Have a Relaxing Weekend.

Boat by Chris Ozer

What are you up to this weekend? We’ll just be knocking around the neighborhood, and I’m getting a pedicure on Sunday night. (Any polish recommendations? I usually get this color.) Hope you have a good one, and here are a few fun links from around the web…

The secret to small talk.

The Big Sick, a new romantic comedy, is getting rave reviews — here’s the trailer.

(The movie is based on a true love story.)

What an elegant wedding. Wouldn’t you love to be a guest?

The cutest little car.

A charming short animated film about the clitoris. Thumbs up.

I’m excited to wear this dress on our summer vacation.

Accidental Wes Anderson locations, haha.

Is anxiety the new depression?

A real-life guide to buying wine. (Ask the wine store owner: “What are you drinking?”)

Beautiful.

Plus, two great reader comments:

Says Em on Instagram Stories: “I really enjoy Jen Gotch of ban.do fame. Her stories are funny and real and often follow her through the depths of her depression. It makes me feel better knowing these lovely, fun people we watch online don’t always have easy lives, but somehow manage to carry on anyway.”

Says Meg on skipping wedding traditions: “My sister didn’t do bouquets either, but we each carried a bunch of lavender down the aisle. It was super pretty, super cheap and smelled lovely. I still have mine dried in my house.”

It’s a girl by opi! Love it

  2. Oh man, I’m super uncomfortable with mental illness in general (and anxiety and depression in particular, because those are the diseases I deal with) being seen as any kind of trend or part of the cultural zeitgeist. It feels…icky. I know, KNOW that’s not the intent, and I get it- more people are seeking help, and the world we live in likely contributes to all kinds of anxious feelings. But- and I feel like such an asshole saying this- having one of my mental illnesses referred to as the “new” (read: trendy) version of my other one feels really minimizing.

If anxiety is now at the forefront, great! More people getting help! Normalizing mental illness! But the “new” tag makes it feel so transient- like this is just the hot new complaint enjoying its time in the limelight while the next one waits in the wings. Like my Klonopin is nothing more than this season’s hot accessory that I can pop while I’m wearing my McQueen skull scarf and it all fits together, instead of what it is: one of a handful of medications I take that allow me to be a productive member of society.

I’ve been working really hard since I had my 72 hour hospital stay (long overdue, but happened last November) on doing my part to reduce the stigma of mental illnesses (you can read about it on my blog, linked below) and to get people to see them as what they are- diseases. And, well, back to what I started with, I guess…it feels icky to frame the uptick in people seeking help for anxiety as a trend, replacing the old, out of date depression.

Anyway…just one certifiable (and certified!) person’s opinion. Let me know if you ever need/want a guest blogger on the subject :)

I read the anxiety article the week it came out and found it incredibly insightful – didn’t put together till right now that Alex wrote it. Your blog is 100% a place that makes me less anxious and happy. You contribute daily to making me feel proud and confident!

    • Sasha says...

This is true for me too, a little sunshine filled meadow in my day. I usually find something to help me feel hopeful about the human race here. Thank you coj contributors and commenters.

    • Yes, yes, yes! I write my blog and read a lot of others but I always come back to COJ, often multiple times a day. I love the articles and the comments. It really is something special. :)

  4. Lo says...

    That Wes Anderson link!!!!

    Lo

  5. Laura C. says...

Really love your blog and it would be great to meet you one day.

  6. Hi Joanna, I have been following your blog for many years and I’m so excited that you’ve mentioned our work now! We photographed Johannes and Francois’s wedding which was featured by MissMoss. Glad you liked it and hope you’ve had a great weekend!

  7. Kara says...

Funships by Essie – perfect pinky orange always says hello summer to me.

  8. The Big Sick looks good. Had not heard about before, so thanks for posting the link to the trailer. Definitely interested in seeing it. Also, do very much enjoy your site. Thanks, Martin

  9. I almost always get a pedicure with a polish in the red family. I tend to wear a lot of neutral-colored clothing, mostly black with some grey and navy. I also tend to wear minimal, very natural-looking makeup. So, the red nail polish is my fun, colorful little detail.

