I’d love to ask for your advice: Do you think it’s worth hiring a videographer for your wedding? I like these Super 8 videos! Thank you so much, my lovelies. xoxo
I am in love with this place, really awesome location for the photographers. Surely paradise for pictures.
Wow so sweet, this is the day that every couple need not forget on their entire life, I like this blog because it talks about wedding videographer.

hi..Its looking funny…I really enjoy it..I think video photographer are smart as they capture exact action..Thanks a lot for sharing..
At first I wasn’t going to have a wedding videographer to cut costs, but after meeting Julian Mackler who created the most amazing engagement video for us, I knew I just had to have a wedding video as well. He and his team are a fantastic group of guys that you would want to invite to your wedding anyway! All my guests afterwords raved about them and once they saw the pictures they were blown away, I can’t wait to see my wedding video. I HIGHLY recommend him, the name of his company is Mackler Studios. Here is the link to the engagement video he created for us, it’s incredible, it looks like a professional music video: http://vimeo.com/macklerstudios/mystic
And here is a link to our wedding photos which were also shot by him and his team, http://www.mackive.com/updike

When my wife and I got married, a videographer was highly recommended, and the main reason is to keep the memory of your wedding alive. My wife and I watch our wedding video every year on our anniversary, and it’s one small way that we can renew our vows together. The idea of having a wedding video was always very important to us, but unfortunately we had to have our DVD’s re-edited twice for content and playback. As a result, my wife and I have now started our own Wisconsin Wedding Videography Company, so obviously we’re a little bias now, but speaking just from our own experience, we would absolutely hire someone for videography services if we got married all over again.

Beautiful as usual; love this site.
Ok, I see a lot of people here are anti-videographer. But take into account that your nephew or cousin is not going to have the equipment to capture the quality sound that is very important in video production. That is one of the main purposes to have a video in the first place! To capture the audio. If you have a professional videographer, they can attach a wireless microphone to the couple and it will sound amazing. Everything from the cute things the couple says to each other before taking their vows, as well as the vows themselves will be captured. Very worth the investment. Your kids, your grandkids, and your great-grandkids are going to think you were “so 20th century” when you didn’t have your wedding video taped. And now the video can even be placed online and password protected. All of the people who were not in attendance at the wedding will be able to watch it then. Photography is great, but it isn’t going to capture the moment like a video. I passionately recommend it.
Hi Jo, I’m from Brazil and a big fan of your blog. I and my furure sister in law are getting inspired to do hers wedding plans…
By the way, I really think it is important to make a beautiful video of the wedding becouse my kids (I’m already 13 years married) enjoy so much wachting it!
Wedding Videos aren’t the same ol’ think you might remember. Get a low-key videographer (I have seen a 2 videographer team ruin a wedding because they were always blocking the view… a good team will be on the sidelines and get the shot with zoom, etc.). Most offer more documentary style or reality show style. Some even do super8, but you can achieve really artsy shots without it. DO NOT just have a friend do it. You’ll look at it and think “I’m so glad we didn’t pay” because it’ll be crappy.
Seriously. Just meet with some guys. Listen to Joel Peregrine’s post. I’ve seen his work and it is great. And don’t just think “we’ll never watch it”. Maybe not for a couple of years, but on your 10th anniversary? What about your kids and your grandkids? They’ll get to connect with you through watching you at your happiest… they’ll get your voice, your mannerisms, your love. Pictures are great, don’t get me wrong. I wouldn’t go without a good photographer. But think of the overall cost of the wedding… is another 2k going to break the bank? It IS worth it.
Remember, today’s video is not that of your parents or even your friends from 10 years ago. And don’t do it for how you feel now, but for what you might want later and what you might regret not having to show family, and even to remember that family that won’t be around in 20 or 30 years.
Quite honestly I think you prefer the super8 film-look because its different, not because its better at conveying the emotion of the day. Try to keep an open mind, look around, and find out what is available. We’ve come a long way from the ‘wedding video’ of even just a few years ago…

As a wedding photographer ( as well as portrait, documentary ), I would say NO, when I work as a wedding photographer I use a combination of my style and the brides ( sometimes the groom too ). It becomes a collaberation especially as you have such a style of your own. I don’t know how that would translate on video 8 , also you will get so busy, I would concentrate on getting the coolest photographer you can and stick with that

