Delicate Gold Necklaces

Delicate Gold Necklaces

My friend Adrienne always wears a gold necklace, and every time we hang out — or even pass on the way to school drop-off — I think how pretty and graceful it looks on her collarbone. It makes her whole outfit look feminine, even when she’s just wearing a T-shirt and cut-offs. What a lovely idea to have a necklace you wear every day, almost like a uniform.

Here are five others: box, circle, mighty, beaded and flirty.

Do you already wear one? Any recommendations?

P.S. Made me laugh.

I wear the same two yellow gold necklaces everyday. One is 14k 18″ with a yellow/White gold heart pendant. The other is 10k 19″ with a break apart charm that says daughter. My mother wears the other half which says mother. I only take them off for cleaning ?

  2. Shar says...

I just got this one http://jookandnona.com/products/necklaces/ from Jook and Nona with “happy” on it. It’s perfect with everything. I wear it with a black maxi dress, a t-shirt and jeans, tunics, dresses, tank tops, swimsuits, everything. I also like that it says something.

  3. That’s so pretty!

I have always loved delicate jewellery the best.

A few years ago, my husband got me this necklace from Phoebe Coleman: https://phoebecoleman.com/products/love-me-tender-necklace

At first, I was too afraid to wear it as I thought it would break but I’ve been wearing it everyday since and get compliments all the time. It goes with everything and although I never would have picked it out, I absolutely love it!

    • Hi Jenny,

It’s Phoebe here! I am so pleased to hear this. The Love Me Tender necklace was from my very first collection and it’s still one of our best sellers. It’s great to know you are still wearing it, and that your husband has such great taste! ;-)

  5. I love delicate gold necklaces and silver necklaces too! We just launched our own line of delicate charms that can be worn as pendants. My personal favourite is the 4 leaf clover charm. They are custom 3D printed!

  6. Juliette says...

So beautiful ! Is there a link for the one in the photo ?
    Thanks :)

yes! at the bottom of the post. xoxo

  7. catbird makes the prettiest twisted chain gold choker that I wear now EVERY day. perfection.

  8. Elizabeth says...

This is very specific, but my go-to necklace while living in NYC. Now that I’m back in my hometown (shown on the necklace), I feel a little silly wearing it around. I’m thinking of gifting it to a friend who now lives far away from our hometown. http://www.janesko.com/traveler_ks_mo_necklace_p/30001.htm

  9. Mallory says...

I feel naked or like something is missing if I don’t put on a necklace before heading out the door. I have a few different simple gold ones and usually I’m drawn to one for a month or so and then will end up switching it up for another chunk of time.

  10. Jackie says...

Is there a link for the one in the photo?? So delicate.

  11. Wow these are gorgeous! Personally I have a small gold anchor that I love to have on any time, a delicate symbol of strength.

  12. So so pretty!!!
I’m a jewelry designer out of NC and layered gold necklaces are my most popular style. My website is >> http://www.erinmcdermott.com
Look under the “layers” section and you can see how I like to layer the pieces – also, if you check out my instagram, @erinmcdermott1, I’ll also show lots of examples!
Absolutely love this blog! I’be been following it since the beginning! It’s the best!

  13. Emma Dillon says...

I have worn a small gold swallow on a chain since my divorce. I too always wanted a “uniform” type pendant but I guess you only find the things you long for when you are ready! Mine was my freedom and the swallow represents just that!

  14. I have a few delicate necklaces that I switch between- a gold cross, a silver cross, a gold chain with 3 tiny beads representing 3 wishes, and my most recent is a dainty rose gold chain with an equally dainty bar with the tiniest diamonds. I just love how understated each of them are.

I have a beautiful gold necklace my husband (boyfriend at the time) bought me when we visited Athens, Greece. He has a 24K gold chain that he never takes off, and he wanted me to have a beautiful gold highlight around my neck as well, and we spent a lot of time walking around Athens going to every jewelry store to find the perfect subtle design. I absolutely consider it part of my daily “uniform” worn every day with a basic v neck tee (I probably have 12 different solid color tees I constantly rotate.) This necklace will always be one of my most treasured items I will ever own, it’s right up there with my engagement ring.

  16. Leah says...

I wear a dainty rose-gold California bear necklace every day.
I’m from California, but I don’t live there anymore, and the necklace was a gift from my twin sister, who still lives on the west coast, back home.
I love wearing it and I always get compliments on it. It’s like a sweet little nod to my home every morning when I put it on.

