Last month, Alex and I spent forever debating paint colors for our bedroom — paint is so hard to envision. Thank you so much for all the advice. We actually started with a full coat of dark gray on all the walls, then panicked and decided to change course! Finally, we arrived at a soft pink, and took the opportunity to refresh our bedding with Brooklinen’s new twill collection. Here are a few photos, if you’d like to see…
Classic sheets; striped duvet.
After a year-and-a-half with white walls…
Candle; twill sheets and pillowcases; twill duvet cover; wool throw.
…we are loving the new pale pink walls! They feel like a hug. The color changes throughout the day depending on the light, and goes from pale peach in the morning to a dusty lavender in the late afternoon. My friends keep asking how Alex feels, but he told me, “I’m fine with a pink room, as long as there’s a beautiful woman in it.” Needless to say, he scored major points with that one, haha.
(Also, close readers may remember the insane TV cabinet we used to have at the foot of our bed, for which Anton had lost the remote so we couldn’t open it. We ended up taking the whole thing apart, and lo and behold, the remote was inside. Kids, man!)
To bring the room together, we made up our bed with Brooklinen’s new twill line, which might well be the softest and most comfortable bedding we’ve ever slept on. The twill is perfect for winter (it was actually inspired by the Danish concept of hygge, say the founders) because it feels like cozy, fuzzy flannel without being nubby or hot during sleep.
The twill collection is produced at an historic family mill in Portugal, where generations of expertise are applied to the process. The twill bedding comes in five colors — white, navy, navy stripe on white, cream, and charcoal stripe on cream. We chose navy sheets; pillowcases in both white and navy; and a white duvet cover that drapes beautifully.
Brooklinen has been our go-to bedding ever since we moved into this apartment almost two years ago. It’s a Brooklyn-based company founded by husband-and-wife team Vicki and Rich Fulop. Their designs are simple and classic, and their mission is to make the highest quality product for the best price. All of Brooklinen’s bedding is also certified free of harmful chemicals.
Bonus for all readers: Brooklinen is giving Cup of Jo readers $20 off with code CUPOFJO20, plus free shipping. You can see the whole collection here, if you’d like.
Thank you so much, Brooklinen!
(Photography and styling by Heidi’s Bridge for Cup of Jo. The paint color we used was Calamine. This post is sponsored by Brooklinen, whose bedding we use every day. Thank you for supporting the brands that support Cup of Jo.)
My room growing up had light pink wallpaper and I always loved it. I’m thinking I’ll have to convince my hubs that we should have a pale pink bedroom too. I’ll try the beautiful woman line if he’s not buying what I’m selling.
The bedroom looks beyond amazing. The soft pink hues gives the room an airy and spacious look. Also I liked the rocking chair (the throw cushion looks cute also) and the smattering of books on bedside table. Overall the bedroom gives off cozy vibes which I think is the most important trait of an ideal bedroom. Looking forward to your next posts.
Where’s the rocking chair from? I love it!
thank you! it’s from DWR.
The pink looks so cozy…great choice!
That rocking chair/pillow/wall color combo is incredible
Love the pink! Looks great!
So glad you went with the pink! It looks incredible!! And all the accents you picked are fabulous.
I adore the pink! I do not adore the bright blue with the pink.
I love you guys but sadly, I’m in agreement. I don’t think the shocking blue and light pink go. Pretty on their own though. ?
I have been dying to know whatever happened with the box! So thankful for a resolution. :)
Also, LOVE the pink (and I am not a pink person at all).
The pink walls look gorgeous! Definitely just like a hug! Really soft and beautiful.
This inspired me to go ahead and get these pink sheets:
http://www.target.com/p/organic-cotton-printed-sheet-set-300-thread-count-threshold-153/-/A-13712146#lnk=sametab&preselect=51388314
I’m nesting in advance of having my second child and I know how crucial fresh sheets can be to a night-sweaty postpartum mama. I love the pink and blue combo- I’d like to find some indigo pillowcases or shams, maybe kantha quilt ones. Any ideas?
So happy about the removal of that box-thing! Just mount a sleek tv on the wall and cover with some nice material if you don’t want to see it. Or create a shallow built-in for the TV (and books)? YOu go girl.
It looks so beautiful- I love it! I was wondering if you have any suggestions for search terms on ebay to find a similar style nightstand? Thank you again for sharing your lovely home!
