How Did You Meet Your Significant Other?

If you’re in a relationship, how did you meet your significant other? Here’s our story from six years ago…

One cold February night, my friends hosted a small party to watch the Academy Awards. I got there early and was relaxing on the sofa, eating my weight in guacamole and analyzing red carpet dresses. (Reese Witherspoon was a big hit that year.) There were a handful of people at the party, when all of a sudden, a handsome bespectacled guy walked in. He was completely my type, and I knew I wanted him to sit by me, so I curled up on the sofa so no one would take the spot. Finally, after mixing cocktails for what seemed like hours, he headed over to find a seat. I sat up straight again and was like, “Oh, you can sit here, if you want.” To my enormous pleasure, he did! Our first conversation was about how he had painted his apartment that weekend; and at one point, our knees brushed, which made my heart race. At the end of the party, we said goodbye and I gave him a lingering glance, which I hoped conveyed how smitten I already was.

(What happened next? He was a wuss so I had to ask him out to dinner!)

How did you meet your significant other? Anyone meet through online dating? (Tons of my friends have.) I’d love to hear…

P.S. Do you stay friends with your exes? And do you ever worry that you won’t meet your soulmate?

I just stumbled upon this post in such a timely moment! I feel like I am in a similar predicament of having to ask a guy on a date (who happens to be older, too) and I would love to know how you did it!

    xo.

  2. Alexandra Mendoza says...

I met my boyfriend the day he quit, but that’s not really how we started dating. We worked for the same company and never saw each other until the day he was coming back from quitting we happened to bumped into each other and started making conversation, none of us had our phone with us so he had to memorize my phone number. A month later we were dating but unfortunately It wasn’t our time, he was still trying to work things out with his baby mama therefore he ghosted me out, that was back in march. Months passed and in October he try to contact me, he was persistent up until January until I told him I didn’t think this was going to work anymore. last message I got from him was on January 2016 saying was I hope we meet in the future and make you like me again.

The day of my birthday May 23 2016 I happened to be called in to my new job as a receptionist, and surprise surprise I see him coming in, he was working at his new job delivering equipment. That same day I heard from him and the message said it was nice to see you again. From there we hit it off and now we been dating for a couple of months. Things happen for a reason. Funny fact is that we both worked too far from our house and we lived 5 miles apart from each other.

  3. i asked him if he could get me tickets and he said no, because he didn’t go to that school. lol. we just would talk at work and i didn’t think much of it but then we went to a company bowling night.. I invited him to the pub with my friends and we had our first kiss at midnight. We saw each other a couple more times before he went back to Australia. Then there was a painful 5 months of skyping and Facebook messaging before he came back to visit for a month in June 2011. We then realised that we really loved each other

  4. We met at the bus stop.

He always tells it so much better than i do. Truthfully i only remember fragments i was so jittery. It was dark i’d just finished a late shift at the hospital. He’d had after work drinks round the corner and got held up. Mostly i remember his smile. It was/is beautiful. Then we talked so much we missed two buses, a train and he got told by the security guard that he could escort me to the train door. haha he loves that after exchanging numbers i went to handshake good bye… he went in for a hug.

I phoned my mum on that train ride home to tell her i’d met THE guy. i couldn’t stop smiling and wanted to talk to him more so we skyped when we got home.
We skyped for a week, every night.
    and the rest is history.

  5. We met while I was backpacking in Argentina. I went back home in Spain and after 15 months i moved to Buenos Aires with him! Where I am at the moment ;)

  7. It’s kind of a long story.. I was in high school and wanting to sign up for a psychology class at the local community college. The only one they had left was biological psychology which was the one I was least interested in, and the only lab they had left was Monday nights which I also didn’t like, but I signed up anyway. We had a ten minute break between class and lab, and when I came back for lab a guy who was definitely not there before was in the seat next to me. He had spotted me during class and wanted to be my lab partner, we ended up becoming friends even though I was dating someone else. Eventually my current boyfriend and I broke up (we were together like three months) and the one I wanted to talk to about it was lab guy, and a few weeks later we went on three dates over spring break, and he asked me out while star gazing. He was too nervous to kiss me so I had to do it ;) Still together, over six years later. Oh, and that same biological psychology led me to choose to become a neurologist. Win-win!

  8. got a phone call from a girl named Love. She insisted that I go on a group camp out, that she would be there by midnight. I hardly knew this lady (never went out with her and only spoke to her once at a restaurant with friends of friends), but I finally gave in and went. She never showed up, but, instead, I met my wife of 32 years now. It was some sort of a mystical event?

  9. The summer before my sophomore year of high school, a friend of mine and I decided to take a leisurely stroll down some train tracks that ran by a local park. A while into our little adventure we came across two guys; one photographing another with a guitar. The boy holding the camera caught my gaze and held on to it for the duration of our passing and quietly muffled “hey.” I smiled back to him and kept walking. Later I learned that he immediately turned to his friend and said “Im going to marry that girl” to which his reply, naturally as a 16 yr old boy, was “what…”
Now we’ve been dating for 4 years, go to the same college, and have plans to marry shortly after we graduate :]
his mom wont let him live it down that the night he saw me he came home and told his whole family that he had a girlfriend, she just didn’t know it yet.
hes the light in my life and the saying “love at first sight” is as true as love its self
    :]

  10. We met while I was backpacking Argentina back in 2011!! I returned to my hometown, Madrid, to find that we couldnt really live without each other so that summer fling became real love and I moved to Buenos Aires a year ago now!! :) I love how crazy life can get sometimes.

  11. I met my boyfriend when I was doing a year abroad in the south of France! I was working in a pub the first time we met (I don’t actually remember seeing him, but he remembers it clear as day) and I was serving him and his friends. He tells me now that he was attracted to me the moment he saw me but had a girlfriend at the time so he never made a move. About 7 months later, he had recently broken up with his ex and come to the pub with some friends for a few drinks. I hadn’t seen him all night, but right before we were closing he came over to the bar and asked how he could get a job there (he already had a full time job but saw it as a conversation starter, sneaky). As soon as I opened my mouth he could already hear my accent (I’m from Canada).

I eventually gave him my number and we went on a few dates. I didn’t want anything serious because I was going back home in a few weeks and leaving want to make leaving my new life in France any harder than it already was. We had only been seeing eachother for a few weeks when he told me he was falling in love with me. I’m not going to lie, it kind of freaked me out a bit, but I continued to see him anyway because I figured that since I was leaving soon, it wouldn’t be an issue after.

It wasn’t till about a week before my departure date that I was hanging out with a friend and suddenly was overwhelmed with the thought of leaving him! I started crying and sent him a text saying that I loved him too… We are approaching our one year of making ourselves “official” and I couldn’t be happier! Long distance is very VERY hard, but he plans on moving here when he’s done his studies (in a year and a half) while I finishing my nursing degree. I’m hoping to one day live in the beautiful south of France with the man of my dreams!

  12. As always, I am late to the party with this one…we met at a bookstore. We were both at the new release table and he started talking to me…after a while he asked for my number and I wouldn’t give it to him (had just gotten out of a relationship and was wary of strangers), but he gave me his card. I e-mailed him a week or so later.

  13. I love reading these stories!

I met my husband two weeks before we graduated from college. We had many mutual friends, but I had only met him once before a few months prior. I was interested then, but didn’t talk to him that night. We ended up in the same Mexican Restaurant on Cinco De Mayo and I told a couple of good friends that I wanted to talk with him so they made that happen by sitting at the same table as him!