  17. I loooooove this kind of necklace. I actually have a couple that I wear every day as well :)

  18. Sandra says...

Love this necklace! I’m more of a silver wearer and have been using a little delicate necklace for months now. It also holds mine and my boyfriend commitment ring as it’s currently too big on me, this way I can still wear it :)

  19. I’ve always loved this look, even back in the early seasons of Parenthood when Hattie always wore one. :)

But I wonder do you need an especially nice collarbone for it to work? It seems so chic. Alas, alack, might have to wait till my 6-month-old is out of the grabby stage before I can wear one! ;)

  20. Laura C says...

Wonderful. I usually wear a little silver cross. The first one is gorgeous!, but I am so pale and my skin does not get along with golden jewelry.

  21. Arlene says...

Yes I have a few from YCL Jewels (Australia) she makes all her Jewelry by hand and uses healing crystals! I love them they are beautiful.

I’m a HUGE fan of delicate gold necklaces! So much so I started making them myself (here is the link if you want to check it out: http://www.yaelsteren.com/shop/personalized-necklaces/). I also love layering it with this gold necklace: (http://laneandlanae.com/follow-the-leader/neck-chain). Not only is the necklace beautiful but I love that the company was started by two sisters who are pursuing their passion. If you want to see what the two look like layered together you can check out my most recent blog post, because I am wearing both of them ( http://www.yaelsteren.com/striped-culottes/ )! xx yael

Oh these are all so lovely!

Of course, Rebekah Gough Jewelry is my favorite! So many simple delicate pieces, and just perfect for mama bears : )

I love dainty necklaces! I wear a tiny thin gold bar necklace daily, and in addition to my wedding bands and gold stud earrings, that’s the only jewelry I wear. I have several other delicate necklaces that I switch between, one of which was made by my very talented friend Jessica. She specializes in state and country shaped charms, and her craftsmanship is impeccable. You can also have her add a heart over a city! See her shop here:
    https://www.etsy.com/shop/ShopOhSoAntsy

She also makes this incredible world map necklace; my sister has it and it is just beautiful. It’s actually pretty dainty, even though it is a bit bigger with all the continent charms. Still, I promise you’ve never seen anything as cool as this necklace:

Thanks for the recommendations, both from the post and other commenters!

  25. Chelsea says...

Yes!! I’m obsessed with mine. I love this company called “Dear Mushka,” where every necklace has a story. They make great gifts!! (also very affordable!) http://www.dearmushka.com/

  26. Sarah Beth says...

For the past two years, I’ve worn a little pendant made of crocheted gold wire on a thin gold chain– it’s small and pretty and delicate, and I get so many compliments on it. It’s real gold, so I never have to take it off, even in the shower. But my daughter is 7 months old and so grabby these days, so I’ve temporarily retired it– but I miss it all the time, and people actually have asked me what happened to it!

  27. These are lovely. I bought myself some birthday presents yesterday from Momuse here in Dublin, and will be going back for some of their beautiful pendants – https://www.momuse.ie/

  28. Megan says...

I hardly ever wear jewelry, but I wear the dog-eared “mighty” necklace every day. It was a birthday gift from my best friend who recently passed away. It is my most treasured possession.

    • Claire says...

I’m so sorry for your loss, Megan. What a beautiful keepsake to remember her everyday.

  29. Kate says...

My best friend wears a little gold necklace like this with a natural black pearl on it. You described the way it transforms people perfectly

  30. I do .. my husband was a wonderful gift giver, for any occasion and for no occasion at all.
I most often wear my gold “lima bean” he bought me from Tiffanys about 30 years ago, or the silver one.. in summer .

  31. Courtney says...

I was just getting into the delicate little necklace thing and then I had a baby. No more delicate anything for awhile!

My favorite is just to browse etsy. This is the kind of thing independent makers do really well.

