I stumbled across this ad campaign this morning and can’t stop looking at it. I love it.
It can’t truly work, I think this way.
ball joint | personal injury compensation | party finger foods
that’s one happy baby :)
Why are the anti-breastfeeding (or pro-formula, maybe) women so hostile? Breastfeeding is so natural and lovely, and I don’t see how formula-fed babies have the bonding with their mother that breastfeeding provides. I just love the connection that breastfeeding gives me to my 10-week-old baby, it’s priceless.
Best nursing pads I know of are Lansinoh. I didn’t have too painful an experience – only the first few days really hurt. Leaving your breast milk to dry on you, or wearing the damp pads a bit will actually heal you up nicely and quickly. Amazing how nature works. My son is two weeks old and I love feeding him! It’s sweet and not truly all that hard… some days can be frustrating, but not all.
what a beautiful image. this is advertising at its best.
My first child had a bottle of milk at night for what seemed liked forever! I did try to wean him off it but then I discovered that actually it was only the bottle he liked and not really the milk. In fact, he flatly refused the milk unless it was in the bottle, he preferred to go without a drink at all. I let him carry on with it for a while as I really wanted him to have the calcium – but there came a point when I decided ‘no more’ and ever since he never drank milk unless it was with chocolate powder. Such a stubborn child – he still is the most stubborn person I know. My second son was the total opposite – he refused the bottle altogether as I breast fed him for too long.
Yup!
You’ll enjoy every moment of it! Bonding time with baby…
sweeeet..

I love this image! I am still breastfeeding my 19 month old and he loves it. thanks for sharing such a beautiful image.
Nice picture, but the latch is incorrect. I think the message would have been better with a correct latch.
Love this. I am b-feeding right now and it is heaven. I will miss it terribly when it’s over….such a special time for mama and bebe. Side note: I ADORE your new header…perfect! Enjoy your last month of pregnancy!
Beautiful. I love the sight of a woman nursing her baby, and when done discreetly cannot understand the fuss someone people see in it. Beautiful, motherly, caring, at one. I breastfed my two (still am with my youngest) and wouldn’t have it any other way.
I am breastfeeding My two week old beautiful little girl, now as I type ( thank goodness for iPhones) in bed, it’s 7 am here in sydney town and autumn has set in. This is my second child and I have found breastfeeding a challenge with both. I did continue till 18 months with my first, now have mastitis with my second. I really think that breastfeeding is one of the hardest challenges the modern woman faces, you need a lot of support from family, lactation consultants and hardwork. But so worth it!
i’m the minority here. that picture freaked me out! i’m all for breastfeeding if you can but i don’t want to watch other women stick their boob in their childs mouth.
if you can breastfeed, WONDERFUL! if you can’t, DON’T HATE YOURSELF! i breastfed for a month but my body just didn’t produce enough. my children ARE JUST FINE with formula and they aren’t overweight.
Adorable pic!! -I cant stop looking at it either- (Please LET my breasts look like that one when its my turn!)
:)
Well, that’s new! Ha! I feel bad for those moms who had trouble nursing because my experiences were so darn easy. And what a $ saver! I never had to buy formula! Plus, not having to heat, wash, store, buy baby bottles was a huge blessing.
Now that I’m almost 12 years out from my last breastfed-given meal, one of mine is a bit lower than the other, which I might attribute to b’feeding. And, seriously, I think they sag more in the end from it, but hey, that’s what good bras are for! I don’t think my husband notices at all, as long as the rest of me is in shape!
Just do one thing: make sure to get a good brand of those things you put in your bra to aoak up milk when you let-down and don’t mean to! Yikes! Breast milk accidentally soaking thru your t-shirt is so embarrassing! Wish I could remember the best brand, but it’s been too long!
NB: I did not meant that I was personally offended, just that if my boss walked by while I happened to be looking at the picture, I would be in troubs!
