Hilarious Podcast

The other night, I needed a break from these little stinks, adorable as they are, so Alex put them to bed while I embarked on a long walk around the neighborhood. Earlier that day I had heard about a podcast called Mortified, which features people reading embarrassing things they had written as kids — diaries, poems, fan letters, you name it. It sounds random, but as soon as I started listening I was hooked.

While wandering down the street, past people walking dogs and couples sharing ice creams, I started laughing uncontrollably at a story of a teenager writing to Katharine Hepburn. I’m sure I looked like a total crazy person but it could not be helped.

Have you listened to Mortified? If you’re planning any long walks this weekend, and don’t mind looking insane, I’d highly recommend it. Find all the episodes here.

P.S. Seven best podcasts, and crying in public.

(Thanks, Erica)

Try “Crime Writers On……” podcast. Awesome and super funny.

  2. Ah I love Mortified but had no idea they were on SoundCloud – thanks for sharing! I was actually at the recording for this one but just had to listen to it again – laughing so hard my cheeks hurt! :D

  3. Vickk says...

Come see a live show in San Francisco! They are so much fun.

  4. Patty says...

I love Mortified! I’ve been listening for a couple months now. I used to listen to Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me on long runs in the park and laughing while running looks even more insane! But at least you live in NYC where walking down the street laughing is one of the least crazy things people do. Cheers!

  5. Dale says...

In the UK the BBC, Radio 4, do a programme called ‘My teenage diary’ which is celebs reading bits of their childhood diaries and is also hilarious, if you can get hold of that in the States, highly recommended.

  6. Thank you for sharing! I’ve been listening today and laughing so hard I even woke my baby up :)

  7. I love Mortified! I was lucky enough to be in a live stage show years ago reading about summer camp.

  8. Lily W. says...

Woah, I just started to listen to it today and then I came across this post! I love coincidences!!!

  9. Maria says...

thank you…this is such a funny podcast. love your blog.

  10. Suzannah Batty says...

    I. Love. Mortified! I usually listen to it on public transport. Lucky I don’t mind looking crazy (embrace the crazy!) :) Podcasts are the best. I rave about them to everyone. Serial is my fave (and of course Undisclosed/anything Serial-related), and also Strangers and Mortified. A new favourite on the scene is The Mystery Show – worth checking out! Love reading your recommendations Joanna, thank you :) have a wonderful weekend, from Suzannah Batty (suits my crazy) in Oz xx

  11. Liz says...

They do live shows of Mortified once a month in Brooklyn at Littlefield, and I’ve never laughed so hard in my life. Would be a great date night – it’s right near Dinosaur BBQ so my girlfriends and I went there after :)

  12. Gwen Dephanie says...

This is so bizarre – I usually find most allegedly-funny things to be funny, but I do NOT get the Mortified thing. It doesn’t even make me smile. Am I the only person that just doesn’t find it funny?

  13. I’m going to listen to it…
Need a dose of laughter now!

  14. I loved the first one and now I’m scheduling out the remaining podcasts so I don’t go through them too fast!

  15. Oh my god, this sounds amazing. I’m just picturing you walking and laughing down the street and it’s something I’d totally do. Laughing is so therapeutic, I cannot wait to have a listen! :)

  16. Hi Joanna, on behalf of everyone at Mortified, we’re beyond flattered to hear our podcast stuck a chord with you and your readers. Many of our friends are obsessed with your site so this was so fun to discover. Mortified has been happening for over 13 years in cities worldwide (which is partially captured in our film, Mortified Nation) and it’s always great to attract new converts. If you’d ever like to attend a live event, drop us a line– we’d be thrilled to treat you and some friends. As for the commenter above who raved about Call Your Girlfriend, funny enough 1 of the producers of that series works on our podcast, too. We have some great episodes planned for upcoming weeks/months. So excited for people to be able to hear those soon.

I love the podcast suggestions here. I wish there was a poll in comments so I could see the most popular suggestions from readers. Thanks again.

  18. I also listen to Mortified on walks but sometimes feel uncomfortable with the language because I’m usually pushing my two-year-old son, who repeats everything. My new favorite podcast is Mystery Show with Starlee Kine. It also reminds me of Seinfeld and seems to be mostly kid appropriate. You MUST check it out!

  19. Elea says...

I love listening to podcasts while walking to work, can’t wait to listen to Mortified! Another funny one is The Talk of Shame, a comedian gets his friends to tell their most embarrassing stories. There haven’t been any new eps in a long time but some of the early ones are so funny!

  20. Michelle says...

There’s a great live show in Canada called ‘Grown Ups Read Things They Wrote as Kids’ (they also record them as a podcast.) Very fun to see the adults read live!

    • So glad you like Grownups Read Things They Wrote as Kids, Michelle. We sure like making it. We’re fans of the new Mortified podcast as well.

  21. Kate Houk says...

There is also “Grown Ups Read Things They Wrote As Kids”. I’ve almost fallen off a treadmill many times laughing while listening to that podcast. Thanks for the recommendation!

  22. Sara says...

    oh thank you!!

  23. Omg that makes me want to dig out my childhood diary. So many silly thoughts, penned before I could actually spell. Hilarity.

  24. Oh my goodness, yes!!! Have you seen the documentary (Mortified Nation)? It’s also hilarious. I believe it’s still on Netflix. I was so excited when I heard they came out with a podcast! The Katherine Hepburn one is probably my favorite so far.

  25. i like the image of one of your readers spotting you by yourself laughing and being like “….could that be…is that…umm, joanna?” haha :)

  26. Have you listened to Call Your Girlfriend? Funny, smart podcast from two long distance best friends.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      sounds so good, thank you!!

  27. I haven’t heard of that one, but it sounds amazing! I’ll definitely be checking that out.

If you’re into Bravo shows, a great podcast is “Watch What Crappens”. Two guys go recap the shows twice a week. Very funny.

  29. Chio says...

I am obsessed with podcasts! I give them the complete credit for really getting me into running because I get excited every morning for listening my favorite ones as I go for a run. I started with Serial (obviously) and now I have a whole bunch I listen to… This one sounds hilarious… I will definitely add it to my list! I am used to people watching me laugh like crazy already!

  30. Mollie says...

I ride the bus everyday to work and one of my favorite people watching moments is when someone is reading or listening to something and they burst out laughing in the quiet bus. Makes me smile every time.

  31. yael steren says...

Thanks for sharing! I was into the Serial podcast, though I didn’t really love it at the end, and I’m excited to try out a new podcast now! xoxo yael

Thanks for the recommendation. I know what I’m doing after work as soon as I get in my car!

I like picturing you laughing uncontrollably in public. I’ve been a witness to this type of behavior, and rather than give a strange look when someone laughs to herself for a reason that isn’t apparent, I can’t help but laugh right along with.

  33. Julianne says...

I’ve watched the Netflix documentary and it was amazing! I recommend it :)

    • Alexandra Winfield-Perez says...

I watched this too! Brave, brave, souls!

    • I love the documentary and the TV show on Netflix! So excited about the podcast!

  34. Stacie Albrecht says...

there is a documentary on Netflix called Mortified Nation. Hilarious.

  35. Van says...

I love this podcast! I was on a train in Japan (and it is dead silent), and I was listening to mortified and started hysterically laughing, to the point of tears, and needless to say, I got a lot of strange looks. Def recommend!

  36. I started listening to podcasts a few months ago when I started taking a lot of road trips for work. Now I listen whenever I get the chance. This one sounds perfect for my commute home!
