The other day I made eye contact with an older gentleman, just as we both realized we were wearing the same outfit: flat-brimmed hat, scarf, tortoiseshell glasses, and layers of neutral wool and plaid. We both put a hand to our brim in a silent salute to kindred style, and went our separate ways…
Michelle Obama, basically.
I love seeing women rocking their own personal style. The most flattering thing a woman can wear is her confidence.
My granny and Queen Elizabeth II. I love to wear a scarf on my head when it is windy and/or cold, and the Queen’s pairing of pins and pearls is just my style. Little girls are always fascinated with my scarves.
Mine would be a full pie of:
Wishing that Garanimals existed for adults.
Old photos of my mom from the 80’s, swoon.
Strangers on the subway! The other day on the Q train I was dying to ask a fellow rider where she’d gotten her amazing boots but she had headphones in and I thought tapping her on the shoulder was a bridge too far….
LOL! I shop the subway all the time! Especially helpful when you want to know how shoes hold up!
I work in a restaurant, so my first thought is my customers! I have to wear a really tacky chef outfit, so I’m always eyeing the looks of folks who come in through our doors. One girl came in the other day in a LBD, barely-above-the-ankle pink lace socks, white canvas Keds, and a slouchy denim jacket, and I was like YES! I must copy that beyond these uniformed walls in my daily life. Haha.
My mom, who managed to look good no matter what
Audrey Hepburn
Carolyn Bessette
Meghan Markle (her coat game is incredible)
The Modcloth Mavens – hello plus size style for FUN. Who knew?
Mary Tyler Moore. The Crown. Katherine Hepburn.
Cool athleisure mom at preschool drop-off…how does she manage to look so awesome AND comfortable?
Adult children
Flowers in the morning
Old jeans
Audrey Hepburn for sure
A beautiful well made leather purse and sandals
Clouds
Hot sand at the beach
Art history professors.
French women.
Nuns (seriously, black and white!).
Equestrians.
Gloria Steinem.
I’d add fashionable women from old Hollywood movies! Their look is definitely my style goals! And a little bit from the men in old movies, mainly a fedora & trench. Lately, I’ve been wearing hats and linen pants like old movies, here: https://bit.ly/2vbHMEA I’ve also been trying to find a great pair of paper bag pants, but no luck yet!
My friend, Gill, who wears soft, muted, beautiful colors and isn’t afraid to look cool and have a hot bod.
SOUL TRAIN!
People in art museums! For me, that’s usually at the Art Institute of Chicago. So many cool glasses, arty earrings, funky shoes, interesting color combinations. And because they’re strangers for some reason I have no qualms about asking them where they got their cool gear! That’s how we roll in the Midwest, I guess. :-)
Ooh, great tip! I love “art student” style. I think you’re right about the Midwest. I always volunteer where I got my clothing or accessories if someone compliments or asks. Seems like the neighborly, Midwest thing to do. ;)
Would add: strangers who have made a bold hair color choice, people who wear clothes for purposes other than what they’re intended for (ie. pajama shirt as work wear, swimsuit as crop top, athleisure), all the ladies from Mad Men, annnnd anyone who compliments my outfit because I’m probably vibing with their fashion choices as well :)
Same. Same. Same.
My grandma for sure! She was the most stylish woman I know. She had a collection of amazing dresses that were tailor-made for her in the 50s-70s. (This was very affordable in the Soviet Union at the time, not a elite thing to do.) Beautiful fabrics and cool fashions that she designed jointly with her seamstress. I wish I could wear some of her dresses now that she’s gone but she was quite a bit taller and significantly bustier than me so they would require major alterations that are beyond my budget. I do have one summer dress of hers, made of Uzbek ikat-type fabric, and maybe one day I can afford to have it altered so I can wear it.
My best friend! I remember when we were in college and I felt like I couldn’t “copy” her—had to maintain my own M-O, of course. Now, I’m older and wiser and I can see how brilliant we both are in our own ways. Neither of us will hesitate to text the other, “I’m totally stealing that outfit! Thank you xoxo.”
My college best friend and I have lived about 1,000 miles apart for most of our post-college lives, but when we see each other, once a year or so, we often accidentally turn up wearing similar things. Or in one notable instance, the exact same skirt. :)
I loooove these comments!
That super cool waitress who seated us once at Delancey in Seattle, that girl I met on a college visit as a high school student, food blogger’s self-conscious selfies, my favorite dress at age 4, old men in Rome, my male grad student peers who wear the same thing they’ve worn every day for their whole life and don’t worry if it’s redundant or childish.
also Patti Smith forever <3
My chic coworker would take up 50% of my pie chart, haha. I’ll give another 20% to the cool women on the streetcar on my morning commute.
I would add Cup of Jo staff to that list!!
Rom com heroines, always. Clumsy Sandra Bullock in “While you were sleeping” was my favourite, now Hilary Swank from “PS. I love you”. That’s an inspiration, ladies!
ahh yes her character is ps i love you was so, so good.
Ms. Frizzle, older women who wear 25 patterns at once and look incredibly chick, my mom in the early 80s (minus the pleated shorts…so far), girls with bangs, the cool moms at my daughter’s school, 6 year olds.
Yes! Ms. Frizz. I’ve spent too many hours checking out her style choices.
Ms. Frizzle is mine too!
ah idea! what about a post listing someone’s classic rom com heroines? i’d also love to read the comments that would be under that post (and it would help inspire my next movie night). :)
but YES to their fashion inso. there was just an article recently on man repeller about jenna’s clothes in 13 going on 30. also: meg ryan’s characters in her nora ephron movies, amelie, summer from 500 days of summer, both of the julia roberts characters in my best friend’s wedding & pretty woman, *all* the women in clueless. okay i’ll stop.
My moms life before she had me is my style gooooaaaalllssssss!!!! A few of her vintage pieces finally fit me now so I stole (read borrowed) one of her 70s dresses for Afropunk. I felt like a freaking super-everything that entire day.
I bow down to women who rock that look. I nominate you for a week of outfits so that we can all see!!!
The movie Heathers was my high school senior year style guide.
All of that! Plus women who were at their career peak in the 70’s and have aged superbly in every way (Susan Sarandon, Angelica Houston)
The Hepburns: Audrey and Katherine! Perfect blend of feminine and feisty.
Also Diane Keaton from Annie Hall was a huge inspiration for me back in the day.
Wes Anderson movies
European children
Amélie Poulain
Glitterandlazers (awesome instagrammer)
People who work in independent shops
Older men
Flowy styles from Anthropolgie (yes, still)
1990s Meg Ryan 4-ever.

The Barista at my local coffee shop who always looks effortlessly cool and makes me wonder how old it too old to get a nose ring
lol, ^ this!
Nailed it!
-Sister’s closet
Caroline’s pajamas from yesterday’s post!
Lol I love “protagonists of illustrated children’s books.” I always joke that Miss Lila Greer from Iggy Peck/Rosie Revere/Ada Twist is my style muse (though Ada’s mom is no slouch in the style department either) and it feels good to see that validated! ha! seriously though I love Miss Lila Greer’s cigarette pants and big topknot.
Ada’s mom is the first character I thought of when I read “protagonists of illustrated children’s books.” How funny!
yes!!! all the moms in that book series are #stylegoals ;)
I also like what most of the moms wear in the “How do dinosaurs…” series!
