What TV Shows Are You Watching?

What TV Shows Are You Watching?

The other day, my mom texted me, “I finally know how you live alone…”

“One little word,” she said. “HBO.”

She’s on to me.

My laptop now feels like a dear roommate — it tells me jokes, sitting on the kitchen counter as I cook dinner, and stays up late with me, taking up a little too much room on my bed. The phrase “TV will turn your brain to mush” often echoes through my head, but my shows are so good, I don’t care. If TV is an art form, I’m the ultimate patron.

Lately, my friends and I chat about Big Little Lies as if it were our own life. The glossy miniseries, based on the bestselling novel of the same name, takes place on the rugged Monterey coast. The story is told through the eyes of three mothers, whose lives unravel to the point of murder. Critics have mixed reviews, but the New Yorker describes the series as “a reflection on trauma; at its best moments, it makes risky observations… full of strong performances.” Whatever they say, we can’t get enough.

I’m also hooked on Girls (the new season is the best yet, come at me!), The Mindy Project (did you see the episode where Mindy turns into a white man?) and Chef’s Table (Nancy Silverton’s dessert made Julia Child cry!). I’m currently counting down the days until the new seasons of VEEP (April 16th), Master of None (May 12th) and Insecure (July 23rd).

So many shows, so little time. On nights when I can watch, I feel like this.

What TV shows are you watching right now? Any recommendations? Please share!

P.S. The 101 best written TV series of all time, and six great podcasts.

I’m sure, somewhere in the galaxy of abundant COJ goodness, I saw a snippet about a TV show with a hilarious scene: polite woman trying to queue patiently in a New York deli/bagel shop, then finally losing it in hungry exasperation. Any tips, please? I’d love to track it down yet I simply can’t find it…

    • Joanna Goddard says...

oh my gosh, i can’t remember that!!! i’ll ask the team on monday (everyone else is out today!)

  2. Caitlin says...

I had to come back to this post to comment because I just came across this article: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/08/13/arts/freaks-and-geeks.html?smid=tw-nytimes&smtyp=cur

I love your posts about television and was elated when you referenced the above scene from Freaks and Geeks. Not only is that such an amazing show, but that moment is one of my absolute favorite scenes in television history. It’s so touching and emotionally stirring in all these nuanced ways. I loved growing up in the early 90s because we had some of the best, most creative and quirky TV shows. I so identify with Bill in that scene. Just sitting alone, enjoying the routine and comfort of the familiar characters and storylines.

  3. Berti says...

since not mentioned yet – WONDERLAND. an australian show about a group of friends living in an apartment building. good looking guys and great drama

  4. Sofia says...

I loved, loved, loved “Big Little Lies” and “Insecure”. I can’t wait for the second season of Insecure as well. I binged through “Famous in Love” and now I am currently watching “Harlots” and “American Gods”.

  5. House of Cards is going to feel especially relevant this upcoming season, with our current political climate haha. I also can’t wait for Game of Thrones to return! UGH I’m dying!

  6. Drake says...

For those interested in the Young Adult genre, and LGBTG+ characters, I really recommend Eyewitness from USA. It’s a great crime series that centers around two highschool boys who are in love. Another great show is SKAM, a Norwegian drama that has some great characters – one particularly memorable scene was when Sana, a muslim high school student, was talking to her closeted friend Isak about Islam’s stance on homosexuality. Really moving stuff here!

    Love the blog!
    Drake

  7. Misty says...

Love this post! I needed new shows. Currently just started 13 Reasons Why on Netflix. Other shows on NetflixI highly recommend —
Bloodline- fantastic show about intense family secrets with Kyle Chandler and Sissy Spacek. So so good. First episode starts out slow but man it gets good.

Rectify- intriguing show about a man wrongly convicted of a murder at age 18 and spent decades on death row before DNA proved him innocent. Originally aired in Sundance channel.

  8. Margaret says...

Can you update your podcast recs? Puhhhlleaaazzeeeee???

And please add Why Oh Why!

  9. Kate zimmerman says...

    THIS IS US. ???

  10. Carolina Bu says...

I will forever recommend for laughs: Parks and Recreation, Master of None, Rick and Morty.
For drama: Luther, The Crown, Sherlock (the know their stuff)
For feeling good: The Great British Baking Show, Call the Midwife, Friends.
I always find myself coming back to these fail-proof goods. So many people on here love The Great British Baking Show too! Lol we’re not crazy it’s totally valid!

