they are younger!
Oh my God how accurate!!
I’m 32, living in a big city with my boyfriend and a dog. My mom sometimes drives me nuts always asking what I’m doing, where I am, when I am going home, am I safe, etc. I have to remind her that when she was my age she had three children already. “What if Grandma was calling and asking you all these questions when you were at home raising three children? It would be weird!” It’s a funny reminder to her (and me) of my age.
Haha.. so true!!
Yes! I am 47 and my (public) company’s CEO is one year older, and there are executives in the C-Suite that are younger than I am. Not that I would want to switch roles, but … it’s a weird realization to be one of the “older” folks. On the other hand, getting older is denied to many, and I always have that in the back of my mind, being a cancer survivor.
I’m so so happy for you Alexandra!
LOL that’s cute. And yea… i’m 32 and recently went to the dentist and he looked like a kid… :/

I’m a 28 year old dentist and I can’t make it through 2 patients without getting a “what are you, twelve years old??” comment. I still haven’t come up with a non-awkward reply.
Sarah (the 28 year old dentist below) – what about ‘would you prefer someone more jaded?’ Said with or without a smile, depending on how kindly they spoke to you xxx
Yes! I was just thinking about the doctor piece the other day – I’m now 33 and, in some cases, my doctor is YOUNGER than me. That really makes me feel old!
Replying to myself. Clearly I should have read the earlier comments first because it sounds like a lot of folks are right there with me :-)
It hit me when Jennifer Lawrence won her Oscar. And I’m only 27…. It’s almost a “what am I doing with my life” kind of situation. Ha!
UGH I had that same thought. She and I were born same day, same year. Made me feel a liiiiiiiiittle inadequate.
Ha! I h ad that feeling when Obama got elected!
I just about die thinking that in June, I’ll have graduated from high school TWENTY YEARS ago. Cripes!
I’m at 14 years this June. It’s so amazing to me how it just doesn’t feel like it’s been that long. I don’t feel old enough to have been out of school for 14 years!!
Ha! Carrie! That sounded like a pretty long time till I did the math and realized I’m right there with you! ;)
Hahaha. I had exactly the same thing as Amanda June!
