Giulia- thanks so much for the tips! my mom sent me Roxanne Roberts article too and I have committed its advice and yours to memory.
I’m going to wear an old hot pink coat that I don’t care if I lose to avoid a coat check crisis, and I’ve got my flats ready to go (haven’t decided on a dress yet!) and we’ve got dinner reservations.
I figure that an inaugural ball is the sort of event where you have to make your own fun and the kind of thing a person does once. But I am so happy that this is the one I am going to!

Moi again. Here’s Roxanne’s tipsheet.
If it’s not in there, remember: people will see you from the waist up. So fabulous earrings, necklace, scarves:), & so on have great impact vs. new fancy dress that, frankly, no one, no one will notice. (If you want to have it anyway, fine. But you can end up having something totally cool ruined. Also no really valuable jewellry, etc.)
I don’t mean to sound like you’ll be jumped. It’s just that it’s already hugely crowded everywhere in town & inner-burbs. I’m going out at 5pm for evening & expect it to be more crowded everywhere than earlier in day & last night. So just be fabulous but it’s a leave-grandma’s-diamond-earrings-at-home kind of thing.
When I said “layers,” I realize that people might think I meant, “pull a polar bear.” No. The smartest thing I ever did was to keep all great big scarves, big pashminas, a few capes (yes). That’s what I meant.

ATTN: Abigail: take it on good authority. FLAT SHOES. Flat shoes, flat shoes (yellow or otherwise:)
A lot of pushing & shoving at these things (which is why we aren’t going to official/ticketed one but if you’ve not been to one, oh what the heck).
It’s a nightmare to coat check. If you do & are with someone: check them together. I urge you to do this.
Check out Roxanne Roberts (WPost) about attending parties/balls. I wish I had the link. But you’ll find it. Every single thing she says is spot-on.
So: 1) flat shoes;
2) warm (Parisian-style layers:); 3)oh this is important: EAT BEFORE YOU GO.
It doesn’t matter what anyone tells you: the food, if there is any & you can get close, will be awful & a gazillion bucks. So try & go somewhere fun beforehand. Have a drink, some dinner, etc.
Then casually, oh-so-effortlessly float in to the place in your flat shoes & elegant layers….and have FUN!

I am so, so, so excited. I got invited to an official inaugural ball! We hadn’t planned on going to DC for the big day and it’s going to be insane, but it’s an opportunity I just couldn’t pass up.
I still have no idea what to wear!