  11. Oh man, I loved your Freaks and Geeks reference. If you were a Freaks and Geeks fan you might like Silicon Valley (Bill’s in it). I too can’t wait for Master of None. But the show I was most impressed with this past year was Atlanta on FX. I thought it was the most original and interesting show I had seen in years. Donald Glover created it and stars in it AND right after the season ended, he dropped a new album (he’s also a rapper/singer under the name Childish Gambino) which was absolutely phenomenal. I’m a huge fan but he’s such an overachiever he also makes me question what the hell I’m doing with my life.

  12. sam says...

Everybody’s covered my current favorite shows but wondering if there are any other The Good Wife fans out there. Juliana Margulies is fantastic, and while watching it I developed a serious crush on Josh Charles. And it’s got Chris Noth and Alan Cumming. Great acting.
Also, an oldie but goodie….Veronica Mars. So many good lines. Such a guilty pleasure.

    • Megan says...

Good wife for life!! Watched all seasons while I had a newborn/was tied to my couch nursing. It’s now my go to when need a cozy but still exciting show!

    • Rachael says...

Love the good wife! I am currently re-watching it on Netflix – the first time I’ve ever watched a show twice.

    • I just finished watching the last episode of the last series of the good wife :) what a co-incidence that your comment was the first in line :) I loved it and the way josh charles’ last episode.

    • Clarity says...

The Good Wife is my all time favorite show. The acting is fantastic and the writing is top notch. I was so in love with Will Gardner…I’ve never fallen in love with a TV character. I’ve begun watching The Good Fight, which is the sort of next generation of The Good Wife. It has some of the same characters and the same creators. It has real potential. And the cast is almost entirely women and people of color, which is great to see.

    • Aga says...

I am loving the spin off, The Good Fight!

    • onepotliving says...

I miss this show sooooo much!!! I rewatched it three times and everytime I am so sad to see how Will went from being a genuinely beautiful man, to a vengeful, sad person. I love love this show.

  13. Lee Malone says...

I’ve fallen in love with Black Mirror on Netflix. It’s like a techie Twilight Zone for the new Millennium. Really well done.

  14. AH there are so many good TV shows..
I just binged This is Us and cried every.single.episode. It’s one of the best shows I’ve watched in awhile.
Can’t wait for this Sunday’s Big Little Lies.
I LOVE, LOVE Jane The Virgin! Everyone on that show is amazing and it makes me smile every week.
I’m watching One Tree Hill with my girlfriends for the first time. We have a weekly podcast about it, Tree Hill Talk and I’m really enjoying it!
I just started Dawson’s Creek and I’m re-watching The Office with my husband.
But my forever and always is The OC.

  15. Genna says...

TEACHERS! Simple humor for those nights when you need to tune way out. Just finished (binging) season one of THE MISSING; incredibly well written. Agree with most – this has been the best of GIRLS yet so if you’ve set it aside, worth a retry!

LOVE Chef’s Table on Netflix; intoxicating imagery. VICE on HBO; raw and informative. The new PLANET EARTH is my sleep machine. Not sure why I haven’t seen this one mentioned yet either – SHAMELESS.

Will be starting the Great British Baking show this weekend, with thanks to this post!

  16. We recently watched Transparent, and it was INCREDIBLE. Also, I am over a decade late, but we are binging all of The West Wing. It’s so incredible, and poignant given the current political craziness.

  17. Annalily says...

The TV game is STRONG right now.
Sometimes I feel guilty for wasting an hour a night on a show, but its honestly so nice to escape and retire my mind at the end of the day! Currently faves… Call the Midwife, Homeland, Girls, The Americans, Game of Thrones, The Crown, Better Call Saul
and Forever gone but not forgotten… Breaking Bad, Friday Night Lights, Madmen, The Sopranos, Sex and the City, The Wire
Excited to try Big Little Lies!

    • Sarah AuMiller says...

We are tv twins! These are all my favorites! :)
The Americans never gets enough love, in my opinion! But, I have to ask, what about Downton Abby? You probably have watched it but if you haven’t please do, based on all your other shows, you will love it, I promise!

  18. Marlena says...

I can’t stop watching Billions, and over the summer I binge watched the Outlander series n the recommendation of a friend. Just loved it and can’t wait for the next Season. I probably mentioned this here before but I loved the Series with Matt LeBlanc Episodes very funny and smart!

    • I watched the first season of Billions while I was pregnant and my husband was away for the weekend. I couldn’t believe how much I liked it!

  19. Aga says...

LUTHER is sooo good. Idris Elba and Ruth Wilson are such a great actors!!!

  20. Bailey says...

SO into Chef’s Table too! The Nancy Silverton one has stayed with me as well as Adeline Grattard from Yam T’Cha on Chef’s Table France.