I feel your apprehension! We bought a custom, BRIGHT upholstered pink bed from Room and Board from a Swatch, and had to wait THREE agonizing months before we actually saw it. It is gorgeous, and completely makes the room. The best part? My husband actually talked me into it! I was going to go for gray. I’m so glad he did!
I hope your pink walls give you so much joy ❤️. Thanks for sharing your beautiful life with us!
I knew it would be inside!
me too : )
Omg, just finished reading The Nix (pictured in the ‘before’ shot). SO GOOD!
Yes! the pink changes through the day and evening, so you get all kinds of shades and feels. Alex scores major big with that comment! Men, take notes! Alex, you could start a masculinity column!
The pink looks so lovely in your bedroom! Although when I read the name of the pink I was surprised….it reminds me too much of having chicken pox as a kid hahaha. I’m guessing other people have more positive associations with calamine lotion or it wouldn’t have become the name of a paint colour! Love the pop of blue in there, too!
I had a similar thought! Only I thought of mosquito bites and poison ivy!!
About 10 or so years back I painted my living room a really pretty light grey/beige color named “Urban Putty”…which sounded horrible but was so lovely. They really need to broaden their focus groups for color names!
Alex for the win with that comment!
Looks really lovely! Toby’s portrait is absolutely show stealing. I would add long ecru curtains to add some height to the room.
It looks so pretty and inviting — so happy you went with the pink (and found the remote)!
We also went with a pale pink in our family room, which gets the least amount of light, and I love it. We have it on two walls, and then have two different wallpapers on the other walls (which added some nice texture and visual interest). It’s here, if you’d like to see:
http://kellygolightly.com/colorful-palm-springs-family-room/
You’re so right about how it changes in the light. Half the time it reads as white, the other half as pink, which I love!
I am bookmarking your blog, because OMG your house is amazing!!!
That is gorgeous!
It looks gorgeous. I am seriously contemplating offering you a home exchange (I live right by a playground! My neighbours are very nice! You get regular visits from my mother-in-law, oh boy!).
Love the new room. It looks wonderful and peaceful and calm all year round. Wishing you and your sweet family all the best and an amazing holiday season. Love to your sister and her family as well. Lots of strength for her in the holiday season. XO from the Netherlands.
I just knew the pink would be lovely! How refreshing
But, wait a minute. I had deducted from the first post that the remote was actually INSIDE the cabinet. Am I the only one who had figured it out? Or maybe I didn’t understand well the whole story sonce English is not my first language?
what is your floor covering? is that sea grass, jute? it looks like it is installed like carpet, right? do you like it for walking on barefoot or sitting on?
I grew up in the south and pink business or dress shirts for men was a standard – and I still love a pink dress shirt on a man today. It makes them look seriously confident as well as kind and trustworthy – that’s my take on it anyway.
Yesss, Farrow & Ball wins again! They have the most perfect color palette.
I love it. :) I had pale pink walls growing up and went through a stage where I didn’t want them anymore. Then I went through off-white (actually, my mom went through that), and then for some reason my parents and I decided it would be a good idea to paint my bedroom blue then sponge a pattern over the walls in a lighter blue. It is still like that to this day…
WAIT. You found the remote and still got rid of the tv cabinet?!? Nooooo!!!!!!!!!!!
So lovely! Our new room is black so it’s neat to see the other direction! The campaign desk against the pink totally sold me! :)
Where is the lovely pale wood bedside lamp from?
anthro from a few years ago xo
Love the new look!! Where did you get the pink pillow you have on the bed and the pillow that is sitting on your blue fabric and wooden rocking chair?
the pink pillow is IKEA i think from a while back — the newer pillow is from blockshop:
https://www.blockshoptextiles.com/collections/pillows
Great job! All the accessories like the picture over the bed look so much better with the pink walls!
You should bronze the remote and frame it…
hahahaha
Love the color so much! Do you leave your window without any cover at all times of do you have some sort of shade if you want the room darker?
we just shut the shutters at night (they fold into the window)
Sorry I meant mattress!
Is it still a Leesa?
Thanks for any info!
What brand of king bed do you have? All the research is killing me!
i love our bed! it’s the modernist bed from abc carpet & home.
This is really pretty. In your photos the pink looks to be a lovely pale, understated shade- would you agree? On the Farrow and Ball website some of the photos with that color look to have much more pink in them.
it’s so interesting that you noticed that, claire! the woman at farrow & ball store told us that the color would feel less pink in our room because it’s a pretty dark room with less direct light; and the room also faces north. the paint would feel pinker if it were a bright, sunny room. fascinating, right? totally worth trying samples on your walls, since the light really changes things!
