This composite image shows how Manhattan looked in 1609 versus today. How nuts is that? Damn, it’s a big city.

It looks quite lovely. I live in washington state and love to visit NY. NY is a nice place to visit….seattle is a great place to live. I really enjoy your blog
Sweet blog! I wish Manhattan actually looked like this today, half & half. I know lots of people who would have stayed if it did.
From wikipedia. Early in the nineteenth century, landfill was used to expand Lower Manhattan from the natural Hudson shoreline at Greenwich Street to West Street.[45] When building the World Trade Center, 1.2 million cubic yards (917,000 m³) of material was excavated from the site.[46] Rather than dumping the spoil at sea or in landfills, the fill material was used to expand the Manhattan shoreline across West Street, creating Battery Park City.[47] The result was a 700 foot (210 m) extension into the river, running six blocks or 1,484 feet (450 m), covering 92 acres (370,000 m2), providing a 1.2 mile (1.9 km) riverfront esplanade and over 30 acres (120,000 m2) of parks.[48]
That’s *NOTHING*… maybe 1/32 of a sq. mile. which is approximately 1/1000 of manhattans land area if my mental calculation is correct.
Hey 12:23… you’re wrong. a teeny bit of manhattan’s downtown may have been “created”, but certainly not more that a few percent of its 26 sq. miles…
What’s sad is my ancestors traded 100 acres, which is where Broadway and Canal street is now, for a farm in New Jersey in the late 1700s. If only…..
Interesting piece. Maybe we should go back to the way things were!
Manhattan was created/reclaimed out of the Hudson…it was not there in 1609. So even though it looks neat, it is not historically accurate
this is amazing!
what an amazing image. almost hard to believe. still haven’t been to Manhattan, but I am dying to go! one day… one day…
p.s. I love your blogs!
that is crazy indeed… but remember, amid all that gray of the city, the carbon footprint of city dwellers is much smaller than that of most suburb/country dwellers (taking into account particularly driving/shipping)…
Wow…that is crazy to see.
That is… well .. CRAZY! It looks so different. As much as I love nature – I love the city!
wow! but i have to say i am not surprised, i bet a lot of big cities look like that in before and after! in vancouver for instance, just in december they cut all the big trees that stood on granville street (which is our main entertainment street in dowtown vancouver)! it looks so bare now, and why did they do it? they thought it looked too dark with the trees on the street! craziness!
Someday I’ll visit, until then thanks for sharing the pic.
I’m not sure it’s so sad- try living in an uninhabited forest for a few days and see how that goes ;) Cities are just progress. Granted, they could be a little bit cleaner, but I’m not rushing out to live alone in the wilderness anytime soon.
I’ve only been to Manhattan once (and eeps, didn’t like it very much) but I still couldn’t think of it as being anything other than a big city.
Oh, wow! What a huge change!
I’m not sure how sad it is… you can find the greenery fewer than 25 miles north, no? When you go to the wilderness, it is always so shocking how nobody is there. There is UNLIMITED wilderness out there if you want it.
Crazy!
I agree with Kari (2nd comment). Amazing and a little bit sad…
I read an article a way back that said much of that leveling (as someone mentioned above) was done with LANDFILL!
Sounds gross at first but when you figure they made living space out of refuse, it doesn’t sound so bad.
That’s really incredible.
I wonder what Dubai would look like just 5 years ago – freaky x
Wow wee! Mind boggling.
what a difference a few 100 years make
Yup, we’re eating up all the green aren’t we.
Did you ever watch the show New Amsterdam? The premise, just so you understand is that this man was immortal since the 1600s. It got cancelled early on. But before it did, there was this one episode where it shows him chronicleing {sp?} Times Square on his eighteenth century camera. And the theme song, too, had a morphing picture of the island. Very creative. I’ll try to find it and post for you.
That is fantastic to see them side by side! Wow. Thanks for sharing.
That is amazing. Kind of like the best of both worlds. We want the city and yet want the greenery. What would have been great back when Manhattan was first developed if city planners kept a bunch of that lush greenery in, and then in turn if we actually took care of it so it would flourish.
I see a lot of places where they keep the greenery, but out of laziness, we all let it die anyway, or we make it ugly with all our trash.
Makes ya think. Thanks for sharing!
I love them both! Can’t we have both of them?
Wow!! I’d love to see the US like that – then and now.
that’s really intense…all that sleet gray is rather depressing.
Wow, look at that. It makes me kind of sad.
Wow. That’s really cool. Look at all that green.
Wow! Imagine what the whole world looked like. But that is Manhattan-the concrete jungle.
there was this documentary on the history channel on manhattan in the 1800s…it was marsh and farmland! wild. they actually had to “level” the land in order to build the grid/midtown.
Manhattan is a great place, but that green looks so lovely…
I LOVE how it was back then…amazing! It is a damn big city!;) Nice picture!
That’s amazing. Also, a little sad.
look at all that green, wow!