Other obsessions from the past few years have been Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, The Great British Baking Show (I know, sounds riveting, but it’s actually addicting) and we just got sucked into The People vs. OJ Simpson–I especially recommend this if you are a Serial fan.

I also finally buckled down and watched all 7 seasons of Gilmore Girls over the last 6 months or so. I enjoyed it before but had only ever seen random episodes here and there. I cried when it was over…and the revival isn’t really doing it for me…

  21. Sasha says...

Oh gosh, my husband just reminded me of this one, Rake. The original Australian version, saw on Netflix a while back, hopefully it’s still on. It’s horribly inappropriate. But my gosh, so ridiculously funny, addicting and, dare I say, heartwarming? If you watch, you’ll know what I mean. The “hero” is the least heroic character you can possibly imagine, but you’ll root for him anyway.

    • Sasha says...

Oh, don’t come crying to me when you see the dog episode…I warned you!! ;)

(The dog does not die, I’d never be ok with THAT, lol)

  22. Beverly says...

I happened upon a series called “Monarch of the Glen” and fell in love – watch it if you can.

    • I’ll try, but you guys have to watch murder T.V. Shows! Start with murder she wrote then move on to something else! I love murder show it’s so exhilarating!

  23. Becky says...

I’m OBSESSED with Big Little Lies. Currently reading the book too. Also, just finished up the latest season of Fixer Upper. Ready for Real Housewives of New York City and Project Runway to start back up.

  24. The Missing (binge watched this a few months ago and I still remember it fondly.)
The Americans – been watching it from the start and it just keeps getting better & better.
Broadchurch – initially didn’t think it needed a third series but it’s gotten me all over again.
The Walking Dead & Game of Thrones – started watching from the beginning since I read the comics/book.
Grace and Frankie – with those leads how can it not be anything but awesome?
Mindy Project, New Girl, Bones, Madam Secretary: they’re all my “guilty pleasures.”

I just started watching Legion and that’s been very good so far.

  25. Amanda says...

Grey’s Anatomy, Halt and Catch Fire, Younger, Good Behavior, Law & Order SVU, and…. (Naked and Afraid.. lol )

  26. Hanna says...

So happy about the new season of GIRLS (didn’t like that much about the previous ones) The episode with Matthew Rhys was perfection! He’s also one half of THE AMERICANS, which I think , is sadly underrated. My absolute favourite has to be FLEABAG, Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a genius, made me laugh a lot! So sad that PLEASE LIKE ME didn’t get more seasons…

  27. I started Girls from the very beginning when we switched to comcast and got HBO!!!! I am so into it and already on Season 5.

I’m a big Walking Dead Fan since day 1, also currently really into Breaking Bad, just started season 3.

I read Little Big Lies, so I definitely need to start the show soon.

  28. Jess says...

Did anyone say Catastrophe? I have watched both seasons like six times but the new one is coming in April!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

oh my gosh, me too!!! it’s the only show i’ve watched twice in a row, beginning to end.

    • Christy says...

LOVE IT SO MUCH. There’s a new season!?

    • Genna says...

Yes! This is such great news!

    • Christine says...

Love that show so much!!! Can’t wait for the new season :)

    • YES SO GOOD

  29. Anna says...

Friday Night Lights was excellent. A bit dated, but The Wire remains my favorite series. I also really liked Freaks and Geeks and Twin Peaks. Oh, and the first season of True Detective.

    More recently:
    Lovesick
    Longmire
    The Crown
    Love

I’m loving all these other suggestions…

  30. Cherie says...

Love all these suggestions, looking for a new series right now! I loved loved loved Stranger Things (mix up of the Twilight Zone, the Goonies, Dr Who…and like nothing else), really looking forward to Season 2!

  31. Marianne says...

I watched Taboo, and I loved it. If you’re a fan of historical dramas like Rome and The Borgias (guilty!), then this is definitely the show for you.

    • Taylor says...

Taboo was SO good. I love Tom Hardy and he was amazing in it. Also recommend Peaky Blinders!

  32. Merry Rower says...

Since I didn’t see much mention of them, I have to give huge shout-outs to the shows of Louis C.K.!

“Louis” (FX) is truly amazing art; funny, poignant, challenging, utterly original and entertaining. In a lot of way, “Girls” and “Louis” deal with many of the same themes, bookended their different ages and sexes.

In addition to Louis, a few folks mentioned “Baskets” (FX), a show he produces that is also a complete, compelling original. Definitely check that out.

