Do or Don’t: Bangs

The New York Times yesterday featured a funny piece about bangs. Apparently, 2012 is the “year of the bang,” and you can wear them so thick you look “like one of the Beatles,” or as short as “the mowed grass in Yankee Stadium.” Do you have bangs? Do you want them? Bangs don’t usually suit me, but I’m suddenly dying to go for it anyway.

  1. HOW I GAIN BACK MY HAIR WITH THE HLPE OF DR OPINGO.
Thank you once again Dr OPINGO i now have long and thick hair that people always love and cherish, some years ago i fell sick and my hair were cut off, after the illness i try all my possible best to bring back my natural hair no way.But i am eating very well. I have ask so many question on internet on how to gain back my long and thick hair and i have also use so many chemical like antidruf contaning ketoconazo and tugain and many other chemical just to make sure i gain back my hair, i have follow so many advice online to bring back my hair and know one have work. I was online one day and i saw a testimony that Dr OPINGO help people to grow back their natural hair, i email him immediately and explain everything about how i loose my hair, DR OPINGO told me not to worry that i am on the right place to have my hair back, and DR ask me to send my information to start growing the hair i was so surprise because i never believe this will work, after doing what DR ask my to do i was so surprise after three weeks my natural hair start to grow more than before, and now i have a very long and thick natural hair, friends i will advice you to meet this good DR, nothing i have not done but when i email DR my story was change you can reach DR email (alterofcandletemple05@gmail.com).

  2. I love my bangs. I’ve had ’em on and off for years now, both short and side-swept long. A couple months ago, I cut them to just below eyebrow length, which is sort of my “perfect” place. After I shower, I really just have to dry my bangs – the rest can dry naturally and still look fine – no straightening or styling required. :)

I cut my bangs for the fall/winter season, then let them grow in for the summer so I can pin the hair back. They’re really flattering on my high-foreheaded, long oval face.

  4. I love them but as a runner, they become very high maintenance. I also have a cow lick that make them part and it’s not even far enough to the side to do side swept… but regardless, I have sported both throughout the years and am always itching to chop them back! -JB.

  5. I have blunt bangs, and they suit me pretty well! My main reason for bangs: I don’t have to pluck those high-maintenace eyebrows!

  6. Eleanor S says...

I would love love love to see you get bangs! They’re my heart & soul.

  7. i have had sideswept bangs forever now, but i recently cut my bangs to a full fringe that i could sweep to the side. Of course, they aren’t as full as Zooey Deschanel’s, but they are kind of shaggy and look good with bed head haha. But it’s an easy non-commital way to try a fringe :)

  8. Yes, yes, yes!! I love bangs. I just got my very own bangs in honor of Zooey about three weeks ago and I’m so much in love with them. I highly recommend them. I didn’t they they would suit me either but they actually look great (in my opinion, hehe). Go for it!

  9. I love the bangs, I always thought I’d return to brunette with these bangs..the day is yet to come. Hoever, what I think are even more beautiful are the freckles. They’re stunning and so fresh for summer, then again I might be slightly biased.

  10. Kirsty says...

Every couple of years I get this weird urge to get someone to cut me some bangs. Every time I do it, I regret it and spend the next 6 months hating them, pinning them back and kicking my past self for being so stupid as to think that THIS time they will look good! They make my face look like a plate…Some people look freakin’ amazing with them though.

  11. Sarah says...

I love a fringe, I yearn for one, cut one every few years or so, spend at the most a week feeling like some cool 60s chick, then spend the next two years growing them out. I never learn!

  12. Oh my gosh so glad you posted about this! I’ve seriously been considering bangs for the summer! That sounds a little backwards because you’re supposed to keep hair low-maintenance and easy in summer but bangs just seem so now! I’m thinking a breezy, wispy look.

  13. Hi!
I have very short bangs, which they grow too fast. I just think that they’re so cute :-)

  14. Ana says...

I have bangs for more than a year now.. and I can no longer imagine myself without them anymore.

Must say that my inspiration came from Anne Hathaway´s Andrea Sachs from The Devil Wears Prada.

Every 03 weeks or so I show my hairdresser the same pictures just to make sure the bangs get strictly like Anne´s!!! ;)

  15. My husband and I are constantly debating this. I love bangs, he does not. To keep us both happy I flip between the two. As a matter of fact, I have a hair appointment next week and my turn is up. The bangs will be back!

  16. 2011 was my year of the bang! Getting the compliments saying I looked like Zooey Deschanel was pretty rad. A few friends started even calling me Jess, hehe.

