Have you ever seen a Citra Sipper? You just stick it into an orange or grapefruit and drink! What a rad idea. Do you think it really works? (And the company is old-school: It was launched at the 1933 World’s Fair by the current owner’s grandfather.)
I grew up in FL in the 70s and we used these. I’d love to find them again!
Yes! Me too! Excited to purchase for my kids.
Where can I purchase these??
It is good method to take orange juice but I am happy with my brand juicer breville bje200xl. It is noise free juicer and its provide me the best quality juice.
Thanks for this new idea.

My mom decided she could stand to part with one of hers when I asked for it. We had them growing up and they were so fun, now my son is getting to fun out of it too! Best part is when you’ve gotten all he juice you can out of it, by that time the skin has split & you can just crack open the orange & eat the rest!

These were a staple of growing up when I lived in Florida as a kid…I think we had a Tupperware variation. They work fabulously, though I think you should definitely roll it around a bit first like Leigh-Anne suggested…it’s like sucking a shake if you don’t. ;)
OMG!! Totally had one of these when I was a kid! Is completely legit…works like a charm!
Haha! Love this:)
Haha! Love this:)
I’d completely forgotten about these, but my grandmother had them at her house in Florida when I was a kid. I hated to eat oranges, but LOVED to drink them through those little guy! So cool! Now I want one again.
They work brilliantly! We used them all the time as kids, the trick is to put the orange on the floor and roll it under you feet with a bit of pressure (not enough to split the skin though!), this pops all the juice cells inside releasing their deliciousness! THEN you stick in the sipper in and squeeze! We really used to enjoy them as kinds :)
I loved this so much I’m re-blogging it, with credit of course!
Yes! These do work! I, too, had one as a child and LOVED it. I’ve been keeping my out for them for a while now to no avail, so glad you posted it. You’ll have to give one a try!
I had one of these as a kid! They are so much fun – the only issue is that the pulp tends to clog things up. The best part is smushing the orange to get the juice going. What a fun find, Joanna!
omg I want that straw!!
i had them as a child. they KINDA worked, you wouldn’t get most of the juice out, but they were still fun.
There are peppermint candy straws that you can stick into oranges and the combined flavor is just fabulous.
Interesting idea i don’t know if this is going to work well.
I still prefer my juice in a glass

That’s very cool! I wonder if it would work for juicing lemons and limes for recipes?
What a great idea… But how much juice could you really get out of it? It’d be fun to try!
so cute!
I have something similar to the citrus sipper to extract lemon juice out of lemons. It is a cool invention for sure.
Oh My Gosh. This is so cool. This will make our life easier. No more squeezing and juicing oranges. lol
Omg. I want one!
here is the modern japanese version: http://www.geekologie.com/2012/02/magic-citrus-fruit-juicer-makes-juice-in.php
We had these as kids! I wonder where they ended up… Such a fun way to eat oranges!
Growing up, the end of the orange season was all about squeezy oranges, as kids we couldn’t wait for that time of the year to come fast enough. We never had such a device though, it was always just a case of rolling the orange hard on the bench top/driveway/table/hand etc to release the juice and then a circle cut of the top and a few digs of the knife into the flesh. If you were really good you would cut that circle out just right and the central pith would come out at the same time. Then you would just suck and squeeze away.
The only condition that my mother had was that you had to eat the orange afterwards. Which was normally achieved by just ripping down the peel from the sucking hole to create four or five “petals”.
I still eat oranges this way at the end of the season when they are really juicy. I find I make a lot less mess this way then segmenting the orange.
Such cute idea i love it No need to use juice extractor now
No way! Does this really work?
Want! Where could we find it?
In some of the countries in Africa I’ve lived in they do something similar – cut the very top off an orange and then drink. Because of the internal structure it takes quite a bit of kneading with our hands to release all the juice, but it’s definitely worth it! I guess this thing would work in a similar way…
LOL… Am so reminded of Joey (on FRIENDS) as the guy-who-can’t-open-the-milk-carton infomercial. They showed a similar product for milk cartons.
My mom bought a few on a family trip down to Florida and I think I’m the only one that enjoyed using them! They’re so much fun but so difficult to get all the juice out. The trick is to roll the orange around in your hands to get it a little gushy first.
i like that!! i wanna buy that..
Never tried it. Seems like a fantastic idea though! Especially with the warm weather!
We used to have those as kids! They were sold at a small orange stand by my grandparents place in Florida.

Ha! I totally had that as a kid growing up. I remember wanting it to work better than it did. It may depend on orange, but it was fun anyway. :)
I used to have whilst growing up in south africa, what a blast from the past!
ooo i am craving citrus right now
I remember when I was in elementary school we would try to jab our straws inside in the orange. Most of the time the straw broke, or we managed to get it in and got a total one sip, LOL!
I still use mine! I love it.
Mine was a big old fail.
I remember these commercials:)!!!

Omg- I have to try this! Imagine it with fresh grapefruit!
i grew up with these. i used to make huge sticky messes with them. i always seemed to get over zealous for the juice and split my orange.
This is so cool! I love the vintage packaging. I must try it!
Wow! A blast from the past. Our grandmother used to take a peppermint stick (old fashioned candy cane) and stick it in an orange for us. We would suck out the juice through the stick (or around it really) and the peppermint / orange juice combo was really tasty. Then after we had “juiced” the orange, we would peel it and eat it. Not the healthiest snack, but it sure was good!
If this actually works, it is genius. But what if you get one of those bum oranges that is all… dry? That would be sad.
I’m drinking a glass of lemonade right now and would love to be sipping from a real lemon!
Hmmm… yeah. This is perfect. I think these would be silly little gifts… but I may need one for myself. You know, to test it out! :)
I’m a Florida girl and there was always a big 10 pound bag of oranges and grapefruits on the porch. I grew up using these sippers and never really learned how to peel an orange because I simple didn’t have to! These sippers really work… you have to massage the orange in between every couple of sips but it’s no hassel.. they’re really nifty!
Haha this is pretty amazing! I’ve never seen anything similar!
Maria
I’m picturing a pile of dry, shriveled up orange carcasses after you’re all done with this.

These peppered my childhood.
love this!!! thanks for sharing, definitely getting one! (;
Funny you would mention this product. I searched all over the Internet a few years ago trying to find a place to buy them (found the same website you did). My parents used these as juicers growing up, and they’re surprisingly effective for being a small piece of plastic (especially if you zap the fruit in the microwave for a few seconds first).
This is so fantastic!!
i love those! i grew up in florida and they always sold em in the touristy shops but they worked great with a juicy orange – – and so fun!
This is too funny Joanna, I “won” something similar last year at Sears during a Christmas cooking demo. They were promoting it as a juicer, moreso for lemons and limes for drinks and cooking. You have to really roll and mash the fruit up, like, really beat it up before it works. It would be such a neat idea if it worked well wouldn’t it?
I live in California and they always give these away at the summer fairs, usually where they’re doing demonstraions for cookware. They’re great for all citrus, and I especially like them for cocktails. They give a nice fresh splash of lemon or lime.
I remember using them as a child…they were awesome!
You are taking me back. Every year for about 5 years my father would drive us to Florida (from Toronto) in the summer (yes, the summer!). I would buy one of these each year and still had one in my drawer till recently…where is that thing? Kids love this because they can squish up the orange until it is all flat and then tear it open and eat the dry pulp.