But the one I want to shout from the rooftops is “Better Things”!!! It stars the wonderful Pamela Adlon from “Louis” (and “Lucky Louis”, a short-lived but worthy Louis C.K. show you can find on HBO) as a hip single mom of three daughters trying to keep it together in showbiz L.A. So good. If you like “Catastrophe” or “Love”, you don’t want to miss “Better Things”.

  33. I’m still hooked on Scandal, The Big Bang Theory, Riverdale, Criminal Minds and of course Grey’s Anatomy. I do think I ought to give Girls a shot and I absolutely love the Mindy Project.

  34. Graes says...

My family has recently been watching episodes of BBC’s “Only Connect” (that includes my 13-yr old & 11-yr old) on YouTube. Don’t ask me why.

And I’ve been on a Vera fix on AcornTv while folding laundry.

    • Deb says...

My fiance and I watch Only Connect and feel really pleased with ourselves if we each get one answer a show #setthebarlow (it’s HARD!)

  35. Teresa says...

Call the Midwife is my new new obsession. The Crown was amazing, too. Can’t wait to start Big Little Lies!!

    • Kaitlin says...

I am such a BBC nerd and TOTALLY love Call the Midwife (and really, any BBC historical show… Poldark? Anyone? :) )

  36. Merry Rower says...

“Love” on Netflix. 2nd season is up. Funny, intimate, emo in L.A. What’s not to love? And the new season of “Homeland” is killing it. Twisty, tight, timely. Best season since the first one.

    • Daynna says...

Really? I fell out last year and haven’t been back. But I used to LOVE it.

  37. Jenny says...

The Mindy Project, This is US, Gace and Frankie (finally!!), Modern Family, Blackish, House Hunters and waiting for a new season of Episodes. I guess I watch a lot of TV…

  38. Paige says...

Mad Men for the fifth time all the way thru. I feel like they are my disfunctional family, and I am totally on board with each characters journey from beginning to end. I don’t believe there will ever be a greater series. (Come at ME!)

    • Lin says...

      Couldn’t agree more! ??

  39. Taylor says...

This Is Us and How to Get Away With Murder! Also, I loved the clip from Freaks n’ Geeks, which is another favorite! Haha.

  40. Never too late to get into Buffy :)

  41. HILLARY says...

Don’t judge me here… but I still LOVE Survivor haaha, my husband used to make fun of me when we first met, but now he’s just as into it as I have been since 2002.

    • Stella Blackmon says...

Hahahaha! My friend Lynsey has been re-watching Survivor. She’ll randomly drop Survivor phrases and it makes me laugh so much.

    • Lynn says...

Me, too! I watched it for a long time, then quit for several years and picked it up again last year. It a classic! Probst has those classic lines that kill me!

  42. Kate says...

    The OA on netflix!!

  43. Emily says...

The Feud – Joan Crawford vs Bette Davis! FX.

    • Nadine says...

Oh my gosh yes. Really liked Victoria. Still watching Designated Survivor, but don’t get all of it. Would watch This Is Us…guess I could record! And husband likes Naked & Afraid.

  44. clare says...

Veep is fantastic! Baskets (FX) is also really special, but make sure to start it from the beginning! There have been 2 10-episode seasons so far.

  45. Katrina says...

I loved Good Girl Revolt on Amazon. I heard it’s not coming back for a second season but it’s pretty great. Very empowering.

    • Jess says...

Me too! I heard the people who cancelled it were all men. Sigh.

    • Kaitlin says...

SAD, I so loved that one!!!

  46. Cara says...

Those are basically my 2 shows right now too! BLL is the best and Girls is kind of meh but I want to see it out.

Also, (don’t even want to admit this) I’m watching Vanderpump Rules and just finished Summer House and kind of love them both.

  47. Olivia says...

Halt and Catch Fire! really beatiful

    • Caron says...

^I second this. Halt and Catch Fire features two total badass female lead characters and the aesthetic is total catnip for 80’s babies.

  48. Lindsay says...

“Big Little Lies” is stunning and mysterious…. love it so much. “Girls” obvi… but the first season is still my fave. If you are into mysteries I would highly suggest “The Night Of” on HBO, “The Missing” on Starz, “Doctor Foster”, and “Top of the Lake.” I regretfully still watch “Walking Dead” and wish it would end. I will watch the last season of HBO’s “The Leftovers” and also, of course, gearing up for GoT. I watch WAY too much TV but no shame :-)

    • Christy says...

The Night Of was so well done!

    • sam says...

Top of the Lake! Loved that it upended conventional crime/mystery plotting. And the Holly Hunter cameos were so weird and wonderful.

  49. Broadcast: Blackish (SO GOOD) and Brooklyn 99

    Cable: Legion (my husband’s favorite)

Netflix: MARVEL’s Defender series and Grace & Frankie (my #1 favorite!)