While I don’t personally care for it, this is an interesting ad, and I suspect that people will react to it based on how they already feel about breastfeeding. I don’t think this campaign is going to convince many people who would otherwise not breastfeed. (If that’s, indeed, the goal.)
yes, jo, i actually saw the Babies documentary the other day, and it was SOOOO good!
Wow, I realized I meant to type “shouldn’t” instead of “should” in my comment. Breastfeeding is great, but doesn’t work for everyone (I had inverted nipples, and my babies couldn’t latch, so I pumped to give them breast milk, supplemented with formula when needed). Plus, using the bottle gave my husband the chance to wake up for nighttime feedings and allowed him to bond with the kiddos. They are half of him, too, afterall! Whatever decision mothers make, THEIR way is the RIGHT way and no one should pressure them into doing something that doesn’t work for them. Best of luck to all the mommas (or soon to be) out there!
Gross. Inappropriate.
This photo also reminds me of the upcoming movie Babies – starring four adorable babies around the world and the families who love them. I can’t wait to see it! It sends the same message as this photo — babies don’t really need much more than what we instinctually provide them with warmth and love.
just wait till he’s looking up into your eyes and caressing your face with his little hands….sigh.
Hi Joanna! Congratulations on your pregnancy and thanks so much for prompting this debate! I’m nearly 21 weeks pregnant and reading up on lots of breastfeeding literature.
Its something I really want to do for my little one when the time comes, but at the same time I’m scared to bits that I won’t be able to! I’m definitely going to try though ;)
I love this image and I’m so happy you’re going to try to BF too:)
isn`t it just perfect? YES, it is…
so wonderful :)
I nursed both of my children, for 2 yrs both times. it’s incredible, loving, magical experience between you and your baby :)
all the best, keep up bringing wonderful things on this lovely site…which I read almost every day!
regards from croatia,
ana
this is so pretty! reminds you how life is such a miracle!
That’s a beautiful image Joanna.
You are so close to experiencing this magic yourself.
I’m so happy and excited for you! x
Wow! This photo is beautiful! Not always easy to breastfeed at first but definitely the best for your child and for you. Sometimes, people try to discourage you, thinking giving bottles are easier but it’s not!! It is so natural, don’t need bottles to sterilized or prepare. And these moments are so special. When you breastfeed and you baby looks into you eyes… best moments ever
Beautiful photograph.
Jo, I am so happy you posted this!!!!!
xo

I looked up this ad campaign on the net and eventually wrote about it and on my blog too: http://parentcoachsedef.blogspot.com/2010/05/mothers-day-and-more.html
WOW! Great ad! Thanks for sharing :) Breastmilk and nursing is the first best gift a mother can give to her chid……
I love it – it brings back such warm lovely feelings of when I breast fed my kids….! :)
In my mind, there is no separation between being the mother of a baby and breastfeeding. It’s how babies eat! It’s how mothers mother! I think everyone should PLAN to breastfeed and only not if something really gets in the way.
I’ve been reading your blog for a bit over a year now and am SO happy to see breastfeeding brought up! I nursed my son and now work as a breastfeeding peer counselor with the WIC program. I am also a La Leche League Leader, so I donate my free time to supporting breastfeeding moms. Breastfeeding is such an important part of mothering and I’m so excited for you!
Breastfeeding IS essential. It is the normal way to feed a baby and there are a lot of health risks that go along with formula feeding. However, no mother should feel guilty for not breastfeeding. She should feel angry that she didn’t have the support to make it work!
La Leche League is such a great organization, I hope you can find a group in your area and maybe attend a meeting before your bouncing baby boy arrives! You’re going to be such a fantastic mom!
Hopefully this extremely long comment makes up for the fact that i’m usually lurking. :)
I’m sorry, but while I love kids and agree that breastfeeding is definately the best for the child in every way, I REALLY don’t like this ad. I just really feel that it is a personal and wonderful thing to do in private with your child, not an image to blow up to poster size and plaster across the internet.
Gotta say a couple things:
-Why would they use such a hideous latch? It’s so distracting. Did they want the breast to be that shape for some reason? I am disappointed because I think they were trying for “breastfeeding-light”.
