Have a Relaxing Weekend.

Oh man, I’m super uncomfortable with mental illness in general (and anxiety and depression in particular, because those are the diseases I deal with) being seen as any kind of trend or part of the cultural zeitgeist. It feels…icky. I know, KNOW that’s not the intent, and I get it- more people are seeking help, and the world we live in likely contributes to all kinds of anxious feelings. But- and I feel like such an asshole saying this- having one of my mental illnesses referred to as the “new” (read: trendy) version of my other one feels really minimizing.

If anxiety is now at the forefront, great! More people getting help! Normalizing mental illness! But the “new” tag makes it feel so transient- like this is just the hot new complaint enjoying its time in the limelight while the next one waits in the wings. Like my Klonopin is nothing more than this season’s hot accessory that I can pop while I’m wearing my McQueen skull scarf and it all fits together, instead of what it is: one of a handful of medications I take that allow me to be a productive member of society.

I’ve been working really hard since I had my 72 hour hospital stay (long overdue, but happened last November) on doing my part to reduce the stigma of mental illnesses (you can read about it on my blog, linked below) and to get people to see them as what they are- diseases. And, well, back to what I started with, I guess…it feels icky to frame the uptick in people seeking help for anxiety as a trend, replacing the old, out of date depression.

Anyway…just one certifiable (and certified!) person’s opinion. Let me know if you ever need/want a guest blogger on the subject :)

i just wanted to write to say how much i love your blog. i have been reading it since high school and now i’m 24… i really feel you (and now everyone else who writes for COJ) have helped me grow up and navigate all the changes that come with being an “adult”. i live in NYC and my family lives in Florida and as weird as this may sound, i always feel like i’m going home to hang out with my mom when i come to this site. it’s so comforting and whenever i have one of those “knock you down days” in NY it’s nice to come to your site and find a little bit of solace in this crazy city. that may be a weird way to describe it but i wanted to say thank you for that!

A little saddened that anxiety is being viewed the way it is. I have it and find it fairly debilitating at times. I am so thankful for my anti-anxiety medication which now allows me to sleep at night and not always feel so paranoid in every day life.

But wine. Wine is a much happier topic. I cannot wait to try pet-nat!!!!

I got the best tip from my local wine shop a little while ago: “wine is like farming, the same grape will taste different when grown in different places (like a carrot would if grown in two different soils), so learn what grapes you like, and the region they’re from.” I had never thought of it that way. I was so busy searching out labels I recognized and knowing, “ummm I think I like Pinot Noir from Oregon?” Since then, I have tried a few wines and kept a list of the GRAPE and the region versus the general TYPE of wine. It’s so much easier buying wine I know I’ll like.
