Three Spring Outfits

denim-overalls

Fashion trends are fun, but can sometimes feel intimidating. (One example: the ubiquitous “Naked Dress.”) So we chose three of our favorite spring trends and figured out ways to incorporate them into an everyday wardrobe. Our lovely friend Gaby agreed to model…

LOOK #1:

Jumpsuits are hugely popular this year, and for good reason. They’re quick to throw on (just one piece!) and incredibly comfortable. The genius of a jumpsuit is that it looks as stylish as a dress, but is way more versatile — it can take you everywhere from work to dog walking to picnics in the park.

Jumpsuit: Hinge; Vintage clogs: similar here.

LOOK #2:

Overalls are back — we’ve spotted them on women everywhere, looking effortlessly chic. The styling trick? Buckle just one strap and roll the cuffs to prevent looking like a toddler. We especially love them layered with stripes, or paired with a tank top on warmer days.

Overalls: Madewell; Striped sweater: Treasure & Bond; Tote: similar here; Sneakers: Vans

LOOK #3:
lace-top

A lacy top is a warm weather staple, for hanging out with friends and dinners in gardens. To channel Jane Birkin in the 70s, we love pairing this crochet piece with flared jeans (another big trend) and chunky clogs.

Lace top: Hinge; Vintage jeans: similar here; Vintage clogs: similar here.

What do you think? Which outfit is your favorite? Are you wearing any of these trends this season?

P.S. 9 big trends this spring.

  1. Love all these looks WAY too much! She is beautiful, by the way!

    Ripped Jeans

  2. Karinny says...

OMG we are back to the 90’s :o

  3. Mimi says...

Oh no, 80’s rompers and baggy (sloppy?) clothes are back! Not my favorite trend. I remember dressing like this when I was a kid. I cringe looking back at photos – not in a hurry to look that way again!!

  4. Your friend is gorgeous! She also reminds me of Anne Hathaway. Very cute and nicely done!

  5. i like the second outfit a lot! I loooooove overalls!

  6. Prudence Yeo says...

I have always love lace so have been wearing a lot of this trend! Definitely interested to explore into the overalls style too!

  7. I love these looks!!!!Especially the first and last!!

  8. Haley says...

Wow- I just turned 36 and have started feeling 40 looming. My jaw dropped reaction to these ‘stylish’ looks confirms this.. I rocked those overalls in 1995!

  9. I love that overalls are back!

  10. Laura says...

This totally supports my theory that fashion just recycles itself every 20 years. When I was a kid in the 90’s, bellbottoms and funky polyester shirts were the rage. In the early 00’s, neon colors and off the shoulder tops made a comeback. Now, 90’s (with some hints of 70’s) fashion has re-reared its ugly head. I think your model is literally the only woman on earth who can pull off those overalls. I would definitely look like a crazy art teacher… And the pockets on those high-waisted jeans! Please, direct your eyes toward the worst part of my body.

    • Vashnie says...

Laura, I could not have said it any better :)

  11. Leah says...

I think I’m alone in the belief that the benefits of rompers and jumpsuits outweigh the pain of undoing them when going to the bathroom. I’m pro-overalls too!

  12. Kelly Hawkins Smith says...

About those overalls – I owned that EXACT outfit when I was 12 (just swap the Vans for some K-Swiss). I cannot dress like a 12-year-old me!

  13. Jill says...

I get that trends come back, and I think it’s adorable to see my students wearing neon clothing and mesh gloves on one hand. However, we may have gone too far with ladies wearing one-shoulder overalls, no? Maybe if you are the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, but the rest of us? Not so much.

  14. Stripes! Sailor stripes and jeans 4evah, ha. And I am just so, so glad flared jeans are back, if only to see store racks stocked with more pairs again (skinny jeans do me no favors). Lacy tops sound like a good idea for summery get-togethers and travel too. :)

  15. Call me crazy but I am literally LOL’ing at these women who think it is blasphemous to have to pull a romper down to pee. And I have never believed that a style of clothing has to be buried w/ the other trends that were alive when they were popular. Didn’t know being comfortable was so shameful! #overallsforlife

  16. I see myself wearing number 1 and 3. The overall? Although it looks cute on her, I don’t really think I’m cool enough to wear it, maybe for the younger crowd :) Jumpsuits are my favorite. You can dress them up or down and are so comfy! Beautiful pictures!!!