That’s really good to know! We are going to paint our guest bedroom a pale pink. I originally wanted navy, but it’s an interior room with one window and doesn’t get a lot of light. Pink it is then!
We have a south-facing living room that we painted pink (Gentle Blush from Benjamin Moore) and I think the pink actually looks lighter in full sun, and more deep and rosy in the evening with the drapes closed and the lights on. We absolutely love our pink living room – it was my husband’s idea.
that is very interesting! thanks for the feedback. You’ve got my decorating wheels turning…
Finally the reveal! I’ve been waiting with baited breath to see which color you chose. I decided to paint our master Peignor but this pinkier color is so pretty too!
It turned out great Joanna! I love the pop of bright blue on your pillows and sheet, it really balances things and keeps the space from looking too girly or precious. So fun that you took a risk and picked this over gray :)
I love the color and I love the Brooklinen luxe sheets. My husband and I are both mostly always tired by the time the weekend arrives but we are planning to wallpaper the dining area next year. So excited! I like the Hygge and West designs.
What happened to your wall sconces? And do you like the Brooklinen throw?
we took out the wall sconces momentarily because i wasn’t sure if they would give enough light if we went with darker paint. but we are going to hang them back up now that we went with pink! :)
I have to say, I feel such kinship with this group of readers learning I’m not the only one relieved to have closure about the lost remote/tv cabinet situation. Cheers!
&lovely paint choice. Thanks for keeping sponsored posts so classy! ?
Love the new color and its name! Joanna, you may already be aware of this, but ballet dancers often apply calamine lotion to their pointe shoes in order to make them matte. It’s called pancaking your shoes.
Just wanted to share that fun connection, since you’ve posted about your love of the ballet. :)
what a cool fact, E! thanks for telling me!
It looks lovely! Did you get rid of your sconces? I’m wondering about the reading-in-bed situation. ?
It looks beautiful! And just have to say that we recently got the Brooklinen luxe duvet cover after trying out too many other duvet covers (my husband and I are both really picky about softness), and it’s THE BEST. Plus, they shipped it to London for free within 2 days, woohoo!
Lovely! I bet that’s really nice in the winter light. Where are your nightstands from out of curiosity?
they’re from ebay xo
Beautiful color choice. I like that it has blue undertones, making it come across as more of a pink-lavender.
This is incredible timing. We just bought the luxe sheet set last night (thankfully we had another promo code to use) ;) I’m can’t wait for them to show up!
can we finally, in 2017 (for the love of god) stop assigning colors to gender roles! seriously–pink is not a “girl” color anymore than blue is a “boy,” color. the idea that people asked alex that question–i am sure in all seriousness–and the fact he “scored points with that dated answer–i mean, come on.
oh it was all in fun! our boys wear pink, have pink cars, etc. but i hear you and will try to make sure this doesn’t come across on the site!
Of course he scored points, he called his wife beautiful!
I thought Alex’s answer was very sweet.
I agree with you but also had to chuckle at your comment because to me, pink is very much a manly color. My dad, the manliest man (eye roll but it’s true) I know, has a favorite color and it is light pink!
Wow. It looks warm and cozy. I love it. Also, Ha ha ha on the remote. Did you manage to put all the pieces back together?
we didn’t! we didn’t want it in the room anymore anyway, so we just kept the TV.
Loove the pink (high five to Alex!). I’m glad you didn’t chose Grey. Pink. Is so calm and lovely.
It turned out lovely! I love it when a paint color changes through the day and the weather, it just gives so much life. Was also gonna ask about the rocking chair but saw you commented already; such a bummer when something pretty is not comfy! And the story of Toby growing into the picture, awwhh
Where are your gorgeous new bedside tables from?
they’re used from ebay.
That pink matches the box when you reply to a comment, Joanna :)
hahaha maybe it was subconscious!
Such a lovely shade of pink! Your room looks so bright and airy.
Absolutely loving those pink walls, so glad that’s what you guys chose! It just looks so timeless and regal to me. You could literally switch up your decor to whatever style you wanted and the walls would still complement it beautifully.
also, despite being a lover of nubby flannel, I’m totally going to check out these twill duvet covers. A good duvet cover is a great way to change the look of your bedroom when you get bored!
I love the before and after, showing the warmth of the pink. Can you tell me where your got your bed (or is it a headboard). Love your new place!
thank you! the bed is from abc: http://www.abchome.com/shop/20thc-modernist-queen-bed-1432481
wow this looks great!