  32. Lesley says...

For years almost everyday I have worn this little jade bear on a gold chain that has been passed down through my family. I don’t even think about it anymore or realize how much it’s a part of me until I see it in every single picture! haha

  33. Annie says...

I live in a city where snatch thieves abound. For eleven years I wore a gold chain with a heart-shaped pendant called a thali(a symbol of a South Indian bride) which was given to me by my husband on our wedding day. On September 11 th last year just days after we moved to KL it was snatched off my neck by a thief when I was crossing the road outside our hotel. I was devastated, shocked and terrified and also fearful that it was a bad omen. My Mr whom I called in tears after the theft was just relieved, I wasn’t hurt and urged me to run back to the hotel. He soon replaced my chain and thali and we, in fact, got married again at the local Sri Lankan temple. However my chain and thali now reside in our safe, and I wear a delicate silver chain with an opal or an elephant pendant both of which were bought for me by my husband when we were on holiday in Bali last year. I miss wearing gold, but I rather not attract any more snatch thieves.

    • Claire says...

How terrible! Your husband sounds like a sweet soul.

  34. Ash says...

I love this look! I have a small gold bean from Tiffany’s that I never take off. It was absurdly expensive but the chain never gets tangled in my hair and it looks brand new even after 2 years of wear and tear. Its such a nice feminine touch that always makes me feel more put together.

  35. Laurel says...

I’m pretty sure I would find a way to break these within the first week of wearing ;)

  36. Esther says...

My Mama gave me a small Roberto Coin white gold and diamond tiny cross necklace on my wedding day. It is so special I wear it every day. It is my uniform.

  37. Stephanie says...

I receive compliments on this chevron necklace from Pittsburgh designer Frost Finery all the time. The V shape is unusual and very flattering.

  38. Linda says...

That delicate X necklace is so beautiful!! I’ve never seen anything quite like it. I have a couple favorite designers. On Etsy, esdesigns has some beautiful pieces in gold and silver. Elizabeth designs and casts her pieces by hand. I love this necklace and wear it often: https://www.etsy.com/listing/60826530/14k-gold-necklace-hand-hammered-pool?ref=shop_home_active_19
I also love Lisa Leonard’s designs. She’s known for her personalized jewelry. I have the one below with 2 squares for my boys. I have a long chain, and I love hearing them “clink” together. She has some dainty charms, too.

  39. Gorgeous! I really love dainty necklaces at the moment, and these delicate ones add a really nice touch to the outfit. In fact, I’ve been buying tons of them recently.

  40. E says...

I used to wear a delicate gold necklace all the time! My college roommate even drew it into my “uniform” once when she was sketching me. I moved away from it because I felt it got too trendy, but after reading this post and all the comments I’m going to go put it on!

  41. I have a gold coin monogram I wear every day. Come to think of it, is like my uniform!

  42. Kelsey says...

I’m not a big fan of accessories. I like to keep things simple and wear the same pieces of jewelry every day. My husband gifted me the most perfect necklace for christmas. He gets bonus points for picking it out himself and its from tiffany’s. http://m.tiffany.com/jewelry/necklaces-pendants/elsa-peretti-diamonds-by-the-yard-pendant-GRP02775?fromGrid=1&gridpos=72/4292&fromcid=287465&search_params=s+5-p+1-c+287465-r+-x+-n+36-ri+-ni+1-lr+0-hr+-1-t+-mi+&trackpdp=bg&trackgridpos=50#

  43. Kathleen says...

I wear two necklaces every day, and never take them off, not even in the shower or when I’m asleep! One is a tiny silver heart pendant from Tiffany that a childhood friend gave to me (I’ve worn this one for probably 5 or 6 years now!). The other is a gold necklace with a gold outlined oval purpley/blue stone in the middle that I got from a relative for my graduation. I’ve grown to love the mixed metals look, and I love the easy reminder to remember important people in my life!

  44. Jessica says...

I agree, dainty gold necklaces are beautiful and go with everything! I got my first one after our daughter was born with a disk for her initial and then my husband added a disk with our son’s initial after he was born. I wear the two tiny charms on a 20 inch gold chain – so longer than my collarbone – but they lay against my heart which I love! They are from Helen Ficalora and still look super shiny even though I never take them off.

  45. Ari Serrano-Embree says...

I wear a delicate gold necklace with a single initial. I love how it makes me feel put together when I’m just in jeans and a tee, and it makes me feel good!

  46. Cynthia says...

Need Supply Company is in Carytown, Richmond, Va. not far from the suburbs where I live! Carytown is a unique shopping district full of one-of-a kind shops. I have a variety of delicate necklaces I wear, but I always take them off at night. A very good jeweler told me it is not a good idea to wear necklaces 24/7. I have a gold beaded one similar to the one you’re showing, which belonged to my aunt. It works with everything.

