Help! Which Wallpaper Would You Choose?

dining room

We have a small but cheerful dining room in our house. Right now it has white walls, and we’d love to mix it up with wallpaper. But it’s so hard to visualize different prints! Would you mind weighing in? Here are three very different ones…

We could do this lovely marble paper.

calico wallpaper

We could go with this trippy outer-space-looking paper.

swedish wallpaper

Or we could go with pretty Swedish paper with flowers.

Thoughts? Which would you choose? (Also, aren’t these trapeze and women wallpapers cool?)

P.S. All our home tours, and a Scandinavian bedroom trick.

I would go for the floral! It’s so bright and pretty it’ll cheer up your day every day. The marble is beautiful, but it feels like it would be an over-stimulation for your eyes on anything more than a small bit of wall. I’d take a large bit of it and stick it on a framed cork board though – it would be the prettiest message board ever. The space-y one was out of the question for me, I think it reflects the light in a slightly dimming way. So yay for florals!

  2. Micah says...

Did you guys end up choosing one? I’m dying to know :)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      we’re still considering!

  3. Definitely prefer the marbled paper. The “outer space” one looks very 70s with the metallic finish, and the Swedish flowers are way too busy and childish looking. The marbled looks much more sophisticated and would fit your room and style better I think.

  4. I think the middle one, gives you more room which is good! The first one is too busy and will likely make the room look smaller and the last one is way too colorful and you will be sick of it soon! Go trippy, I’d say :)

  5. Cindy S says...

I think the middle one, it has just enough color without being overpowering. That being said I also think it is not as busy and distracting as the others. I also love the idea of a chair rail to break up the room. We have a chair rail in our kitchen and it is a wonderful look. I really think you would get tired of the marble and you would be so locked into a color palette. The flowers are just way to busy for my taste, but if you like that then go for it. A chair rail might help this pattern to tone it down a bit.

  6. Abigail says...

    Marbles or flowers. NOT space!!

    • Abigail says...

Oops I obv meant marble not marbles! :)

    • Funny, I am exactly opposite on that :)

  7. Jackie says...

    Outer space!

  8. Judy Nelson says...

I’d say the marble – has a nice pattern, and I think it suits a dining room much better than the other two which I also like, but not for a dining room…..

  9. VVeronika says...

It looks pretty as it is now :-) I would say stick with the middle ground.
The swedish might be too much after a while, the middle one is not that interesting…so I would pick the marble. it would look good with the chairs too!

  10. meg says...

Outer space all the way! It’s even called Home to Polaris—The North Star … always guiding your family home! Also, would you do a house tour — or at minimum link your table (and art behind it)? It’s amazing!

  11. Ingrid says...

Outer Space. I don’t think you’d get tired of it.

  12. Sanna Nilsson says...

Almost every fourth house I’ve bene to has a Josef Frank wallpaper (yes, I’m Swedish). Even though we see it everywhere, we don’t get tired of it. I’d go with the flowers.

  13. Gabrielle Muir says...

Definitely the outer space organic feeling one, the other 2 are definitely too contrived and uptight.

  14. Rachel says...

Anything by Calico, they have a beautiful marble series too

  15. AL says...

    Marble hands down.

  16. Elizabeth says...

Definitely the outer space wallpaper. I think the others are too busy for your space and I think you would quickly grow tired of them. Every time you look at the outer space paper you will see something new.

  17. Allie Maki Maya says...

    The flowers!

  18. Jk says...

Did you ever find the remote 📺??

    • Aimee Rowland says...

She did! But after they took the TV stand apart, wah wah.

  19. Kim says...

My favorite is the outer space one. I think it will look different in sunlight vs. artificial light vs. candlelight and will go with everything more than the others.

  20. Swedish flowers – cheerful in all seasons and so bright. Timeless!

  21. Meg says...

The Swedish flowers look the most like your style. Love it!

  22. Kerry says...

I like for my home to flow. Where you could take anything out of one room and place in another and it works. So I immediately looked back at your house tour… marble, definitely marble. :) the color is perfect. I love blue.

  23. Molly says...

Marble. Hands down. I like the last one, but I think I’m a room that size it might feel like too much.

  24. Stephney Drinkard says...

I think the marble is lovely, nice pattern not overwhelming or too distracting.

  25. Samantha says...

Swedish flowers. With your light wood floors and bright open space they will look gorgeous

  26. Ellen says...

Have to say marble. Clean and not so colorful to be distracting.

  27. Peggy Bonanno says...

My vote is for the outer space wallpaper. Very different.