i cherish our wedding film. we had it done by Paper Tape Films using 8mm. beautifully edited to music we love. watch sample fims at papertapefilms.com and fiftyfootfilms (same company) and the tissues ready.
SO WORTH IT
Oh my, I’m not sure that I ever let you know when I published the post answering reader questions, one of which was lovely yours, asking about videographers. Here is a link, just in case you didn’t see it, although you’ve had lots of wonderful advice from your readers (as always!)
i certainly did hire a videographer. my reasoning was simple. my parents didnt have a wedding video. when i was young (and even now!) I so wished i could have watched them get married and have fun with their friends when they were younger. I want to be able to give my children that.
I never thought I’d want one, but this same day edit from Still Motion is making me reconsider…
Our wedding video was the best thing ever. We watched it way more times than looking at our pictures; and it was way cheaper than our photographer! I’d recommend it – you may not realize it now, but it’s fully worth it.
The 8MM is a superb idea, my husband and I wanted to do this but couldn’t find a place to rent any from. The other suggestion I would make is to take a peak at the work of Films by Francesco…this husband and wife team are ridiculously talented. Good luck!
I do I do. But they have to be good – and old timey, you don’t need sound, IMO. There is a lot of cheese out there and I’d try to avoid it. I didn’t have one and I really am bummed. I made a collage of my pictures on One True Media – because I am computer retarded – but it’s not the same as actual footage of the day. Do it!
soooo worth it to have one, but don’t pay a lot – even get a friend to do it (I’ll do it if you invite me!). we spent little – the quality is ok but we don’t watch it much…when we do we still get teary. use your money on a great photographer.
The Super 8’s are so special, I would choose to have friends film over a videographer. It seems so much more personal. Lovely idea!
My friend Sarah’s videographer was amazing! Here is his link
http://vimeo.com/2356309
it’s only worth it if you get a REALLY good one! i hired mason jar films and he was amazing! i love my wedding documentary…it’s only 10 minutes (although i also have all the raw footage) and husband and i watch it every anniversary…it’s absolutely perfect-capturing the true feel/emotion and of course, hilarious dance move of my relatives…photos just aren’t the same…although i LOVED my photographer too…shout out to kym from f8studio!
Joanna, please don’t forget that Super 8 cameras don’t record any sound (pardon my English – I’m Brazilian), so if you want to keep record of the couple saying “I do”, the funny things your friends say, the music etc… it might not be worth it. :-/
Also, if you rent a Super 8 cam you’ll need someone to change the rolls – I think 1 roll can record only about 10 mins! (but of course I could be wrong)
Probably the coolest thing you can do is giving a regular cam to someone who has never shot anything in his life, so that it looks amateur and homey. Wedding videos can be a little cheesy, but that’s because videographers are usually too familiar with framing. :)
Sorry, I have to be irreverent. Only film your wedding if you’re built like Bianca Jagger!
Our videographer was possibly not as thoughtful as a friend might be. We didn’t get certain portions of our reception that would have been wonderful to have on film. My vote is on Super 8 via thoughtful friend (um… type-A personality at that). Good Luck!
My husband and I had a videographer and I believe that it was money well spent…we watch it every year and were able to give it to friends and family overseas that were unable to attend!
Like the Super 8 idea. We didn’t go for a videographer and instead spent the money on an incredible photographer. She took beautiful photos and to this day, we get so many compliments on how unique and gorgeous they were. I have never regretted not having the video – the pictures captured the day perfectly.
If you’re talking super 8, definitely go for it! Whether you hire someone or have friends do it, it’s 100% worth it. I gush over my friends super 8 wedding films.
You may not look at it that often now, but 10 – 20 years from now you’ll want to look back at what you were like when you were “kids”. (This is advice from my mother to me when I was debating a videographer)
But I am not a fan of traditional video. The vintage, artistic aspect of super 8 is amazing!

A film-school friend shot Super 8 for us…
I think it’s so crazy that people are saying video can ruin memories. Honestly, my wedding day went by SOOOO fast and if it wasn’t for video, I wouldn’t even be able to remember some things. I definitely like the idea of having friends pass around a camera, or at least finding the right pro person who will be in the background and not be a bother. Video is really fun and even little snippets from the day will be cool to watch later. I can’t imagine someone not wanting to watch their wedding at least once in the years to come.
You know what I really wish I’d video taped? My rehearsal dinner. Even just a camera set up with a wide angle. All of our best friends in the world being both funny and touching. Even as it was happening I was wishing we were capturing.
Watched ours twice in 5 years! And think it was a lovely idea.
I was unable to make it to a friend’s wedding last year and I was thrilled to receive a copy of the DVD.
Having said that, though, I watched it once. Her mom watched it once. The happy couple? They have still never watched it.
I splurged on the photography and found someone on Craiglist to do the videotaping for cheap. It was my preference to have really artistic, beautiful photos. I’ve watched the video a couple times in the past year and it’s nice to have, but people are consistently “wowed” by wedding photos.
Please, please, please watch this video and i promise you will want one! The film above is lovely but this one is truily amazing! I found it a couple of months ago and watch it all the time because it is so beautiful.