  50. Becca says...

Ohh, I am late to this but I have to chime in with one that I don’t see anyone else listing – Occupied! So great – the progression of the events and characters from the beginning to the end. So far only one really great season but I understand they are filming a second one now. Also, just for laugh out loud silliness – Lilyhammer. So funny!!

  51. Krista says...

OMG – 100% agree to this season of Girls being the best. I love it so much — they’re finally coming into their own.

  52. jenny says...

    The Americans! Fargo!

The Leftovers, for some really dark shit and cinematic brilliance. Better Call Saul, some of the most realistic portrayals of run-of-the-mill attorneys I’ve ever seen. Master of None, simple yet clever.

Billions, I hate to love and love to hate. The Circus, when I can handle politics. The Crown, when I just want some “easy watching.”

And ditto on Girls (going out strong!) and Big Little Lies (totally addictive)

  53. Jody says...

Friday Night Lights will always have my heart. The character development is just SO GOOD. I felt very invested in them just part way through Season 1. Other favorites: The Affair (warning – very stressful to watch with your significant other), Girls (this last season seems like the best so far), Homeland, Big Little Lies, Parenthood (from the same people as FNL), Arrested Development, The Killing. Man I have watched a lot of TV!

  54. This Is Us was great. I love Big Little Lies and can’t believe there’s only one more ep. Can’t wait for S2 of Insecure.

  55. Cee says...

I’ve heard great things about SKAM too but also CALL MY AGENT! I can’t get enough of it! It centers around an office of actors agents in Paris. It’s the perfect escape.

    • Tara says...

SKAM is amazing. I enjoyed it so much more than I expected to and thought each season was better than the last. And the fourth season starts airing Monday!

  56. Liz says...

Legion is the most exciting and crazy marvel/superhero/DC story I have ever seen on the screen. It is so good and mind bending! Also the cinematography is beautiful.

  57. Amy says...

    Jane the Virgin!
Omg and that episode on the Mindy Project with Mindy as a white man was the best!!!

  58. Addie says...

Counting down the days until the 3rd and final season of Bloodline. Can’t wait to find out how it ends!

    • Misty says...

Love Bloodline! I would watch Kyle Chandler in anything.

  59. Sammi says...

I just discovered the Americans…such an interesting portrait of a marriage! I love discovering new-to-me shows that already have several seasons available to stream :)

  60. Joann says...

No one has said ‘Please Like Me’ on Netflix! Josh is brilliant.

    • Angela says...

I loved the first two seasons. I had trouble getting into the 3rd, gonna try it again though.

    • Renee says...

‘Please Like Me’ is THE best.

  61. Monica says...

Watching and loving The Affair and Billions!

  62. K says...

    Shows I love:

Fleabag – The one woman show from the Ed fringe turned into a series about a hilarious and totally lovable yet deeply flawed London lady.

Catastrophe – Hilarious couple dealing with parenthood.

UnReal – such, such, such a guilty pleasure. Pure trash, but brilliant characters (and they’re female leads).

People Just Do Nothing – About some chavs running a pirate radio station, so funny. #ChabuddyG

This Country – BBC mockumentary about a rural village – again, hilarious.

Search Party – who-done-it/comedy showing how awfully self-involved millennials can be.

Thirteen – what happens to a girl after she escapes from a home she has been held captive in for 13 years.

    (Frasier – always and forever)

    • Rachael says...

Omg, I really love Chabuddy G!

    • Kate says...

      He’s the best!

  63. Kara says...

I second The Good Place with Ted Danson and Kristen Bell, and Trial & Error with John Lithgow for some seriously silly humor. Real life is hard these days, I only want comedies!

  64. Liz says...

I love that moment in Freaks and Geeks. Both divinely heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. Sigh.

  65. Danielle says...

Designated Survivor is also a great show! My family sits to watch it together every week!

    • Leah says...

My 15 year old son and I are totally hooked on Designated Survivor!

  66. Katie says...

I rarely say that the movie is better than the book… but Big Little Lies has been so good! I’m hooked! I can’t wait for the last episode, but I also don’t want it to end!

    • Stella Blackmon says...

I feel the same way, Katie!

    • Cherie says...

I agree! Couldn’t get into the book, absolutely loving the series

  67. T says...

Hotel Beau Sejour on Netflix if you like a murder mystery!

    • Nancey says...

I am currently obsessed with this show. I am up to Episode 8 and can’t sleep.