For summer/heat/humidity reasons, this summer, I’m growing them out. Time for other gals to shine with bangs.

I absolutely LOVE the look on so many ladies. So flattering!

  17. in my opinion, you can’t just decide that you want bangs and they will automatically look good. you either have the hair and the face for it or you don’t. i love them, although could not pull them off because my hair is so fine and stick straight, it just would not work the way i’d want it to!

  18. I got bangs in college and realized all this time, I really really needed them because of my large forehead and sad eyebrows. Since then, I’ve tried several times to grow out my hair but before they have a chance to fully grow, I end up cutting them. I guess they’ve kinda become a major part of me now. I would feel pretty naked without them.

P.S.- I trim my bangs myself about every two weeks, so it has become routine.

  19. I know there are many other Australians who read this blog so I am not embarrassed to ask;

    WHAT, pray-tell, exactly ARE “bangs”?

Just when I thought I had American language all figured out…this comes along! About a year ago, with the help of this very blog, I had the definition narrowed down to the Aussie equivalent of pig-tails (pony-tails on the side). But now I’m like, WHAT?

The photos here of the three actresses- all with completely different hairstyles- don’t help a bit!

Are “bangs” what we would call “a fringe”? If so, the first actress doesn’t have one to speak of! And why pluralize it?

Anyone (or any other foreigners as utterly confused as me)?

    Thanks in advance!!

  20. Can’t do bangs. I tried it in middle school and that phase lasted for way longer than it should have. My hair is just too thick.

Joanna, I love your hair tutorials (and all hair related posts, really). Caroline has very enviable locks!

Would you ever consider doing one or two ‘corporate’ hair tutorials? I work as a lawyer and it gets boring wearing my hair down day after day, which is the only thing I can ever think of to look ‘appropriate’. Not to mention, long hours don’t leave a ton of time for full blow-outs, so my hair is always straight and boring, or pulled back in a ponytail. What would you suggest for 1 or 2 day old hair that is fun and feminine, but still looks professional?

    Thanks for considering! Shannon

  22. I LOVE bold, blunt bangs – but 2012 is the year I’m trying to grow mine out (torturous!). They’re great until you get sweaty/they get greasy, you try to wear a hat (all winter where I live), it rains, make glasses a smudgy mess… *sigh* I wish they were more practical because they are so darn cute! I’m sure I’ll go back to them again one day…

  23. I really think it depends on the shape of your face. I didn’t have them when I grew my hair out a few years ago. I couldn’t stand having hair in my face; I ended up pulling my hair back in a ponytail all the time. I don’t have a particularly smooth forehead, it’s a little lumpy that occasionally looks Klingonesque in photos, so I got bangs. I think having a little side-swept bangs is nice and a few layers around my face tends to be a softer look. I’m currently working on growing out some rather short, bluntly cut bangs. It’s also tough when you’ve got a cowlick that defeats the way that blunt bangs should fall.

  24. I love mine. I have had bangs in some shape or form (short, long, thick, whispy) for at least 3 years. I wouldn’t feel right without them.

  25. i tried growing out my bangs, once. the longest was just enough to brush behind my ear. that length didn’t last. i’ve had em for about 10 years. it’s too easy for me to just trim my bangs in the bathroom, whenever i want. who knows- i may have em for another 10 ;)

Hi ladies, it seems as though no males have participated in this forum. Allow me to speak for the dudes: WE DONT LIKE BANGS. Your BF may say he likes your bangs but he is lying. I am only here to help. Please take this advice and use accordingly. Can you imagine how good Zoey would look without her bangs?? They are a handicap. You can thank me later.

  27. i have bangs and i love them! not sure if i should always wear them or grow them out though…but amen to zooey who will rock them forever

  28. This is the dilemma I am going through at the moment and it always comes down to an impulse, yes that I get them. I need more inspiration from the internet but am struggling to find them. I see more middle parts then bangs…

  29. Anonymous says...

not a fan of bangs. at all. most of the time, such as with zoey deschanel, the women look like they they want to look like they’re 6 years old.

  30. I love my side bangs and I even tried a full fringe for a bit! I wish mine were longer though…accidently cut em’ too short this time :/

  31. I have bangs and i love them, tho sometimes i have a bad-bangs-day.
I couldn’t be without bangs, cause it hides my huge forehead.

  32. When I started my freshman year of high school I decided to go for straight bangs… It took me about a year to regret it! Just not the right look for my face. I do love a dramatic haircut though!

