An Ode to Boursin

An ode to everyone’s favorite, Boursin cheese, an “entry into the creamy, salty, herbaceous world of adulthood.” (And remember this?)

Best Instagram Vintage Shop Na Nin Vintage

A secret to finding awesome vintage clothes, especially jeans: Na Nin Vintage. She posts pieces many times a day on Instagram; when you see your secondhand soulmate, you just send her a direct message to buy.

face wash

A beauty tip: Cup of Jo editor Megan recently made a no-brainer change to her bedtime routine that improved her whole night, she says. “Instead of waiting until 11 p.m., I wash my face immediately when I get home. I no longer put it off until I’m grumpy and tired; later on I head to the bathroom with a smile since all I have to do is brush my teeth.” We’re in.

Citrus Salad

The most beautiful (and easy!) citrus salad, drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with salt and dark chocolate.

Pod Save America

Ex-Obama staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, Dan Pfeiffer and Tommy Vietor are fascinating and hilarious on their new podcast, Pod Save America, a “political podcast for people not yet ready to give up or go insane.”

P.S. 8 amazing podcasts, and an underwear trick.

  1. Totally addicted to Pod Save America now… and Pod Save the World. Before reading about it here I think I’d listened to one podcast in my life, now i’m hooked!

  2. courtney says...

oh mi gosh! Thank you for this! Pod Save America!

  3. Sara Hummer says...

YES to Pod Save America! So smart, so snarky.

  4. Alex says...

Pod Save America is like young, hip, real West Wing!
I work in a hospital – shower on arrival home is the only way!

  5. Hannah says...

I gave a listen to pod save America, and I have to say I was immediately turned off! They came off so smug and laughing at their jokes, which I just didn’t find the humor in. I agree with all they say, but just did not like the delivery. Meh, I’ll stick with political gabfest.

  6. Great tip about washing your face immediately! It really does make a difference.

  7. Melanie says...

I like to wash my face, floss, etc. while my girls are in the bath or shower. They like that I’m nearby and if I get sleepy during story time (which is always), I’m ready for bed!

    • Annie says...

This is exactly what I do! And brushing my teeth earlier helps me avoid snacking at night.

  8. AR says...

The beauty ritual as soon as I get home is what I try to do too! Though my son distracts me and then dinner needs to get made etc haha.

  9. shopgirl says...

Love Boursin, only that heavy aftertaste of garlic bothers me ….

  10. shopgirl says...

O, I make the same citrus plate, only the sweet version, for dessert; just sprinkled with some brown sugar and cinnamon. So light! and great after some heavy lunch or pasta…..

  11. Alisa says...

Pod save America is so entertaining! Igot hooked when it was Keeping it 1600 and it keeps me sane. I appreciate the snark, I must admit.
If they’d like to expand their pod offerings, I’d legit listen to a bachelor pod (as they’ve joked about) :)

    • Katy says...

Not the same guys, but have a listen to “here to make friends” – a huffpost podcast recapping bachelor eps. The girls are great.

  12. Na Nin is so wonderful!

  13. DIANA says...

    Wait,
Is that not Seth Meyers far left?? That chin hold! The profile!

    • Stella Blackmon says...

Hahaha, yep! They had Seth Meyers on as a guest. It’s a great episode.

      Stella xx

  14. Lauren says...

Yes to Pod Save America! Listened to my first podcast today after the gentle prodding of my colleagues and it is amazing. Stay Woke peeps!

  15. Jelly says...

Hang on… do people not shower before going to bed? I can’t imagine getting into bed with a day’s worth of stuff from the outside on my body!

    • Megan Cahn says...

I’m a shower in the morning person. I need it to wake me up!

    • Jennifer O. says...

I shower at night. I can’t imagine going to bed dirty. And I save time in the morning.

  16. caroline says...

I wish I could wash my face as soon as I come home! My house tends to be drop-in central (which I love) but in the evenings friends and family do come by and I have trouble skin, so I feel a bit uncomfortable without at least some tinted moisturizer on. But man do I detest having to do it late at night when I’m super tired!

  17. Hi! This is Tommy Vietor from Pod Save America. I just wanted to say thank you for including us here and for the nice words in the comments. My girlfriend Hanna loves your blog so I’ve been hearing about CupofJo for years.

    All the best,

    Tommy

    • Lexi Mainland says...

That is the best praise, Tommy. Thanks so much for your comment; we are all huge fans of the podcast over here.

    • Karen says...

I LOVE THE POD! Also excited about Pod Save the World. Thanks for making great, life-giving, sanity-saving content.

  18. #imstillwithher says...

Go ahead and brush your teeth early, too. It keeps you from snacking late in the evening!

  19. Guylaine says...

Don’t forget about flossing!!!! Such an important aspect to oral and general health. I do it right after supper while I’m helping my kids brush and floss. It’s great modelling for them and you’ll be much more likely to make it a part of your routine then waiting till 10pm. (fyi- I’m a dental hygienist but still…)

  20. Beth says...

Love Pod Save America! It is the greatest. And I am definitely going to use Megan’s tip and start washing my face when I get home instead of later in the evening.