I am pro photo, anti-video EXCEPT when it comes to Super 8. It’s the only way a wedding video should be a shot.
Brian and I just had a friend do the videoing. I think videos are important though, because they capture things you wouldn’t have noticed.
And man, that girl in the pic’s boob is so about to pop out!
No.
Few things are more tiresome than watching a wedding DVD, whether it’s your own or someone else’s.
It depends on the type or person you get. I’ve seen it done poorly, but our videographer is incredibly talented and creative, and he even created an awesome video of the ceremony (during dinner) to show at the reception.
Here’s the link: http://canavp.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html. It’s called “Dave and Lindsay Preview Movie.”
My initial reaction was no, but after thinking for a little bit, I’m undecided. No because things are remembered a certain way and I feel like having videos (and even photography to a certain extent) can ruin the memories. But then again, it would be nice in 10, 25, 50 years to be able to look back on the video. But I agree- no professionals. I think the friends filming would be the most meaningful and capture the best memories.
If you have extra cash lying around – go for it. I think you’ll like it. But if it isn’t a priority and you’re out of cash (and you’ll have great photographs) forget it. I was just posting about wedding budgets today and…if you’re debating it, it probably isn’t a priority.
we didn’t have one and I’m not sad. Love the idea of having a friend hold a super 8 – will give you the authentic shaky feel!
caroline, i LOVE YOUR VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!
We had multiple friends video our wedding and it has been almost three years and we haven’t watched any of them. Pictures? Still on display, still get looked at, still very much in action. DVDs? Not so much.
Love Chelsea’s idea and thought-if it is someone you know, and they know a lot of people there it will so capture you and not be intrusive if you love the idea of super 8 it could be really cool and fun.
I also just love photography, so we did not do any video-most of all black and white a friend of ours Jo Manolis who is a great photographer did ours and captured everything ( from the week and early morning hours in an amazing way. )
Have a look www.http://joannmanolisphotography.wordpress.com/2007/11/08/amy-and-scotts-kauai-wedding/
we used 3 super8 cameras and let a few friends pass them around, and edited it into a little mini-movie, it was so much fun! the only downside is that the cameras are noisier than cameras nowadays, so people said you could kinda hear them during the ceremony, but i dont remember hearing them at all! here’s the end result:

Not sure why I showed up as anonymous. Didn’t mean to be. Sorry! ~Melissa
I agree that its not worth it to pay someone. Video can be weird…and can start to take over the beautiful memories in your mind after watching it a few times… or even highlight little snafus you’d rather forget. If you want moving pictures, I love the super8 idea, and keep it short! Could also be cute to do morning-of interviews with people, but really, I discourage any videotaping of the ceremony.
I definitely think it is worth it!!
April 30th will be my 15th wedding anniversary ~~ It goes so fast! You want to always have the video for your memories, and for your children to view someday :)
I am going against the grain to say that, yes, you should have your wedding videotaped. My best friend and her husband taped mine and I have watched it a few times since being married almost 5 years ago. The day goes by so quickly and there are little pieces that you could miss. The only drawback was seeing some things that I wished I should have missed. Overall, though, I am glad I have my video.
I’ve never been married, so i don’t know if it’s worth it. I do have a friend who’s a photographer, and does video for weddings on the the side. I like his work, and I think his prices are pretty reasonable. Check him out!

Love your blog by the way!! :)

I too am anti-videographer… We wanted to invest in our photographs, for me, they’re much more touching & memeorable.
I’ve gotten a few custom framed for myself & my family, so we actually see them every day, not to mention the FABULOUS album my photographer designed for us… it’s so much better than a video!
thank you thank you, this is so helpful!
we had one…but it was for a reason {someone is doing a doc about my partner}…she was awesome…i *never* saw her the entire day…she was always very low key and NOT in our faces {my experience was very different from e’s above!}. that said, she was a friend and very respectful. she made us a *great* little dvd and it was really nice to have.
maybe find friends of a friend or try craigslist? super 8 is a great idea…also maybe look for documentary filmmakers or reality *instead* of a wedding service…a doc or reality shooter is *used* to being in the background…
if i think of any ny based shooters, i’ll let you know!!
I second the super 8 idea. You can get super 8 stock pretty cheap and have it put on to a DVD for cutting and make such a cool piece to remember the highlights. 5-10 minutes tops. Just so you can see everything and it looks so rad.
You can find old cameras for so cheap and anyone can shoot it. Unless it is a low light thing than I would say no. But yeah the first comment was a great suggestion.
Cole and I had a friend tape our wedding and we have never seen the tape :) haha our anniversary is Sunday maybe we will watch it.
Personally, I’m anti-wedding-video. The memories in your mind and the artful photos are much better than the real, live action thing.
No, I don’t think it’s worth it. I went to a wedding, and mind you you migth find a much better videographer, but these people were just in your face the whole time. It was awful. They ruined the whole thing – for me at least and I wasn’t even part of the wedding. I was just a guest!
I couldn’t even see the two people getting married because the videographer was standing in front of them the ENTIRE TIME (their wedding photographers were equally annoying too, so maybe it was just an unfortunate deal in finding these two teams)!! It was very distracting…
I think if you just get a video camera and give it to a teenager/or just a friend that’s good enough! Let them get what they can catch – it would be more personal, and I think they would have fun with it!
i’m obviously not married yet, but i think it might be a waste. if you have enough beautiful pictures, you can put them into a slideshow of sorts with music. i just can’t imagine ever watching the video again.
Find a friend or photographer to take super 8!!
Last weekend, I laughed out loud...
Last week, Anton, his friend Nick, and I were very excited to head to the Florida Keys...
Closing the Museum of Me?!?! I don't think so.
