Spring Trend: Woven Pieces

This spring, we’ve noticed a wide new assortment of beautiful woven pieces to wear or use at home. Some are made of rattan, the natural fiber that was popular in midcentury design (like Franco Albini’s classic rattan ottoman, designed in 1951), and some are seagrass, wicker or even brass — with a look that feels fresh and pretty. I’m loving those sandals! They look classy, but beachy, and effortless, all at once. Joanna, as a broke college student, I’m wondering if you could do a series on shoes under $50-$75 for poor souls like me? Or really anything cheap but not lacking in quality. I realize that that is what we’re all looking for, but this is my cry of desperation. Thanks!

I lived in my Huaraches as a kid. Though I think I paid around $10 at CostPlus. :) Miss those days. Love that they are making a comeback!

I’ve been pining over the woven bags that every French person brings to the market. So practical and beautiful!

A few months ago, I snagged a vintage woven tote bag from the Goodwill Outlet. If I paid a quarter for it, I’d be surprised. I thought it was very cool but, now it appears that I am just “trendy”. ;)

I love wicker bags! They always look beautiful. I buy a new one every year, but there is one favorite, it was bought by my grandmother, but it still looks fashionable :)

Nope, not my cup of tea. I could handle maybe one or two pieces in the interior (basket, chair or a pendant lamp), but those interior shots with whole lot of this stuff give me heebie jeebies, probably because to me they look like dust gatherers, just like all those wall hangings. I will skip this and wait for the next trend.

I bought a pair of handmade huarache sandals in Mexico from a local craftsman in the town I was staying. They are so comfortable! My favorite feature is that the sole is cut from old tires. They even say Firestone on the bottom haha

I love this look. It’s a very timeless trend. Living in Bali we see a lot of woven furniture – it ages gently and attractively, and adds a touch of warmth to interiors. Très chic!

Love all of this! I’ve been a basket carrier from way back (my fav is my Mom’s straw roll bag with shells) and we have a 1950’s bamboo club chair that has lovely clean lines, but still manages to give a little sass to our modern pieces :-)

We spend our summers in the south of France and one of my favorite styles there is the woven sandals! I’ve noticed that local women rarely show their toes, even in such a warm climate, so shoes like that are incredible common. So cute and chic! I also love love love straw hats! SO fun and practical.

I’m so glad this is a ‘style’ so I don’t have to be the crazy wicker / rattan lady anymore. I’ve always loved it – chairs, a large vintage wicker elephant, an oversized wicker African gourd… – my apartment (and life) are peppered with my love of this texture already.