We talked until we were the last people in the place and he then walked me home at 2:30am and gave me a kiss. I think we both knew from the beginning that we had found someone special.

  14. I met my fiancee playing ultimate frisbee in the park! It was my second time to ever throw a firsbee and he was kind enough to not only give me some pointers, but he was the only boy to pass to me until my skills set in :) We still play twice a week at the same spot to this day!

  15. Its being a year since I meet my boyfriend. I am from Spain and I was studing a year on Dublin (Ireland). One of my best friends there is from Sweeden and she was in Dublin because of her irish boyfriend. One day she wanted me to go out with her and her boyfriend and her boyfriend friends (she didn’t want to be alone with all the boys) I was actually waiting to hear from another guy (he never rang)… So I wasn’t expecting anything. But he was so nice and friendly, not a Brad Pitt, but so atractive. We start talking about football (soccer). He said Barcelo team, was better than Real Madrid (I am from Madrid), but finally he change his opinion and we kiss…

He took, 16 day to write to me! He thought the age diference could be a problem (I was 21 and he was 28). But after 20 day we met up and we fall in love. Can you belive he shed a pint on me in our first date?!

Now we are on a distance relation (I had to come back to Madrid until this summer to finish my degree). We are very lucky and we see each other, more-less a week every month. And we will moving together, as soon I finish my degree and I get back to Dublin :)

He is the one for me

  16. I’m yet to meet him. Or not. I may be a forever-alone-cat-lady but who knows.
Made me tingly and happy reading this, though omg

  17. We met on the ski lift at Vail. He was behind me in the singles line for the first chair at 8am. He started talking to me on the lift (his opening line was, “Did you read the Vail Daily?”)and we ended up skiing together all day long non-stop. And we’re now just about one month away from celebrating our first year anniversary from the day we met!

  18. Arranged.. my mom was friends with his aunt.. we met with family once hardly exchanged words, we went out on one date and we were engaged..
and after a three year long distance drama filled engagement we were married.. going five years strong :)

  19. We meet on Myspace. He was a friend of a friend, and on Valentines Day he commented on a picture of mine. We spoke online and via text for the next five months. Until I suggested a coffee, seemed silly we spoke every day, several times a day, lived in the same city, but had never actually meet.

The very moment I saw him in person I knew I was in love. Justin says he was in love with me before we meet, but never asked me out as he didn’t think I would because of the age difference. (I am 15 years older) We went on our first date the very next night, after the coffee meeting, and have now been together for six years. Plus we have an amazing 13 month old baby together.

  20. Facebook. Well, kind of. We had so many mutual friends, I was sure I would run into him in person sooner or later – and in that same week that’s exactly what happened. I was personally introduced to Mike at a show at TT the Bears in Boston. His show. I’m usually quite adverse to dating anyone in a band, so it didn’t go much further than that. A few months and denied dinner dates passed, until I finally gave in. At that point I hadn’t dated in, god only knows how long, so why not? We met up for coffee and I placed my judgments aside. We ended up sharing great conversation, so great that I agreed to meet up with him later that evening with a few of our mutual friends. I kept thinking, how could I have brushed off this handsome, polite, talented and chivalrous man? Two days later we met up a third time. We walked around Davis Square, searching for a good bite. We stumbled upon a great spot and immediately got seated, ordered craft beers and foodie food and carried on the most amazing conversation. I was in love with him. Right then, right there. I didn’t want the night to end. And really, it hasn’t yet – we’ve been together ever since. It will be a year at the end of the month!

  21. A mutual friend wanted to introduce me to my husband, but somehow the timing to meet was never right ( either me or him was so busy with work) and I think our friend kinda frustrated :D. Somehow my husband message me on facebook and we exchange blackberry PIN number. After several BBM chats we finally met for dinner in a Korean Restaurant ( which now become our fave place )

After few dates and finally we kissed, we took to the serious relationship road.
Only 3 months we dated, he asked me to marry him and before you know time flies so fast we met each other families and planned a wedding . Now we’re being happily married :)

  22. I met mine at my previous job. He was my first boss at the job. He always liked me but didn’t do anything since he was my boss. I started working for our general manager after 5 months, but he still thought it was inappropriate to ask me out. We went to Hawaii together on a company trip–I liked him the whole time, but still nothing. I couldn’t make a move either because I knew I was moving to another country in a few months and thought, “what’s the point?”
A few nights before my departure to Canada (we were living in Japan), he came to my apartment to help me pack. Before he left my apartment, I hugged him and finally told him how I felt. I didn’t plan to, it just came out! He then told me how much he loved me. We couldn’t let each other go. We’re in the second year of our long-distance. After a couple of plane tickets, love letters, and care packages later, we have planned to start living together next Spring :)
I loved reading that so many of you are now happily married after a couple of years of long-distance. It’s definitely encouraging!

  23. Crying over some of these stories. Wonderful post.

  24. I met my boyfriend almost 10 years ago my 2nd term in college. I liked him the minute i met him. He went to France the next week and brought me a small token which i thought was his way of telling me he liked me. But he brought another girl a gift and they dated for 3 years. For the next 8 years we proceeded to be really good friends as we both trudged being in different relationships.

In 2008 we went on a trip to NC together. The trip was very intense and complicated because the girl we were staying with was quite… unstable. The trip ended up bonding us like none other and by the end i stuck a love letter in his suitcase. He wrote one back but life happens and we never dated. I was utterly in love with him. And him me. But it wasn’t our time to date.

In November of 2011, i came to visit him in NY [twice? weird] and had full intention of telling him i couldn’t be his friend anymore. It’s too hard to meet someone when you’re in love with someone else.

Low and behold, he couldn’t handle us not being together and a few months later i left everything i knew to move to NY to be with him. [risky!!!]

It’s the first time in my whole life i feel happy. And completely content. I love him and i know he adores me. We joke about terrible future children’s names and chat about what it will be like to get married one day.

    I’m so blessed.
I couldn’t ask for a more person mate.
It’s a GIFT my heart was so bond and hidden. I was saving it for the right person. I just had a to wait a decade. ;)

    It’s WORTH IT to wait.
    Trust me.

  26. Not met him yet! Hoping for a miracle. It’s always inspiring reading other people’s story. One day mine will be read also.

  27. My husband and I were chemistry lab partners in high school. Our teacher would randomly assign partners using some fancy computer formula :), but we kept getting matched up together. One time, I was out of class for the lab, so he completed his part alone. When I got back, I couldn’t get it to work. He was just sitting at his desk, reading, so I went over to ask him to help me finish my part. He did, and he asked me to go out with him that week. That was 17 years ago.

  28. The first time I saw my husband was in the elevator at work. We work in a hospital so I see so many people in a 12 hour shift. What stood out to me was, he had a foot cast thing on because he had broken his foot! How embarrassing for him! I ended up asking him out to drinks because he wasn’t making the move.

  29. The first time was when I was a sophomore in high school and he was a sophomore in college – I was on the JV basketball team with his sister though neither of us remember that practice he came to help out at. The second time was at an Aerosmith concert when I had just started dating a frat brother of his. I took one look and was smitten. Lucky for me, things didn’t work out with his frat brother (though we are still friends to this day) and neither did things go well for him and his girlfriend at the time. A few months of innocent flirting paid off and we have been together ever since.

  30. my husband and i met at work. my company hired him as an intern (so i figured he was younger than he is). i wanted to go to a show that was for students only so i asked him if he could get me tickets and he said no, because he didn’t go to that school. lol. we just would talk at work and i didn’t think much of it but then we went to a company bowling night (i wasn’t going to go but he said i should) and started flirting. a couple of nights later he invited himself over to my apartment to watch a movie. everything happened from that!