    • Thank you Shannon for the shout out! xox Tamar (Nest Pretty Things)

  47. Tara says...

I have a maya Brenner initial necklace that I love. It’s got my kids’ initials and is so delicate.

  48. Mallory says...

My husband gave me a rose gold pendant with an arrow on it from Tiffany for Christmas a couple years back. I almost never take it off!

  49. I have a few dainty necklaces that I wear constantly (one is a moon for my daughter Luna, and the other is two small interlocking hearts).

After your hoop earrings post, I was inspired and went bought a few pairs, but I just cant do it! haha! I am back to my studs, dainty necklaces and daily ballerina bun.

  50. Theresa says...

I wear a delicate multi-tone necklace every day with my daughter’s first and middle name initial. I love it! It’s an etsy shop find.

  51. Years ago you wrote about an Etsy shop called Petitor and I bought a few pieces immediately after reading your post. I STILL wear one of them every single day – it’s a delicate gold chain with a curved gold tube (bar?) on it. I absolutely love it!!

  52. Yes! I love a simple, dainty gold necklace. It’s such a nice “barely there” accessory. I’ve been wearing this one from my shop a lot recently: natalieborton.com/products/addison-necklace

    • Deb says...

…I actually have the brass necklace…

    • Alice Quin says...

      Wow love that!

  53. R says...

I’ve always loved the look of a delicate gold necklace but never wear one because my hair constantly gets caught up in it. The only time I wear one is if I tie my hair in a bun.

  54. Emily S. says...

I love this style! It makes me feel more put together every day, regardless of if I spent 5 or 50 minutes getting ready. For the past year or so I’ve been wearing a gold circle/karma necklace that I bought on etsy from this seller (https://www.etsy.com/shop/SeaAndCake). I’ve also recently been crushing on the necklaces made by Catbird, a jewelry store based in Brooklyn, and may take the plunge soon!

  55. A gold necklace has been part of my uniform, along with simple gold earrings for practically my entire life. My ears were pierced at four months with little gold studs and I was gifted a monogrammed gold heart necklace on my Quinceanera, 15th birthday, by an aunt. Gold jewelry in general is becoming so en vogue lately. That I am finding a lot more options out there. I recently bought myself the star and moon Gjenmi asymmetrical necklace and I absolutely LOVE it. It is so subtle and delicate made of 14k gold so it doesn’t require any real care. I highly recommend checking out Gjenmi if you are in the market for a quality gold necklace.

  56. Caro says...

I am a silver person. Gold does not suit me…

    • Traci Barr Segal says...

Same here. Even my wedding rings are in white gold.

  57. This reminded me that i have yet to touch mine for a while! I’m reluctant to wear it everyday because I fear that it might snap!

  58. for a while, i really wanted to make this my thing. and sadly, every one i bought i broke! ahhhhh!

  59. A stuffed bunny was the first thing I bought after finding out we were expecting my son last year. He passed away a few hours after birth in March so for an early mother’s day gift I bought the beautiful, dainty bunny necklace from Ariel Gordon. It’s absolutely stunning and it hangs in such a way that it’s easy to wear alone or layered with other jewelry. Definitely, it’s become a uniform of sorts. I treasure it. https://www.arielgordonjewelry.com/collections/necklaces

I’m so sorry for your loss…losing a child is so terribly heartbreaking. I lost my son late in my pregnancy as well – he was my first. I bought myself an initial necklace from Maya Brenner with his initial on it (it is also the same initial as my rainbow babies ) and i wear it all of the time….it some how makes me feel more connected to him and keeps him present in my life. thinking of you and sending love…xoxo

    • Oh Jennifer, I am sorry for the loss of your sweet son. Your story here is incredibly touching and brought tears to my eyes. What a beautiful way to honor his memory.

    • Nancy says...

Jennifer, I’m so sorry for your loss. That necklace is a really lovely way to carry your son with you.

Jennifer – I am touched to hear about the loss of your son. What a beautiful tribute to him. Thank you for sharing.

