Last night, after the power went out, this was the view from our window in downtown Manhattan. Eerie! You can barely see the buildings against the sky. The other odd thing is that our neighborhood was silent. Normally our street is very busy, and we can always hear cars driving by, honking, people chatting—all the normal sounds of a big city. But last night, it felt like we were sleeping in the middle of the woods; totally silent. How are you guys doing today? Sending our thoughts to you and your loved ones. xoxo
my best friend’s mom makes $68/hour on the computer. She has been out of work for six months but last month her pay check was $21662 just working on the computer for a few hours. Read more on this web site http://www.taz3.com
that is one of the coolest shots i’ve seen so far of the storm + its effect…it’s really striking, since my eyes first thought it was an all-black shot, and only once i looked closer, did i see the tonal change where the buildings are silhouetted.
hope you are all doing well over there!! <3
Did you find it difficult to fall asleep? There is such a thing as too quiet when you’re used to the noise don’t you think?
Sending you love and support from the west coast! Hope you and your family are safe.

Sending you love and support from the west coast! Hope you and your family are safe.

It’s just so insane how bad things actually got! I hope everyone is staying safe!
we lost power until last night, and the hudson river overflowed up to 1 block from our house! and we live in jersey city a little over a half a mile from the river! power’s back because we live so close to the PATH trains… thankfully! pray for those along the shores in long island, jersey, and especially staten island…
Hope you got power back – I’m in Maryland, and we were lucky. My stepdaughter lives in the West Village – we heard from her as she and her roommate were walking uptown to stay with a friend who had power.
Devastating pictures last night from the Jersey shore and Breezy Point – just terrible.
Oh Joanna! Stay safe and hugs for Toby. Thinking and praying for y’all in the east coast xoxo
Wow! At first I was waiting for the photo to load, then realized that that WAS the photo! Amazing. There’s a children’s book called Blackout http://www.amazon.com/Blackout-John-Rocco/dp/1423121902 that this reminds me of (though it is just a regular power outage and has nothing scary/tragic associated)…my two year old loves the story! It says, “And then/The lights/Went out/All of them. The city was dark…and quiet.” Hope you get power restored soon and stay safe!
Glad that you’re all okay! The photo looks so eerie, this storm is a real reminder of the sheer force of mother nature.
Cool, eerie photo..
I posted about our flooding in Norfolk, VA on my blog. http://Www.croquetncocktails.blogspot.com
It was nothing like what you guys experienced in NY. The images I saw this morning made me feel ill. You guys are in my prayers.
We’re in Southern CT. We were preparing for the worst, as was everyone else in our area- but were barely touched, thankfully!
Stay safe over the next few days (and beyond of course!)
Eat Cake
Glad to hear you guys are safe. We lost power due to high winds in Toronto. Can’t imagine what you went through. Hope things return to normal soon.
That’s super eerie! I’m glad you and your family are ok!
I’m thinking that there is a children’s book about the power going out in a big city?!
I remember it being a really neat little book. Might be a good read for you guys.
craziness! Glad you’re all ok.
A very eerie darkness and silence, like being out in the country with no lights or neighbors. It’s a strange thing how quiet people get when this happens. Very few places have power.
My sister sent me a similar pic (she lives in Soho) – now without power and water (and can’t find a hotel). Thinking about all affected!

Thinking of everyone today! Still without power in CT, and finally found a place to crash with heat, water and internet! All I want to do is sleep! Glad you are all safe and sound! I wonder when power will come back? My cousin lives in West Village and have not heard anything from her yet!
i hope u r ok! maggie from italy
That is a very scary view. A silent Manhattan is definitely eerie.
Be safe out there! We’re thinking of you!
be safe over there on the east coast!
That is eerie! Do you have power yet? Hope you’re okay!
Hope you guys are ok. How scary!
Have you ever seen the children’s book Blackout by John Rocco? Beautiful illustrations.
Wow. How intense! I hope all of you and yours are well.
I live in Chelsea and luckily was 1 block away from where ConEd shut off power so I’ve had power the whole time. It was crazy though, like you said, looking out the window and not seeing any people or cars. The only things on the road were constant fire trucks.
Im not too far a few hours away from you . we got flooding and lights were off now everything is just cold and rainy. I love my home state but not when there isnt no lights oh new york. lol
I’m glad you guys are okay. The picture looks eerie. We have family in Chelsea so we are keeping everyone in our thoughts!

