What are you up to this weekend? We’re going to Paowalla for dinner, and I’ve heard great things about their Indian food and fresh breads. We also got our Christmas tree and it’s so cozy to have those lights in our living room! I wish we could keep it up year round. To echo everyone else: Between the World and Me is so impactful. T-Nehisi Coates also published a new Black Panther comic book series, Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet, in September. It’s supposed to merge the social justice mindedness of his other writing with the Black Panther storyline. Just ordered it for my husband’s birthday!

All these links are so great. The museum tour is hilarious and I loved the one on debt. I love that this blog represents such diversity. I fall somewhere between the girl with credit card debt and being able to afford most of your gift recommendations;), but I really benefit from both perspectives.

Thanks for all the great links! Coates just spoke at my alma mater last month (Temple University) and I heard his talk was wonderful. I second everyone else’s suggestion that people listen to the audio book!

Yes to The Laundress products! Their Wash & Stain Bar is also fantastic – I’ve used it on several light-colored dresses and shirts to pre-treat underarm stains, and it works like a charm. Highly recommended :)

Hi Jo!

I used the song technique with my 5th and 6th grade students to signify cleanup. They loved it and returned quickly to their seats to dance quietly until it ended!

Also, Between the World is really beautiful on Audible and great for e commute!

For financial therapy, I highly recommend Bari Tessler Linden’s The Art of Money. There is so much shame around money and debt and Bari is the best for actually honoring these deep emotions, which is the only way to truly changing your mindset around money. (I have credit card and student loan debt so I totally get the shame and fear.)

I really recommend listening to the audiobook of Between the World and Me. It’s read by the author and at times feels like poetry. You really get to hear his voice and tone.

just on the phone w/ my dad and he had a great suggestion — he said he and my mom leave their tree out on their balcony after xmas is over until april! if you have outside space that’ll fit your tree, it’ll look great when the snow comes. no lights or ornaments obviously. going to try that this year. the needles stay on in the cold. forest balcony in brooklyn!

Please let us know how Paowalla was! I really wanted to take out of town guests, but then I heard not very good reviews from friends of mine who went. So I just took the guests elsewhere because I didn’t want to risk taking them to a bad meal when they were in town for such a short time, but I’m still willing to give it a whirl myself sometime.

hi cara! i came to report back: paowalla was DELICIOUS. i really loved the food. we shared a bunch of things with our friends, and the entrees we tried were especially great — the lamb fell off the bone, and chicken tikka had a really delicious almost lemon-y marinade. also, to start, we had the shishito pakora, where shishito peppers were fried in a crust of ground chickpeas. SO good. the ambiance was okay — not totally bustling or magical feeling, but maybe that’s because we had a 6pm reservation! (#nerds) bottom line: i’d totally recommend it, maybe just go more like 8pm. xoxo

I did research on a subgroup of nonagenarians and centenarians on the island of Crete, Greece, before med school. It probably helped that many of them walked and exercised daily for work and had a diet cooked in olive oil and heavier in greens, pulses and non-red meats, but my own great grandfather (who lived to 106) had his own little tricks as well. He would “always leave the table a little hungry,” and every day had a shot of what he called his “poison:” effectively Cretan moonshine from the village he grew up in. :)

That’s nice! My grandfather died five years ago at 100, and he always took a Chamomile tea every night before going to sleep. I am pretty sure the trick is there!

“Between the World and Me” is one of the most eye-opening books I have ever read. Pair it with Claudia Rankine’s “Citizen,” if you haven’t already read that.

Yes, sweater stones work! You gotta do it in this…particular repeated short motion. Like brusquely brushing a dog?? lol be gentle on the delicate fiber stuff (cashmere, merino wool), but have at it with regular ole wool sweaters :)

I was just going to vouch for this item, which was recommended to me by a salesperson at Nordstrom. It works better than a mechanical pill shaver. It’s rough textured kind of like a lava stone. Like Jeannie said, you brush it in one direction in short strokes over the pills. The rough texture gathers the pills and pulls them off. I have several sweaters that I love but pill horribly. I would have to throw them away except for this little wonder.

I just bought a sweater stone (six bucks on amazon) and it worked so well that a sweater destined for Goodwill is now back in my work rotation. So far I’ve used mine on cotton/merino blend and cashmere with great success.