Thank you for sharing the resolution of the TV box/remote saga! For whatever reason that really stuck with me and I’ve wondered about it many times since reading the initial post!
Me too! But now, what happened to it? It’s not on the pictures, are we to assume once you took it apart it got damaged and so you had to get rid of it? I gotta know haha!!!!
yes, once we took it apart we just kept the tv and called it a day :)
I’ve got to say, I love your writing and the topics you choose – I often am startled reading the day’s post headline thinking, wait, did she know that I was just thinking about that?? However, what really keeps me loving and recommending this blog is that you’re so darn REAL. I actually skim over or skip entirely the native advertising posts in other popular blogs because I just, well, don’t trust the review if financially biased and also because I prefer regular content. However, it’s your authenticity that makes me trust these more – besides, how would I learn about the remote control update otherwise?!? :) Thanks from a delighted reader.
what a lovely comment, thank you so much, sarah xoxo
Literally made my day getting closure on the TV cabinet lost remote situation lol.
same! :)
hahahaha
Not kidding, I have wondered about the tv cabinet situation many times. Lol the closure feels so great!
I love how the blue sheets really pop against the pink walls – it’s a good contrast.
Also, I’ve had a TV in my bedroom since I was 16 (almost 20 years) and it’s the worst habit ever. It feels impossible to break. Personally, I prefer no electronics in a bedroom, but it’s just me so I like to keep the phone nearby.
The pink is beautiful. I’m glad you ended up with something you both love.
I have to admit, I have wondered more than once if you ever found the remote to the tv cabinet! Ps. Love the paint color.
That pink is scrumptious! I’m glad it worked out so well.
Do you mind sharing where you got the rocking chair from? I love it!
yes! it’s the risom rocker from DWR. i have to say, it’s not *that* comfortable because the back is so straight. i might recommend looking for a glider if you’re going to watch tv in it, rock a baby, etc. :)
The other night as I was falling asleep and one hundred different thoughts were floating through my brain, I was like, “I wonder if Joanna ever found that remote!” Ha!
So glad you’re keeping us updated on very important matters!
hahaha love that, alexandria :)
I love Alexandria’s comment and echo it — these are the random sorts of things that I think about too, especially while trying to fall asleep. Critical world news!! :)
ps Seriously, glad you found it.
I was just thinking about this the other day and was like, “Come ON, Joanna! Don’t leave us hanging!” SOOOO relieved to have a resolution on the important TV box saga ;)
It looks so beautiful, and love the colour combo of pale pink and navy.
On the TV in room question – we really wish we could have one in ours (or at least WiFi … long story) because at least if you fall asleep watching something you’re already in bed! You don’t have to wake yourself up
that’s a good point, lisa!
Love the pink and love Alex’s take on it!
May I ask where your great gold and black throw pillow is from?
Thanks!
oh yes! block shop, they are awesome: https://www.blockshoptextiles.com/collections/pillows
they have really cool prints, too: https://www.blockshoptextiles.com/collections/woodblock-prints
It’s so pretty and calm! We have one grapefruit (pink) wall which my fiance actually chose, makes the whole room light up. I am not allowed to call it pink though… boys.
Where did you get the two chairs? Love them both!
lol BOYS!
the rocker is from dwr, and the blue chair is anthropologie (we actually have them as our dining chairs, too!)
who did the watercolor of the little boy? it’s beautiful and looks a lot like toby. ha. I couldn’t tell if it was a portrait of him or if the boy pictured just happens to have his similar sweetness.
you’re so observant, ellie! it’s actually a funny story. i bought it years ago as a kind of you-did-it gift for myself after a hard/intense year at work, it’s from the incredible painter Kim McCarty and i had loved her work for so long. toby was a tiny baby and looked nothing like this. but over the years he has basically grown into this little boy! so crazy, right? people now think it was a commissioned work of toby, but it wasn’t at all!
https://www.kimmccarty.net/
I assumed the watercolor was Toby, too!
That is an amazing story! I was wondering if it was Toby also. He will love to hear it when he gets older.
Where did the beautiful rocking chair come from? I’m in search of a stylish one for nursing!
i would actually recommend a glider — the rocking motion is really long and fluid and feels so good while nursing (versus a tighter, smaller back-and-forth). here’s a lovely one! https://www.westelm.com/products/graham-glider-g667/
We have the Graham Glider and I recommend it to all my friends who are expecting!
