New York City hammock

Alex and I were riding bikes around town, when we passed this guy Philippe relaxing in a hammock. Intrigued, we pedaled over and asked him where he found it. “Eastern Mountain Sports for $20,” he said and explained that he simply ties it to two trees anywhere around the city. “I’ve been called a lazy bum, but I love it.” What a genius idea!

(Excuse the crappy photos; they’re from Alex’s phone)

  1. I saw a guy awhile back with a hammock like this strung up on the beach. I love the idea! It would make reading outdoors so comfortable!

  2. What an adorable young man. I could just squeeze his precious cheeks! Suzy Q, you must be VERY proud of your son. God bless.

  3. My cool son will never stop to amaze me! I guess he wanted to extend his vacation by turning NYC into his own little back yard.
Way to go Philippe, carpe diem!
Merci Joanna for the nice pictures and I hope it inspires people to do the same thing!
    Suzy Q.

when we landscaped out back yard – no good, older trees like the last one – i had a structure built for a hammock. people stop by to see and comment on it. it screams summer is here!

Great idea, the hammock, but uhm, Philippe, what a hottie :)!!! Love your blog, Rita (from Germany)

  8. sara, he said they do ask you to take them down in central park, but i think the hudson river is ok! xo

  9. I hate to be the burster of bubbles, but if someone from the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation had seen him, I’m pretty sure they’d make him take it down. I’ve seen them do it before and I actually think it’s against their rules. Bummer, I know.

  10. Love this…off to find one…

  11. ahhhh OH MY! i was just telling justin that we need to carry around hammocks everywhere we go…and here you have it!

  12. What a great idea! love it!

  13. that’s seriously genius!

  14. This guy is my new hero. I have been craving some QHT (quality hammock time).

  15. That’s pretty fantastic! We have a hammock in our backyard and I it — I can just imagine how wonderful it would be to lie about in Central Park, or next to the river like that.

  16. We use these same hammocks when we go camping! Sleeping in the woods by the campfire in one is fabulous!

  17. I think your pictures did a MUCH better picture of selling the product and relaxation than what EMS had on their website….which was super cheesy. So I went and bought one. Thank you for the morning inspiration and impulse buy.

  18. how awesome! i absolutely love lounging around in a hammock!

  19. that rocks beyond all belief! i love it.

  20. Where is this. I live next door to Astoria Park and we do this! Love it! Cannot believe they do that in Manhattan too=)
Come visit Astoria on your bike, its pretty!

  21. I love it!

  22. It is quite an unusual way to spend summer free time

  23. yes, this was along the hudson river, along the west side highway xo

  24. Great idea! I have to agree those photos aren’t too shabby. Isn’t it crazy how nice the cameras on phones are these days?

  25. my boyfriend has the same thing! he’ll go for runs through the woods… get tired… post up the hammock… and nap.

i cannot imagine seeing on in new york though. blows my mind.

  26. I like Alex’s pictures.

    Awesome idea.

  27. aw wow this looks so relaxing and lovely!

  28. Only East Coasters would call someone a lazy bum for relaxing. Gotta love us.

  29. theres a lake behind my department at my university, people always tie a hammock there between classes, I love it! but what do you expect from art students, were the laziest of the lazy!

  30. I’d gladly be a lazy bum alongside him! It’s pure heaven, with some food and drinks perhaps hahaha. I’m asking for too much now. Is this the Hudson River?

  31. such a cool idea! i doubt i’d have the guts to do it in the city though haha

  32. What a cutie pie. What was he reading?

  33. I’ll be the first to say it: he’s hot :)

  34. nice! people rock these in portland all the time. trees are probably a bit more commonplace in oregon than in nyc! love it, phillippe.

  35. this is awesome. i have always wanted a hammock…i think i’m going to head over to EMS right now, well…maybe tomorrow;)

  36. That’s awesome! I’m known for my stupid fears, and I fear hammocks because I believe I’m going to fall out of them and smash my face in. I’d love to relax in one… some day haha!

  37. This is FANTASTIC!!

  38. Haha, does this guy know he’s now internet famous?

  45. i hope this isn’t too obscene, but this guy’s got balls. seriously! ed has, like, a million girlfriends back home. reid, please come back!

  46. That is hilarious and great all at the same time. I have to give kudos to people who just don’t give a crap about what other people think (well, within reason). The guy looks totally comfortable and what a great view! BTW… I hope Jillian chooses Ed! How about you?

  47. That’s brilliant. Where do you go bike riding here in the city? Were these taken somewhere near the park?

    Suggestions welcome!