  10. Still love your Friday roundups!

  11. Lauren says...

I will usually do one coat of Essie “French Affair” with one coat of “Limo-scene” on top. The perfect soft pink for lighter skin tones!

  12. I’ve always loved “Elephantastic Pink” by OPI. It’s always a perfect pedicure color. :)

  13. Lauren says...

Sorry I’m Fizzy Today by OPI has been my go-to lately. Perfect for summer!

  14. Great post!
I don’t have an go to color, I usually pick different ones.

  15. jeannie says...

I loved both those comments! Readers’ comments are one of the things I really look forward to on Friday along with the great roundup.

  16. Jaime says...

I went for Essie- cabana it’s like a bright teal so cute….probably cuter with the tan I’m looking forward too…(rain, rain go away).

  17. Kazuko says...

The “Secret to small talk” article is so interesting – especially when you’re an introvert and extremely shy like me. I didn’t know about that condition.
Always looking forward to your weekend post! xo

  18. Thank you for sharing this :) I love these kind of posts, they keep me occupied all weekend if I make my way through them slowly and properly. Oooo, I would love to be getting my nails done soon – I might book an appointment. I’ve been loving the colour white at the moment – You can’t go wrong :)

    Have a great weekend!

    Chloe

  19. Susan Magnolia says...

I love Kumail! He and wife seem so sweet and funny. The Big Sick is one film I want to see in the theaters with my partner. We laugh and cry through normal movies but I have a feeling this one will be quite a tear jerker. Need to get a sitter!

  20. sc says...

Loving all the reddit references lately!!

  21. My future mother in law mentioned The Big Sick while we were hiking today, it sounds right up my alley! And I LOVE that clitoris video, haha. I also love that you talk about women’s sexual health issues easily!

  22. mimi says...

Party In My Cabana by Opi. A happy color just like the name.

  23. Cajun Shrimp by OPI is my go to during the summer/vacation months! …and when I miss summer during the winter months-ha!!

  24. Lisa Davis says...

I also love Essie clambake – its the perfect orangey red and looks great as your feet get more and more tan.
Joanna, I also love your blog – I often see you / your husband / and boys in the neighborhood and always feel like I know you and should say hi!
    Best wishes to you all.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

please do say hi!!! i would love to meet you! :) :) :)

  25. MJay says...

Essie’s penny talk is one of my fav summer colors for pedicures. It reminds me of a melted penny and the copper color looks great with a tan.

    • i agree with you

  26. jackie says...

i just wanted to write to say how much i love your blog. i have been reading it since high school and now i’m 24… i really feel you (and now everyone else who writes for COJ) have helped me grow up and navigate all the changes that come with being an “adult”. i live in NYC and my family lives in Florida and as weird as this may sound, i always feel like i’m going home to hang out with my mom when i come to this site. it’s so comforting and whenever i have one of those “knock you down days” in NY it’s nice to come to your site and find a little bit of solace in this crazy city. that may be a weird way to describe it but i wanted to say thank you for that!

  27. emily says...

I love Essie Marshmellow on my toes. I always do 2-3 coats. Is so clean, natural and looks like a less stark French pedi. I always get compliments!

  28. Maywyn says...

The Big Sick! He was on tv last night. Hilarious sense of humour. I’m looking forward to the movie. Love that summer dress.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

can’t wait to see the movie!

  29. Sharon says...

I feel compelled to comment on a pedicure color. Figure out a color that makes your skin look glorious and stick with the same one. So boring I know. But once I stopped trying different ones that others recommended and settled on a flattering pinkish nude shade, I’ve never been happier staring down at my pretty toes. I wear a lot of bright colors, and having a neutral nail color (same goes for hands) keeps it all in balance. I feel toenail polish is like a great foundation. Once you find your perfect one (and perfect shade!) never leave.