  33. Joanna! You should try out bangs! I never thought the would look good on me either, but turns out they do! Also, they grow out quite fast, in a month they will be side-swept!

  34. Johanna says...

I did it yesterday, and i love it.
Big glasses and bangs, you can’t see my face any longer, but it’s really sweet.

  35. LOVE. I will never get rid of my bangs, they make even a ponytail look sexy. They also make you look like you have higher cheekbones!

  36. I *wish* I could do bangs! Unfortunately, I can’t.

  37. I just got bangs for the first time a couple of months ago. My hair was all even in length so it was a huge change. Verdict? They look cute but are so much more work. But I’m still happy I went for it.

    Loulou

  38. Everyone should try bangs at least once! I always get so annoyed with them and grow them out, but I miss how they frame my face!

  39. You know…

I had bangs about 6 years ago and it was awful. Yes, my hair is fine and straight- so it should have been perfect. And yes, I have an oval shaped face. All the right elements for a fringe. But I ended up looking like an 8 year old kid with straggly (and sometimes greasy) bangs. Gah! Took like a year to grow out enough that I could live with them.

Some how, my (former) hairdresser this year convinced me that bangs would be hot. She was right. Except the sweat I have pouring out from underneath them this summer is not.

I don’t know, some people love them on me, some people hate them, but in the end, I can’t deal with plastered greasy hair on my forehead, no matter how “young” and “fresh” they make me look.

Bangs in the fall? Sure, why not? Summer time + bangs = Hot Forehead Mess!

Ugh my love/hate relationship with bangs…
It all started when I saw a magazine cover of Naomi Campbell with bangs and long sexy hair when I was a teenager in the late 90s. So i copied the look and LOVED them! Wore it that way for awhile till I got sick of it but it was a pain in the butt to grow them back.
Fast forward to three years ago. I cut them, HATED them and grew them back out. They were longer so it was easy to hide them. I vowed never to cut bangs ever again.. Until I did earlier this year in February. This time it wasn’t so easy to hide as it was cut to a point where I had to commit to the look. I hate my bangs with a passion and now I’m at the odd mid length stage where I can’t hide it or wear it as bangs. Grrrrrrr!

  41. I thought the same thing, Joanna, but I went for it and was totally amazed. You should go for it! I’m growing them out right now and half-regretting it because I loved the bangs so much. :]

  42. I got bangs 3 months ago for the first time since I was little…apparently, I am a follower. :)

  43. I jumped on the bang bandwagon when I realized it meant I could hide my unruly german eyebrows.

  44. I’m growing my bangs out. its too hot in the summer for hair on your forehead. i love them too (in the fall/winter) but come spring i attempt to grow/push to the side. keep it in mind. 90 degrees and sweaty – bangs are not too cute!

  45. I’ve had bangs my whole life, and probably always will. I’ve tried growing them out, or wearing them away from my face and it just isn’t me –– I love my bangs :)

  46. I’ve had bangs on and off for years. Right now I’m in the middle of growing them out, but I love that first picture. Making me think of getting them trimmed again.

  47. I have had bangs since I was a child. I have grown them at all different lengths but blunt has always been the best!

  48. I’ve had bangs for a little over two years now? I don’t ever want to go back, they’re so convenient and I like the look a lot better! (it’s kind of bothersome to have to get them cut more frequently than you would otherwise, though.)

  49. Really? I feel like 2012 is the year everyone is growing their bangs out. Bangs have been in popular for at least five years in my opinion. Sorry, I think the New York Times got this wrong.

  50. I took the plunge and never looked back! I love my blunt bangs. And since I’ve always been enamoured by Jane Birkin’s hair style, I think I’ll be earing mine for a while.

  51. LOVE them! I have stick-straight, fine hair, so it is kind of the only way I can wear my hair right now. I think you would look ADORABLE with bangs!

  52. I’ve had bangs off and on. And for a while I had been getting really bad ones…so after a few years without them I decided to try them one last time and I LOVED them! For summer I let them grow out so I don’t have them on my face all the time, but I am definitely getting bangs for fall again! They’re beautiful!

  53. I had bangs, thick and Zooey-esque, from the time I was 15 until just after my 20th birthday. About a year ago, when I began growing them out and chopped off over a foot of hair! I felt like they would look strange with short hair and I wanted a new look. However, I’m always getting bang envy and have come close to going back multiple times. I loved them and I miss them but I like being bang-free for now. I love the ability that bangs have to add style without having to actually do anything to your hair.

