I had one of my best friends and her partner stay at my house this weekend. My husband is on a work trip, so it was a ladies/non-binary extravaganza! We grilled fish and ate a fun farro/cauliflower/feta salad, drank wine and mezcal, watched the movie Fire Island (hilarious take on Pride and Prejudice), and talked relationships, social issues, movies, etc. I really needed it.
And we ate cheese (drunken goat, a funky triple cream, and something with cranberries).
I had a baby Sunday! So baby snuggles and care, and going to attempt to smoke a brisket with a few sides and peach cobbler tomorrow for my husband’s belated birthday dinner (it was the day after baby arrived so he stole the show and brisket is still waiting to be cooked). Things like a quick cobbler and throwing fries in the oven was so easy before, now it seems daunting!
congratulations, Daniela!!!!
Please consider wearing orange this weekend in honor of the victims and survivors of gun violence. Today, Friday, June 3 is the eighth annual Gun Violence Awareness Day, which kicks off Wear Orange weekend. I’m a member of Moms Demand Action, an inclusive group of those seeking common sense gun legislation (I’m not a mom and I am a gun owner). Please learn more at wearorange.org.
thank you, Nancy! I’m not a mom either but I would love to find ways can all participate in this imperative cause. our country, communities, and homes/families deserve better
Nancy, thank you for spotlighting this issue. I’m also a member of Moms Demand Action and I will be wearing orange and calling my reps.
This weekend is going to be a beaut where I am and after a very depressed and melancholy Memorial Day Weekend, I intend to spend this one outside hiking, visiting a new brewery, buying flowers, and setting up a small herb garden on my balcony. Also borrowing “Bittersweet” by Susan Cain from the library after hearing her interview on Armchair Expert and diving deep into embracing my melancholy for creative purposes instead of just trying to jump right back into Positivity and Productivity.
Hmmm… intrigued by the Bittersweet concept. That fits with some of my personal experience. Will check that out! Thanks!
Just added it to my hold list at the library, thank you!
Sooooo me!! I always feel like I’m in the right place when I come here! xoxox
So, what’s a good show to watch this weekend?!
oooh I’ve been loving the second season of Hacks (HBO)! curious to hear other recs!
Season 2 (and 1, if you haven’t seen it yet) of Hacks!! So funny, I find myself cackling the whole way through!
Heartstopper on Netflix. Soooooo good and easily finighable this weekend.
I was JUST discussing this with a friend who always knows the best shows. She said I must watch Only Murders in the Building.
Yes to Hacks Season 2! Also “Conversations with Friends” the New Sally Rooney book to television series was good! (LOVE the acting/actors) – not “Normal People” great IMO- but it was a good watch!
I’ll second Heartstopper! It’s SO wonderful. Minx is also great, as is Starstruck. I’m now watching Conversations with Friends (which is mostly making me want to re-watch Normal People) and excited to start season 2 of Hacks.
Shrill, Marvelous Mrs Maisel, Modern Love, Hacks, Starstruck, and Minx are all great!!
Our Flag Means Death (HBO Max) is what my husband and I are working through right now and are loving it! It’s funny, quirky, but also slips in impressive social commentary. Delightful.
I love that Lady is going to “strategize” about the show she wants to watch. It’s those details that make these so relatable. Will I have time to actually watch a show, or will I just gather suggestions and discuss favorites with friends?
Thistle rennet cheese, thistle rennet cheese! It’s unexpected, it’s vegetarian-friendly, it tastes like benevolent pixies prepared it with their feet!
On new shows, has anyone else seen Hotel Del Luna (Netflix)? It’s a contemporary Korean genderflipped Beauty and the Beast retelling set at a hotel for ghosts. Other shows, please try harder.

And the Brigid Alliance provides transportation support for people who need abortions.
Ooh thank you for the recommendation on the show! This sounds right up my alley.
Ooh, that may be our next show! Thanks for the recommendation!
All of this! My monthly contribution to Planned Parenthood was auto paid today :) And we’re headed to Madison WI tomorrow for a car test drive, but this post will make sure we also visit the most amazing cheese shop for miles around, https://fromagination.com/
Welcome to my city! The Farmers Market will also be around the square tomorrow by Fromagination, so you can knock out the basil too lol.
I’m in Madison, too! We should have a CoJ readers meet up!
I love all the mights. Just what a weekend should be.
Might take a long hot bath with salts…..
Ooh, me too!
Love the calm and peaceful way that these are written… oh just me, strolling through life kindly and with purpose – but not too stressed!
Coco, such a good point about the tone!
Haha, yes – I need to try to cultivate that vibe. :)
Yessss me too! I get stressed a little too much, tbh
Thinking about cheese on the weekend … on it! Haha! I’m looking forward to doing all sorts of little intentional joy filled things so this art represents that brilliantly!
Ah so nice to see that it’s a weekend “lady” vs the usual weekend “mom”. It’s a small change but much more inclusive. Thanks!
Agree!
Just a thought on inclusivity- there is no one universal inclusive representation of a human. If this was a survey or a comic about a group of people I’d want to see someone kinda close to myself represented, but since these comics are often about one person I think they are more about shared common experiences than representing a multitude of identities. I don’t relate to the term “mom”, and I don’t relate to the term “lady”, but I often feel seen by these comics because the experiences they describe are so relatable! I don’t come to COJ expecting a comic that’s like “non-binary lesbian artist WILL be having second coffee this morning” (and I don’t think a ton of COJ readers would see themselves in that descriptor, although some would and others might sip in solidarity), so when I read these I think “damn, I have that experience in common with some moms! Yesss, this lady and I both appreciate petrichor!” instead of “this doesn’t apply to me because I’m not a mom or a lady”. A comic about one individual person is never gonna be inclusive of all identities, but these comics are beautifully and sweetly relatable! And if ya ever want a non-binary lesbian second coffee comic, COJ team, I’m here for ya ;)
Agreed! I love these and identify with going for “a nice walk” (to quote a previous one) so much haha, but I’m not a mom.
I like to say that my personal style is very much “mom in a 1992 L.L. Bean catalog” and I lean into that style in all aspects of my life except for the kiddos.
Anyhow, thanks for the subtle shift in wording, Grace!
agree!
Grace R – This mom/lady/human is completely relating to “non-binary lesbian artist WILL be having second coffee this morning” :) Cheers!
