Black Dress Find

Norma Kamali black dress

Every now and again, I’ll stumble upon one of those easy, gets-it-just-right pieces of clothing that I’ll end up wearing nonstop. This summer, it’s this black dress. Black dresses are often too formal or too short or too fashion-y, but this one is just right — it’s long enough to wear to work, silky enough to wear to dinner and comfy enough to wear to the playground. And it has pockets! Anyway, I’ve been wearing it every third day and wanted to share it with the group:) You can find the dress here and here, if you’d like. (My mom ordered it, too, how cute is that?)

P.S. Other things I’ve worn eight million times, and initial necklaces.

  1. Last year I stumbled across a similarly versatile black dress. Here in the UK, we don’t get that many hot days but then when we do, panic dressing ensues! I often feel I have nothing suitable to wear once it hits 25 degrees celsius (high seventies farenheit) but *the* dress changed all that. This year I found a similar one in navy to help with variety/burden of washing. Summertime and the dressing is easy.

I love it! Black (and dark navy blue) dresses are pretty much my daily uniform.

My mom and I have a lot of the same clothes! I love that we have similar styles and sizes and that I can raid her closet when I visit!

  3. Caitlin says...

Where are the sandals from that you are wearing in the picture?

    • Stella Blackmon says...

Hi Caitlin! Joanna says they’re from a Loeffler Randall sale: http://cupjo.co/2afDToB

      Stella xx

  4. Nothing better than a little black dress!!

  5. Laura C says...

  6. I love a good black dress. Especially with pockets. So handy. X

  7. Deidre says...

Oh Joanna, you are just so lovely. a classic beauty! Also, thank you for keeping your blog so real, and so you.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

thank you so much, deidre! that made my day :)

  8. Anneliese says...

It is so flattering on you Joanna. I have a few dresses by Norma Kamali and they are all perfect for traveling. The slinky jersey does not wrinkle at all!

  9. freya says...

but it doesn’t make you sweat? it’s polyester which I can’t imagine wearing in the 90+ degree heat and humidity we’ve been having in nyc.

  10. That dress is lovely on you. I can see why you like it :) It fits you perfectly…and it can easily be dressed up or down. Cute sandals, too!

This summer has been so hot, all I can think about wearing our loose easy dresses. Unrelated side note: I just finished all of Catastrope based on your rec and it was so good (some episodes not as great but overall I loved it). This morning I randomly thought of Sharon always telling the babysitter to help herself to anything then listing all the things should couldn’t eat and I laughed out loud. I wish there were more episodes!!!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

hahaha i keep thinking of funny lines from the show too. they’re making two new seasons over the next couple years. i cannot wait :)

  12. Love your black dress with pocket!

  13. Katie C says...

I bought a nearly identical dress from Old Navy a few weeks back! Its a delicious jersey fabric with a little bit of stretch. I’ve washed it several times and it still looks new! It was around $20 and came in a ton of colors/patterns!

  14. Sasha says...

Pockets on dresses are the best. There’s actually a little movement out there to encourage designers to put pockets on women’s and girls’ clothing, just like almost all boy’s and men’s wear features them. You know, because we have important stuff we need to stow too.

Btw, that dress is so pretty on you. It just looks comfy and cool, but posh too.

    • Amy says...

We need a similar movement to make purses man-friendly then too! I’ve wished a number of times that my husband had a bag to store his stuff when he’s pocketless because otherwise I end up carting his stuff. Plus all the kids’ stuff!

    • Sam says...

YES! How do I become a part of this movement? I also vote for larger pockets on everything (including jeans) so we can go purse-free!

  15. Zoe says...

I’m not associated w this company in any way but I’m totally into this new clothing company called Brass Clothing – they make easy to wear, easy care, well made clothes that you can dress up and dress down. And the dresses have pockets. I basically want to own almost every dress they make. Oh. And super reasonably priced! It was started by two women that wanted to see well made thoughtful and easy care clothes that they could wear… Every third day. :-)

  16. omg its so cute on you and it looks effortless. My mom would love this so I guess I will get her one.I have a black dress with a similar feel but its a bit longer. Its what I wear now on the weekends. I wear so much black no one even notices that I am wearing the same dress! lol

  17. Sharon says...

It is a lovely dress but not for everybody…………short necked (me) boobs (me) more than svelte (me)

  18. Ellen says...

If you love it that much, buy another one! That way you don’t wear it out right away. I’ve started doing this if I find great basics.

  19. jen says...

Great dress, but I’m the common M so none available.

  20. Daynna says...

    Who makes the dress?

  21. It looks so beautiful on you Joanna!
For myself I can’t imagine wearing a polyester spandex dress in the summer. And if love to see this blog focus on more eco-conscious and ethically made clothing in general. It seems like there is a lot of clothing touted on here that is cheaply made, likely in places with not so great labor policies, and from fabrics that have real environmental effects. I know fashion is also meant to be easy and fun, but this seems kind of like one of those last frontiers that in 20 years we’ll look back on and wonder why so many of these detrimental processes and products were tolerated. I say this with all due respect, and a great love for CoJ and almost all of its content!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      thank you, mariel!

  22. Iryna says...

It sold out on Amazon, and no sizes other then XS and XL. I love it, so will be on the look out. And pockets!!!!!

  23. Cynthia says...

This dress looks great on you, Joanna! It could be a year-round dress if you added a cardigan, tights, and flats or boots in cooler weather. It looks like you could dress it up or down. I wear dresses a lot, because they are cooler in the summer, and as for the rest of the year, they make for an easy outfit. I just bought a piece of knit fabric perfect for a year-round dress. Now I’m waiting to get my sewing machine out of the shop….

  24. jillian says...

but where are your sandals from!?!? i love them!

    • yes, that’s what I want to know!

    • Amy says...

      Those Loeffler Randall Petal sandals!

    • Amy says...

Those are Loeffler Randall Petal sandals. My earlier reply had a typo.

  25. Sandra says...

Wahhh….sold out in my size everywhere, but if you are an XS or XL you are in luck.

  26. Kim says...

I have it in dark blue and wear it to work all the time. It’s really comfortable and easy to wear.

  27. Anita says...

You look fab – the dress really suits you. Would love to see a photo of you and your mum wearing your matching dresses…

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      hahaha we should do that!

  28. Gabrielle says...

Such a good find, too bad there are only XS and XL left!

Looking forward to other ladies sharing (and linking :) to their favorite comfy LBDs.

  29. Functional dresses are a summer necessity! I love this! I try to stay away from black in the summer usually, but we’re in Paris this month and nothing screams American like wearing a bright tangerine dress lol. But a dress that transitions from park to dinner is perfect!

  30. Brady says...

    You look gorgeous!!

  31. love it!

  32. Liza says...

looks so comfy. next question: where are the adorable sandals from!?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

thanks, liza! they’re from a loeffler randall sale: http://cupjo.co/2afDToB

  33. Vilde says...

This dress looks like exactly what I’ve been needing. Thanks Joanna!
Does it wrinkle much? Most dresses I need to be able to stuff into a suitcase.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

thank you so much, vilde! i haven’t found that it wrinkles much at all — i’ve thrown it in suitcases (and on the floor!) and it’s that kind of silky material that doesn’t get wrinkled. hope that helps!

  34. looks lovely! Pockets are a MUST when wearing to the park! :)
