I have long said that one of life’s little luxuries is being the first to use a clean, dry bathmat.
Returning to my home after an early morning run with friends and my sweet border collie, being greeted by my dear husband and the smell of freshly-brewed coffee, and then taking that first sip of coffee (which always tastes better than any of the other sips). This one scenario is full of so many of my favorite things and simple pleasures!
My grandma always made the best toast. I don’t know how. It was always toasted just to the edge of crispy but not burnt and had the perfect butter ratio.
Getting into a bed with freshly washed sheets
Slipping into a freshly made bed! The first sip of a perfect IPA. The endorphin rush after a great run. Having peace and silence to be left alone to binge your favorite junky reality show.
Yes on all accounts to these small pleasures. I have often wondered if a toast shop might be a hit–different breads and toppings, made perfectly, with comforting drinks and cozy chairs.
I’d go there! My friend was dreaming of starting a toast food truck which I think would be a hit!
I live in New Zealand and a couple of toast cafes have popped up in the past couple years. I think your right that people enjoy the basic pleasure of a piece of toast, after the trend of waffles piled high with a million elabarote toppings.
Sometimes I feel like an alien when I tell people I don’t like podcasts…. nor toast (gasp!). But everyone else I know looooves toast so I think your cafe would be a hit
The perfect cup of coffee. Smooth, dark or medium roast with Starbucks caramel macchiato creamer.
Simple pleasure: when your regular morning cup of coffee is just absolutely delicious. Same water, same machine, same coffee. . . but some days, it just HITS THE SPOT!
Yes and amen!!!
Wearing a sweatshirt in the morning.
I love that wedding comic.
Sincerely,
1 of the 10 bridesmaids straightening out the bride’s dress while fake laughing.
Another simple pleasure that I hat the pleasure of being pleased by today is when Cup of Jo’s weekend post comes out extra early Friday afternoon and I can really savor it at work while having no more bandwidth left for actual work!
Reading Cup Of Jo at work. Always helps to brighten my day :)
So my toddler has taken to buttered toast with “sprinkles” -Trader Joe’s Everything but the Bagel. Each morning he is delighted to eat it and offers, “do you want a bite of my DELICIOUS toast, Mommy?” SO good. His joy is the best.
(oh, and my oldest devoured the Mercy Watson book series, where a pig adores “hot buttered toast” and once you read all of those, you will crave it, too!)
Yes! How on earth have you gotten this far in life without watching it!!!! Soooooo glad you Finally did :-)
i would add nothing. these are the things.
With all this toast talk lately I’m reminded of the YA TOAST camp song…anyone else?? Here are the lyrics for anyone who wasn’t privy to camp life and all its weirdness! (you can also google it to see videos, if you’re super curious!) Feel free to integrate this into your morning routine lol
Yeah Toast
All around the country and coast to coast
People always say what do you like most?
I don’t wanna brag I don’t wanna boast
I always tell ’em I like toast
Yeah toast!
Yeah toast!
I get up in the morning ’bout six A. M
Have a little jelly have a little jam
Take a piece of bread put it in the slot
Push down the lever and the wires get hot
I get toast
Yeah toast!
Yeah toast!
Now there’s no secret to toasting perfection
There’s a dial on the side then you make your selection
Push to the dark or the light and then
If it pops too soon press down again
Make toast
Yeah toast!
Yeah toast!
My dad is a Heywood Banks fan, so I grew up on this! My family will sometimes just randomly yell, “Yeah toast!!”. I also recommend the Wiper Blades song. :)
After being without power last February during the Texas winter storm (our apartment got down to 40 degrees!), we woke up to the glorious sound of our heater finally running again. I made myself a piece of sourdough toast with lots of butter…the first hot thing I’d had in days. It remains one of the best things I’ve ever eaten.
successfully tweezing that one pesky hair!! bliiiiiisssssssss
Best comment ever.
I love Grace Farris. That is all 😊
“Hello, Lover”
HAHAHA. Had me laughing out loud!
I laughed out loud, too!
Joanna, I just needed to tell you that I watched When Harry Met Sally for the first time last night and it was everything I hoped it would be!!! It felt like watching an old comfort, even though I’d never seen it, because so many scenes have been referenced through Cup of Jo articles over the years. :) I don’t know how I made it this long not seeing it but it was worth the wait.
Makes me so happy!!!

Never have I felt more seen than seeing that hair-tye moment. I mean, RIGHT?
Right!!! This spoke to my heart. :)
I once posted a grumpy post on Facebook about how I didn’t have any hair ties in my purse that day, and about 10 minutes later, one of my colleagues showed up at my desk with a hair tie. It definitely made me feel loved.
oh my gosh, Erin! love that.
Stepping on a crunchy leaf. So satisfying! The first day of fall lands next Wednesday, and the foliage is slowly but surly transforming to it’s autumn palette here in the Midwest.
YES! I’m in the PNW, so there’s a slim couple of hours when the leaves have fallen but aren’t soggy. I still LOVE crunching or swishing through leaves on the walk to school. (Now on the walk to dropping my kids off at school, lol)
Erin: Yes! We must enjoy the non-soggy leaves while we can! Nothing more disappointing than going to crunch on a leaf only to find it’s crunchy phase has faded.
Loren: Stella is my spirit animal! Thanks for sharing that heartwarming video!
Me, this week. On the dot. The hair-tie: every morning before breakfast. The book: all week, right after I wake up (I don’t wanna do work. I want to keep reading my book!). The call: for me, it’s a text with an old friend earlier this week… in days of COVID, even a text is lovely. And lastly, I swear to goodness, I just thought to myself “I’ll check Cup of Jo, and then grab a slice of toast” Now… for my toast.
What book? I am in a reading rut and could use a non-put-downable book to help pull me out!
Book: Beartown! Really well written. I’m a stickler for good writing / good prose, and this book was wonderful.
The feel of knitting needles gliding between your fingers!
YES!!
Here's the full comic.