  17. Tristen says...

I am usually about 5 years behind trends, so maybe the overalls will grow on me… in the meantime, my mom is PSYCHED that they are “back.” She never stopped wearing hers : )

  18. Diane says...

Oh… jumpsuits are very cute, but when ya gotta go….. ya gotta go…. for that reason only, I won’t be wearing one anytime soon.

  19. Jumpsuits are huge in Spain and I’m not sure why! They strike me as baby clothes which is fitting because you’d need someone to help you take it off when you have a nature call. :/

  20. I don’t know if I’m brave enough but I admire all of these trends and Gaby is always so lovely. What I do like about overalls is that they seem really nursing-friendly!! LOVE the red and white striped sweater and how she’s rolled the sleeves.

  21. colleen says...

Did the overalls, wide leg pants and clogs in the 90s, how can you pee in a jumpsuit? I’m happy with the clothes I’ve got, now that I know what works for me!

  22. Laura says...

Once I hit a certain age, probably my early 30s I adopted the mantra “always dress with dignity”. This mantra has served me well. While I wouldn’t necessarily consider these outfits to fit within my mantra, they are fun to see and the model is lovely. Sometimes I think our youth culture prevents us from fully embracing being adult women.

  23. Lauren E. says...

I tend to agree with most commenters. So many girls look adorable in overalls but I just feel like a frumpy little kid. I think you have to already have a fashion-y vibe about you to pull them off. The flares, though? All about them. I came home in a pair the other day, and my BF said, “You look tall!”

  24. tomatolove says...

I’m sorry, but the overall made me think: overgrown child. I like #2 and #3, though!

  25. Awads says...

Really? Again with the overalls? I last bought a pair in 1997. I think I may still have them in the back of a drawer. Eek!

  26. lynn says...

Errrr. Ummm. Nope. No. Uh-uh. Sorry. Overalls? Jumpsuits? And chunky sandals too? (shakes head and waits for the ’80s to pass)

    • Lindsay says...

Thank you, Lynn! I had the same reaction. Would not wear any of it.

  27. I love jumpsuits and overalls right now! I can’t bring myself to leave one overall strap unbuckled though. It would feel too contrived to me and I struggle with that even though I think they look super cute on the model here. I promise I wear them in a way that doesn’t look toddlerish though!

  28. These photos are so perfect!

  29. Laura C says...

Gaby looks so nice in all of them! I go for the jumpsuit. I find it very nice and comfortable – despite the bathroom issue.
Overalls did their work for me in 1991. I gladly pass it to younger ladies like Gaby.
    xxx

  30. Katie says...

I am tooooo loooooooooooooooooooong/tall for overalls and jumpsuits. :( I have tried to find something but so far everything has given me camel toe which is an unfortunate look.

  31. Carmen B says...

#3 is gorgeous and seems more put together. I’m loving that white top.

  32. sharon says...

these looks are gorgeous. also, joanna, could you please ID the bags she’s wearing? they are as cool as her outfits..

i would love for you to do a round up of some great leather bags. everything i see is either super cheap or ridiculously expensive and full of weird bells and whistles. i just want a cute leather bag i can wear everywhere that fits all my stuff and doesn’t cost $1,000.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

they’re actually vintage bags, but we put links in the post to similar bags, if that’s helpful. great idea for a post on leather bags on a budget. are you thinking leather totes or leather handbags?

    • Taylor says...

I’d check Cuyana. I have one of Tall Tote and am obsessed. Beautiful leather, great quality and reasonably priced. They just came out with a tote that has a longer crossbody strap which zips closed.

    • sharon says...

Totes! :) I will check out Cuyana, thank you!

    • Kim says...

I just recently found the brand Elk. It’s an Australian company, and I love their leather bags. I got a large gray crossbody and use it everyday now. And I used to switch bags almost daily:)

  33. Ann says...

Gabby is so pretty, but I think overalls half un-done need to stay in 1992. No shade on Salt N’ Peppa, but let’s not bring this back!

