Hi,
May I just say…
That I very much enjoy reading Friday comments. It feels like the after- party party. Where the host adds more logs to the fire and says to stay as long as you wish…
Beautifully said :)
“152 insights into my soul!” Oh Grace, how you know us so well.
This comment is perfect
I’m in love with Grace Farris
Connell, ha!
cute! except for me, fall is horror movie season!
I just watched my first Jane Austen adaptation. (Pride and prejudice with Keira knightly.) what are the other good ones?!
Sense and Sensibility (screenplay by Emma Thompson) is one of my favorite movies ever. Persuasion is also good. Have fun!
The BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth is a classic — worth watching even if you’ve seen the newer version. And Sense and Sensibility with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet is divine! :)
oooh so many great ones! I love sense and sensibility, too.
Seconding Sense and Sensibility with Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant and Hugh Laurie and Professor Umbridge (don’t know her name IRL) and Kate Winslet and Alan Rickman and that whole cast and movie is amazing!!! Saw it a couple weeks ago for the first time. Please watch and report back! xoxo.
The BBC Pride and Prejudice adaptation is my fave! It’s a 6 part miniseries
from the 90’s with Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. It’s on HBO max and has been my source of comfort-viewing this pandemic :)
The Emma miniseries with Jonny Lee Miller as Knightley is so good. Much better than the Gwyneth Paltrow movie in my opinion.
For Mansfield Park, the 1999 film with Frances O’Connor, Jonny Lee Miller, and Alessandro Nivola is my favorite. It’s not Austen’s most popular book (understatement, ha), but this film highlights Fanny’s quiet strength beautifully and gives her a hobby (she’s the writer of Austen’s Juvenilia).
The newest Emma with Anya Taylor Joy is also great.
May I recommend the FOUR PART series of Emma with Romola Garai and Johnny Lee Miller? The actors make it so so charming with their natural undercurrent of chemistry, and the pacing is perfect.
Also in agreement with all the Sense and Sensibility fans. Emma Thompson nailed that one. The last time I watched it Alan Rickman had me in tears. It’s some of his finest and most subtle work, I think.
Thank you all!!!! Taking notes like a madwoman…
This is so right on!
Fair warning: wait on bangs. Bangs and masks do not pair well!
Not sure what this means but I beg to differ! I have bangs and have never had an issue with wearing a mask — looks-wise or getting in the way/causing issues. Go for the bangs!
Ha I had huge curly bangs heading into pandemic and my face totally disappeared! Decided to let them grow out just until masks aren’t a daily thing. But generally I’m very pro-bangs!
Bangs and masks are okay, but bangs and winter hats are a real problem.
Also bangs and forehead temperature checks are an issue.
Haha, Connell indeed… <3
Yes to Normal People influencing bang decision.
I absolutely hoard tea in the fall.
I’m a huge green tea fan, but am always wondering what everyone’s favorite herbal tea is. I love a blend (but don’t love roiboos)! Maybe a small business to support?
I’m a big fan of hibiscus! It’s nice as a hot tea and iced.
https://www.sipsby.com/ is a Black and QTPOC owned company based in my home-town of Portland – they send monthly tea samplers to try new and wonderful things.
ginger “tea” (I put a finger of ginger in one liter of water, boil for a few minutes and can drink it all day; sometimes, I add almond or coconut milk, honey, spices; but most of the times, just ginger and water.
Ginger is great! Also, hibiscus! I like Steven Smith Tea out of Portland! :)
Song Tea’s “carrot” flavor is the absolute best herbal tea I’ve ever had. Nothing artificial and has a warm, but also maybe citrusy vibe?? It doesn’t exactly taste like carrots, even though they are in the blend. Song Tea is a small business in San Francisco, so it’s also nice to support for that reason!
I highly recommend the Roasted Almond tea by Capital Teas! It is a tisane so no caffeine. It has pieces of apple, caramelized almonds, cinnamon, and beetroot. It tastes like a dessert!
Yes to the Austen adaptations. I don’t know why, but fall is the best time to watch them. Now I need to get mine and watch them.
For the love of god, just get bangs!
I contemplated them for a decade and was always talked out of it at the last second by fear-mongering friends and hair stylists who’d go on and on about “maintenance” and “cowlicks.” I’d always chicken out and get side bangs or something half-assy, until one day I marched into a salon and asked for thick, straight-across bangs. And just like that, the deed was done.
I know not everyone thinks their hair will “work well” with bangs, but you won’t know until you try! And what better time than now while we’re all at home (in case you really end up hating them)?
The trick is to not be too precious about it. I air dry mine and trim them myself. They’re never perfect, and that’s okay! If you really crave order, run a straight iron over them or do a blow dry. But I say it’s fine to rock your curly, wispy, or otherwise “messy” bangs. Those are on trend right now, anyway!
Sure, if you want to grow them out, the process might be tough. But that’s what bobby pins are for! Just clip them off to the side and before you know it, you won’t have bangs anymore, but you WILL have finally tried them. Who knows? You might be like me, and still have rockin’ fringe five years later. :)
I love your passion on this subject. You seriously made my day. And might also make me get bangs…
I love this! I’m really go to do mine soon. I had short bangs when I had a pixie (which I loved – on a similar note, cut your hair short if you want to! have an adventure! it will grow!) and as a kid in the 90s – they were great both those times, why not now??
Needed this pep talk!!
Yes! I’ve had bangs for years and actually used this quarantine to grow them out and see if I liked them that way. Ended up hating them grown out and finally just cut them off again. What a relief to have them back! Made me so happy.
I agree! Just TRY them! I was always afraid, and then last year I took the plunge. I LOVED them! Ultimately though, I could never get them to look the way I wanted them too, so I grew them out (right as quarantine started, so there’s a silver lining) but I’m so glad I did it!!
On another note, right before I looked at this post I finished filling out my mail in ballot, then was staring off into the distance while drinking my cup of tea. So, Yes! Spot on!! :)
I feel the same way about bangs! Why does everyone seem to bash on them and turn others away from getting them? I gave myself bangs in early August after not having them since I was a teenager and I have love, love, LOVED them. Yes, they’re sometimes a pain, but I love how they frame my face and give my hair more personality.
GET THE DANG BANGS
Side note, I used Cup of Jo’s tutorial on how to cut your own bangs and it made it so easy for me (https://cupofjo.com/2014/04/how-to-cut-your-own-bangs/)! If you’re feeling daring, I highly recommend it—it was a very cathartic, joyful experience for me.
I have literally done all of these things this fall, hahaha!
Love the things you do in fall. I thought I was the only one.