  31. We met in High School, after our homecoming game. He was dating another girl :( Several months later they weren’t dating and we played ultimate frisbee together. He finally plucked up the courage to ask me on a date after graduation, the day before I was leaving on a Hawaiian vacation. We dated all through college long-distance and got engaged and married (in Hawaii!) while he was (is) in dental school. Couldn’t be happier! :)

  32. We met in a bar while on vacation in a Michigan beach town…3rd of July- quick and witty intros and we parted ways. 4th of July we ran into each other again at the same place- watched the fire works and shared tales of how we both wanted to teach, and ADORE Neil Diamond… and then we parted ways again. I tracked him down on the 5th and gave him my number. Although we were living states away- we dated long distance for a few years until I finally moved to Michigan. That was 9.5 years ago, we’ve been married 3.5 years.. and I still can’t believe we met in a bar. :)

  33. gorgeous story, just the kind I’d like to have.

The British (hello that’s me!) didn’t really used to do dating, we just kind of fell together at parties etc and coupled up- the nice dinners etc came once you were coupled- but now the internet is changing that- I still find the internet really hard personally and would love an old fashioned meet cute- but I’m doing the internet thing anyway ;-)

  34. We met at work. We work for few years together before he asked me out, and the rest is history. We share our life for last 12 years and he is my best friend.

  35. My lobster (he’s from Maine) and I met 3 years ago to the day(!) at a bar, we had a mutual friend who had begged me to come out that night to drive her drunken self home, so I showed up and sat down next to a skinny man wearing glasses and had a huge mess of curly brown hair, chatted with him, he asked if I was gonna sing, I said only if they had my song (which they didn’t thank goodness!). I drank my water, forgot what his name was and left with my friend.

2 days later I ran into him at a Mexican place and he asked if I wanted to go to a metal show down the street, but since I had just joined our party I declined. 2 more days later I went to a houseparty with my cousin and ran into him there, he finally asked for my number and texted me that he’ll call me on Sunday to get beers and play pinball, we never went to pinball on that Sunday, but the following day we watched a movie and been attached at the hip since!

2 weeks after we met he told me he loved me, I cried, we kissed and carved our initials into the tree we were standing under. 2 months after we met, we got a dog, she is our baby. 6 months after we met we moved into our first apartment and pressed our hands and paws into wet pavement outside of our home. 2 years, 3 months after we met we closed on our little house in south Seattle. 3 years after we met, I’m waiting for him to come home so I can ask him to marry me, wish me luck!

  36. I met my boyfriend in kind of an unusual way…
He is Australian and I am English. He was over on holiday in England during Christmas 2010. On New Years Eve we both got on the same tube on the London Underground and started chatting. I invited him to the pub with my friends and we had our first kiss at midnight. We saw each other a couple more times before he went back to Australia. Then there was a painful 5 months of skyping and Facebook messaging before he came back to visit for a month in June 2011. We then realised that we really loved each other. And he moved over to England in November 2011. I also visited him in Aus a couple months previously. We’re still together and very happy! I love telling the story of how we met. xx

  37. L. says...

We met on a plane. He was going to belgium to shoot a documentary and I was going home for some days.He was walking in the plane aisle with his big camera and somebody pushed him and he nearly hit me with the camera. That is the first time I saw him. When we landed I sat in the bus that was going to my city and I saw him hesitating on what bus to take. I hoped he would enter mine. When he climbed on my bus I said to myself:” If he sits near me, I’ll talk to him”. He sat…next to me. It’s been more than a year that we are together and we already went back to Belgium but this time together and to introduce him to my family

I also met my husband on match.com over 3 years ago, and now we’ve been married for 7 months. It was “OK to look.” ;-)

  39. Alexis. I just agree… Jeff`s storry is incredible… last wednesday I bought a top of the range Lotus Esprit after I been earnin $8456 this-last/month and-also, 10k this past munth. without a question it is the best job I’ve ever had. I started this 4 months ago and almost straight away got minimum $69, p/h. I use the details on this website…… http://www.BIT40.com

  40. In the hallway outside our Comparative Religions class our freshman year in college. We were both pathologically early and had a nervous, surreal conversation. He needed a pen, I went to dig in my bag and he took the green pen out of my mouth. Then just like that…five years of being friends later…we clicked. Now we’re married and have a house and two dogs and a baby girl!

  41. I went to a nightclub in Hollywood after what seemed years and about 2 am I saw the most beautiful Swiss man alive. I was completely head over heels so my friend went up to him and was like ” let me introduce to my friend”…I apologized for how lame she was haha but he wanted to talk to me. We then talked some and when the club closed I never thought I would see him again. He came up to me outside and asked me to go to a bar so we could keep talking. We went to the Standard hotel in West Hollywood and talked and made out all night.
On April 1st, 2013 it will be our anniversary. I’m convinced he is the love of my life.

  43. I met my boyfriend when I was a junior in high school and he was attending the local community college. He worked at the food services counter in Target and I would often make excuses to buy things from him because he was literally the most beautiful man I ever saw. I often had to wait in line with other girls who thought the same. Well, my best friend got a job at Target, and knowing how much I was crushing on this mystery model-faced man, she set up a movie date with a group of her coworkers and me. I learned that he was so much more than a pretty face behind a counter. I learned he was working his way through college, was actually quite nerdy, and would do anything for his family.

He went on to date some other girl, which was a little disheartening, but it didn’t last long at all. Shortly afterwards we began dating just before my senior year in high school. After I graduated and he finished his community college stint, we moved to the same university together. We have been together 4 ½ years, lived together 3 of those years, and adopted a puppy together last summer. I can’t wait to see where our relationship takes us!

  44. I met my fiance on the subway in Chicago on the way to a White Sox game. I was in town from Dallas for a solo vacation. He moved to Dallas 2 months later!

  45. We are one of MANY couples that I can think of that met while working at Barnes & Noble. He worked in the cafe, I was in books, I went to have a coffee for lunch and I didn’t even have to ask for extra caramel in my macchiato. It was dreamy.

  46. We met at the first Tweetup in Tel Aviv … 5 years ago… and would see each other almost monthly at the local tweetup (which are filled with entrepreneurs and high tech workers). after 4 years, we had our first date. And on that first date I knew he was the kind of married I wanted to marry. We were married 2 days after our one year anniversary.

  47. Love reading everyone’s stories!

We met at college- lived in different dorms but had mutual friends. He saw me hanging out with them one day and thought I was cute, so asked them to introduce us. That was seven years ago, and sparks have been flying ever since!

  48. I met my husband at a college buddy’s house party that he crashed. That night, I was not really in the mood to party, but went anyway. A friend of mine and I went into the pool house ( the party was at a mansion) to get more drinks when my friend chatted up with some random guy sitting on a chair. She had never met him before but introduced me to him. He was cute, funny and very talkative. We all went outside to chat and by the end of the night, I left early. I didn’t really expect anything because I was not looking for love . The next day, he sent me a message on MySpace and said we should hang out as friends. Little did I know he was trying to set me up on blind date with a photographer friend. Instead, I invited him to my friend’s birthday party the next week, where we talked more and felt a connection. Needless to say, he decided to keep me for himself and we’ve been together for almost 6 years.

  49. My best friend was dating his best friend. The first time we met, was during a soccer tournament. I thought he was a jerk, who lived only to show of and he doesn’t even remember I was there.. That was about nine years ago.. We are now five years together (it took him longer to realize we might be awesome together), have a gorgeous daughter and are happily married!