  28. Lisa Mis says...

    Marble!!!

  29. Jen says...

I’m ALL about the marble – dreamy and so fun to look at!

  30. hammondzoo says...

    I vote marble.

  31. laura says...

    outerrrrrrrrrr spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace!

  32. Leslie says...

The outer space paper, Ursa. Definitely. Will go with everything.

  33. Lili Jane says...

The trippy outer-space-looking paper, for sure !!
    For infinite inspiration :)

  34. Shawna says...

The flowers are so bright and fun…def my favorite and goes with the overall vibe of your home. Can’t wait to see results!

  35. Sally Shepard LeBaron says...

Oh those flowers are so cheery! Now I’m thinking my dining room needs them (esp on a gloomy January in Portland).

  36. Patti Brown says...

Would need to see your dishes.

  37. Julie Battaglia says...

The Swedish floral is fresh and happy! That one is my vote! Maybe the marble?!

  38. 100% Swedish flowers! So so much cheer for the gloomy winter days.

  39. Hani says...

First, Jo, more power to you in seeking other people’s opinions. If would suffer from paralysis by analysis. :-/ I like the space one and the flowers. Really depends on the mood you are going for in the room. One is happy and bright and one is more moody/psychedelic/modern. The repeating pattern of the marble is…

  40. Effie says...

I liked the marble up close, but not on the wall, so definitely outer space!

    • Amanda says...

Love the marble! But I also think outer space would be fun too – esp with your boys and at dinner parties.

  41. Kristan says...

Outer space, for sure! The other two are uniquely lovely, but easier to tire of, I think (and the flowers seem more bedroom-y).

  42. Sharon says...

I would choose the marble but your room has enough to handle the blue swirl..maybe an accent wall and your art on the others..
    Good luck..

  43. Katie says...

the marble! I agree its best suited to a dining room.

  44. Anne says...

    Marble!

  45. Maggie says...

    Space 💯

  46. Sara says...

Josef Frank’s flowers for sure! I have the black version in my dining room and it looks amazing

  47. Jessica says...

    /outer/space/

So interesting, yet subtle, for the space!

  48. Kayleigh says...

    The flowers 😍

  49. Kate says...

    Outer space!!

I can’t stand the repeating pattern of the marble one. Outer space looks like a cool textured wall

    • Kim says...

      Totally agree!!

  50. mimi says...

    outer space

  51. Rebecca Lucas says...

The marble for sure. The space one is too shiny for a dining room, you want to feel cosseted in a dining room. And can you imagine the flowers with a hangover? *shudder*

    • Vale says...

      Hahahahaha

  52. Kim says...

    Marble! Love it!

  53. Erica Lee says...

    Marble!

  54. Kate says...

Marble or Flowers. I live in Copenhagen and work in Sweden, and each of my choices reflects my love of both countries’ styles… The flower one IS busy, as another person has said, but when it’s across a big wall, in a repeat print, it’s really lovely – I’ve seen it many times in situ :)

  55. Max says...

The swedish print. So fresh and clean looking

  56. Ann says...

My favorite is the marble, which I’d do for the first 3 feet of the wall and top with a white chair rail., leaving the wall above the chair rail white. The chair rail also protects the wall against energetic chair backing up.

    • Mary says...

Now this is a great suggestion.

Also, Joanna, after going back to read the post about your home I’m wondering if you ever found the remote to the black box in your bedroom??

    • Joanna Goddard says...

haha yes! we hired an electrician to take apart the black box and, lo and behold, when he looked inside, he found the remote! anton suddenly remembered dropping it in there. :)

  57. Jane Ardizzone says...

    Swedish paper with flowers.

  58. Marny says...

Before you do anything, check out http://www.kategolding.ca. I really think you’ll love her aesthetic.

  59. Alex says...

argh…scratch my previous comment, labelled incorrectly. I’d choose the outer space one. The other ones are too busy for that large a space and given the decor of your other rooms, this would give you more versatility. Also it looks like it reflects light, which would give the walls a glow at night during dinner parties, especially with candles. Also, I think you’re less likely to ‘date’ the room. Wallpaper is big now, but some of the other ones could look a little fad-dy, and the outerspace one seems more sophisticated but fun. Said a mouthful here, and looking at the other comments, looks like I’m in the minority with this suggestion. Before committing to this, I think there are apps where you can visualize this in a room beforehand.

  60. alex says...

    Marble paper. Definitely.

  61. Adele says...

Marble. I love the others, especially the flowers, but, feel they are better suited for rooms other than a dining room. I think the marble will be more versatile.

    • Hani says...
