I enjoyed Amanda Peet’s article, but I disagree with her assertion that we will all “end up looking like shit.” My mother is a beautiful 92. She has never dyed her hair, used miracle potions for her skin, or bleached her teeth. Mom has fine wrinkles etched all over her face, and she still has fabulous legs. I pray I’ll be as beautiful as my mom if I am lucky enough to make it to 93.

Agreed! I liked the article but I also stumbled over the statement you quoted and think it’s sad she feels that way. My mother was beautiful her whole life, I feel more beautiful now in my mid-thirties than I did ten years ago and I hope I will continue to feel that way in the next few decades. Just look at Jo’s mom, she’s stunning! xx

I also don’t have the ability to form lasting mental images. I discovered it for the first time when I was ten, and it really gets in the way of recognizing people and following the plot of movies (especially if several of the characters look vaguely similar).

The mind’s eye piece was so interesting! I have some form of this, where I can visualize if I really try, but I’m way more comfortable thinking in words and concepts. When I think about a person, their name enters my thoughts, not a picture of them. As a result, I’m really good with remembering names!

I just freshened up my haircut yesterday and feel so new! I feel like small adjustments to my go to style always feel the best. You know what makes you feel best, but adding in some subtle layers, or changing the part or getting some highlights go a long way to help me get out of a “rut” when I start to feel drab.

Loved the Amanda Peet article and the 12 kinds of kindness. Where we live in sleepy SW France there are often elderly people sitting on their doorsteps. In our village there is an elderly gentleman who stands outside smoking his cigarette, we stared at each other for months, then one day I smiled and he smiled back, we formed a silent sort of friendship and now whenever I pass we always smile and wave at each other – it’s a simple act of kindness that goes a long way.

I am barely in my 30s and had Botox. Why? Not for any reason that is cosmetic. But it is actually used in helping people recover from Bell’s Palsy. It has made a remarkable difference (for the better) in helping me regain my smile. I haven’t been able to smile or use the left side of my face normally since the day before my son was born 28 months ago. It is really hard. Your Friday links make each of my Fridays that much brighter :) I really enjoyed the article about the personal finances. I am about to turn 30 and have $0 debt, a ‘decent’ income and I do budget very well with savings/retirement always in mind, but I still feel as if I have not done enough for my age. My fiancee made a good point recently which was how the ‘American Dream’ seems to have shifted so much as of late- there is more pressure to make $1M before 30, or have ‘something’ to show by 30 where as 20-40 years ago the focus of the American Dream was more aligned with building a family and having people to revel in your success with you….either way, reading this article and each of those men’s takes on life and finances was comforting to me, we are all doing our best and thats the best we can do! This is so interesting! I’m 34 and have only recently started making a decent income. Also I’m single, so on one income, paying off my college debt and buying a home are still way off in the future! My perception of the American Dream definitely has no notion of $1M by any age, ha! I guess we are all influenced by what we see around us, but just another perspective to offer that from where I sit, you sound like you are doing pretty great!

Those painted rocks are beautiful, but they are making me laugh. When I was a kid my best friend and I painted designs on rocks and sold them for 25 cents outside her parents’ garden store. I guess we were ahead of the times!

On a more serious note, the Four Men, Four Numbers article was really interesting. Income disparity is something I think about all the time. It’s inconceivable to me that we all just blindly accept that some people should have so much while so many go without. It’s getting more and more out of control and I truly believe it is one of the most significant issues facing our society today. It was kind of sad to me that both of the “wealthy” men interviewed seemed so preoccupied with money and making more of it rather than being thankful for what they have. I also wonder how things would be different if they had interviewed four women instead of four men?

Hmm.. I donated my spoon rest as I hardly used it. I always rest the spoons on the cutting board lol!

The esquire article on 4 guys is truly fascinating. My takeaway was that the “successful” guys want to keep working without retirement while the poor ones are all planning to retire. I see this as being passionate & enjoying their line of work and not necessarily greed!

I see your point, I just think about how much they’re paying those working for them…all the way down the line. Like $180 to the cleaning lady; that said a lot right there, but what do they pay the people they interact with? Like the last guy could have served them a drink! And he gets $7/hr plus tips. Isn’t his time worth as much as theirs? And couldn’t he be as passionate about his job?

I loved the Esquire article and definitely saw myself in it. Everyone thinks that to be really happy they need to make as much as the guy above them.

I always thought that was ridiculous, and now I’m guilty of thinking that too. If only I made an extra 50k a year, I wouldn’t need anything else! Ha.

Four Men, Four Numbers reminded me of an article in the New York Times Magazine from I think the 90’s (!). It tracked the daily spending habits of a very rich man and a very poor man (like #1 and #4 from this article) for one week. The rich man had bills from Canyon Ranch, salaries for his housekeeper and driver, and at least 3 fancy dinners out. The poor man bought only a meager amount of food (a loaf of bread, balogna, coffee) and cigarettes. It was utterly fascinating to me and, as you can tell, I never forgot it.

One of my friends just told me last week that she didn’t have a mind’s eye. I had never heard of this before – so crazy!

I love Amanda Peet’s essay. So charming and funny. And yes, I have never seen a person who had any type of enhancement that wasn’t noticeable. In a not so good, can’t look away, type of noticeable. For the Love of Boys (I think its called) addresses how boys turn anything into weapons without any introduction to weapons at home -so fascinating and isn’t the ingenuity what made McGyver oh so sexy? I don’t know about that sandwich, I hate grilled eggplant. hate. it. have a lovely weekend.

The chips piece reminds me of my daughter’s favorite Girl Scout camping meal – they call them “walking tacos”. You open a bag of Fritos, and then add your favorite taco toppings into the bag, and you can hang out around the campfire, spooning taco salad right out of the bag!

Such a fun way to do dinner with kids too – really, there are so many ways you could serve up dinner in a pouch like this!

That Esquire piece is …. I don’t know which adjective to choose. Interesting? Sad? I think there need to be rich and poor, and that hard word needs to be rewarded, but things have gotten out of proportion. It isn’t right that somebody who works full-time is poor. Maybe not rich, but they shouldn’t be poor. And people in finance who destroyed our economy in 2008 didn’t feel any pain from their bad decisions.

I love Amanda Peet even more after reading her essay. When I was watching Togetherness I remember thinking how glad I was that she hadn’t messed with her face like so many other actresses. I’m about the same age and get the temptation to try to do something to try to reverse the aging process. But I definitely don’t want my son to grow up thinking that aging is something that needs to be “fixed,” especially in women.

I love Amanda Peet’s article! So refreshing to hear someone willing to age gracefully. I cringe when I see these actresses who look nothing like a real person, skin pulled and lips motionless, it’s almost scary sometimes. And the finance article – sort of sad. It seems like no amount of money is enough for some people…….. We’ve become a greedy society.

That Amanda Peet article is fantastic. And shame on Hollywood for not creating more roles for women over 30. I just finished watching Catastrophe starring Sharon Horgan who is 45 and not only is she naturally gorgeous but her character in the show represents a generation of women that we don’t see a whole lot of on television or in the movies. Women who are aging gracefully and who are still cool and funny and smart and beautiful and have stories worth telling. More of that, please, Hollywood!
