Raven Leilani’s Luster, one of the most widely anticipated books of the year, came out this week to great fanfare. The smart, witty novel follows Edie, a young Black woman working an admin job in publishing, who finds herself part of a suburban white couple’s open marriage. This summer, I’ve kept starting and stopping books, unable to find anything compelling, but once I read Leilani’s opening line — “The first time we have sex, we are both fully clothed, at our desks during working hours, bathed in blue computer light” — I knew I wouldn’t put this one back down.
Have you ever seen a shag cake? This wedding cake, above, looks like a 1960’s rug in the best way. “People love them and always want to touch them,” the baker Kait Winowitch told us. “And the buttercream tastes as good as it looks.”
At age 41, I started drinking coffee for the first time in my life, and it’s really hitting the spot. (GUYS WHY DIDN’T ANYONE SAY ANYTHING?;) Now I’m wanting all the coffee-flavored treats, including Jeni’s Coffee With Cream and Sugar Ice Cream. Yummmmmmm.