    Great post btw!
    xoxo Nicole

  50. I guess my story is pretty unusual although of course to us it is the norm.

I was on a high school exchange for a year in a small town in Sweden and he became my best friend. We realised there was more at the end of the year. I had to return home to New Zealand a couple of months later but we decided to keep in touch and see how it went (I was only 18 and was nervous to committing to long distance) but 10 months later after skipping nearly every second day he came to New Zealand for two months over Xmas, we had realised by then that this was what we wanted. Five months later I moved to Sweden for a 7 month uni exchange (we lived in different towns, visiting each other every second weekend round about) and the he came to New Zealand for a university exchange for a year. We are now in the process of applying for my residency permit for Sweden, his visa for NZ runs out in March and I will be moving over later on in the year. (The word is meant to be skyping not skipping, my ipad is playing up though so I can’t edit)

  51. I met my love when I was studying abroad for a summer in Prague. We met in a pub (!!) about 10 days before I had to go back to the US, and our connection was instant. We spent everyday together that we could until we had to say goodbye, but we both knew it wasn’t a final goodbye. we spent 2 years apart (with visits every 3-4 months and lots and lots of emails) until I moved to Prague after graduating college. The best part about it is that before I left for my summer in Prague, my dad told me “you’re going to fall in love with someone over there!” and i told him he was absolutely insane and that “never happens”! well, dad was right! :)

  52. I met Sam in London Heathrow Airport. I was going to study abroad in Wales for five months. I knew absolutely no one. Sam was the first Brit I met off the plane! He went to the school I was going to and was there to help pick the internationals up. He carried my bags for me but didn’t talk much. Come to find out after we became official one month later, when he saw me in the airport he whispered to his best friend “she looks like an angel.” His best friend told him to stop being such a girl but..what did he know. I met the love of my life in an airport! Long distance relationships are hard, but it’s definitely worth it.

  53. In Antarctica! He was walking down the hall and was wearing a baseball cap with my college Alma mater on it. I said “are you a Buckeye?” He said “yes i am”. Ends up we’re from the same home town. The rest, we hope, is history!

  54. I went with a friend to a NYE party. I walked in and saw him standing in the dining room and I knew. His version: he didn’t even have to leave his house to meet me, I walked in the front door when they had a party! 5 years and two months later, we’re getting married!

  55. 5 years ago, my boyfriend and I took the same class at the end of freshman year at Wisconsin. But it was a 300+ person lecture and we had different discussion sections, plus we were both dating other people. Right at the end of the semester my brother had his Confirmation and I had to skip my discussion. I chose another section (out of the 20 available – the odds!) and showed up early. I distinctly remember him walking into the room and making a beeline for the seat across the table (he claims it was the pink hair).

Well, our TA brought Starburst for everyone. I made him a bracelet out of the wrappers and he folded an origami crane from one of them and taped it to the bracelet. We each broke up with our significant others that night (which we found out much later)! I switched discussion sections to his (obviously). He was too nervous to ask for my number so he asked if he could “Facebook” me. Then he sent me Dr. Seuss-esque poetry.

I found out last year that he actually kept the bracelet! What a guy! It’s framed in our living room :)

  56. btw, Joanna, you have a crapload of AMAZING readers from all over the world. Lucky you!!!!

  57. Fun and uplifting stories everyone :)

I met my husband at the hospital, which is sadly so Grey’s Anatomy cliched. I was a 4th year medical student, he was an intern. I was in the process of leaving this city and he had just moved here. We met in the ICU but he had a girlfriend at the time. Several months later, when I’d already matched to a residency program thousands of miles away from here, we saw each other at a bar. We went on a date — and I moved in with him on our second date. Ridiculous. Absurd. We went on our first date in March. I dropped out of the residency match because I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him, entered a year of research, and re-matched in this city in a different specialty. We got engaged in August, and married a year later.

A couple years on, two surgical residents are still married to each other and more in love than ever. Odds are against us, but we intend to beat them!

  58. We were flatmates! At that time I had just finished a post-grad course and was working hard on my portfolio, which meant spending most of the day in my pijamas… So I guess it has to be true love when someone can find you attractive when you are eating porridge in your pj’s and messy morning hair. ;)

  59. Our Mothers became best friends when I moved to the area. They both kept pushing me to hang out with him until eventually we started going to coffee together during my senior year of high school. Every time I mentioned him at home my Mom would say something which seemed extremely teasing and embarrassing. One time she said “You’re going to marry that boy”. I was completely aghast and blushed up a storm. 3 years later we’re in love and planning on walking down the aisle in ONE YEAR!

  60. I was an 18 year old Canadian working in an English pub in the south of France after a failed au-pair experience. One night during a calm Sunday evening shift, a guy comes up to the bar and asks me how he can apply for a job there! So I go through the steps with him (applying online, then do an interview, yadda yadda..) when he pauses, then asks me where my accent is from. Obviously I was asked this questions about 10 times a day, so after explaining my story to him, he just looks at me and says (in french, obviously) “I don’t actually need a job here, I just wanted to come over and talk to you.” He asked me for my number and I was a bit skeptical at first, but figured it wouldn’t hurt ( a nice meal with a french man, why not!). We went on a few dates and next thing you know, I am completely head-over heels in love with a French man. He told me he loved me right before I was bound back for Canada. Long distance is very tough at times, but I can’t see myself with anyone else and am hoping to eventually make my life with him in France.

  61. My husband and I met on a plane. He was wearing his AF blues and I was going home from visiting a friend in Texas. Talked the entire plane ride…then found him on a social media page and became long-distance friends for a while. Both in relationships at the time, slowly but surely we broke up with our significant others at the time and started dating.

  62. We met at a bar! We were young, a little crazy and just looking to have fun out with friends. He bought me a drink and the rest is history :)

  63. I was in undergrad and he was in grad school. We lived next door to each other (shared a front porch and a back porch and a wall). We lived next door to each other and exchanged pleasantries for a year and a half. Every time I had to take the dog out I would have to walk past his kitchen window (and he spent a lot of time in the kitchen). One night after going out with my friends I came home to let the dog out and saw him drinking milk STRAIGHT from the jug. I ballsy-ly (?) opened the kitchen door and asked him what was he doing (I’m weird about milk). We ended up watching a bootlegged Smiths’ concert on DVD and the rest is history! We joke that our song is Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now.

  64. Aw I love that you met him at an Academy Awards shindig :-) I met my current boyfriend, G, in high school; he was a sophomore and I was a junior. He was in some advanced classes so we shared some classes together up until I graduated. He was the shyest thing, he friended me on MySpace when we first met in a class (yes, this was awhile ago) without even saying a word to me! I accepted and the next day I sat next to him before class started and said, “Hey! You friended me on MySpace!” He blushed furiously. I was dating someone else in high school, and then again in college, but we remained friends. When he graduated high school he joined the Marines and so we hung out periodically when we both had time, always grabbing brunch at a local diner in our hometown, which holds sentimental value for us now. I went to UCSB my freshmen year and decided to transfer to CSUSB, which is twenty minutes from my hometown, sophomore year. Awhile after I transferred home the guy I had been dating for a year and a half and I decided to break up. It was the hardest break up for me because he was my first love (plus it was messy) and, admittedly, I went a little buckwild for about two years before settling, yet again, into another relationship. That one lasted four months, and it was actually while I was in that relationship that I realized how much I liked G (as awful as it sounds!) G was deploying on his second deployment and we had spent tons of time together and I realized how much I was going to miss him for those 6 months he would be away. So he deployed. I broke up with my last boyfriend. And we wrote letters to each other. Letters upon letters upon letters. When he was lucky enough to use the Internet, we Skyped, occasionally a phone call. He sent me letters enclosed with rose petals he had found around one of the bases that had a few rose bushes. He made me a personalized patch and a bracelet, and even though I was confused about whether or not I was ready to be in another relationship…when he came back, we started going on dates, and then, on November 4th, he asked me to be his girlfriend on my front porch, me sitting on a swinging bench, him on one knee. It was totally nerdy and adorable. We’ve been dating for less than 3 months, but it feels like we’ve been together for so much longer and I feel like hitting young me on the head for taking so long to see what I had in front of me. When I asked him when he started liking me he said, “I was sitting behind you in Mr. Ward’s class and all I saw was the back of your head. I thought to myself, ‘Wow, she’s really cute.’ And then you turned around and I thought, ‘Wow…she’s beautiful.’ And the rest is history.”

