Mozzarella for the win. By the wonderful Grace Farris.
P.S. Lipstick styles and what’s your sign?
As a Cypriot (Halloumi is our national cheese) I could not agree more! Halloumi is god! :)
nancy’s chopped. IYKYK. I attempt to recreate it w/ less of the meats and it is still so good.
Crusty sourdough grilled cheese sandwiches, soups ( mostly pinch of yums creamy tortellini soup) and salads were my unsung heroes of 2020! They were the exact comfort and familiarity and heartiness my soul needed.
id say my “hierarchy” of salads would be my home made salads as king! I make KILLER salads at home and its SO EASY! Yesterdays salad was organic 50/50 mix, olive oil/ balsamic dressing, cold bbq’d steak, feta cheese, kalamata olives, roasted carrots/sweet potatoes (from last nights steak bbq dinner), avocado, bacon bits. it was FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC. and so much cheaper then anywhere id buy that from. I ate it outside on a blanket on my front lawn in the son, with my children, it was 71 degrees. God bless you california.
Ummm….but you forgot the one with the super creamy and sharp blue cheese, and the smoked almonds and pickled beets. Or the one with homemade croutons that are to-die-for. Or the one with Manchego, marcona almonds and dried cherries. Or arugula/ watermelon/ feta at the height of summer. Or peach and burrata….or panzanella- yum! Ok, the possibilities are endless. But I actually prefer to make salads at home since most salad bases are blah and I like to make my own dressing!
Yum!!!
yes!!! see my comment, totally agree!
Yes! I still remember a salad from the Barrel House Tavern in Sausalito in the early days of my relationship. New love was beautiful, the glittering view out over the bay at night was beautiful, but oh my god, that kale salad–perfection. I’ve tried to recreate it at home many times over the years but I still can’t get it just so. Restaurant salads are great salads.
cheese and olives too, i find salads so bland and boring without them
Salads that come in a box from the grocery store are generally so, so disappointing, EXCEPT FOR the Salmon Nicoise from Union Market which is what I would choose for my last meal on this earth. And honestly if I continue to eat it for as many meals as I do, the odds of it incidentally being my last meal on this earth are reasonably high.
Ahah!!
JUST figured out last night that our favorite local pizza place has an “add burrata” option for its regular house salad, and it costs $1, BUT THEY GIVE YOU A WHOLE FULL-SIZED BALL OF BURRATA when you select that option. Let me tell you, taking a standard/good restaurant salad and adding a fresh burrata ball… basically reduced me to tears (of joy). While watching HBO on my couch.
Oh my gosh this is the best… so happy for you!!
Read the room, sis. “Hate crime” as a joke after Atlanta and AAPI attacks? Too soon/never, please and thank you.
Halloumi and grilling cheese in general is GOOD
my husband thinks it’s ridiculous when we go out to a restaurant and i order a salad. in his mind, i can just easily make a salad at home. but it’s toooootally different when someone else makes it! one of my favorite meals on earth is a salmon salad – made by someone else, of course.
Wouldn’t have thought that I now love all type of salads. I hated the taste of lettuce! I even hated cold sandwiches. Now I love the complementary ones with miso-ginger dressing, excessive cobb salads, massaged kale salad with lemon olive oil acv minced garlic, spicy arugulas with shaved parmesan and roasted artichokes, cucumber and tomato salads..all of them! I still love chicken tenders with fries…but it’s complete with a side of salad!
Your salad options sound delightful! And now I’m hungry…. ; )
Personally I adore a good pasta salad…. But I love most of all a good spinach salad with chicken salad on top!
Dangit, now I’m hungry.
Anything with halloumi is better.
Restaurant caesar for the win!!! I add blackened shrimp or chicken breast if it’s my main course, delicious. If I’m eating it as a true salad course, you better believe I ask for anchovies.
hah! this makes me think of another cartoon by one of my favorites, Nathan Pyle who does Strange Planet:

lesson: the best salads are actually CHEESE with some green stuff sprinkled around
My favorite lunch order used to be a Le Pain Quotidien item called “Cheese Salad.”
why is it that salad made by someone else tastes better than one you make yourself?
yes!! there’s actually a study on that: https://www.forbes.com/sites/sap/2013/07/03/why-do-sandwiches-taste-better-when-someone-else-makes-them/?sh=3068548f5521
Ali Wong says a similar thing in her stand-up show: food tastes so much better when you don’t have to “earn” it, which I totally relate to, haha. Shudder to think what that may say about me.
i mush prefer my home made salads!
I actually much prefer my own salads!