I bit the bullet on the Graham and it makes me SO happy to see you recommend it and read positive commentary. I’m eagerly awaiting its arrival…it’s the most expensive piece of furniture I’ve ever bought, but I anticipate spending a lot of time in that chair!
BAH! That Elaine GIF is perfect :)
It looks great! I love the rocking chair, where is it from (and would it be comfortable for nursing)?
thank you so much! to be totally honest, it’s not that comfortable — the back is too straight. i had a crate & barrel nursing chair with my boys and it was SO soft and comfy. (congratulations on your little one!)
Great choice! It looks so soothing :)
Lovely room! But my favorite thing in this piece is the story of where you found the remote!
hahaha what a saga it was! when we found it, anton was like, “i TOLD you it was in there.” lol
Looks great! And I was totally curious still about the TV cabinet. Haha! Glad it got resolved (and looks much nicer without it!).
I love it! And I am so relieved to know what happened to the TV remote!
I would love to know where you got the print above your bed. It is really lovely.
haha, thank you! the painting is from my friend jen garrido, she is so talented!
http://www.jengarrido.com/
she also has this pretty one for sale right now, fyi:
http://www.shopjengarrido.com/product/limited-edition-reproduction-of-css-6
I took a look and love her work. I might have to give my husband a big hint about a Christmas gift! Thanks!
Finally! Some resolution to the missing remote! I can now sleep soundly at night… ;)
hahahahaha
That is the perfect color. You know, after your first post on this, I loved the pink so much that I put it on my life bucket list, “Have a pink bedroom someday”. I can’t paint the walls in my rental apartment anything except flat cream, but a girl can dream, right? :)
Your bedroom look lovely …. would you like to pop across to London and sort out mine? Please!
that actually sounds really fun, ruth :)
I support this as a future post! Would love to see a restyled room in London!
This would be an awesome post! A one room home makeover
Looks fantastic! I’ve been on an endless hunt to find just the ride shade of pink to paint my room too — I love the shade that you went with! Could you please share the name of the color? Thank you!
yes! it’s calamine from farrow and ball: http://us.farrow-ball.com/calamine/paint-colours/farrow-ball/fcp-product/100230
I am usually not a big fan of pink, but I must say that the paint looks great. It does give a warm feeling to the room
WOW the pink really brings out all of the colors in the room and infuses a great warmth. If that isn’t a testament to the power of putting a little color on your walls, I don’t know what is.
It looks lovely! High-five to change!
I looooooooove it! We have had a pale pink bedroom for two years and it is my favorite. I actually got the idea from when your sister’s apartment was redone by Jenny Komeda. My husband loves it too- it’s so soothing and calming at night, and the room glows in the sunlight. Yours is beautiful.
so fun to hear, sarah!!
This is a lovely colour you’ve landed on (I don’t know if I could pick a colour named for a medicine, but bravo.) My only note is that the switch covers really don’t match. They look too industrial…you may want to look at replacing them with a ceramic alternative.
great idea, kaitlin! thank you so much, i didn’t even really know you could do that, so i really appreciate the tip! i’ll look into it today.
Joanna, Anthropologie has really beautiful switch plates, but beware, you’re opening a huge can of worms–there are so many to choose from!
I thought these stuck out a bit too, but another designer trick I’ve read about is to use wooden switchplates, which you can paint to match the wall color so they don’t stand out visually. I will be trying this soon to see if it really works!
You won’t believe but we are in middle of home renovation and I wanted to have white walls. But after looking at your bedroom, this is not bad one!
Thanks for sharing.
It’s so beautiful! Calming yet cheery. Definitely going to consider this one for our new house <3
i can’t tell you how cozy it is in real life. i’m so happy with it!!
It’s PERFECT!
YESSSSSSSSSSSS! i just bought this sample for my downstairs WC! can’t wait to convince my hubby it also NEEDs to be in our bedroom!! xx
you’ll love it!!! changes so much with the light.
That wooden lamp! Where did you get it?
(also: love the pink.)
Also very into the lamp and would love to know the source!
it’s from anthropologie 3-4 years ago!
This is obviously a great post, but I am SUPER CURIOUS where you put that TV situation! Inquiring minds want to know! ;)
hahaha the electrician took it apart, and we recycled the wood. then we kept the TV but aren’t sure where to put it! i’m hesitant to have a TV in our bedroom because i don’t trust myself not to watch every broad city/insecure/master of none episode until the middle of the night :)
I have always wanted a little TV in the kitchen so I can watch cooking shows and comedy specials while making dinner. Egh egh??