-also, babies gaze at their mommies the same way on the bottle. I breastfed my first two, but it didn’t work out for the third, so we’re doing the bottle. It’s okay. Thank God there’s good formula.
-Awesome post/ad in general.
Um…no. Am I the only person who is totally skeeved out by this? And I really do love kids, and want my own. And I’ll probably breastfeed, but I really don’t relish seeing someone else’s boob in someeone else’s kid’s mouth.
I’m just saying.
I love the intent of the ad and really want to love the photo, but it makes me think “ouch!”. As someone who found the first few weeks of breastfeeding incredibly painful (but stuck with it and was rewarded for ten lovely months), all I can think is, “let’s call the lactation consultant to help with that latch.” Such a wonderful sentiment though.
I’m still amazed that people consider breastfeeding a “choice”. When did people forget we are animals, and mammals to boot?
I can’t wait to breastfeed. My mother breastfed me a LOT longer than is “socially acceptable” and she and I have a very healthy, yet very close relationship. I’m sure those early moments had something to do with it.
i love this ad!!! and they really do stare at you with glowing expressions :) best of luck to you!!!
Beautiful! I breastfed both my daughters–one for 13 months and my youngest for 10 months (she self.weaned) It was an absolutely amazing experience, so thankful I was able to do it so easily and really enjoy my babies and provide for them in this way.
Ridiculously broody at the moment, and this certainly added to the vibe. That baby is beyond beautiful!
“essential”? giving women information about breastfeeding being good for a baby and propaganda about breastfeeding being the *only* healthy and responsible choice are two very different things. There is no justification for people putting pressure on women to breastfeed and spreading inaccurate information. Women should be supportive of each other’s choices, not judgmental.
he! he! i’m glad someone else brought up the improper latch and not me! that one would definately curl your toes.
joanna, I tell every mom to take it in threes. if you can get past the first three days, try for three weeks. after three weeks, keep at it for three months. if you can manage that, you will know why it is worthwhile and one of the most wonderful things you can do with your child!
no too long now!
happy breastfeeding!
This picture is absolutely stunning, those sweet little eyes!!! Im a nurse so the pressure of breastfeeding was on for me!! as you can see it can be a dividing subject just by this flurry of responses!!! Please don’t feel pressure, most importantly and when it comes to mothering, know everyone has a differing opinion and will offer it, your heart will lead you.
Our nursing experience was good, it took some adjusting then I couldn’t get him to stop!! He’s now through and still calls them “milkies”!!!
I appreciate how important and wonderful breastfeeding is for both moms and babies, and I absolutely support the cause, but…no. This is a little much.
I love this. In the US we are so paranoid about nudity and censorship, but this is real, it’s life and it’s beautiful.
*no weight issues (but typing issues apparently!)
keri – it’s not ESSENTIAL for development (i was adopted & never breast-feed… & i turned out just fine with weight issues).
this is a wonderful and eye-catching ad! i love the whole concept of the campaign. thanks for sharing, jo!
What a fantastic ad. Breastfeeding my daughter has been one of the most delightful (yes, at times challenging) and important experiences of my life. It has bonded us, provided her with real attachment and made parenting through illness, hurts, scares and tantrums a billion times easier. Oh, and travelling is a breeze, just have to lift up your shirt. And the health benefits for her, and for me – these are incredible and last a lifetime. Yet 8 days after she was born, as committed as I was to the idea, I almost quit. I was just so tired, I had not slept 3 hours in a row since she was born. A doula and lactaction consultant nearby came to help, rocked her for 3 hours so my husband and I could sleep, and when I woke up, I knew I needed to learn, with her, how to do this incredibly important thing.
Totally SFW. Nursing my son as i type with one hand…beautiful.
What a beautiful image. I truly adore it! I have been loving your “almost-mamma” posts so very much… They’re so sweet and heartfelt. Let’s do that lunch or cup of tea soon! I’ll be doing a faux engagement shoot at Jefferson Market Gardens soon – would love for you to pop by. I’ll email you soon!
xx

very beautiful picture. but that’s a bad latch!!