  21. Du pain, du vin, du Boursin…
    (It all rhymes in French)
Some bread, some wine, some Boursin
    Their long-time jingle

  22. Lauren Fields says...

Pod Save America is a fantastic podcast!! My fiancé and I are so hooked, with everything going on and crazy stories coming in from all sides its nice to have them fact checking and confirming what’s real and what isn’t.

  23. amy says...

I can’t wait to listen to Pod Save America!

    • Lexi Mainland says...

      It’s really excellent. Enjoy!

  24. Sarah Beth says...

I would love to wash my face (or even take off my work clothes!) when I get home, but as soon as I get in the door the mad dash is on to organize dinner, feed my toddler, get her ready for bed, and nurse her to sleep, in about an hour window! my husband and I feel like two chickens with our heads cut off. But lately, he has done the dishes while I put her to bed, and I put on my comfy clothes when I’m done, and then we both have our evening free to sit down and talk and try not to look at our phones too much and watch a show. However you do it, having that little wind down routine feels so luxurious!

  25. Camila says...

Lexie, you need your own blog!

    • Lexi Mainland says...

      Haha, thank you, Camila!

  26. Kirsten says...

POD SAVE AMERICA IS THE BOMB. I listen to lots of political podcasts, but recently this one is taking precedence when I’m overloaded with pods!

Also, I started listening to Call Your Girlfriend after it was suggested in a post a few weeks ago. Basically I’ve decided that all CoJ podcasts recommendations are going to be awesome.

    • Me too!! I’m now obsessed with CYG after the CoJ suggestion :)

    • Lexi Mainland says...

      I love hearing that!

  27. LOVE na nin. her brick & mortar store is 5 minutes away from me and she’s the sweetest person alive and her handmade candles are to die for.

    • Lexi Mainland says...

Lucky you – I would be in there every day.

  28. Cynthia says...

After the dishes are done, and I take the dog out, I shower, wash my face, put on my face oil and relax before bed. I like having time to relax with my husband and dog before I go to bed. The citrus salad looks yummy. Anything with chocolate!

  29. Julie says...

I feel like this earlier face washing is the skin equivalent of taking off your uncomfortable clothes (aka pants and bra) the second you get home. I dig it!

    • Megan Cahn says...

      I do that too :)

  30. Ok, following that vintage Instagram STAT, and I 100% agree with Megan – I’m always “too tired” before bed, so getting ready for bed early has been a game changer (plus, I get to lounge around in my PJs for longer…double win!).
V interested in this podcast too. Thanks for sharing!
    http://www.wonderlandsam.com

  31. Rachel says...

Thanks for the beauty tip Megan! Even though I have a gorgeous smelling cleanser and love how it makes my skin feel afterwards, I just can’t face the before-bed routine. I’m so happy you’ve figured it out for me! (forehead slap!)

  32. Ruth says...

I have been showering right after we put our daughter to sleep instead of waiting until right before I go to bed — at that point I’m just tired and either do it fast and don’t really relax or I take too long and then it feels like bedtime is too far off. She goes down around 7:30 and then I shower and am in my pjs by 8-8:15. I’m able to relax and unwind a lot better!

    • Kitty says...

      That’s what I do too!

  33. Yes! Pod Save America is hilarious and makes me feel less desperate! Also! The episode with Seth Meyers is so good. Listening to him talk about the Correspondents Dinner, and his show was fascinating.

  34. that vintage instagram- thank you thank you for the hook up! what a good find.

    xo, brittany
breastfeeding friendly dresses on my blog today!

  35. Lauren says...

Also! Because I now use the entire True Botanicals line, I actually love my nighttime skin routine.

  36. Erin says...

washing my face when i get home. GOOD idea. I’m thinking more of after dinner, then i’ll just brush my teeth then. and settle in afterwards with walking the dog, catching up on tv!

  37. Lauren says...

Pod Save America is saving my life right now. In just a few episodes, these guys have really struck the perfect balance of mixing their policy and political expertise with the kind of commentary and snark that only people at their level of experience can have. I can’t wait to listen to Pod Save the World as well.

  38. Liza says...

Americans are so funny about Boursin cheese! I lived in France off and on my whole life and I hate to break it to you, but Boursin is the Cheez Whiz of France. It’s cheap and generic and I certainly wouldn’t serve it at a party. I mean, it’s yummy, and you should go ahead and enjoy, but there are way better cheeses out there.

    • Zoe says...

I lived in France to and it’s not like people there still don’t like it. It’s popular for sure! I think the point of the article is the author realizes now it’s not a fancy cheese but it’s still delicious. Mmm, now I want some Boursin.