  55. My former bangs and I had such a tumultuous love/hate relationship. For every “good” bang day, I had 5 bad bang days. The only thing worse than a bad bang day is a bad growing-out-bangs day. But, of course, Zooey looks amazing with bangs. She was probably born with bangs.

  56. Hi Jo, have you got a good hairdresser, she should be able to talk you through what bangs would suit you. For example I can’t have bangs straight across because my hair grows in such a way that part of it will always go to the side, so I keep mine as long side bangs, which makes me feel more comfortable than none at all.

I really love your long hair and think you look great without bangs anyway :) X

  58. I want to do anything Zooey Deschanel does.

  59. i have wanted bangs for a couple of years now…but stylist won’t let me have them! she says i’ll look like a korean dora the explorer…

  60. I have side swept bangs. I would love to have some thick ones, but my naturally curly hair won’t allow it.

  61. I have bangs that are on the short side. Right above my eyebrows! I think it’s most flattering and I don’t lose too much length this way.

  62. i think you should bite the bullet and go for it. they will grow back if you don’t like them! i personally think you will totally pull them off. and finally, the really short bang look is a definite don’t.

  63. I have side-swept bangs and LOVE them. I had straight across but think for a short time in college when they were in, but have been rocking the side-sweep ever since!

  64. I love bangs, and have cut mine short two times in the past two years. That said, I HATE growing out bangs. There are so many awkward, hair-in-your-face phases to go through. And I don’t care what people say–bobby pins don’t always cut it. Of course once I’ve grown them out I almost immediately want to cut them again…. Ah to be a girl.

  65. 2012 is decidedly the year of growing my bangs out!

  66. i have longer side bangs bc i think my forehead is too big without them :). i tried to do them shorter and they’re too big of a pain to do every day.

  67. I took the plunge about a month ago after becoming tired of my side swept bangs. I LOVE them. I think they look instantly sexy without overdoing it. Joanna, I think you would look stunning with bangs!

  68. I took the plunge about a month ago after becoming tired of my side swept bangs. I LOVE them. I think they look instantly sexy without overdoing it. Joanna, I think you would look stunning with bangs!

  69. I think they can work really well on some people if they have the right face shape, but for most others, it just makes grown women look like they are trying to look like little girls.

Also, I don’t feel like 2012 was a big year for bangs? I remember everyone was into them and cutting them back when I was in college 2-3 years ago, and now it seems like everyone is growing them out? Maybe I’m wrong? Maybe my friends are out of it? lol

  70. Love bangs! Except that I sweat profusely on my forehead… not cute. Go for it Jo!

  71. i have a love/hate thing with bangs. i have big forehead so i love them when they are trained, but sometimes i just can’t get them to work and i give up and do what i am doing now…letting them grow down to my chin and just tucking them behind my ears until i miss them and cut them again. it’s a neverending affair, me and bangs.

  72. I always have some form of a bang, currently I have side bangs but want Zooey Deschanel bangs again. On the other hand I have been thinking about a pixie like Michelle Williams but I am not sure I am that brave anymore…

  73. Anonymous says...

I had straight bangs with long hair, and I enjoyed the retro and feminine look. But now everyone has bangs and long hair! So I’m doing side-swept bangs with short hair. I still love the look, though.

  74. I am torn between bangs or no bangs and I have a haircut tomorrow-eek! Thing is, if i cut bangs i will be panicked about doing them every day (i have 2 major cowlicks right in front:S) and if i don’t i ‘ll be disappointed for not being more brave…and so the great hair battle rages on…:)

  75. I can never really get bangs to work out for me (because of my super curly hair, they take a lot of work), but I cut them about once a year anyway. I can’t help it! Every time I see a picture of Zooey I just fall in love and make an appointment at the salon. Sigh…

  76. Love them!
But because of my curly hair, I can’t have one… it is too much job!

  77. You can always buy some clip on bangs in different styles and try them out…

  78. I took the plunge and liked them while I was living in Europe last fall… then I came back to the midwest to find my bangs to be a ball of fuzz while I have super frizzy hair (ala Monica on Friends when they go to Barbados…) So I had to nix them. In humid, extremely hot areas, I can’t. Walking to class on campus with sweaty bangs is THE WORST.

But if I had perfect hair, rather than this puff of fluff, I’d so rock them.

They make you feel so confident and sexy! Well, if you aren’t me in Kansas… ; )