  65. My husband and I met in Dublin on a study abroad trip in college. I was dating someone else at the time, but totally had one of those love at first sight moments I never thought I’d have. I felt bad about being in a relationship so I hung in there another few months. By the time we’d broken up he was seeing someone else, I was so disappointed. A couple of months later we ran into each other at a bar and instantly started dating. We got married in November and couldn’t be happier!

  66. eHarmony! I had just moved back to Indianapolis from Chicago. Most of my friends in Indy were married, starting families, etc. I figured why not give it a whirl? It if didn’t work out at least I might have a few good tales about the experience. Mike was my first eHarm date & my last. I have to say…I thought it was a sign when he suggested ordering a bottle of wine, instead of just a glass. Three years later we were married. We’re nearing five years together & expanded to a family of three this past summer. I have never been happier or more sure of something in my life.

  67. Was very tipsy at a college party [yikes!] and had just broken up with my silly ex and told my best guy friend to tell this 6’7” gentleman [who was also very tipsy] that I thought he was super cute. After 4 years of hook- ups, living on opposite sides of the country, and a lot of text messages/laughs as friends, we were on the same side of the country again, spent a ton of time together, and he officially asked me out! The rest is history. He’s SO AWESOME and I love him for it :)

  68. I met him 6 years ago, my girl friend had invited me and his boyfriend had invited HIM to see a movie. It was “Ensemble c’est tout”. BINGO !

  69. My boyfriend and I met on a blind date. We were both living in Switzerland at the time and knew a mutual friend from back home who eventually set us up. We are both from Kansas, but met on the other side of the world! Almost three years later and we are still dating :)

I love hearing about how people met–there are just so many interesting stories and they make the world feel so small.
    -Kristina

  70. My fiance and I are both graduate students at the same university, which is how we met – although to be honest, I don’t remember the first time at all! I always thought he was super handsome, but I was convinced that he had a girlfriend so I never really thought about him romantically. I was super surprised when he randomly messaged me and asked if I wanted to get a coffee sometime. Our first real date was on a warm spring evening. We went to a street party (meeting on a bookstore first) and then out for a few drinks. He was walking me home and we happened to pass a bakery; the lights were on even though it was after two in the morning. The baker noticed us outside and invited us in, and then for no reason at all, gave us a hot-out-of-the-oven baguette. We walked the rest of the way home snacking on our bread — I don’t why, but it felt so magical. We’re getting married in September, and I love him so much!

  73. DG says...

My husband and I met because I moved across the country for workshop course in Sustainable Building Technologies and we were roommates in the provided housing. I was a total creeper and looked around his room before I even met him. I had not been west of Pennslyvania before and I was curious about the Arizona folk I would be living with! When we walked through the door later that evening my heart pounded at how handsome he was. Nine years later and we are married and I still get weak in the knees when I see him unexpectantly or if we have been apart for a while.

  74. Jo you should do a post on that, like girls making the first move. I feel like that is sort of thing..like should you or shouldn’t you and how great you did because Alex didn’t!

  75. I met my hubby online. He wrote me but I didn’t like him so I didn’t respond. Months later he wrote me again, basically saying he was giving me another chance. Wow, cocky much? But I caved and wrote him back. On one of our early dates (maybe 2nd?) I was in his car and happened to look in the back seat…I think there was some rope and a shovel back there…so I jokingly said, “Oh, what’s all that for?” and he said that if our date didn’t go well he was going to take me somewhere and bury me. What the heck?!?! I have since learned (from 5 years of marriage) that he has the most wicked and twisted sense of humor! I say now that his homicidal tendencies won me over! Probably not a story we are going to tell our grandchildren!:)

  76. I just got married on January 12th. We met 10 years ago this summer when I drove from my apartment in San Diego to Ventura to visit my cousin. Her and her boyfriend (they’re married now) had this new friend and we all planned to go hang out for the night. We picked up the new friend at his place and he got in the backseat with me and I immediately liked him….which meant I stared at the ground and acted busy the whole night. (I was a very young 21) Three years later the DJ at the same cousin’s wedding made us dance together because we were the only single people in the wedding party. The next day he called me, and we were together for 7 years until our own wedding earlier this month.

  77. I walked in on him pooping.

We were staying in the same cabin with a bunch of mutual friends for a weekend broomball tournament in Wisconsin, and the bathroom door didn’t have a lock, and I opened it without thinking because I really had to go pee, and our eyes met, and then I sloooowly backed out and shut the door. Love at first sight, y’all.

  78. eHarmony! I had just moved back to Indianapolis from Chicago. Most of my friends in Indy were married, starting families, etc. I figured…why not? At the very least, I would get a few good tales out of the deal. Mike was my FIRST eHarm date & my last. 3 years later we were married. I have never been happier or more sure of anything in my life.

  79. We met at a vegetarian Thanksgiving party thrown by a mutual friend…crazily enough my parents met in the 70s at a vegetarian restaurant :)

  80. I met my boyfriend of 4 years on J Date. We are both always embarrassed to tell people that we met online. Apparently he messaged me a few times, and I didn’t think he was physically my type, but he’s been the best boyfriend a girl could ever ask for…. even after we had a disasterous first date. Definitely can’t wait to see what the future has in store for us!

  81. My boyfriend and I went to high school together but reconnected when he started asking me about apartments in Boston. I moved here for grad school last year and he was going to come up to go to Berklee and he knew I was here so started talking. Then we started chatting more about life and other things… and after about 5 months of talking here and there we finally talked on the phone and then 2 months after that he finally asked me out! It’s long-distance since he didn’t end up coming to Berklee but we’re working it out!

  82. I met my wife in grade school! Never thought I’d be that girl. :)

  83. We met at a wedding. He was friends with the groom and I worked with the bride. I kept catching him looking at me from across the aisle and my friend eventually orchestrated a somewhat awkward introduction. We danced and had a great conversation, but he had to leave early to go to another party. When he didn’t ask for my number, I felt a pang of disappointment. I thought we had really hit it off. But two weeks later he called me after poring over the phone book (this was the 90s after all!) trying to figure out how to spell my last name. As it turns out, he was seeing someone and wanted to end things properly with her before calling me. Six years later, he proposed to me at the very place we met.

  84. We met on the street. I was walking to the subway and he was on his way to work. We passed by each other and as I was about to walk down the stairs into the subway, I felt a tap. At first I was very suspicious about a random guy trying to talk to me (this is after years of living in Manhattan, you learn to be wary of strangers on the street), but he was so nervous and cute. It totally didn’t feel like he was trying to “pick me up,” so I ended up giving him my email. He wrote me a few hours later and two years later, now we’re moving into our new apartment in Brooklyn this weekend and getting married in about a month!

