Lo & Sons Weekend Bag

Do you have any weekend trips planned this summer? For years, I’ve been a huge fan of Lo & Sons, a line of travel bags designed by a mother and her two sons. I’ve used their Catalina weekend bag for years, and they just launched a new Catalina Deluxe. We asked four cool New Yorkers how they’d pack a Catalina for a quick getaway. Here’s what they said…

Hana Asbrink, a news editor and co-creator of Pantry Confidential, likes to pack for herself and her two-year-old daughter, Lana, in one bag. It makes hopping on the train to visit family in Connecticut easy and stress-free. One of the best parts of a Catalina bag is the bottom zippered pocket. You can pack things separately from the main bag — beach towels, shoes, dirty clothes, whatever! Hana puts her own clothes in the main compartment, and Lana’s clothes and diapers in the bottom pocket of the Catalina colorblock.

Ryan Kaple is a cardiologist who rides his bike every day (he actually clocked 100 miles last weekend). The new Catalina Deluxe has a padded liner in its bottom pocket, which Ryan used for his gear. That way, his bike shoes won’t poke holes in his clothes, and he won’t have to fish around to find everything he needs for a quick ride. (One of Lo & Sons’ mottos is “less fumbling, more globetrotting.”) The canvas is lightweight and machine washable, too.

Sisters, roommates and interior designers Hollister and Porter Hovey will be traveling for getaways with friends this summer. Porter kept her party clothes neat and tidy in the bottom pocket of the Catalina Deluxe — including her dress and sky-high heels. Hollister used the zippered pocket for makeup, toiletries and hair tools. (This also keeps toiletries quick to locate during airport security checks.)

Says Hollister: “I have fits with the public’s obsession and seemingly ubiquitous lack of decorum with roller bags (it always seems like a war of roller bags vs my toes!). Unless faced with some dire packing scenario, our carry ons are truly that: handles + strap, no wheels! They look so much better, too.”

How would you pack a Catalina Deluxe? The colors are beautiful; it comes in large and small; and the extras, like lots of pockets and a padded, removable messenger strap, make traveling feel easy and cool.