  68. I’m watching The Mindy Project and Modern Family. My mom is watching Big Little Lies and loves it!

  69. SMS says...

Parenthood (if you like This is Us, Parenthood is the original tear maker), all Marvel series on Netflix, Catastrophe on Amazon prime- if you like Lovesick you will love this show, Silicon Valley, Grace and Frankie, Love (Netflix). There is too much good tv on.

  70. ES says...

I’ve been watching cooking shows a lot, especially Martha Bakes and Jacques Pepin Heart & Soul, on PBS. Martha Bakes is great if you’re a serious baker, and want to learn new techniques – it’s very instructional and well-produced.

Also, I’m all about British dramas like Victoria, Midsomer Murders, and Doc Martin.

Lastly, I’m addicted to Antiques Roadshow. SO interesting to learn about antiques that people have gotten from the most ridiculous sources (basements, attics, Dumpsters, barns, etc.!). It’s crazy how much some things are worth.

    • Tori says...

I think you would like The Great British Baking Show! Seems to be a mix of your interests, it’s so charming.

  71. Anna says...

Kimmy Schmidt! And Master of None has already been mentioned. Can’t wait for the new season, May can’t come soon enough.

  72. Cameron says...

This is Us – if you loved Parenthood you will probably love this show even more! That’s pretty much it for regular TV.
On Netflix…Bloodline! Its a slow starter that takes a minute to get into, but stick with it. SO good. Also, Narcos. And why has nobody mentioned Wentworth??? Omg, everyone please go watch it now. I kept passing it over on Netflix because I though that after Orange is the New Black, I didn’t need another female prison drama. Wrong! This is totally different and ten thousand times better, I can’t get enough!

  73. Stella, I too live alone and I just upgraded to my first new TV in 10 years. I finally got a HD TV and it’s a whole new world! I just watched Lovesick on Netflix, an endearing British rom-com. Highly recommend!

    • Erin says...

the lead is Johnny Flynn, please look into his music! He’s absolutely amazing

  74. Gabriella says...

I’m watching most of those shows you mentioned, plus looking forward to Fargo and Better Call Saul coming back. Have also been watching Baskets, The Last Man on Earth and, guiltily, Riverdale!

    • Sarah says...

The Last Man on Earth is one of the funniest shows in recent history. Cheers!

  75. Kate says...

I cannot say enough about The Leftovers. The second season is, hands down, the best season of TV I’ve ever seen. My husband always tells people it’s depressing, but it’s a gorgeous meditation on loss and the unknowable. Amazing performances, incredible story.

  76. Maria says...

    Poldark

    • Maria says...

Oh, also The Crown–so good. And agree about British cops shows on Netflix.

  77. Jami-Lin says...

I’m *so* excited for the new Twin Peaks on Showtime!!! I’m also very into Homeland, which is very eerily echoing current politics…

    • Lisa says...

Yes – Homeland very frequently gets too close to reality for comfort

So true Jami-Lin! I was just telling my husband it feels like we’re living in a real life Homeland.

  78. Kellie P. says...

Hahaha love the Freaks and Geeks reference! Soooo accurate.

  79. Sasha says...

Schitt’s Creek, on Netflix. If you like “best in show”, et , movies, it’s some of the same folks. If you have teenage kids….please watch, you will pee yourself laughing.

  80. T says...

Everyone who’s sad The Killing is over should watch Bron/Broen! (The Bridge). It’s the original Swedish/Danish show (but there was an inferior American remake on FX). It is amazing. It’s not even about the mysteries, although they’re compelling… The chemistry between the two leads, and the connection you especially start to develop with the strange Saga (the female detective of the pair), plus the gorgeous moody visuals of Malmo/Copenhagen… in the 3rd season, you realize how much it’s built up into something emotionally powerful. One of my top TV shows ever.

    • LOR says...

I didn’t find it on Netflix? Where can you stream it?

    • Christy says...

Thanks for this, one of my all time favs and so it seems I need to watch Bron/Broen. How did you view it T?

I also like This Is Us, A Season with Florida State Football (my alma mater), Girls, Crashing, Big Little Lies, The Affair and lots of Classical Baby: The Music Show and The Art Show for my 2 year old.

Basically HBO and Showtime with some Netflix thrown in. LOL

    • Michelle says...

I loved The Killing, and The Bridge (Bron/Broen – watching from Canada on Netflix). The best thing about The Bridge is how much action they pack into one episode, unlike The Walking Dead where there’s one event per hour long show like a slow-moving soap opera. The writing and characters are so good. Also the British detective shows – Happy Valley, Line of Duty and Broadchurch. Fargo was excellent, can’t wait for the next season. The Fall. Rectify sounded really boring to me but I loved it and got so attached to some of the characters. Very emotional. But I think the best thing I’ve watched recently is The Night Of. The story and acting were superb.