  85. All of these adorable stories made me want to share my own!

We swam in the same summer league in high school (although he lived an hour away). Everyone thought he was SO cute. We even gave him a nickname based on his amazing blue eyes. I would see him throughout the year at swim meets and water polo games and say hello, but nothing ever happened. I was terribly shy.

We ended up going to U of M (Go Blue!) and both joined the water polo team. About a month into college, the water polo boys hosted a little party and I went. I knew he lived there and he came down from his room sleepy and shirtless, but stayed up and talked to me. We made plans to hang out and watch movies the next day, but he didn’t answer his phone! I thought that he stood me up! He called me a little while later asking why I didn’t call him (he hadn’t heard his land-line ringing and there was no voicemail… HA!). We hung out later that day. Ten years later, we’re happily married. I still can’t believe my luck.

  86. My partner and I are a MYSPACE love story. Oh man. We are both a little hesitant to tell people we aren’t close with because it’s so embarrassing! However, if myspace was the only way for he and I to connect from California (me) to Pittsburgh (him), then there should be nothing to be embarrassed by, right?. We have been together (in the flesh) for over 7 years…

  87. He was a police officer and I was the assistant manager at a bookstore on his beat. He says now that it was love at first sight (which it was for me as well) but it took 28 years for us to get married. We dated for a while then I moved out of state and he got married (and divorced) but we always kept in touch. Then last April he came for a weekend visit and after about 20 minutes said, “I think we should get married.” I was stunned because at that point we hadn’t actually seen each other for about 5 years! After 4 days I said yes and we were married in May. He really is the love of my life and I am soooo happy that we are finally together!

  88. We met junior year of high school – because he was assigned to be my dance partner in show choir, haha. I’d become good friends with his older sister the year before, so I knew about him, but had never met him. He was goofy, hyper, immature (standard 16 yr-old boy), sweet, funny, and crazy about me. :) However, I drew the line at “just friends” for a number of reasons. Over ten years of friendship he became one of the most loyal, caring, driven, and wonderful people in my life – fiercely protective of me as well. I fell in love with him without even knowing it. When I was home for the holidays last year I spent every free moment with him – I even went last-minute Christmas shopping with him on Christmas Eve Day instead of helping my mom prepare dinner! A few days before I had to head back to NYC, he tentatively asked if we could grab a drink and talk…I was terrified the night we went out; I found every opportunity to procrastinate having “the talk”, but at some point he just jumped in and said he couldn’t keep it to himself anymore – he was at a loss, he said, because every time he sees me he just falls in love with me all over again. I told him I felt the same way. I can still vividly see his complete look of shock! Later, he told me he was afraid to even hope that I might have feelings for him, that he’d talked himself into thinking that I would say we couldn’t be friends anymore. We’ve been in a long-distance relationship for a little over a year now, and I plan to move to him in six months…engagement plans are underway!

  89. Husband and I met at a social for international students hosted by a local church in the UK.

  90. I enjoyed reading everyone’s comments and stories on how they met their significant other. Thank you for sharing.

Our story started when my mom got my friend a job at the hospital where she worked. Some guys from the IT department were interested in meeting the new girl and invited her out for some drinks. She invited me to tag along to meet her new group of co-worker friends. I remember the moment I saw Brian (my now husband) walk into the outdoor patio bar. It wasn’t love at first sight. I am very tall and at the time wouldn’t dare date someone shorter than me. It didn’t matter at the time because he was interested in my friend and I was making googly eyes at the tall bartender. A few weeks later, Brian was going to ask me out and the bartender beat him to it.

Brian never gave up. He said he loved me before we even started dating and patiently waited for his chance to ask me out. So we remained good friends and kept in constant touch. My bartender boyfriend was extremely insecure and jealous of my friendship with Brian. He had every right to be because our friendship was growing into something more every time I hung out with Brian. Then Brian would start bluntly questioning why I was with my bartender boyfriend implying that he would be better suited. After a while, I asked myself the same question and realized he was right. I ended my relationship shortly after and Brian swooped in to sweep me off my feet.

It was on our first date to the city for ice skating, sushi and a walk in the park on the coldest night in January 2009 that I knew he was the one for me. We’ve been married six months and I couldn’t be happier.

My mom was right, you have to kiss a lot of toads before you find your prince!

  91. What a wonderful and thoughful post! =]

My significant other and I met during a comedy show one night last year, and have been nearly inseperable since. I’m a very lucky girl, that’s for sure!

  92. My hubby and I met at.a.BAR! Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would meet the one at a bar, and a Halloween costume party none the less! We went out on a date a week later, moved in together 6 months after that and have been inseparable ever since!

  93. I would love to hear alex’s version of this story!

  94. I met my husband at work. He was my bosses boss, which was kind of awkward. We talked at work for months and I had a crush on him. Then he asked me to get together outside of work, just as a friend thing. We started dating soon after that. I’m always nervous to tell people where we met because I’m worried they’ll think it was inappropriate, but it just wasn’t. He treated me like any other coworker while at work. And thankfully, we didn’t work at the same place for much longer.

  95. I love all of these stories!

I met my husband in college. He was friends with a friend of mine from high school, and I was the only girl that would hang out with this group of guys. We also had a math class together and we were in the same study group. I never thought of him in a romantic way until he graduated, left for a summer to be a kitesurfer, and then moved back to Seattle to work. Then we saw each other at a Christmas dinner party, and I saw him in a new light. We flirted all night, and we both were responsible so we crashed on our friends’ futon. The next day I was worried because I wasn’t sure if he was flirting with me and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to date a friend. So after a month of him getting my friend to invite me out with them a lot, he asked me out for sushi (even though he hated fish!). He braved his way through his first sushi, and we watched a movie at his house before he kissed me for the first time. I knew then that it was ok that I was dating a friend because we would be together forever. So cheesy, but I just knew it. Our first date was 9 years ago this month!

  96. How sweet! I love reading about how couples met!

I don’t remember the exact moment that I met my husband, sadly. We were both in the Longhorn Band at UT and in the Aerospace Engineering program, so between band and classes we eventually became acquaintances, then study buddies, then good friends. Finally after four and a half years of school, we graduated side by side. At this point I was smitten and very sad that he was moving to Boston and I was heading to LA. I figured nothing would ever happen. But something did! I invited friends over to watch a movie the following night, and no one could make it but him. It was the end of December, and Christmas was around the corner, so we watched Love Actually. About halfway through the movie, he put his arm around me, and my heart started racing. As the credits rolled, we had our first kiss. We moved to opposite coasts, dated long distance for a year and a half until we couldn’t stand it anymore, so I moved to Boston. We’ve now been married for a little over two years!

  97. I met my boyfriend at the pub I work at here. His best friend runs the pub. One night he came in while I was working, I didn’t know him at all, and towards the end of the night we had both gotten a little intoxicated. He leaned over the bar to kiss me, I hesitated but went for it anyway. He’s 22 years older than me, my boss wasn’t best pleased, but a year and four months later we are together and in love and no one worries about it anymore! A little bit dirty and a little bit sleazy but it’s something lovely now.

