Swing Art Installation

I’m a huge fan of interactive art exhibits (like the Grand Central secret and the New Museum playground), so my jaw dropped when I heard about the current Ann Hamilton show in Manhattan. Her installation features 42 swings, which, in turn, move an enormous billowy curtain. “When the swings are in action, the curtain, made of a lightweight silk twill, rises and dips, and the air is stirred, causing further billowing and fluttering,” writes the New York Times, “Pigeons and an actress provide a soundtrack.” Some people glide on the swings, some lie on the ground under the curtain and some sit on benches to take it all in. The show runs through January 6th at the Armory. I can’t wait to take Toby!

  2. It was indescribably interesting! I stayed for a few hours, and left with a wonderful memory but, sadly, fuzzy photos, as my camera lens was not screwed on completely. Rookie mistake.

  3. I’m so sad that i missed this … hope it returns.

  4. Its right by my school, Hunter College!!

  5. I went this weekend and it was so amazing. I could have stayed there all day! Anyone who can, go! It’s a must.

started here in Austin by a UT student, and there are now swings all over the world. you can hang one in your neighborhood and be a part of a world-wide swing art installation.

  15. i’m also obsessed with New Museum! my boyfriend introduced me to it on a trip to NYC a few years ago and it’s fantastic. i was so jealous when you posted about the slide exhibit – i had to hold back from booking spontaneous a NYC trip.

thanks for sharing this! it’s reminding me that maybe i should take the leap on that surprise trip for my boyfriend and i!

  21. That looks like sooooo much fun! It reminds me of one of the final dance sequences in the movie The Company, with Neve Campbell. It’s danced to Julee Cruise’s “The World Spins” and involves gentle swinging across the stage.

  22. This is too amazing! I would love to visit this (with our without the kids!)…

  23. That’s incredible! I love the concept and reading the many ways people can participate in this art to enjoy it. Wish I lived closer! Ha ha! Thanks for sharing photos so we could all enjoy! – Ally S.

  25. Love it. I don’t know if you guys have heard of the St. Louis City Museum, but I think it would blow your mind. My husband and I went here when we were dating early on, and it was the best date I’ve ever been on! Take a look at the Yelp photos to see what I mean….it’s magical! http://www.yelp.com/biz/city-museum-saint-louis
