Not sure why NYMag didn’t interview me for living above my own pizzeria. The smell is mostly delicious, but not when I was home with a stomach bug this week. Sometimes I feel like I’m in a 50’s sitcom, but we DO bring the monitor downstairs when Sam is sleeping, and have people over all the time.
Those lunches are crazy! That would not go down around here.
One of the presidents looks exactly like Will Ferrell. HAHAHAHA
the lady who lives above a restaurant shes never been able to get a reservation at?? really come on restaurant people that just plain un-neighborly behavior, shame on you!

That Spanish tortilla is more high needs than my four year old. Ha! I wouldn’t be doing this recipe from Bon Appetite, but would rather par cook sliced potatoes in the microwave first. Well that’s a chef for you!

The comments in the article about the school lunches are NUTS!? Someone wrote that only posh kids will eat that because “normal kids like peanut butter, chips and sweets”. WHAT. I mean ok, some kids are more picky than others, but if you don’t stuff them with peanut butter, chips and sugar then they WILL eat other stuff. Kids seem to love eggs, humous, pitta bread, and all kinds of random stuff – I used to nanny 2 kids age 5 and 7, and they both loved oatmeal, sushi, salmon, green smoothies, olives.. Btw, why are not more people packing a green smoothie in the lunchbox? I started making one at home and the kids thought it was fun to help, and when they tasted it they LOVED IT, and since then we prepare the mixed in the evening, chuck it in the fridge, give it a quick mix in the morning and pour it into a thermos to keep cool. Along with a bean salad (edamame beans!) a sandwich and some corn chips.. They love it, and they have so far never brought it back home uneaten.
Another suggestion is – make salmon for dinner one night and use some leftover salmon in the sandwich the day after. Whatever bread you like, shredded salmon and cream cheese.. Even kids will love it. It is called a “mommy sandwich” in this house as the mother in the house LOVES it and used to make one for herself – cue curious kids that also want one.. :)
Some of our presidents did not age well, as they looked better in their younger years!

I live above a bakery and the worst part about it is that smell at 3am. Ooooh the freshly baked bread… And they leave the kitchen door open so you can see the endless trays of bread cooling as you walk by. It takes a lot of effort not to pop in and steal one.
I live above a burger place and i know what you mean. Most of the time you can’t smell burgers (we mostly keep the windows closed because of noise) but every now and again in the summer it makes me so hungry.

The “Hottest Heads of State” is the best thing I have seen in ages!!! Oh my goodness, it’s amazing that so many of those fuddy-duddy looking guys were actually REALLLLLY hot in their younger years! Who would have guessed!
(also, I think I’m the only person that still uses the phrase ‘fuddy-duddy’ )

Oh god, those chef’s kids lunches are amazing! You know what my kids get in their lunch box? Yoghurt, cheese and crackers, two pieces of fruit, popcorn and a Vegemite sandwich. At the most I cut the crusts off lol! Sorry, kids.

Love the NYMag article. We actually live above a funeral home in Carroll Gardens because it was a 2bed/2bath in a good school district :) I recommend it – very quiet and they accept our packages!
I love above an orthodontist office. When we chose the apartment we thought that would be a nice quiet downstairs neighbor…until we discovered that dentistry tools all work with an air compressor-that they turn on at 6:30 and and which is located under our bed. Now we know!
Oh my gosh, Chester’s A. Arthur’s hair was amazing. Love it and the comment with it. Also, prez #19 = hottie! Who knew?! I would have been so patriotic back then.

I am dying over the hottest heads of state website. Literally the best thing I’ve seen on the internet in such a long time. They write satirical fan fiction about political leaders. So. Good. I wish I had thought of it first.

Please tell me I am not the only one laughing at the chef lunchboxes. This morning I packed: some sliced turkey, applesauce, cheese, and some crackers. Ken Oringer of Coppa packed: Chinese pork dumplings with cilantro and ginger or egg sandwiches on brioche with arugula.
A hard-boiled egg is a good idea though! That may be the one practical take away from that article.
I actually sent a chicken and arugula sandwich for my oldest’s lunch today. I’m not sure if the arugula doesn’t end up in the garbage, though. Dehydrated apple is always a win, too.
Year’s of watching Fraiser and I’ve always wondered what that apartment looked like laid out. It seemed like such a labyrinth of rooms. I feel relieved to finally know.
My worst apartment was upstairs from a clothing store that played “oon-tss, oon-tss, oon-tss” music from 10 til 8 every day.
Oh my gosh, try living in South America. The Latin beat reverberates into every room, no matter where you are. People play their music so loud from their cars. And the honking of horns, intercoms…
i used to live in the building beside a bagel shop. said bagel shop has (to this day) the BEST BAGELS I’VE EVER HAD. said bagel shop opened/opens at 6am. said bagel shop started baking around 3am-4am. I left for work at 5:15am. it… was… TORTURE!!! the smell, that delicious smell, it filled my crappy Hoboken apartment every night I left the windows open…

I used to live above the Capitol Theatre in Arlington, MA. We never got the popcorn smell but we could lean out the window and see what the ticket line was like. What wafted up the stairs was the smell of CROISSANTS from Quebrada Bakery. OH MAH LAWD. Heaven.