Wow!!! How crazy. I hope you are all okay and that like quickly is able to get back to normal.
Yikes, creepy!! We didn’t get hit too hard, no power outages in my neighborhood, but transformers were blowing up all over the place last night, it looked like blue lightning!
Hope you’re all safe… A friend of my, who lives in NYC, has told me tath was a little scary night…
Xoxo
My family is all out east, but i think they’re alright.
how is toby handling it?
Hope you are all ok.
Wow, I kept waiting for the image to download! Stay safe!
VERY eerie! Amazing how this type of thing changes one’s perspective, isn’t it? Someone told me that a major street was shut down in NYC once and everyone was in the street playing football and that it was quite a sight to see. I remember once our power went out when I lived in AZ and we all sat around looking at each other, like, okay, what do we do now? we ended up piling in the car and driving around chatting with the neighbors.
Very strange image for NYC, but also incredibly startlingly (I can’t stop staring at it!) Thanks for sharing.
That picture is so eerie! Stay safe.
i love when we have power cuts…..forces a calm romance into the busiest of lives. We get a couple power cuts a year living in the french country, after a few days the romance slightly wears off!
I don’t even know how to comprehend an experience such as the one you are going through. How scary it would be to become affected by something so big with no way to control it. I feel blessed to live in Utah were there hasn’t been any such devastation as big as this. My thoughts are with you and your loved ones.

So glad you and your sweet family are OK. Thinking of loved ones on Long Island and everyone affected by the storm. Stay safe!
Hope you are doing okay, Joanna. Thinking of you and everyone in NY and NJ affected by this storm.
Hope everyone is safe, cannot imagine what a storm like that must be like, living in England and all.

I don’t know anybody from NY personally, but my thoughts are with you and all the other people affected by the storm. STAY SAFE!!
It’s good to see a post from you. I’m very worried about my friend up North – sending positive thoughts and prayers to all.
I couldn’t stop reading Twitter and looking at pictures last night… so scary!
Glad you’re safe.
So eerie!!!! Hope you guys are ok. Sending positive thoughts east!!

That’s a very surreal picture. Hope everyone is ok and that this passes soon!
Hope you are alright.

This portrait of Sadny is beautiful…
Wow Jo!!! That picture is very creepy!
It’s hard to believe that it’s even real.
Thoughts and prayers are with you all x
All our thoughts from overseas are with you. It must have been really scary. Speacially in NYC since its such a lively and loud city. And the blackout there… weird! Hope Toby wasn’t too scared! How did you entertain him and explain him what was going on? It must have been very impressive for a toddler!
Take care and stay safe!!
All the love xoxo
Silence is powerful. Hope all is well today.
I was in town this weekend and was supposed to leave Monday, but of course my flight was cancelled. I don’t know how I lucked out, but I was able to get on the very last flight out of LGA Sunday night that took me straight home. Yea! That city shut down!
Soooo eerie….
Take care…. thinking of all of those who are dealing with the effects of this insane weather.
On the west coast we are sending lots of love and prayers to all of you effected back east. Stay safe! xo!
glad to hear that you and your family are dealing with a power outage and not something worse. hope you get power soon. thinking of all those hardest hit in the northeast.
i’m in northern virginia and we were spared from the worst. thank God.
take care all!
Glad to hear you are okay. We lost some apple trees, but nothing major. Last year, my little neck of the woods was completely decimated by Irene/Lee, and the clean-up still isn’t finished. Luckily we were spared. My heart goes out to those affected, as I know how bad it is!
Sending good thoughts and prayers from San Diego. My bff just moved to Manhattan and needless to say was not expecting anything like this. Go away Frankenstorm!
I’m glad to hear both you and your family is OK!

Check out http://instacane.com its a compliation of instagram photos Hurricane Sandy style
Wow, I can’t even imagine New York liek that. It look more like my home villgae in Norfolk, England, in the middle of the countryside!
I hope you and your loved onesa and friends are all managing to stay safe.
xx
i am on the upper west side and the winds were terrifying. i was afraid to look out my window when i woke up this morning. so thankful to be safe and sound at home, and i am glad your family is ok!
Wow! Stay safe, Sandy has been absolutely horrible and my heart goes out to so many. Here in Michigan there is lots of wind, rain, snow, and some power outages but nothing to actually complain about.