  34. The jumpsuit (look #1) is my favorite! I’m not too fond of overalls although I do have a shorter length overall that I wear during the summer – I think it depends on how you style your overalls that makes it appealing to wear. Thanks for the post! :)

  35. I’m not sure that I could pull off any of these! I haven’t worn overalls for over 15 years and I don’t think I could do it again… but then I see these pictures or Alexa Chung and think, maybe I could?
I suppose the crochet would be the more wearable option though, because as cute as jumpsuits are, my short legs and long torso just wouldn’t make it work!

  36. Susan says...

Not for me, except perhaps the last. I’m too advanced in age for the first two & honestly, I didn’t like them as anything but hanging out in my back garden when they were in many years ago.

I’d love to see another post with Courtney of the four fall outfits from last year. I could adapt each of them for my age & really enjoyed not feeling elderly (because I’m not but compared to CoJ readers, um, probably. :)

    • Trish O says...

      Susan,

Right there with you. I think I am too old for half-off overalls. My kids might think I just forgot to finish getting dressed. Really cute on this model, not so much on 40 year old mom. :(

  37. Jill says...

I have to agree with most of the comments – she looks cute but I’d never try the first two of these trends again. I did them both in the early 90’s and regret it. I think the model looks cute because she’s tiny like a pixie and (I’m guessing) young enough not to have made these mistakes the first time round.

  38. Overalls are sooo uncomfortable. I used to wear them when I was in high school (the 90’s!) and I was very happy when I could finally get rid of them.

  39. Benay says...

I don’t understand the overalls look but it’s probably because I wore it in high school and I hated high school — bad vibes.

But I LOVE the jumpsuit/romper look and have been trying to find the best one. I love the lace/crochet shirts, as well, and just bought a gorgeous tank from Banana Republic last week. The pattern is in the straps and in strips down the sides. Perfect for the summer!

  40. Jessica says...

I can’t believe overalls have made a comeback. So funny! I like the idea of a one piece, but maybe only on a beach day as something to wear over the bathing suit.

  41. Bethanne says...

I did the one shoulder (GAP) overall look in elementary school in the early 90s. Not a trend I will repeat! But…she looks great, so good for her!

  42. Becca says...

I cannot believe that overalls with just one strap buckled areare back in fashion. Kris Kross would be so proud!

  43. I’ve been dying to try overalls again. Gotta find a cute, trendy pair! (Love the tips for making you look less toddleresque! Ha!)

  44. Betsy says...

I am 45 and did overalls and jumpsuits in the 90’s – Gaby looks great but I am taking a pass. That red striped sweater is fabulous – too bad I live in Texas and would never wear a summer sweater except in the a/c!

  45. Melanie says...

Outfit 3 is cute, but as a grown woman (in her 30’s) I can’t help but feel like jumpsuits and overalls are a bit infantilizing. Dressing like a toddler? Nah, I’d rather look like a respectable adult :)

  46. Um, hello? When will rompers start having the snaps from baby bodysuits integrated into their crotch design?I can’t stand wearing rompers just because of the bathroom situation.

    • Joanna Goddard says...

      haha so true!

  47. Already jumped on the white Vans trend this season!! Love them! (And they’re encouraging me to get back on my longboard, too!)

  48. anne says...

Does it bother anyone else that you have to get completely naked to pee if you are wearing a jump suit? ha! Ugh, so much work. Maybe I’m all alone in my prudishness. (and laziness).

    • Elizabeth says...

I feel exactly the same way!

    • YES! I was going to say the only downside to a romper/jumpsuit is the fact that I’m sitting in my work bathroom stall completely naked (hello cracks in the doors ;) ). But otherwise I love them so much.

    • Right? Can we get a built in butt flap like in old time pajamas? It’s worse in the winter when you are wearing tights under a romper and then a sweater over your romper and your just like whatever I won’t drink water today…

    • Joanna Goddard says...

these comments are making me laugh out loud. so true.

    • That’s my problem with jumpsuits too. I love the look of them but don’t love having to strip off to use the bathroom! Dresses are definitely more practical in that aspect!

    • Ann says...

Yes! And then you get all paranoid about the top of the romper touching the bathroom floor, argh!!

  49. Absolutley in love with that striped sweater. Even though I am not the biggest lover of overalls I think it really suits you! :)

  50. Kerry says...

I love the idea of jumpsuits but what about going to the bathroom???