You can tell you’re nesting Joanna! I work as a neonatal nurse on a labor and delivery unit so I help a lot of woman breastfeed their babies… Beautiful picture!
Love your blog… I am just getting started blogging and would love some followers! Thanks! :)
Ditto to Celeste – “ouch!!!” NOT a correct latch. :) after breastfeeding two, that pic is beautiful of the baby, but makes me cringe because sore nipples from a baby pulling like that are excruciating! but i am totally pro-breastfeeding – super cheap, super convenient, a terrific bonding time and extremely healthy for your little one.
no one tells you how hard it is, but it’s completely and utterly worth it. (the nurse will help you but i found it more frustrating when people tried to help. i snuck it in when no one was around and baby seemed to do much better!)
i didn’t realize how much i would love it. after losing my first baby, i longed to nurse. and now my 2nd baby is almost a year, it’s hard to consider stopping! i never thought i would make it to a year, let alone consider going past it!! something so beautiful about it. and don’t get me started on the health benefits! while many women run into issues in the nursing department–if you’re able, i say congrats! (: it’s awesome.
This makes me miss breast feeding my son. (He’s 13 months now, I made it a year!) So natural and beautiful. Thanks for sharing!
It really is the baby’s expression that says it all. Absolutely beautiful. The only reason why this picture may be appalling to some is because the breast (especially in our society) is perceived as more sexual rather than functional. If people were to go to another country (like the Dominican Republic)they’d see boobs hangin’ out all over the place purely for the purpose of breastfeeding (some of those kids are breastfed until they’re 6). Personally, I think breastfeeding absolutely beautiful. Congrats on your baby (coming soon) and good luck with the feeding :)
love it. I could only breastfeed for 3 months as my son decided he wanted the bottle. It’s amazing how head strong babies can be. He is now 7 months I has to hold his own bottle (so funny). I think if you can do it, you should and give your baby the best, plus the bonding is priceless. Great post x
ok i know everyone else is getting all psyched on this
but its freaking me outs
I love this add and think breastfeeding is the most wonderful feeling. My little bub is 12 weeks old today and I love every minute of nursing him. But as natural as it is today, breastfeeding did not come naturally. I have several friends who have unfortunately been unable to breastfeed because they did not have the necessary support. These “breast is best” campaigns are great but they do make my friends feel guilty for not succeeding. I most certainly felt the pressure to have to master breastfeeding or else I’d be a disappointment. You can read more about it on my blog: http://smallesthings.blogspot.com/search/label/breastfeeding
Beautiful! Best give you could possibly give your baby :)
Amazing picture. I love the look on the infant’s face. Thanks for sharing.
Whoa baby (or should I say booby! Just kidding!!!)
This picture is very interesting!
Cheers for sharing…I need to turn my sister Mary who is having a boy in June on to your blog!!!
Hope :) xx
Ah! How cute!
Very sweet. I know Israel LOVES to nurse, it’s his little portable happy place!
So excited for you Joanna!
melissa, thank you so much! we just got a “my brest friend” but thank you SO much for your sweet offer. and em, i will probably take you up on that, big hello to henry! :)
props to everyone who stuck with breastfeeding! i know it can be super hard, but it is so worth it!
but for sure, this is a super incorrect latch! i hope people don’t think this is the proper method. :)
It is wonderful, isn’t it. I breastfed both of my girls and the only regret I had was that I didn’t get to breastfeed them any longer than I did. I went back to work after 12 weeks with both. Breastfeeding came easily to both, but pumping was another story. It is a wonderful experience and it’s the ultimate in cuddle time with the little one.
gorgeous ad!! like so many have pointed out, breastfeeding is a beautiful natural thing, but it doesn’t come naturally to everyone. with both my babes (3 1/2 and 10 weeks old, respectively) i’ve put in long hours of booby bootcamp and it does pay off! just don’t give up, don’t hesitate to ask for help, and let yourself cry about it as often as you need to! good luck joanna!