    • Nancey says...

The Bridge is on HULU. my favorite show ever.

  81. K. says...

patriot is a 10 episode on amazon – so original and good. Hard to describe but intrigue, suspense ( which are usually not my genre) but mixed with wry funny, laugh out loud writing, truly original characters – no cliches here – all I can say is try – you’ll be hooked.

  82. I love The Americans. It starts slow but it’s great! A few newish ones I’ve watched are Fleabag, Sneaky Pete, and Good Behavior. All good. I can’t wait to see Big Little Lies.

  83. Nancey says...

I am currently loving Happy Valley, but I have enjoyed:
    The Killing (So much love)
    Broadchurch
    Top of the Lake
    Hinterland
River (surprisingly different and touching and odd but wonderful)
    Goliath
    Jessica Jones (got addicted!)
and I am also watching This Is Us which is so different than any of the others I’ve watched but I am still loving it.

  84. Lauren E. says...

Ooooh my gosh, that scene from Freaks and Geeks! It totally makes me tear up. My husband is a stand up comic and he said that scene IS his childhood – coming home from school to an empty house, eating junk food, watching comedy. So sweet.

I watch so much TV it’s embarrassing.
    Currently watching:
The Sopranos (for the 4th time… it’s that good)
The Marvelous Mrs Maisel (SO SO GOOD! I hope it gets picked up)
Crashing (both the Pete Holmes series on HBO which is mediocre, and the series on Netflix which is incredible)
All the Bravo trash (VP Rules, RHOBH, Southern Charm…)

    Currently anticipating the return of:
    Peaky Blinders
    Insecure
    VEEP

  85. Jennifer says...

We also love all of the British cop shows on Netflix, but our latest watch was the most recent Dave Chapelle standup, also on Netflix! Hysterical. We stayed up until 1 am watching it, and I NEVER do that.

    • Jennifer says...

Oh, and also Blackish! Love that show. The writing is clever and I’d love to be the Traci Ellis Ross’ best friend…

  86. Emily says...

Gosh, so many comments, not sure if this was mentioned yet. But “This is Us” is amazing. I just caught up on Hulu. My very favorite show of all time is “Thirtysomething”. Ken Olin from Thirtysomething is a producer of “This is Us”. He and many others from Thirtysomething are also involved, and everything they touch, turns to gold!

    • Jill Palumbo says...

I loved, loved, loved Thirtysomething. My girlfriend named two of her children after that show (Brittany and Ethan).

    • bisbee says...

LOVED Thirtysomething! I am also hooked on This is Us. I love family drama. In fact, I miss Parenthood too!

  87. Erin says...

    Nashville

    • Taylor says...

      Love this one!

  88. Paula says...

EVERY single British cop/detective show; literally every single one. They are the best. And tons of them on Netflix. I got into the Americans and The Killing, they are both slow but good. When I want mindless washing dishes or cooking, basically stuck in the kitchen shows I put on gossip girl, or frasier, or friends.
I’m not much into baking, and British cakes look and sound pretty dreadful, but the Great British Baking show has me on the edge of the seat (including my husband who cares even less about these things). We cry, laugh, and bite our nails-the show is SO good.

    • Nancey says...

Oh, the Killing, OBSESSED! my favorite show ever. I am currently into Happy Valley (love), Hinterland (LOVED). it’s endless this obsession. I love deep, dark rainy murder shows. what is this saying about me?

  89. Loribeth says...

I get up early on Tuesday mornings so I can watch new Mindy episodes! She is my favorite fictional human and celebrity.

    • Loribeth says...

And OH!!!! Has anybody watched The Good Place? Straight up genius and all my favorite comedic elements! You think you’ve got the show figured out and then BAM season finale turns the show on its head!

    • Stella Blackmon says...

      She seriously is the best!

    • Danielle says...

YES! I love the Good Place. It is one that I think plays much better in a binge format though. And I liked it even more the second time I watched it

  90. Berni says...

LOVESICK. Awesome show, funny and romantic at the same time.

    • Delphine says...

Cant wait for Season 2 !

  91. Abby says...

Drama: Narcos, Big Little Lies, Better Call Saul. Comedy: Master of None, Odd Mom Out, The Mick, Crashing, Girls, VEEP, Silicon Valley

  92. Emily M. says...

Offspring. It’s Australian, it’s extremely moving AND funny, and there are 6 wonderful seasons on Netflix. xo

    • Cherie says...

