Artist Pete Dungey plants gardens in the potholes on British roads. “If we planted one of these in every hole,” he says, “it would be a like forest in the road.”
I love this, so cool!!
Really cool but totally impractical, of course. Plus, the roots of plants will only cause MORE cracking and potholes. But they look pretty!
Thanks for posting everyone should be planting garden. there is nothing tastier and fresher than locally grown food.
Thanks so much for the post, very helpful info.

That is beautiful. It is like saying that even though there might be bumps in the road, beautiful things and growth may come of those hard times.
Wonderful post.
Just love it.

Nice post! Thanks for sharing!

wow,
if we planted one of these in every hole in indonesia the entire country would be a jungle
gotta love those quirky brits, ahem
How brilliant. What a beautiful expression of optimism! And if it maybe draws some attention to the poor state of the roads, so much the better. :)
This is beautiful, but how does he keep them alive?
Magnificent. How awesome that would be to see!
what a lovely idea.
Great idea! But I think he doesn’t know italian roads and their potholes…
Genius. Wouldn’t it be great if every blight in life was rectified with such cleverness and beauty??
I love it! I’m afraid they’d get destroyed but it does brighten them up and help drivers avoid them!
First of all, Diana, you worry too much. Second of all, I can see accidents happening too, but people swerve to avoid animals, so it’s going to happen anyhow.
Third, I’m doing this to two potholes in my driveway! Hahaha! We’ve always thought it would be quaint to have a drive with tall grass growing down the center…why not some hardy little flowers in the holes?
The only drawback is that they also serve as wonderful birdbaths…
I love it, but… I think I would find myself swerving to not run over the flowers. I see accidents.
But it does look absolutely gorgeous. :)
oh my goodness. favorite post of the week. love it!
What a delightful surprise.
These are so cool!
He would have his work cut out for him in Manhattan…but it would be quite the site
How inspiring!
oh what a nice post! i love this idea!
This is amazing. It reminds me of that famous photo where a hippy placed a flower in a soldier’s gun.
this is genius!
i can’t even tell you how many potholes i go over in one day. some you just can’t avoid. my poor tires…
i’m sure the rude people here would drive right over those beauties. and then i would have to punch them in the face. hahaha.
:)
amazing!
This really takes the aggravation out of seeing a pothole and swirving to miss it – now you will miss crushing beautiful flowers! Brilliant.
That is so cool, I love it!
adorable! i can just imagine all the drivers swerving out of their paths to avoid them..
ah that’s lovely- have you heard about the urban gardeners too who go and just plant flowers etc in sad little unused parts cities- fun.
British roads have LOTS of pot holes so this chap will be busy
I love this idea!
That is beautiful. It is like saying that even though there might be bumps in the road, beautiful things and growth may come of those hard times.
love it.
Beautiful &brilliant :)
How darling to come across one of these. Really made me smile!
Karena
they won’t last long I guess as far as I know the British car drivers :)but a really nice idea!
Oh what a cute idea! I hope I see one of these someday.
Oh my gosh I love that! If only you could rely on motorists not to run them over :(
such a lovely idea!
I’ve always wanted to fill potholes with play-doh :)
id like a few of these in san francisco please…not at all practical but cool the same
EEEEP! I love it – what a totally cool idea!
How cool!
This is one of those ideas that sounds sweet but isn’t all that thought out–like the idea to leave random little toys around for kids to find or mail letters to everyone in your village. I’m not a party pooper, but I think some old people might think it was an animal in the road in the dark and swerve and crash or something. And kids finding random toys might scare parents. And old people getting random mail might scare old people. Not to mention that when they do eventually repair these potholes, the workers are going to have more work to do to clean it out. And the random toys left around for kids is just more litter blowing around–just like a school releasing balloons to celebrate something is just more sea birds choking. There are plenty of happy cheerful artistic things to do that don’t involve old people dying or birds choking. I’m just worried about the old people!
oh my what a sweet little surprise!
this cracks me up. LOVE it!
I just love this…how beautiful.
such a neat idea to bring some sweetness to an otherwise annoying bump in the road. though, i’d be heartbroken to see these gorgeous little gems driven over!
What a beautiful idea! I could plant one right outside my house!
Awwww.
perhaps i’ll start doing that in hawaii! the roads out here are terrible and could definitely use something delightfully cheery!
beautiful!
I love that idea. The world needs more gardens.
so sweet… i hope they don’t get run over!
this is such a charming idea. Although I do not like the idea of a car running over them!
Love it!
Good Gosh! If Detroit did this we’d have gardens EVERYWHERE. Which would be lovely of course.
I’m fixin’ the holes….
well, The Beatles…I’m not, but the song works…smiles.
Awesome!
In theory this is lovely, but wouldn’t that cause accidents if people swerved to miss the flowers? I’d also feel really, really bad if I were a driver and ran them over.
Fantastic. I love finding beauty in unexpected places. But how long would the flowers live, in a sea of cars?
This is so lovely! Such a cool idea.
oh my god, that’s so fantastic! I absolutely love it! The road I take to get to school is plagued with so many potholes, and it just gets worse in the winter with all the rain. I’m inspired to do this just to make my daily commute a little brighter :)
That’s so cool, though don’t potholes appear where the tires are suppose to drive over? Everyone would be constantly swerving, which would actually look pretty nice now that I think about it. Cars dancing in a sea of flowers… aww
