My mom would say (because her mother would say, and her mother’s mother would say, etc.) “Every mama crow thinks here baby is the blackest.” Meaning – every mom thinks her child is the brightest, cutest, sweetest baby that every was. Thank goodness for mothers that give our self-esteem a head start.
We use this proverb in my culture as well, but we say every monkey is a gazelle in the eyes of its mother ;)

Cute… and so true!
Joanna,
I have to tell you – I’m currently listening to your sister’s interview on Q in Canada (which is very exciting). She is so well spoken and doing such an excellent job!
Ha! We have (almost) the same proverb in Italian:
“Ogni scarrafone è bello a mamma sua” (this is actually a southern dialect) and it means:
every beetle is beautiful to his mom
It is supposed to mean that mothers are not objective when it comes to their children, but also, very literally, that even if a child is not quite exactly good looking he/she will nevertheless look beautiful to his/her mother.
Infact “scarrafone” is a deprecative for the actual italian word “scarafaggio” (beetle) and it means figuratively “someone ugly”.
Thank you for making me think about it!
Even the ones covered in poo ;-)
Yes! My Palestinian mother in law says this all the time. the monkey is a gazelle in the eyes of his mother :-)!!
Love this! And very true I’m sure (we’re waiting for our little beetle!)
True!
This is so precious! Thanks for sharing.

PS I know this is obsessively-detail-oriented, but if you make the background color of the quote #FBF9F4 (not #FAF9F4), it will match the background of the site and won't cause that clash-flash when you scroll. :)
haha I love you for this
Aww what a great proverb!
Seems sadly anti-beetle, haha. I keep picturing a mom beetle forcing her child to wear antlers. How about, every beetle is a great beetle in the eyes of its mother.
So true! I always joke around that I could get braces, have curlers in my hair and look like a disaster but my mom would see me as beautiful! (And truly mean it). Happy birthday! Xx Yael
♥️♥️♥️
My beetle is a beetle and not only that, but a little scarab poo pusher and I love him as he is.
This is a total joy.
Love this!
woa
Interesting.
Yes, but my daughter is actually a gazelle ;)