Love the original Offspring as well but the comeback season was a little flat

  93. Caitlin says...

The Honorable Woman! I think it’s still on Netflix. I have watched it two times and it is easily the best show I’ve ever seen. It is mesmerizing and hauntingly beautiful. The soundtrack is amazing. Everyone should watch it!

    • Cathy says...

I agree. Maggie Gyllenhaal was great. I can watch it over and over again.

Unfortunately Penny Dreadful ended after three seasons but it’s another show with great acting.

    • deanna says...

The Honourable Woman is AMAZING. More a mini-series than a TV show per se, but I can’t second this recommendation enough!

  94. Nathalie says...

If you haven’t seen Love on Netflix, you’ve been missing out. A 21st century romance/friendship thing that feels raw and real. Season 2 was just released and it’s SO funny.

  95. Cortney says...

Bloodline on Netflix has me going through withdrawal since the last season, and Catastrophe on Amazon was more reality than reality tv. How did they manage to get everything I think out of my brain and into a show?!

  96. Ronny says...

you gotta check out Crazy Ex-girlfriend if you haven’t. it’s a musical comedy but it touches on issues like obsession, mental illness etc.

    • Danielle says...

      I second that one!

    • Gina says...

      Love that show!

  97. Laura C. says...

Just Scandal and Outlander. I don’t have time to watch any more. And BBC Sherlock of course.

    • Danielle says...

YES! Anyone who hasn’t seen Sherlock should just stop everything and watch it.

    • Jessica says...

I like Sherlock but I love Elementary. Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu as Sherlock and Watson are to die for. And the acting is incredible. Just really great all around.

  98. Bethany says...

Did anyone watch TABOO? My husband, son and I loved it and hope there will be a second season. Tom Hardy! Also, loving GIRLS, the Americans, Big Little Lies. Can’t wait for new episodes Better Call Saul, Veep, Master of None, the Leftovers, Happy Valley, Broadchurch…really, I don’t watch that much TV!

    • Danielle says...

      Broadchurch!! So well done.

    • Maja says...

Taboo is my favorite show right now. And there will be second season :)

  99. T says...

Currently enamored with Mozart in the Jungle on Amazon prime as well as the new season of Grace and Frankie on Netflix :)

  100. Talya says...

The Americans – amazing spy series set during the Cold War, but really about family and marriage dynamics under extreme circumstances – my husband and I are hooked.

Also, This is Us (best thing since Parenthood) – wonderfully written, fantastic believable characters – inter-generational love stories.

    • Stella Blackmon says...

I can’t wait to check these out, Talya! Thank you for sharing. xoxoxoxo

  101. Haven’t watched any of these shows, I’m too hooked on Youtube!! But I need to start a new show, thanks for the recommendations!

    xx, Hannah

My boyfriend and I recently finished The Killing on Netflix, which was fantastic. The leading actors are seriously amazing. Now, we’re on to Homeland, which we love just as much. I’m taking notes on these comments because we’re nearing the end, wondering what we’ll do with our lives once we’re caught up!

    • I loved The Killing! Have you watched The Americans? So so Good!

    • Nancey says...

I will never find another show like The Killing! I am so sad it’s over. Holder!!!!!!

    • Courtney says...

My boyfriend and I finished The Killing then moved on to Homeland as well! We just started season three on Hulu and we’re obsessed. Seems like we’re on the same track for shows :]

  103. E says...

I just finished watching SKAM. It is a Norwegian TV-show about a group of high school students in Oslo. I recommend this show because it is so real and so so different from your typical tv shows about young high school students. This show deals with so many important topics : mental health, body image, sexual abuse…
Each season shows a different main character. The school that it is filmed at is real high school in Oslo… I think they are doing an American version of it…but I highly recommend to watch the Norwegian one at least for now… To really see the European young generation growing up… All the characters are just amazing and SO real.

    • LOR says...

where did you stream this from?

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      wow, this sounds fascinating!

    • Andrea says...

There is also a Canadian version called “This is High School”. As the mom of a 14 year old daughter I found it very fascinating – a glimpse into the lives of real teens.

    • Lisa says...

SKAM is fantastic – I’m Swedish so I’ve watched them all in one go once they were released in Sweden. I’ve read somewhere they the show will NOT be released outside of Scandinavia as its growing out of control, but I might be wrong. A little side note: the actors where all (or most) unknown before this and haven’t made any appearances in media until pretty much season 3, to keep the illusion that they are “real people” and not actors.

    • Gurran says...

You will love SKAM, seriously. I think first season about Eva is fantastic. …and it kind of gets better as we move on to Noora and Isak. See it, and please write about what you think.
