A Cup of Jo: A Day in the Life of a Bed

You know those mornings when you just don’t want to get up because nothing could ever feel as comforting as the warm cocoon of your bed? Do you ever wonder: How does the bed feel? Here, along with our favorite Brooklinen sheets, we’re celebrating beds with a day in the life of ours…

Brooklinen Chambray Sheets

6:30 a.m.: Wake Up
Every morning, Toby comes in around 6:30 a.m. For years, we got up with them at the crack of dawn, but now that they’re five and eight, Anton and Toby usually go off until 7:15 and we can doze a bit more. They have a little clock to track the time, and they’re supposed to play and watch cartoons, but sometimes we’ll wake up and find Starburst wrappers on the floor. Anton is utterly offended when I ask him. “Of course I didn’t eat them!” he told me yesterday. “Okay, I did.”

7:30 a.m.: Wardrobe Selection
Confession: I wear basically the same thing every day. But if I’m dressing up for something outside of my five-outfit rotation, I’ll lay clothes out on the bed while I figure it out. It always feels like starting from scratch.

8:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.: Lonely Bed
We take the boys to school at 8:30, and from that point forward the bed is on its own until 7:30 at night. But it’s not totally alone; it’s swathed in Brooklinen’s chambray linen sheets (we have the navy). We use Brooklinen sheets exclusively at home and we swear by them. Their linen collection is produced by a family mill in Portugal, where every set is crafted individually and then stone-washed for that soft, rumpled, “lived-in” look. (And if the bed feels like changing its look, the linen collection has recently grown to include nine colors — including pink!)

7:30 p.m.: Anton’s Bedtime
In the evening, our bed doubles as a hiding spot for Anton to attempt to avoid his own bed. Anton can be quiet forever, to the point where you suddenly wonder if he’s not in the house. He makes himself at home under the bed, even bringing toys along. For a little dude, he has so much patience!

9 – 11ish p.m.: Chill Time
What are you watching these days? After the boys are asleep, I’ll sometimes tear my way through a show — I recently watched all of Downton Abbey in around five seconds. But I really like when Alex and I are watching the same show. Right now, we’re into Better Call Saul. I’ll be like, ‘Let’s just watch fifteen minutes,’ and then of course we’ll get sucked in. The bed is an excellent movie theater.

11 p.m.: Bedtime
Do you need sleep tools? Because Alex and I are big nerds, our kit involves a white noise machine, a sleep mask and Alex’s trusty mouth guard, which he wears to prevent snoring. I actually find his mouth guard weirdly romantic, since he suffers through it so we can sleep next to each other. Sometimes I’ll look over at his sleeping face with the mouth guard and my heart will swell. Marriage is so weird:)

Weekend Edition
Of course, weekends are a little more relaxed. Sometimes you hear families talk about spending lazy weekends together in their pajamas. That is not a thing for our family; our kids are wild! But we do have a subscription to the paper, and we love to read it together. The boys are at an age where they’ll each take a section — Toby is obsessed with travel and planning pretend trips, while Anton looks at the sports section. (“I’m a fan of all the teams of all the sports,” he says.) It’s always so much fun to read a paper with other people, don’t you think?

Our bed, like many beds, is such a gathering place, in large part thanks to Brooklinen sheets. We’ve used only Brooklinen sheets and comforters for years — and really, really love them. After a couple washes, they become super soft and are the nicest thing to slip into after a long day.