I also LOVE that your comment box catches spelling errors. Bless you Cup of Jo team!!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      good advice, sharon!

  30. Julie says...

OPI color “Mod About You” is my go-to!

  31. Sarah says...

essie Sunset Sneaks. I like the bright oranges for summer!

  32. Erin says...

A little saddened that anxiety is being viewed the way it is. I have it and find it fairly debilitating at times. I am so thankful for my anti-anxiety medication which now allows me to sleep at night and not always feel so paranoid in every day life.

But wine. Wine is a much happier topic. I cannot wait to try pet-nat!!!!

  33. Tania says...

Clambake, by Essie! The opposite of neutral, but I kinda love a bright toe, and the orangey-ness of it makes it feel fresh and modern.

  34. Lacey says...

    Yay for a new, GOOD rom-com! I can’t wait.

  35. Kassie says...

Oh my gosh, I was about to recommend my favorite polish, but it was only one color over on the amazon scroll. Haha, but I love it! Topless & Barefoot.

  36. Wendy Leonardo says...

The Big Sick looks really good! I haven’t been to the movies in more than a year, mostly because I only want to see a good rom – com and I haven’t seen any around. Looking forward to this one!

  37. Tracy Patil says...

I really like the one you picked. My fave is vibrant pearl by Mavala. It’s a good neutral. Have a lovely weekend!! :)

  38. karen says...

OMG! “Sigmund Freud, the number one enemy of the clitoris” this little film is delightful. xo

    • Joanna Goddard says...

hahaha i loved the little face too ;)

  39. Ellie says...

Currently have Hip Anema by Essie on my toes…it’s just a happy summer red! I also love Guilty Pleasures, Bordeaux, or Russian Roulette by Essie.

    • Colleen says...

I just looked at Russian roulette and it’s gorgeous! More Js pale speed: Essie Topless and Barefoot.

  40. Vanessa says...

This is just to say I love your blog. :) You guys do such a wonderful job. I’m pretty sure my husband is sick of me starting stories with “So I was reading this blog and…” only to learn that it is ALWAYS, always, *this* blog. He (rightly) thinks that if it appears on Cup of Jo, I want to talk about it, or I want to try it, or I want to go there, or I want to buy it, etc. etc.

ANYWAY. Just thought y’all should know.

    xx

    Vanessa

    • Vanessa says...

PS I’m also getting a pedicure this weekend and opting to go with a color that’s just like the wines I like: big, bold, red. ;)

    • Kirsten says...

Vanessa, I’m the same way! All of my stories begin with “so there’s this blog I read…” and I’m always referring to CoJ.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

aww, you guys, your notes made my day :) thank you so much, that means so much :)

    • Karen says...

Just want to join the Cup of Jo bandwagon love. You keep this 40 something Mom of a 5 year old current. My 20 something nephew was wearing these cool shoes the other day. I exclaimed, “Are those Allbirds!”. I might just have to get a pair.

    • Lauren E. says...

DITTO. At least once I week I start a story to my husband with, “So you know that blog that I read?”

  41. Dominique says...

I love the short film by the lovely Lori Malépart-Traversy! So happy to see it’s being shared far and wide :)

  42. Roxanne says...

The Clitoris movie was made in Québec, not France ;)

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      thank you, roxanne! changing now!

  43. KL says...

I got the best tip from my local wine shop a little while ago: “wine is like farming, the same grape will taste different when grown in different places (like a carrot would if grown in two different soils), so learn what grapes you like, and the region they’re from.” I had never thought of it that way. I was so busy searching out labels I recognized and knowing, “ummm I think I like Pinot Noir from Oregon?” Since then, I have tried a few wines and kept a list of the GRAPE and the region versus the general TYPE of wine. It’s so much easier buying wine I know I’ll like.

    • This is SUCH a great (or grape- haha) tip! :)