  98. On Jan 1, 2008, I decided that I might as well try the internet, since my previous relationship had been a setup by my mother. I had more fun dating in NYC through Match that Spring than I had had in my entire romantic life before then! On Jan 1, 2009, I moved in with someone I had met through the site, and we got married on March 20th. I sent him a message because his photo was of him making a silly face, standing in front of the Taj Mahal. I hadn’t even shown up in his search because I was younger than the age parameters he had set! I knew I would marry him when I realized that he was full of fun and mischief and still the very kindest man I had ever met.

  99. My boyfriend and I met when we were 14 in 2001. He was from Charlotte NC and I lived in suburban Massachusetts. His best friend from Charlotte, Justin, moved to my town in the 8th grade and we became close friends, and then Luke came to visit him for a week in Mass in the spring. I remember climbing into Justin’s mom’s car and saying ‘Hi Luke’ to the cute boy in the backseat wearing a Saves the Day teeshirt my brother had, and he said nothing back to me. He was so crazy shy, so Justin’s mom took us to Newbury Comics and Chili’s, and I think Luke and I had a two word conversation noticing we bought the same CD. That was kind of it, haha, I felt so awkward I told Justin’s mom I needed to go home to work on a project, and that afternoon, my friend Jess and I took a walk downtown and I told her all about Luke, the cute boy with the messed up teeth who bought the same CD, that I didn’t speak to.

  100. I am married for the 2nd time – I was married for 28 years, had met my husband when we were 18, and I didn’t know how to date as an adult! After being separated for a year (and after my older son’s wedding), I decided to go online (JDate). The 5th guy I made contact with turned out to be my next husband – I was very lucky! Turned out I knew people who knew him, which made it easier. We met 10 years ago, and we’ve been married for 8 years…very happily!

  101. We met as coworkers… and roommates! We may not have gotten together otherwise as he is slightly on the shy side and having the opportunity to see him at work and at home showed me a side of him I might have missed out on. About a month later, we were a couple. We moved out of that first house, and now two years and two apartments later, we are still happily together! Yep, I met the love of my life when I least expected it.

  102. I met my boyfriend studying abroad in Costa Rica in undergrad! When I first saw him I thought for sure he had a girlfriend, because his roommate’s girlfriend was also in our group and she was clinging to him constantly. I soon found out that she actually preferred him to the roommate, and proceeded to spend weeks chatting him up attempting to suss out his interest in this girl. I finally discovered that it wasn’t her he was interested in, but me! Sometimes love sneaks up on you when you least expect it :)

  103. It was 2007, and I was headed to my first ‘away-from-home’ summer job; looking for a mental break from my aersopace engineering studies.

I flew from Ottawa, Canada to Charlotte, South Carolina and stepped onto my Uncle’s mega-yacht on which I was to be the new stewardess. The moment I walked into the galley and shook the handsome/gentleman-ly chef’s hands I knew it was going to be the best summer and the best rest of my life!

We got married last August, 2012.

  104. My husband and I met at a pool party when I was 18. My friends gave him a call and invited him over thinking he was perfect for me. I couldn’t believe it but they were right! The next day we went on a date and have been at the hip ever since. I remember thinking it was a summer fling at first since he was in college and I was in high school. :) 11 years later we are the best of friends and are excepting our first born in June!

  105. so… lisbon, year 1999. august. summer holidays. the new science museum had just opened and there was a room with free internet access. i spent there around 3h every afternoon (no internet at home). web surfing, web chatting (remember mIRC?). on one of those channels i started talking to a boy. the same introduction to everyone as usual (age? location? sex? blablabla) … around 15min into it he askes if he can come meet me. just like that. i said yes. he lived nearby so in 10/15min we were saying hi. i was nervous but excited! from that day forward we started going together to the museum, almost every week day. we became friends.
on march 2000 we gave our first kiss. i was almost 17, he was 18. we’ve been together ever since. we moved in together 2 years ago and have 2 cats :)

  107. We met freshman year of college after being placed in the same dorm – My focus was mainly on academics, but he was persistent and would sit on my dorm room rug while I studied for chemistry class – I was completely oblivious to the fact that he was interested in me until a friend pointed out how much time he spent hanging around on our floor :)

Here we are, over 7 years later, and he still spends his time keeping me company while I study for class (except I’m in graduate school now). He is my ultimate support system and best friend.

  108. The story started to be in very hot summer day in the middle of woods (as I was celebrating my friend birthday) when birds were too lazy to fly and wild animals were on vacations.
Was it love from the first look of the eye corner? NO. But he had great ass, cute eyes, and amazing humor. As I have amazing legs (little ones, but still beautiful), great brains and lovely eyes too- there was definitely a chemistry between as, or just hot (as outside it was about +35).
So we all together spend two days, and on the second day of summer laziness I won our gamble game – at first day he gave me little “S” form wooden prop, and said to me keep it till the of that weekend. On the next day he asked me, do I still have that wooden miracle. I said – yes. Then, with very smart beard face, cute butt and amazing eyes, he said: if you don’t have it – you will take me to the dinner. If you have- I will take you. So, I had it. And after four month (this is how long it took me to enter his phone number to mine) I said yes for the dinner time.
He took me to the Georgian restaurant and suggested an “amazing” dish- Carp fish. So after that horrible first date, when he was so clumsy, I was dirty as hell after eating that hell fish- we made couple more dates to high the level of dating and made it officially- bought flat and started to live together (of course there are more than couple of dates, but beginning story was smth like this.

  110. I love this post! I read every single post (when you’re home sick, you have time to kill) and I never do that. But everyone’s story is just so interesting. Excited to share my own story one day. :)

  111. Loving reading all these stories! My boyfriend and I worked for the same company for years, but didn’t really meet properly until last year, and I was so shy around him I could hardly speak to him at work other than to offer a cup of tea! We finally got chatting on a work night out – I needed a bit of dutch courage! – and the rest is history.

  112. Haven’t met mine yet.. only 14 so not too worried, got a long time haha :) Even though I’m only 14, I agree with your other post, it just seems that so many divorce these days, or start to disbelieve in true love, that there is a person for you, it makes me think that maybe I won’t really find that one soul mate that will just click with me :) I’m just hoping it miraculously can be like the movies in that way.. or at least in its own way haha :)

  114. My husband and I met on our second day at university. We were in the same hall and shared a kitchen so would sit drinking coffee and chatting every morning and stay up late listening to music at night. I liked him but assumed he didn’t like me back as that had always been the case with guys so when he kissed me a month or so after we met I was so surprised that I didn’t respond at all. He apologised, I muttered something about it being fine, and the rest is history. That was just over 15 years ago and we eloped to City Hall in NYC last June.

  115. I met my husband through eharmony. He was the only guy I went out with from there, something about his profile intrigued me. A few messages later our first date was at Urth Cafe in west hollywood. We dated 2 years and got married last July. I’m so glad I got the courage to join an online dating. It was worth it.