  39. Loved this post in the midst of so much insanity. Thanks Jo! xo

  40. Elle says...

Oh man, I can NOT wash my face unless I’m about to go to sleep. I have tried, but as soon as I do, my eyes can barely stay open I’m so sleepy. Classic conditioning, I guess!

  41. Bee says...

Am straight up addicted to the Keepin’ it 1600/Pod Save the World kids. I’ve listened since their first episode and am relieved they’re continuing the conversation beyond the election results. I heard Lovett on NPR not long ago and thought for sure it wasn’t him because his interview wasn’t strewn with expletives and self-adulation. Ha!

    • Jon Lovett says...

This is Lovett. I love this comment. I can prove it’s me because I’m the only person who sounds exactly like this.

    • Lexi Mainland says...

Jon, we are star struck here at Cup of Jo. Love the podcast and hope you guys keep it going a long time.

    • Emily says...

Love the Pod! Have to admit Jon ‘straight shooter widely respected on both sides’ Lovett is my favorite. The guys are hilarious and their guests provide such important perspective and motivation to keep fighting!

  42. Marie says...

The wash your face thing: brilliant ! Read it, did it ; )

  43. Katie H. says...

I’ve never really been into pod casts, but Pod Saves America could be exactly what I need right now.

Also, happy birthday, Joanna! It’s my husband’s and mother’s birthday too. :)

  44. yael steren says...

Another great place for vintage jeans is Etsy!! I’ve found some really cool pairs of vintage Levi’s and the prices are great!! xx yael

  45. Emilie says...

I don’t like the idea of taking my makeup off right when I get home at all. I feel better and look better with a little makeup on, and I think it’s nice to look nice at home too! Here’s my tip to perk up the dreaded nighttime bathroom routine blues. I recently purchased the Luna foreo (https://www.foreo.com/) which is kind of like a clarisonic, only better. In just a few weeks my acne-prone skin has improved so much! I’d recommend it to anyone.

  46. The citrus salad looks delicious.

  47. Amy says...

I brush my teeth after dinner now. Keeps me from snacking mindlessly in the evening and instead of sitting on the couch, tired but too lazy to get up and go brush my teeth and wash my face, I just head to bed. I definitely go to bed earlier as a result!

    • Megan Cahn says...

Me too! Definitely one of the benefits :)

    • Emmanuella says...

Right?! I wash my face and brush my teeth three hours before bed because those two acts make me feel more awake/refreshed. Added bonus: my boyfriend likes to kiss my squeaky clean face when we cuddle up to watch tv or a movie.

  48. Thank you for including Pod Save America on this list. My sister made me listen to the first episode and now I can’t wait for the new episode each week. It’s helping me process all of the crazy happening right now.

Pod Save America and cheese…two essentials for the next four years.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      haha truth!

    • Kelsey says...

Totally helps me make sense of it all!

  49. Rebecca Wall says...

I have done the “wash your face first thing” a couple times and it really does feel better! I’m going to have to get back into it. Thanks for the reminder!

    • Joanna Goddard says...

it’s such a no-brainer tip but somehow i have never thought of it :) i end up skipping washing my face instead, yikes. going to try it tonight.

    • Em says...

I began washing my face before I sit down to a book or movie, after dinner, to give my skin plenty of time to absorb night time moisturizer – that way it doesn’t all rub off into my pillow…sometimes I can even fit in another application if necessary!

  50. Kirsten says...

Love the Pod Save America podcast – it is helping me stay sane – and they are about to launch Pod Save the World which will talk about foreign policy / global issues.

  51. Lauren says...

Pod Save America is great! My husband and I were both regular listeners of their former podcast, Keepin’ it 1600, before the election and are now tuning in to Pod Save America every week. Its great to have the point of view of people who have actually worked in the White House and they have all have good senses of humor which I really appreciate. Enjoy!

  52. It seems like such a no-brainer to wash my face when I get home instead of before going to bed, but I’ve never really thought about that before! Thanks Megan!

    http://objectsicantafford.com

  53. Lindsay says...

I shower as soon as I get home from work and the first thing I wash is my face. It feels so good to get all the grime off. I also find that I do more face masks in the evenings now b/c my face is already clean and my skin is looking great b/c of this.

    • Megan Cahn says...

I definitely do more face masks, too!

  54. Brianna says...

That illustration is the best. Boursin and brie feel like the most adult cheeses to me.

    • Andrea says...

If you like brie and you want to up your game, try Cambozola. Cambozola is a cow’s milk cheese that is a combination of a French soft-ripened triple cream cheese and Italian Gorgonzola (thanks, Wikipedia). Brie and blue cheese had a baby, and you can buy it at Trader Joe’s!

If you don’t like blue cheese normally, try it. The brie totally softens the taste. I take it to parties with the TJ fig and olive crackers and then stand back. People devour it!

    • Brianna says...

Thanks, Andrea. I’ll definitely get some Cambozola next time I go to Trader Joe’s (and I love blue cheese). Sadly, brie is on the migraine trigger list, so this may be a good substitute.