  60. Yes I wear a gold plated monogrammed necklace! I have gotten SO MANY compliments and literally have given the name of the Etsy seller to at least 20 people…at the dentist, the frame expert at Blick, a client, friends…

Even though this is only plated, it’s held up through makeup/lotion, ocean, pool, sleep, etc. Here’s the link: https://www.etsy.com/listing/154331164/monogram-necklace-125-monogram-necklace?ref=shop_home_active_7

    Simply beautiful!!

    • Thank you, Dina! I’m so glad you love it!

  62. Laura says...

I have the charms of Saints for each of my children’s names on a necklace. I love the idea of a necklace uniform, but I rarely wear mine because I don’t think I look good in it. Maybe I need a more feminine dainty chain like this one. Thanks for the idea!

  63. Anne-Marie says...

I wear a gold heart necklace everyday that my mom made for me for my wedding day. I gifted it to my bridesmaids as well. It is so delicate and looks great with everything! I love that it reminds me of my mom too. She worked in the US government for 20 years (including at the White House) and now is pursuing a passion in jewelry making. Janeswensenjewelry.com

  64. Rachel says...

I would love to find one with a heart. Anyone know a nice one?

  65. I love the taco one! LOL…that’s so me.

I do wear a gold necklace almost every day. It was a gift from my aunt who passed away when I was young. It’s really lovely and it makes me think of her every day :) She was a wonderful woman.

  66. My godfather is a jewelry maker.
And one of my most previous pieces is a thin gold necklace he made me when I was born, a Carrie Bradshaw-style one with name name calligraphed.
I had to repair the chain a couple times because it’s so delicate, it makes it even more precious!

I wore the sweet gold dot necklace from dogeared for a long time (I think it’s called the circle necklace) but my boyfriend accidentally broke it when we were fooling around one time early on in our relationship, haha. I was so sad about it! But for our anniversary he got me a beautiful small square emerald (my favorite color) pendant on a delicate gold chain, which I now never take off – except for when we go to bed ;)

  68. This is so typically French. So many women I know have a very delicate gold chain, sometimes several, that they wear all the time, usually with a tiny, tiny pendant. Even if they have other jewelry. Kind of like a wedding ring–you don’t take it off because you decide to wear a big fun ring.

  69. Tori says...

Yes! Since I was little I wore a gold locket from my aunt 100% of the time, but I recently switched to the Paloma Picasso Olive Leaf vine from Tiffany in gold. I haven’t gone a day since middle school without a gold necklace! They match everything and are eternally classy, and they don’t get tarnished if you never take them off. Great post :)

I wear Maya Brenner’s letter initial necklace too with my daughter’s first initial. I never take it off and love it!

  71. Mary Cate says...

Where is that necklace from in the photo? It’s perfect! xx

    • Joanna Goddard says...

it’s in the credit at the bottom — and i agree, it’s so beautiful!

Oh my gosh, I feel so stupid! I skimmed way too fast. Thanks for taking time to reply! xx

  72. Eliot says...

I love having an understated but pretty necklace as part of my daily uniform. Mine is a simple tree charm that belonged to my grandmother hanging on a delicate chain. It’s unique, makes me feel slightly more put together than I really am, and I think she would be happy that I wear it everyday. Also, you don’t have to think about jewelry anymore when you’re trying to run out the door in the early morning and that’s a huge plus.

  73. Carly says...

I’ve been wearing the same gold hamsa necklace for, believe it or not, 6 years! It’s definitely a staple.

  74. jill c. says...

i have two small, thin, gold necklaces that i always wear – one is from Maya Brenner with the letter L (for my children’s initial) and then a one from scocha -(caravan necklace) which i never take off….i love that i can wear them all of the time regardless of what i’m doing.

  75. Lauren Lyons says...

I am in love w/ this look as well– I wear Maya Brenner’s initial necklace. I have my first + last name initials on mine. It’s so subtle + so pretty. Cute post idea.

  76. Kelsey says...

I have been wanting one of these and I was thinking I had seen you post something along these lines before but was hoping for a round-up. Thanks!

    • Kelsey says...

And I have the beaded one pinned already! :D

  77. Amy says...

I love delicate gold jewelry and often wear one necklace for a few months before switching. I think it was you who first pointed me to edor (an Etsy shop) and I have a few of their necklaces and earrings now. I currently have a 9 month old who would love to rip off my jewelry and inhale it, so I have one Mama Gems necklace (geometric silicone beads) and it’ll have to do the job for a while now :)