  116. University. We were part of the same circle of friends and I never really noticed him, but we started hanging out more often and he fell for me. I wasn’t entirely sold yet (I’m a slow learner?) and I remember he suggested going to see the new Harry Potter movie and I agreed but wanted to make sure it wasn’t seen as a date so I invited anyone and everyone I could find… no one else came. So I guess… that was our first date? I think he spent more time staring at me than the movie… eventually I was won over. That was ten years ago this February :)

  117. My man and I met on the tube in London – Northern line, last train of the night. I was with all my girl friends and one of them asked him to come with us for a drink, and that if he did, he could have the ‘pick of the litter’ (meaning one of us girls – how mortifying!) After much convincing he came along, and I struck up a conversation on the walk to the pub in Camden. I only got to say a few sentences before another girl wanted to have a try, so I thought that was it for me for the night. Low and behold, when all the other girls disappeared to the bathroom at the pub, he came to ask ME to sit with him – and we were inseparable the rest of the night! Our first date was 2 days later. :) So London and the tube have a sweet spot in my heart! x

  118. My husband and I met whilst I was traveling in Europe. I asked my ex boyfriend’s brother (of all people) if he knew someone I could stay with in London and he recommended this guy, Joe, who was a friend of a friend. So I emailed said Joe and asked if I could sleep on his couch for a few days. Needless to say, I ended up sleeping in his bed ;) Little did I know that “fling” would turn into a 3-year long distance relationship (Montreal to London). We’ve now been married for a little over a year and I live in London. I wrote about our entire story on my blog if you have hours to waste haha

  119. My fiance and I met as exchange students in Finland. And we were basically smitten from the first time we met. After 6 months in Finland, we returned back to our home countries (me = US, him = Netherlands) and did long distance for a whole year with trips to see each other every few months. Then I moved to Amsterdam where we’ve been living for the last 4.5 years! This week 6 years ago is when we kicked off our semester abroad in Finland and is also the week that we met. The same week was my birthday and I knew he kind of liked me because he walked 2 miles through the snow in Finland in the dead of winter to my birthday party….with 30 beers in hand haha. Nine months from now we’ll be getting married! Crazy how a semester abroad can lead to love :). Our next plan is to relocate to sunny So California.

  120. Our story isn’t very romantic – it’s actually something I don’t like to talk about much, as it brings up sad memories for me. We met in junior high but didn’t become friends until senior year of high school. We ended up going to college together and had the same major, so we became even better friends. I began having feelings for him in our sophomore year, and he claims that he apparently did too at the time. But neither of us took the initiative to say anything, and my roommate also liked him. She asked him out and he ended up dating my roommate. I was incredibly heartbroken for quite a while. He dated her for a little under a year, and I ended up dating someone else for a couple of years. A few months after I broke up with him, we finally got together. It’s been 3 years now, and we are very happy, despite a bad beginning.

  121. We met 9 years ago in the record store where he used to work, when I was buying CDs. We’re getting married in June!

  122. Six months after I finished college (in Boston, MA), I moved to Johannesburg, South Africa to intern with a church. It was supposed to be for a year, and I thought, “When can I just up and move to another country?” So that’s exactly what I did. Well, lo and behold, I met my husband the day I arrived in the country, we started dating three months later, and almost two years later, we got married… on 7 December 2012! We are still living in South Africa but hope to move back to the States in the next couple years. :)

  123. I met my husband while traveling with my parents post-graduation. We were in Holland, staying at a hotel in the middle of the countryside, and when I asked to use the internet, this cute guy took me to his house (connected to the hotel) and let me use his computer. It turns out this was his family’s hotel! Our group stayed at the hotel for two days, and both evenings wmy huband-to-be and I went out in the tiny village. I returned to the USA and over the next year we maintained a long-distance relationship, visiting each other, emailing and sometimes a phone call (before skype!) Almost exactly a year later, I moved to Holland to see if our relationship would work. I had just graduated from college and hadn’t yet started on a career, so had more freedom to move and he was working at the hotel and couldn’t leave. Almost 12 years later we are still happily married with three kids, living in Holland (although we also spent 8 years living in the US) and we always marvel at the unique circumstances under which we met!

  124. My husband saw me at a fourth of July party senior year of high school. We didn’t go to the same high school but shared mutual friends. He saw me and told my friends that he was going to marry me. Well, he didn’t get the courage to truly meet me for another year when we went out to coffee and talked for nearly 5 hours. On May 26th we will be married for a year and together for over 6 years!

  125. i feel like mine is quite long, but i love it and i don;t get to tell it often…in the summer of 2010 i moved to germany to be an au pair. i met him through a friend while in a club. we started hanging out, very platonic, non stop. we eventually became the best of friends, but nothing ever happened between us even though we both wanted it. the next summer, the time came for me to move back home. i said all of my goodbyes and got on that plane. we were stuck on the tarmac for hours and eventually rescheduled to fly out the next morning. my host family was still in the area (miraculously) and brought me back home. i made him stay the night with me (like he had many times before…) and he finally made a move. Make out session all night ;) and on no sleep he drove me to the airport with my host parents. flying home was the most depressing thing of my life at that moment. i hated being without him. three months later, in september 2011, he flew to america for the first time to visit me in california. nothing was set in stone in terms of “us”, but an amazing san francisco giants win, lots of beer and margaritas, we made it official. the long distance is torture, but we’ve been at it for almost two years and i wouldn’t trade any of it for the world. he is my best friend and cannot wait to spend the rest of my days with him, wherever we are. hopefully i will be moving back to Germany next year!

loving reading all of these comments about love :)

  126. That’s awesome! I’d love to hear Alex’s perspective!

  127. My fiance and I met 5 years ago during our sophomore spring semester abroad in Austria. What’s even more amazing is that we’re from 30 minutes away from each other in Texas and we even spent an entire semester before that going to the same college in Ohio, but we didn’t meet until we were in Europe together.

  128. I met my husband at a Calexico show that my then boyfriend had purchased tickets for. He decided to skip out on that night and let me go with my friends. Unfortunately for him, I saw my soon to be husband across the room and it was all over. I was smitten from the get go though I didn’t give my future husband my number until after my boyfriend and I broke up a few days later.

  129. My husband was a regular in a restaurant i worked at. He asked me out every Tuesday and Thursday for a year. I was moving back and forth from San Diego so i decided that a boyfriend back home would not be ideal. When i moved back home for good about 6 months later, I saw him out with friends at a different restaurant. i was sitting with my friend at the bar and she asked, “isn’t that the guy who use to ask you out all the time?” i said- “yea.. watch this…” and picked up my phone, called him-while watching him- he picked up his phone…looked at the phone number and IGNORED THE CALL!! i said ” how dare he ignore my call!”
so i texted him just that. He the proceeded to look around and found me and my friend at the bar, and said to me very sternly, ” when are you going to let me take you to lunch?” that next day we had lunch together, and never stopped having lunch together. we got married five years later .

thanks for this post…i love our story..cause it’s ours.

  130. We met on an airplane. His seat was changed at the last minute, and he got the last seat on the plane next to me. We talked for the entire DC to LA flight, and sort of figured, ‘hey, we should hang out’.

  131. I was in the States visiting a friend and went to a party. This very cute guy was there but my heart sank when I realised he had a girlfriend. We spoke very briefly about books and my robot watch… then months later he emailed me. He was single! We started chatting… and that became a daily affair… eventually he got on a plane to Australia to see me… and the rest is history :) We’ve been together almost seven years and married five. Best years of my life.

  132. Like many “how we met” stories, my husband, Nate, and I met in college. But unlike most of the other stories that begin in a classroom or during a study group, our story began on the streets of Melbourne, Australia.
During the month-long study abroad trip to Oz, we had the chance to get to know each other inside and outside the classroom. On one of the first nights in the country, we both went out to dinner with a few other classmates, but didn’t talk much that night. Little did we know, the trip started what would become an fast friendship.
The moment I knew Nate would be my future husband came one day on a beach in Sydney. Most of our classmates were busy, so we decided to hop on a ferry and head to the beach, just the two of us. We spent the day talking about everything from family and friends, to passions and politics. I was smitten and I later found out he was too. One problem – I was dating someone else at the time!
A year later, my relationship ended. My beach boy and I reconnected and became a couple. We got married in August and couldn’t be happier :)
