I LOVE this!
LOVE Mari! <3
I love these illustrations each week! Thanks for adding this :-)
So much love for this. I’m going through some rough things at work, and yesterday my husband commented that I was much more calm than I would have been a year ago under the same circumstances. I think that’s because the last 12 months have been so difficult, and I’ve grown because of it.
My darkest moment ended up being my greatest gift. All in one summer: Dumped by my long-term partner + health scare + parents separated + grad school … I could only go day by day and owe my mother a life time of gratitude for always picking up the phone in the middle of the night. Overcoming made me into the person I am today– tough as nails and more empathy than I know what to do with.
Does growth always come from adversity? I think fellow commenter Allison is on the right track. I would add support, introspection, and even teeny, tiny personal successes.
Great words, perfect timing! (:
Wauw, these words came at a great timing, thank you (:
Aww I love this little illustration so much, thanks for sharing! 2016 was definitely a big year of all of these for me- I don’t doubt this year will be the same. I think it’s important to continue to remind ourselves that ultimately all of these are to help us grow! :)
Yes, so true. It is the challenges that test us, and make us seek and try. Those are the pathways to growth. Often I wish this weren’t the case, but better to embrace this true, and let it be a comfort as I walk through the valleys.
Growth is what life offer us in exchange for its harshness )
Always love these illustrations.
Happy Friday! :)

I always like the posts on career development from a female perspective.
Thanks for introducing us to Mari Andrew! I always look forward to these posts.
A must for me in Paris is L’Avant Comptoir. It’s hidden behind an unassuming crepe stand. You won’t be disappointed.
But also: Love, Encouragement, Curiosity.

hi joanna!
i was really in need of remembering that everything sad and terrifying has a way of making us grow. i’m going through a tough time where love is concerned and have been feeling so lost these days! i’m super optimistic and upbeat in general (my friends even say i am the incarnation of poppy, the happy-go-lucky pink troll :)) but these last few days i’ve just been a gray and lonely version of myself. i think we need to feel things deeply in order to move on, but it’s very tough to do it. so thank you for reminding me that at least it’ll make me grow and that there’s always a rainbow somewhere along the road!

I love this!!
I would say as a writer who’s always submitting to different places for article publishing, rejection makes me grow a lot. Well, first there’s a lot of tears, and an earlier bedtime for my kids so that I can have more time to sulk and watch a movie and drink wine. But after that….. I’m able to learn from the experience…. and accept that my self-worth is not based on these kinds of things. At least I’m pretty sure it’s not
I just love Mari Andrew’s clever artistry! And all of these ways of growth, align with being vulnerable and being our own personal truth seekers and tellers. Never easy, but always worth it in the long run. xx
I agree, everything makes you grow and that’s why I am trying to embrace that and work with and through life. But, the good times make us grow as well I think and we should not forget about that. Sure we all have battle wounds that bring us forward but we also have accomplishments and they are just as important!
I would love a coffee table collection of Mari’s works. Is anything like that in the cards?
I was thinking the same, but a wall calendar! Do it, Mari! :)
This illustration is so true. The challenges in my life have also made me a stronger person.
This illustration is absolutely true.
There’s a Samuel Beckett quote that has become my motto – “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better.”
Every time I get a publication rejection, a job rejection, a series of harsh criticisms on my work, I just remember that.
I love that, Clare. Thank you for sharing.
I was so touched by this illustration. I have been confronting my mental health issues for the past 6 months – ones that I had been ignoring for so long. I have learned now to confront the scariest things, and how they can help me to become stronger and more self-aware than ever. Thank you for sharing.
So brave and honest of you Jodie. I commend you for taking these bold, baby steps. I’ve found that by confronting my own, they don’t seem to be as powerful and scary as I once thought them to be. xx
I think this is true, but you have to also love yourself to learn and grow from those hard things.
I agree. Each of these conduits of growth take a person to pith of herself and it is there and only there that the tiny spark that never goes out can be seen, or the tiny warrior woman you didn’t know lives in you emerges, or that you discover that even if you have lost all strength or will, others are happy to lend their strength and will until you find yours.
Heartbreak! Though it was horrible, that really changed my life! Suddenly I felt like – the worst has happened, nothing can be as bad -applyed for a “totally out of my reach” job (got it), travelled, and most importantly, looked at myself – what did not feel good in that relationship, who am I, what do I need, what makes me happy. It was an amazing journey and I am stronger, braver and happier now – but I have to admit, scared of the next heartbreak.
love this! it reminds me of a great song by The Oh Hellos that always gives me comfort when I’m down, as hard as it is to find the truth in it sometimes.
” And the sun, it does not cause us to grow
It is the rain that will strengthen your soul”
